Submit your favorite nature images to their 2008 photography competition—

Cash prizes totaling $18,000 plus camera equipment and other gifts will be awarded to the winners in three separate divisions: professional, amateur and youth.

The grand prize winner will receive $5,000. Plus, a portfolio of award-winning entries will be published in the 2008 December/January issue of the magazine.

In return for your $15 entry fee, you will receive a one-year membership in the National Wildlife Federation, including a subscription to National Wildlife*, and you can submit as many as 20 images in any combination in the stated categories.

Genetic engineering, prolonged existence or cures for the once incurable… What does this mean for humans? Is it about quality or quantity of life? Can our planet sustain the expanding population? What will the outcome eventually create environmentally, socially and existentially?

Are we all connected or is it every man for themselves? What are the societal implications of both?

Is there vulnerability or bravado?

Where lies the beauty and to what standard? Who sets the standard of beauty?

Love, sex and interpersonal relationships, family structure…

Psychosis, pathos and war…

Physical form and function

Evolution or Faith Based Creation Theory

And how does spirituality play into religion?

What do humans value and why?

What is the human condition?

All work will be new work, created specifically for this exhibition, and never shown previously.

1) Artist's Statement of Interest--- A brief statement that outlines the direction the artist proposes for this exhibition.

2) Resume—. A current artist's resume

3) Reference List— Name, address and telephone numbers of three references.

4) An Annotated Visual Image Identification Sheet— A typewritten visual image identification list that includes: title of work, medium, dimensions, date completed, a brief description of the artwork (if necessary).

5) CD images—six to ten digital images. . The files should be named on the disc with name and corresponding number as listed on a separate visual image identification sheet. These images should be indicative of the type of work that would be appropriate for this project.

Momentum: Images of Dance, The Connecticut Valley Regional Ballet Company Inc. and The Ethel Walker School invite all interested photographers to submit entries into an international contest that celebrates the beauty, grace and athleticism of dance.

The movement in all forms of dance imaged in the moment by photography is our goal.

Momentum: Images of Dance captures the energy and drama of both mediums.

The presentation of public art projects and cultural events in the area further enriches the cultural life of downtown, encouraging a vibrant street life and engagement with the urban environment in new and unexpected ways.

General Program Description

Grants for Art in Public Spaces will enable the creation andpresentation of art in the myriad public spaces of Lower Manhattan, including parks, plazas, building lobbies and atria, and construction sites. Grants of up to $20,000 will support artists and arts organizations producing public art projects.
Public art projects should reach beyond the typical arts audience, engage the public in unusual ways, and take place in contexts outside the gallery, performance hall, or theater space.

General Membership Meeting

We announced last month that there will be a general meeting October 10th for all members to attend.

After much discussion we have concluded that the future of Positive Focus rests in the hands of the general membership. We are not a large enough Board to re-establish and run Positive Focus the way it has been run in the past.

We encourage all members to consider their interest in Positive Focus and how much time they feel they can devote to shaping its future. We believe, given all of the positive benefits of working within Positive Focus, that there will be a significant number of members who will want to contribute their time and creative energy to the future of Positive Focus.

When we meet on Wednesday, October 10, we will provide an overview of the past (Lorrie’s vision, past projects, etc.), the present (infrastructure in place to build from), and the immediate challenges to be dealt with over the next few months.

In order to gauge the level of interest in and commitment to the next phase of Positive Focus, we ask that members RSVP to julie@positivefocus.org to let us know if they will be attending the

Celebrating New York's Spiritual Harmonies

This Thursday, September 6th, the "Diversity of Devotion" exhibit will have it's inaugural opening reception at the Safe-T Gallery.

This unique and relevant photography exhibit which I was able to initiate and produce (originally with Positive Focus, Inc.) is the culmination of a photography competition which launched in 2006.

Our five wonderful jurors, choose the top work from hundreds of submitted photos, covering 20 unique religions and spiritual practices, which best exemplify the diversity of faith and practice found in New York City.

We are also pleased to present an amazing slide show by one of our top winners, Stephanie Keith - - who documented over ten private Haitian Voodoo Ceremonies in Brooklyn.
