Splutter from the Gutter (A tour report)

I spent the weekend on a caravan park,
In the heart of the Dorset moor,
And all I could hear for all of that time,
Was the Pumas and the Panthers roar.

It was Saturday morn and we all had our horns
And to some that was much to their liking
And with our swords and our shields we were starting to feel
We were every inch a Viking.

Mr Brining, coach marshall, had a list with every name
But no-one understood a single word
“Will’t thowt get on’t kerch”, he said “It’s the blerr thing erver therr”
And people drifted on board.

“Are you sure that you’re sure, that your name is Clive Shaw
Cos departure time does apprerch
And you’re wasting my time and the people behind
So, Is there a Clive Shaw on this kerch?”

Sandford and Wareham were all farming stock
They were big and it looked quite a match
They’d bred them tall and they’d bred them wide
But they hadn’t bred them to catch.

Ellis had a run, round in circles I remember
Then he kicked the ball away
But then he scored a hat-trick so his mum was fined a pound
And that would surely make her day.

Then over the line to the cheers of crowd
Dived the figure of a sprightly fellow
And all of them whooped as they came to realise
It was a first for the mighty Caio Belo.

Then Ruislip were next, kidding Mr. Hitler
A few lucky tries sealed our fate
But it didn’t really matter cos it was after beer o’clock
We were due in the bar and we were late.

Later it rained and it would not go away
The weather that day really stunk
But on the other hand it was a good excuse
For staying indoors and getting drunk.

Into the pool for an afternoon dip
And a chance to give the coaches a splash
And not to forget the afternoon spent
In fleecing the arcade of its cash

And then to the pub for beer and for chips
To chill out with some tasty snacks
But no, Judge Cowell convened his court
And that was no time to relax.

The learned Mr. Griffin plied his trade at the bar
No misdemeanour went overlooked
If Mrs Hales was dispatched to bring you to the judge
Well basically….you were cooked.

The crimes were gruesome and justice was dispatched
With neither pity nor remorse
And pints were sunk, with a chilli in addition
And a handful of crackers of course.

With parents down the road, the kids could run wild
Running rings round the security guard
He'd tried to remove them from the ball pool
And he'd threatened the yellow card

Jumping off balconies, to escape his grasp
They were caught, but showed no remorse
When asked which team they all played for
They answered, "Ruislip, of course".

Cometh the hour, cometh the man
Cometh the hour forward, cometh twenty tired players
Beaten by Bournemouth, New Milton and the Cornish
And we failed to be Welsh dragon slayers.

Mr. A was the ref, a bit blind, it is alleged
Made up the rules, technically speakin
He gave away a penalty for a very strange offence
The player was sporting a Mohican.

But who can complain when the sun’s in the sky
And all are relaxed in manner
Who needs a parrot when the cheerleaders sing
And you unfurl the brand new banner.

Give us a T, and a W, and an I. C. K.
Give us an E and an H.A.M.
But please can you promise that whatever you do
Next time, can we also have an “N”.

The tour is a laugh and you’re not supposed to win
Just as well, cos we only scored one
But could we have enjoyed ourselves just a little more
Well maybe, if we’d only scored None.

I spent the weekend on a caravan park,
And I can’t wait for next year’s tour,
For the sport and the laughs and maybe some drinks,
And the Pumas and the Panthers roar.

What a great day!! Medals all round

Firstly I like to say how proud I am of you all. We gave our best showing at a tournament ever. The Pumas won the Team development shield and the Panthers came runners up in the bowl final.

New players George, Jake and Dean played superbly fitting into the team brilliantly. Duggie had a storming game tackling everything that moved. The whole team played for each other and as one of the Puma's coaches I was incredibly happy. We have had some difficult times at festivals, but with draws against Roslyn Park B's and Hackney Bulls, the only loss of the day was to Teddington. Sunday showed how much you guys have improved and you should all feel very proud.

The Panthers were unlucky to be beaten in the second pool game against Ruislip with them scoring during the last play of the game. The Ref commented on what a great game both teams had played. In the Quarter final we beat Saracens 28-0 which was a fantastic result. After going behind by a try in the semi final against Teddington the boys battled away. Smellis, oops sorry, Ellis held his nerve to convert the try making us 7-5 winners. In the final against London Welsh we held out well. Welsh were a great team and played good rugby beating us and winning the bowl.

Once again we are extremely proud of you all.

Tour

On Friday the 28^th March the minis are going on tour, for the guys that are not touring there probably won't be any rugby that weekend. Margaret and Sam have ordered the boys that are going on tour hoodies and bags. If you are not coming on tour and wish to purchase any of these items please speak to either of them this weekend.

A Plate for the Pumas!

Well done to the Pumas who won the Plate in the C Tournament at Imber Court today

In a closely contested final they beat Rosslyn Park by 1 try to 0, the try scored by Alex. Congratulations to the whole team who played with massive commitment in every game.

In the A tournament the Panthers fought valiantly through a tough draw to make the final of the Bowl, where they went down to London Welsh.

Well do to both teams, for an excellent tournament.

Newsletter #3 - The Carwash

Well done to all the boys and parents who took part in the car wash on Sunday. We raised £205 which will pay for the end of season trophies. Next time we do car washing we will be a bit more organized and wash only 2 cars at a time. Everyone worked extremely hard. Steve Axbey took a picture of Steve Brinning helping out.

Middlesex Festivals

The Middlesex A, B, C festivals are to be held on the same weekend this year (it's to stop clubs putting A teams into the B tournament). They are being held at Imber Court (Teddingtons ground) on Sunday 9^th March. We have 2 teams entered so I need you all to play. If you are not available to play please let me know as soon as possible. My mobile number is 07888-678352. I also need you all to be at training on Sunday so we can work on lineouts, scrums, plays etc.

Newsletter

Mums and Dads please can you get the boys to read the news letter's hopefully it is way for them to be kept informed about what is happening in our age group. We will be updating the web site soon and hope the boys will be able to access it. Once updated, we will be posting squad lists, team selection and other information about the coming weeks. Finally if you or the boys have any news about things outside of rugby let me know and we can put it on the web site.

After a fantastic day at Rugby St Andrews we all made it back in one piece.

Firstly, I would like to congratulate you all on how well you all behaved at Rugby St Andrews club house and on the tour of the school. You were all a credit to me and the club. Secondly, how smart you all looked in your shirts and ties.

The rugby we played was superb, the Panthers ran out fairly easy winners in the first game with Alfie scoring his first try and being picked as man of the match, and Ali Shaw also scoring his first try and costing his Dad a round of drinks, the Guiness was superb!

However, the performance of the day for me was by the Pumas. They played against Rugby St Andrews 1^st team that contained of 5 under 12's. Whilst they lost (by only one try) they battled for the entire game and in my opinion they were defeated by a lucky try.

The tackling was outstanding with Ollie, the man of the match, leading from the front as captain, although every single player stood up to be counted. Duggie made a number of storming runs and with some great kicking by Joe we played the better rugby. Our pack of Ryan, Sam, Gareth, Ciao and Duggie pushed St Andrews back in the scrums, despite us being about 4 stone lighter. Luke made hard yards from quick tap penalties. The backline of Abu, Alex, Armand and Ashley (who stopped everyone from coming down his wing with a number of big tackles) were magnificent in not letting the bigger under 12's break through. At the end of the match I was nearly in tears (what a big baby), and by the end of our post match team talk my eyes were truly glistening. I am very proud of the entire U11's squad.

Quins Curtain Raiser

On Saturday we took part in the Quins Curtain raiser (we only played on the park at the back of the stoop not on the pitches). The Panthers played very well losing by 1 try to last years' winners Upminster. In the second game we lost 10-5, with Miles scoring his first try for Twickenham, and then crossing the line a second time with the 'try' unfortunately disallowed.
We won the last game against Upminsters B's with Jack H scoring his first try through sheer determination. You should all remember that you can beat skill but you can't beat luck and on this day luck was not with us. But all the mums and dad thought you played brilliantly.

Carwash

On Sunday 24^th February we will be holding a fund raising carwash. Can everyone get to the club for 9:30am as we want to be set up and ready to go by 10:00am. If your Mum or Dad has a spare shammy leather then bring it with you and if you're not around then can you let me know. I hope that everyone will take part as the funds we raise pay towards your gifts, ties and end of season trophies.

Coaching

This Wednesday Clive See and a few of his under 17's will be coming down to take a training session. Clive is the head coach of the under 17's, they are the most successful team Twickenham have produced. A large number of his players play for Middlessex and he has also had a lad selected for Wasps and England, which is quite an honour. They have also won the league and cup a number of times. They like us have fairly small players so they have developed great passing and speed, which hopefully they can help to pass onto us. Please try to make the session if you can It will be of great benefit.

Pumas Grasshopper B Festival

The Pumas played in their first festival of 2007/8 this weekend, when they travelled to nearby Grasshoppers for their B Festival. In glorious, warm sunshine they played in high spirits and were unlucky to be drawn in a strong group with Teddington and Farnham.

Losing the first two games the Pumas faced Ealing for the 3rd/4th place playoff and came alive, scoring two excellent forwards' tries, with first Callum and then Ollie&Kieran being forced across the line

Ealing fought back gallantly and scored two tries of their own to make the final score 2-2

Congratulations to Alfie and Abu in theit first festival, and to Caio who was awarded Greg's player of the day:

Good Results at London Welsh

After a disappointment at Farnham last week, the Panthers and Pumas turned in excellent performances at London Welsh. With both teams turning in the best performances of the season, spectators enjoyed two great games of rugby.

The Panthers took an early lead through Callum, and held on to it almost to the end when a breakaway try from Welsh equalled the score.

The Pumas ran in handy winners, 2 tries to nil with Ellis and Luke scoring. Our latest new joiner Abu playing a fine game on the wing.

The Panthers and Pumas always welcome new players, experienced or beginners.

We run two teams: the Panthers and, um, the Pumas and all members of the squad play in matches.

We train on Sundays 10am - noon, and on Wednesday evenings 7pm - 8pm. Matches are on Sunday mornings.

You can just turn up at any training session (make sure you bring your boots, and a mouthguard) - check the fixture list to make sure we are not playing away, or phone us first: contacts on this page
