Whether you listen to their rockin' cover or Julie Andrew's singing it in the movie version, you know the chorus goes something like this:

"When the dog bites,
When the bee stings,
When I'm feeling sad,
I simply remember my favorite things,
And then I don't feel so bad."

I got to thinking about some low points in my life, and I began pondering the question: would merely thinking about my favorite things make me feel better? The answer I came up with was NO. When I asked a couple of folks if thinking of their favorite things when they feel sad makes them feel better, they too said NOPE. So, what made Rodgers & Hammerstein think, "hey, good lyric"?

One of my favorite things is Big E the Wonder Dog. Emmett (aka Big E) is my dog, and I just really dig that little dude. When I am having a bad day at work, I do wish I could just go home and squeeze on him. But, it doesn't make me feel better. It just makes me all the more ready to go home and snuggle up with the dude while we watch Guys and Dolls or Monster Quest. It makes me MORE irritated or sad.

So, maybe Big E is a bad example. He isn't really a thing but a living being that I interact with, so I would naturally not get a total benefit from merely thinking about his sweet, furry face. So, I thought about another situation: stress monkey time at the office. When I am a raging stress monkey, will thinking about a beautiful sunrise or music really make me feel better? No . . . not really. Usually during the most stress-filled office moments, I would much rather be at the beach watching a sunset or even sitting listening to my iPod. Thinking about what I am missing out on makes me even more pissy.

Maybe I just lack Maria's plucky attitude. Maybe I am a "glass half empty" kind of gal. Maybe I just needed something to write a post about.

my del.icio.us

<!--

I just wanted to wish you a Happy Earth Day. You don't have to be a tree hugger to appreciate the beauty of our natural surroundings and to desire a clean, unpolluted environment. Plus, some green initiatives actually help you save money. For example, try using the compact fluorescent light bulbs. Based on a national average, they can save you $50 on energy bills and $20 more by not having to replace incandescent bulbs. I use them in my home!

I thought I would share a link to my blog posting that I wrote for work today, too. Please visit the link, and hope you had a great Earth Day (now, get a hair cut, hippy!).

Answers Systems Inc.: Happy Earth Day!

<fieldset class="zemanta-related" style="margin: 0.5em 0pt 1em; padding: 0pt;"><legend class="zemanta-title">Related articles</legend>

Eco-Friendlier Light Bulbs Announced [via Zemanta]

Environmental Myths Busted [via Zemanta]

</fieldset>

<!--

Yes, they watch TV. Mainly, we make them watch TV all day to distract them from the noises of the apartment complex. They bark at every little thing!

Anyway . . . so, Jerry Springer is on. What is up with this show? I know it's been for years, and I know it's been a fairly idiotic show for years. But, it's even more of a freak show than I remember watching. What is up with those puppets in the background? On today's episode, the guests are sitting on a car and revealing their incest crimes and what not. It's just not right!

I remember ten or more years ago when Jerry used to have a "straight" show. I even remember an episode about hate crime . . . it was a serious show. How did it devolve into this trash. And, while it's trash, I find myself still watching it. I am thoroughly amazed at what these folks are revealing. I am amazed that this has an audience. I won't watch it again by choice, but I am fascinated and disgusted at the same time.

Wow.

<fieldset class="zemanta-related" style="margin: 0.5em 0pt 1em; padding: 0pt;"><legend class="zemanta-title">Related articles</legend>

Springer opera not blasphemous, court rules [via Zemanta]

The doctor should get out [via Zemanta]

'Jerry Springer,' the Great American Musical [via Zemanta]

</fieldset>

<!--

I figured it might be a nice way to keep it "casual" and interesting rather than all this strictly business boringness.

Don't get me wrong . . . I know I will come off like a jerk, but the whole "Idol Gives Back" thing kind of makes me want to gag. I can't quite put my finger on why I want to gag, but I do.

Yes, I know this raises money to help people that really need help. I thought I was going to choke up when Annie Lennox started crying. It was very sad seeing those children in Africa that had no one to take care of them because their entire family was lost to AIDS. But . . . I think that's why it makes me feel icky.

Now, stay with me here before you let me have it with both barrels . . .

It just seems to me that American Idol started this whole "Idol Gives Back" as a way for Idol to "get back" some viewers who were getting tired of the same-old same old. I feel a bit exploited . . . they suck me in to watch their show and say, "look how socially conscious we are." That's not to say that some of the people on the show aren't totally, wonderful people. I think Bono and Annie Lennox really want to help people, for example.

I had been a loyal Idol viewer every year the show has been on, but last year I thought was lackluster. This year is kind of BLAH, too. I used to call and vote a zillion times for my favorite - Clay was ROBBED by the way - but now it's just "who cares?" for me. Sure there are some great singers, but we've seen this crap before, haven't we?

OK . . . Simon was just on with a family that doesn't have health insurance. He's being all nice and what not. It's just not right. Now, I'm not saying that he isn't nice. I am sure he is. He gave money to charity on Celebrity Apprentice. But, I don't watch American Idol to see him be a loving, caring teddy bear. I watch it to see what brutal truth he is going to serve up . . . and, he is almost always right.

I don't know. I don't mean to offend if you like "Idol Gives Back." I do think it is absolutely wonderful that money is being raised to help needy people. But, this medium makes me feel all "gaggy" inside. Maybe my real "gagginess" is that people must not give enough under ordinary circumstances. If people were really generous and caring, would we need "Idol Gives Back"? I don't think so . . . it would be just a nice, low-key, additional fundraiser.

That's my two cents. All my time and money go to the American Cancer Society and my church (sometimes ASPCA and the World Wildlife Fund, too). So, sorry Simon . . . I gave in my own community. But, I applaud the effort made by FOX in spite of the sense of icky-ness it inspires in me.
<!--

That's sad. Whatever your politics about guns and what all the NRA stands for, you gotta admit that the dude had some kick butt roles in his film days. He parted the Red Sea as Moses, he was the Omega Man (the original screen adaptation of I Am Legend - I think he overacted a bit and it was kind of campy, but I still liked it). But, his most awesome, kicking, rocking, spectacular movie of all time is Planet of the Apes. I bet he is rolling his eyes right now at the mere mention of that.

I remember watching that movie with my dad when I was little. Anytime it has come on television since that point, I have almost always opted to watch it. I just love the ending . . . even though it's no longer a surprise. "Damn you! Damn you all to Hell!"

Here's to you Bright Eyes!

By the way . . . I thought this article about Mr. Heston was kind of cute. I know why . . . it's a totally awesome show. I grew concerned, however, when I never saw it showing up in the Fall line up. Then it came back on with little fanfare. Thank goodness for Tivo, or I would have never known that it did come back on.

Anyway . . . But, if you are looking for a free, easy-to-use photo editing tool, you should check this site out: www.photoshop.com/express. It is from Adobe, so you know it's good stuff.

My Tweet Map: I am not actually sure how cool this really is since I only rarely use Twitter. Anyway, this service shows you on a map where your Twitter followers are located. I guess that's cool.

Bubble Wrap: just a cool place where you can relieve stress by popping virtual bubble wrap.<fieldset class="zemanta-related" style="margin: 0.5em 0pt 1em; padding: 0pt;"><legend class="zemanta-title">Related articles</legend>

Adobe launches Adobe Photoshop Express [via Zemanta]

</fieldset>

<!--

This site has a lot of great FULL EPISODES of great television shows AND FULL-LENGTH movies (some fairly current releases). They also have great clips you can embed in your blog/website/MySpace page.

This clip from Family Guy cracks me up. I know Family Guy isn't everybody's cup of tea, but it cracks me up. And, this clip is just so ludicrous, it's hilarious.

Enjoy!
<!--

I wrote a song, created a video interview, had "tour" t-shirts telling people to "rock the vote" and vote me as most original for my persona as the lead singer of Rabid Office Monkey. I even brought my guitar to work and performed a bit.

Needless to say . . . I won.

Four years later I uncovered the lyrics and decided to submit the song to Very Bad Poetry. It was accepted. Here's my acceptance email below. Be sure to check it out . . . . and rock on!

Good news! The poem you submitted to Very Bad Poetry was chosen to be on the front page in the near future. Tell your friends to expect that you'll be famous.

After their laughter drives you to the bottle, remember that Very Bad Poetry still loves you. By the way, you can see all of your poem by going to this link:

http://www.verybadpoetry.com/people/show/stacyrocks/

Sincerely,
Stephen
Very Bad Poetry

<!--
