And after 6 year's worth of investigations, live episodes and celebrity participants we ask the question, how real is 'Most Haunted'?

Yvette Fielding and husband/co-producer Karl Beattie and the team take us to various apparently haunted locations across the UK and spend 24 hours on location to try and communicate successfully with so-called astral beings.

I've been watching this series on and off over the past years and find it extremely interesting. But, like many others, are increasingly frustrated by the lack of undeniable proof of the existence of spirits.

Most of any particular 'bumps in the night', strange noises and eyewitness accounts are more often than not laid to rest by on hand Parapsychologist and resident sceptic Ciarán O'Keeffe. As a viewer of the show I'm often amazed and slightly unnerved by some of the things I hear and witness in the 'final cut' of each episode. Then O'Keefe appears at the end and suggests a number of other more grounded reasoning behind these apparent supernatural goings-on.

Where the hell's the Controlled Testing?

Most Haunted is frustrating on so many levels, none more than the lack of attempting to control particular environments for more substantial investigations. Most of the time each team member equipped with a camera with night-vision capabilities prefers to actually sit in a darkened room and film their face and not the actual room where it seems more of the action occurs. The majority who think viewers will find the teams reactions more exciting than the actual possibility of catching a glimpse of uninterupted evidence is laughable.

Each investigation often tries slightly different attempts to communicate. Yet, however, after all these years and all these episodes there still hasn't been a single, solitary undeniable piece of evidence to convince me. Here's a few more of my gripes...

Lock down cameras. Try wide shots of whole rooms/areas when the team are in there. This may actually capture stone throwing and the source of certain noises and light anomolies. Table movement always seems to be slightly out of shot on one end where of course a team member could be controlling the movement.

Use digital cameras. I watched a paranormal investigation show once on late night TV and they took lots and lots of photos of each area at night. And there were some fantastic and very difficult to explain outcomes. To me a video camera is simply replicating what the eye sees. An actual digtial camera can capture split seconds that the eye can easily miss, especially in pitch dark scenarios.

STOP FILMING YOURSELF! Why the need to film your own reactions. We've seen them a million times over. It's no good filming yourself and talking to the camera (which can STILL be done without the camera being on you) only to have a strange shadow walk past or a bang from across the room and you missing the shot. More often than not as soon as some strange occurrence happens the camera person instantly swings the camera around to try and film the source only to find out they're WAY TOO LATE. Unfortunately this just adds to the sceptisism of the whole experience.

I will continue to watch. And I wouldn't mind trying it myself. But let's hope the next season of Most Haunted will take on board some no-brainer suggestions from it's critics.
Horror Asylumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10431594602113951635noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7324638068221788597.post-80499517308317278772008-01-08T20:47:00.000Z2008-01-10T01:27:55.929ZNew Sexy Black Devil Doll PicsFour brand new behind the scenes Black Devil Doll have been posted up to the official site! Everyone slates them, most people don't want them but why do the studios keep getting them made and why do they keep making money? So it begs the real question. Is there a genuine problem with horror rehashes?

Im the past few years we've seen an incredible increase in the amount of horror movies that have been remade. We've seen remakes of existing non-english speaking international horror's such as The Ring and The Grudge. We've seen remakes hiding behind descriptions such as 're-imagining' like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. And hell, we've even seen remakes of remakes!!! So clearly we're swamped, we're spoilt for choice. Is Hollywood completely out of ideas, has it dried up that quick that no-one can be bothered anymore.

It's not just horror of course, most genres in the past decade have been victim to the dreaded remake status. Yet horror seems the most popular choice. But the truth is they don't exactly get rave reviews but they make a pretty penny. So as long as money outweighs the artistic flair and creativeness of writers and filmmakers out there we're gonna be stuck with them for a very long time to come.

Everyone has their opinion when it comes to a whether or not you think a movie works, or even if it's good or not. I admit I appreciate tripe sometimes and love mindless dreg. But not always. But in all cases I would ALWAYS suggest trying the original first. It's easy to be sucked into the campaigns these days that 'big up' the latest horror fest, especially if you're young and more willing to pay your bucks to see a fresh and vividly coloured gore-fest as opposed to old grainy black and white horror flick that wouldn't these days look out of place on afternoon tv. But I would ask you to reconsider and always expericence the original, for what it is, before taking on the modern retelling.

And in case you were really interested. Here's a little shortlist of what I consider to be the best of the remakes in the past 10 years.

Dawn of the Dead (great retelling and the original is actually my fave zombie movie)
Halloween (brave and brutally shocking, extremly well executed)
House on Haunted Hill (my guilty pleasure, well hammed up by Geoffrey Rush)
The Ring (not as genuinely terrifying as the original but a damn good effort)
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (gory and nasty and pretty well done really)
The Hills Have Eyes (shocking and sick - loved it!)

And here are the ones to avoid - but keep in mind, it might not all be down to it being a bad remake. But I think it would be better to check out the original first

Dark Water (absolutely terrible)
The Grudge (better than Dark Water but still disappointing)
The Omen (absolutely pointless project)
The Haunting (best bit was seeing Owen Wilson decapitated)
Psycho (ideal for modern audiences, but probably a pointless shot by shot retelling)
Black Christmas (made me almost lose faith in horror and life)
The Wicker Man (tried to forget about this. god damn you Cage!)

And finally.....
When A Stranger Calls (f'cking pointless and equally awful. nuff said)

And finally how about the remakes that scare the hell of me just thinking that people would even consider redoing...

The Evil Dead (why even try. still feel Evil Dead 2 was good enough to be a remake)
The Fly (will have to pretty special to beat Cronenbourg's 1986 effort)
Last House on the Left (gonna have to be pretty shocking)
Prom Night (going out on a limb and saying this will be hugely disappointing)
Piranha (oh go on then)
The Thing (why oh why again!!!!?)
Friday the 13th (will have to do something special!)

There you have it. They're going to be releasing the film through Raimi's Ghosthouse Pictures, and possibly be the first great film to come out of there. Raimi's longtime partner in crime Rob Tabert will be co-producing, and had some good words to say about the project.

"Sam calls it a 'spook-a-blast,' a wild ride with all the chills and spills that 'Evil Dead' delivered, without relying on the excessive violence of that film," Tapert said. "When one has done three very expensive movies, they get used to eating caviar. Sam will have to ponder what it means to come down from the mountaintop for a moment."

"The appeal to Sam on 'Drag Me to Hell' was returning to what he had once done and loved doing,, which was entertaining a very specific group of fans and providing a roller coaster ride for them," Tapert said. "He doesn't have the enormous pressure here that goes with handling a hundreds of millions of dollars franchise."

After this, Raimi is still planned to go to do The Hobbit since Peter Jackson wants nothing to do with it.Horror Asylumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10431594602113951635noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7324638068221788597.post-49572993817851495832007-12-19T19:03:00.000Z2007-12-19T19:04:20.742Z30 Days of Night Horror Movie ReviewJosh Hartnett top lines the latest horror movie from Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures and it’s a bloody brilliant vampire flick.

Set in Barrow Alaska, 30 Days of Night (which is based on the groundbreaking graphic novel of the same name) begins as the inhabitants prepare themselves for a month without sunlight. As the residents begin boarding up their houses and preparing for the harsh winter, a mysterious stranger appears in town and sets about cutting them off from the rest of the world. As the sun sets, Sheriff Eben and his estranged Fire Marshall wife Stella (who finds herself stranded in town after an accident causes her to miss the last flight out of Barrow) discover that they are completely isolated for the next four weeks…and that’s when the vampires show up…but how can they be stopped when sunlight never comes?

Ghost House Pictures has done it again. This film looks amazing, has a wonderful cast and is scary, violent and very gory. I can’t believe it’s only a 15 here in the UK.

I was a huge fan of director David Slade’s previous film Hard Candy and he once again proves his talents by making an entirely different kind of genre film. Hard Candy was light, bright and largely suggestive, 30 Days of Night is dark and very visceral.

The cast are all excellent, as is the effects work, set pieces, stunt work, locations and the creepy unusual score.

There are however a few elements which prevent the film from being totally flawless and these are mainly the disappearance and reappearance of characters throughout the run time. Eben’s brother Jake seems to have no trouble wandering around in just a jumper (when everyone else is kitted out in huge parkas, hats and mittens) and outrunning the vamps, and despite addressing a lack of hiding places earlier in the film (not to mention the fact that everyone in town is supposedly dead except our main characters) as the vamps would smell them out, a load of people fill the streets at the climax…where the hell were they hiding for a month?

OVERALL SUMMARY
30 Days of Night is gorgeously shot, well written, directed and acted and is unsettling to watch. This is a cut above the rest of the Halloween season’s big screen offerings.

Horror Asylumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10431594602113951635noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7324638068221788597.post-52341806648427073502007-12-19T19:01:00.001Z2007-12-19T19:02:25.321ZCold Prey: Horror Movie ReviewThis Norwegian slasher movie has been causing a stir amongst genre fans this past year after a successful theatrical run in its homeland and now a wide DVD release in the UK courtesy of Metrodome Distribution.

The film focuses on five friends who go skiing at a remote mountain resort. When one of them becomes injured, the group is forced to seek shelter in the abandoned lodge buildings. It soon transpires that they are not alone.

This opens with a montage of TV footage and newspaper reports detailing searches for literally hundreds of missing skiers. We then meet our core group of characters before we are treated to some truly breathtaking scenery.

Atmospheric with some gorgeous overhead helicopter shots throughout, the locations are amazing, as is production design and the photography is similarly beautiful throughout. This film manages to be gritty without looking any less aesthetically pleasing.

There is quite a bit of blood and many wince inducing moments but these are achieved without ever having to be excessively gratuitous or gory. The cast are likeable and do good jobs and there is even some characterization going on here which is scarce in much of the genre’s similar efforts.

OVERALL SUMMARY
Cold Prey is not as terrifying or as gory as the critics would have you believe, but it is an extremely well made foreign slasher and one which I would highly recommend to genre fans.

Horror Asylumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10431594602113951635noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7324638068221788597.post-73191042456166817822007-12-19T18:15:00.000Z2007-12-19T18:23:54.295ZDance of the Dead Zombie Pics!Link: http://www.horror-asylum.com/news/article.asp?item=6073

Gregg Bishop's Dance of the Dead has given B-D a number of new world premiere stills.

On the night of the big High-School Prom, the dead rise to eat the living, and the only people who can stop them are the losers who couldn't get dates to the dance.

Horror Asylumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10431594602113951635noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7324638068221788597.post-58688589319612980332007-12-19T18:14:00.002Z2007-12-19T18:15:43.906ZWerewolf Women of the S.S Film
Rob Zombie has updated his blog with a simple question; "How many of you would like to see a full length movie of WEREWOLF WOMEN OF THE SS?" We also know that Eli Roth will be releasing his TRAILER TRASH feature next summer.

In the end, the question may mean nothing but it seems that if he's asking, it's a good bet he has a financial backer (Dimension or someone else) for the project and he has a window in which he may direct it if the interest is high enough from his fanbase.

Here's the original trailer from the GRINDHOUSE film...

Horror Asylumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10431594602113951635noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7324638068221788597.post-13266008145552767582007-12-19T18:14:00.001Z2007-12-19T18:14:26.241ZNew Terminator 4 Plot Details!Joblo reports:
After a lot of back and forth on Christian Bale's role in TERMINATOR SALVATION: THE FUTURE BEGINS, CHUD are finally able to shine some light on the character and the plot. As it turns out, Bale's John Connor is NOT a major character in TERMINATOR SALVATION.

In fact they say he is "barely" in the script. The main character of SALVATION is Marcus, a "Riddick" like character who "was put 'out of commission' before the nuclear holocaust on Judgment Day and he wakes up about 15 years before the future we see in the original Terminator films, which puts the movie at about 2015 or so." So why did producers say Bale was "the star?" Well it's all in semantics. They said, "John Connor is an ongoing, very central character throughout the next trilogy." And CHUD confirms that. Bale's Connor will be a much bigger role in parts 5 and 6 but in SALVATION, his role is minor.

To read more about details from TERMINATOR SALVATION, which McG is scheduled to direct early next year, click here to head over to CHUD.Horror Asylumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10431594602113951635noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7324638068221788597.post-26298273865959519842007-12-19T18:13:00.001Z2007-12-19T18:13:45.485ZScreenings Planned for AVP 2Fox has announced via a press release that they will be giving special advance screenings of ALIENS VS. Kay plays the lead, Charlie...of course, knowing nothing about the plot it’s hard to tell you guys what that role entrails, but I can almost guarantee she’ll get bloody at some point.

Also returning from Domain are Naika Malveaux, Krystal Freeman and Brent D. Davidson told Dread Central, "Filling the shoes of "The Beast" is Jeremy Sumrall, who many convention goers may know as proprietor of the horror merchandise boutique Necrobilia."

"These guys have been so much fun to work with, I sometimes have to remind myself that it is in fact work." Davidson admitted, "Be sure to say hi to the cast if you see them on the 2008 convention circuit!
