Sorry for not posting for some time. Post season recovery is lazy time for me, then I just fell into the habit when the new season started.
In any case, I've started training again (targeting the ScotiaBank Waterfront Marathon - Toronto), so hope to bring tales of my running journeys to you more frequently.
Where Shall We Run?
OK, my quick topic today is where to run. And more Terryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11086286697233573721noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7324752414739667295.post-15109259310751138432008-05-14T19:05:00.006-04:002008-05-14T19:16:32.338-04:00Mississauga 2008 - Photographic EvidenceSome pictures from the race.
My, oh my. I'm running to hard. I should take it easy. Why strain myself so much... :)
The finish line and a big smile. Who doesn't love it when you finally stop running.
Do I look out of shape here? Either way, I needed some food. Mmm, tasty Milestones brunch and a sweet, sweet beer.

The weather started off great (at 7:30am) with temperatures a bit above 10 degrees, sun shining on us, and very low to no wind.
My coach had given me what I thought could be an aggressive goal - 1:36:30 I saw this a pushing it a bit since I was injured and not training for 5 weeks at the beginning of the season. But, ITerryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11086286697233573721noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7324752414739667295.post-71333861018788159712008-05-08T22:45:00.002-04:002008-05-08T22:52:08.365-04:00My TargetA season of some ups and downs, and I have arrived to the edge of race day. My final group training run was good yesterday (except for the cool rain). I felt strong, was able to maintain pace, and didn't feel tired. A good sign.
My coach (Kevin Smith - Marathon Dynamics) gave me the grave news - an aggressive target for my race. :) Not so back down from a challenge, I will approach that Terryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11086286697233573721noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7324752414739667295.post-4526832869642000882008-05-08T22:28:00.003-04:002008-05-08T22:44:22.195-04:00Race Day ApproachesAs the race day approaches we can all get butterflies in our bellies and our nerves can be on edge. However, there is no reason for that. There are some simple things to keep in mind a few days before the race that will help you perform at your best.
Pre-Race Day Strategies
Carb-loading: Most runners have heard of the need for carb loading. It helps our body stock up on some extra energy thatTerryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11086286697233573721noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7324752414739667295.post-43949468045789686712008-05-05T22:42:00.002-04:002008-05-05T22:49:59.179-04:00Mississauga 2008 - The Clock is TickingThe Mississauga Marathon is almost here (May 11). The final count down is approaching for the half marathon I signed up for. Normally I'm more exuberant about my races, but this time I'm not (at least, not yet).
My season was supposed to be preparing for the Mississauga full, but a snowboarding injury in January sidelined me for five weeks. Besides ruling out a full, it also impacted my Terryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11086286697233573721noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7324752414739667295.post-84945224731838977192008-05-05T21:50:00.004-04:002008-05-05T22:42:04.176-04:00Faster than a Speeding Runner - IntervalsSo you've run for several months now, doing a light jog 3-4 times a week. Perhaps you've also run a few races and had a lot of fun. Sounds good to most. But I think you may be more like me. You want more. It may be a faster race time. Perhaps really intense workouts. And maybe you just want to look cool. All very good reasons to start Speed Workouts!
Speed workouts are generally Terryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11086286697233573721noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7324752414739667295.post-14694436747530829012008-04-27T21:31:00.005-04:002008-04-27T22:48:15.037-04:00In the Beginner...Every runner has a beginning to the sport, and many of us who have run for a few years have some found memories of starting. But sometimes we also have some bad memories. A few common ones are shin splints and discouragement by not meeting goals. I was able to get through these difficult spots from advice from people how knew more than me. But not everyone will have the same luck. Here are aTerryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11086286697233573721noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7324752414739667295.post-41456014598333654342008-04-21T22:23:00.004-04:002008-04-21T22:55:49.451-04:00OMP FunTonight's run was a fun little number called an OMP (Ordinary Mortal Pace), or at least that's what the folks at Marathon Dynamics call it (my trainers). I did my scheduled 14km is 1h06m (about a 4:46/km pace), and I feel tired yet good all at the same time. However, I worry that one of my toe nails is going to get black and fall off, as it's been sore the past few days. The same one I lost atTerryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11086286697233573721noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7324752414739667295.post-88193907702046789282008-04-15T23:20:00.003-04:002008-04-15T23:34:54.241-04:00More MotivationYes, I know. My last entry was on motivation. But heck, so will today's entry as I'm just that crazy! Seriously. The tests say so.
Yesterday's article was typed while on the couch but as I hit Publish, I visualized why I want to run. The desire too get fitter, healthier, and faster. That got me off the couch, down to the gym, and then on the treadmill for a fast run. And I pushed hard Terryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11086286697233573721noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7324752414739667295.post-44849558060133894472008-04-14T21:26:00.006-04:002008-04-14T21:55:02.745-04:00MotivationAs I sit here on my comfortable couch with my laptop entertaining me and some nonsense on the big TV in the background, I ponder the concept of motivation. The motivation to get up, get out, and run when you just don't want to. The motivation to take the next step to a better, healthier body. The motivation to a more fulfilling life.
The Catch
As with anything good in life, there is a catchTerryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11086286697233573721noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7324752414739667295.post-54271181449493583172008-04-13T23:32:00.003-04:002008-04-13T23:35:13.310-04:00CONGRATULATIONS!Congratulations to some great runners who completed the London Marathon today. During one of your training seasons, have you ever had an injury where you lost a few weeks of training. Or perhaps you feel your workouts were not at the level they should. Then, you consciously decided to increase your training frequency or intensity to a level beyond what your schedule required? (Perhaps against the advice of the coach you pay good money for)?Terryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11086286697233573721noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7324752414739667295.post-77664523156693244692008-04-10T15:34:00.001-04:002008-04-10T15:35:28.862-04:00Good Luck!I want to wish Nathalie and Roger luck at the London (England) Marathon this weekend. This story isn't actually mine, by was told to me by my friend Kathleen. It's interesting and is a bit humourous. In a sadistic sort of way... ;)
Several years back Kathleen was excited about doing the Ottawa half marathon, and for two reasons. The race is a well known race with a beautiful route, and she would get to visit one of her friends she knew since high school Terryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11086286697233573721noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7324752414739667295.post-86232315933637962552008-04-09T21:54:00.003-04:002008-04-09T22:19:27.592-04:00Training Tip - TreadmillsThe Treadmill Blahs
Like many people, I've done my share fair of time on a treadmill. Whether it be to avoid nasty weather, reduce the impact on the body (versus pavement), or just for the convenience of it, we find ourselves there. Sometimes too often. You may have noticed that running on a treadmill isn't the most exciting experience and can feel like an eternity. During their walk, they suddenly noticed a large Grizzly bear in the distance. The bear, not liking it's territory being invaded, starts moving aggressively towards the trio. The doctor and accountant start to panic, not sure what do. Greeting Everyone!
I decided to create this blog as a fun way to capture some of my thoughts on running, share some of my ups and downs with friends and family (especially after races), and to provide any insights, training tips, and lessons learned with anyone who cares to know and learn.
BACKGROUND
During my youth, I never really took to running (sad, I know). While I (as we Terryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11086286697233573721noreply@blogger.com
