Veteran NAIA sports commentator Jason Dannelly will be the color analyst for the Montana Tech at Carroll College matchup. Dannelly is the director of college relations for College Fanz and producer of the College Fanz NAIA Football Game of the Week.

Carroll College enters Saturday’s game with a 7-0 overall record and a 6-0 record in the Frontier Conference following a 32-0 victory over Montana State University Northern on Saturday, October 10th. The Fighting Saints are coached by Mike Van Diest. During his 10 years as head coach, Van Diest has led the Fighting Saints to five National Championships in the last seven years, which has been one of the most dominating runs in college football history. The Saints have posted a 117-19 record during the past 10 seasons, including a 76-10 Frontier Conference record. The Fighting Saints have earned nine consecutive Frontier Conference Championships. In 2008, the Saints finished 13-1, with their lone loss to the University of Sioux Falls in the National Championship game.

Montana Tech is 4-3 overall and 4-2 in the Frontier Conference following their third straight win on Saturday, October 10th, beating Montana Western 16-9 in Butte, Montana. This is Bob Green’s 23rd season as head coach of the Orediggers. In the past 22 years, the Orediggers football team has placed first, tied for first, or second in the Frontier Conference 15 times, with an overall record of 128-106-1.

ISMPP Supports Best Practices and Transparency in Medical Publications: Better Understanding of Terms Such as “Ghostwriting” Needed

Briarcliff Manor, NY – October 5, 2009 -- The mission of the International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP) is to advance the medical publication profession through education and advocacy. The organization believes that to correct the growing misperceptions in the medical literature and lay press around a number of critical issues involving medical publications, such as the perception that all medical writing is performed by “ghostwriters,” it is critically important for ISMPP to advocate faster adoption of standards and best practices.

“We support full transparency around data disclosure, acknowledgment and disclosure of professional medical writers, and funding sources. We have the same commitment as the health care community and the public in ensuring medical research and opinion are made available via a transparent, rigorous, and professional process, and support all best practices and current guidelines from organizations such as the International Council of Medical Journal Editors,” said Al Weigel, President of ISMPP.

Increased attention has recently been given to the use of unacknowledged medical writers (termed “ghostwriters”), a practice distinct from the appropriate, fully disclosed, and acknowledged use of professional medical writers. The editor of Annals of Internal Medicine, Christine Laine, noted the distinction in a related article in the Philadelphia Inquirer (September 20, 2009), saying, ‘We don’t think the writing assistance per se is bad, it’s when it’s not disclosed that it’s a problem.” A recent article in the Journal of the American Medical Association also reported a significant decrease in unacknowledged medical writing assistance (ghostwriting), but further progress needs to be made.

“Academic and industry involvement in medical publications will continue to be the subject of media scrutiny and criticism. While it is important to properly identify poor practices, we should not generalize or attribute poor practices in one small area to the entire industry,” said Julia Ralston, President-Elect of ISMPP. “Responsible medical writing and publication planning support the full disclosure of scientific data and ultimately benefit the public.”

ISMPP will continue to undertake a set of educational initiatives and reinforce best practices on timely issues surrounding medical publications. International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP) Position Statement: The Role of the Professional Medical Writer was published in a peer-reviewed journal (Current Medical Research and Opinion. 2007;23(8):1837-1840) to delineate the differences between recognized professional medical writers and undisclosed ghostwriters. As part of the organization’s ongoing commitment, a key guidance document, developed by an ISMPP Steering Committee, will soon be available that updates the initial Good Publication Practice guidelines, published in 2003. This guidance document endorses the need for practitioners to follow other key guidance documents such as those of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. The reality is that publication standards have advanced tremendously in recent years and all stakeholders in this multidisciplinary process need to act in a professional manner consistent with the latest standards and guidelines.

She is currently a board member of the Philadelphia Workforce Development Corporation, and chairs the ex-offenders task force for the Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board.

Allie recently was one of four local women business and community leaders speaking in the panel discussion, “Women Take Charge – Steps for Getting What You Want Out of Life.” Earlier this year, she was one of four local business and community leaders appearing on a WHYY-TV special program on Social Entrepreneurship, WHYY Boomervision! Special on Social Entrepreneurship, taped before a live studio audience at the WHYY Technology Center in Philadelphia. The program will be broadcast later this year on the Philadelphia PBS station.

Originally unable to find employment in her chosen field after college graduation, Allie was a single parent determined to find a way to support herself and her child. She had accompanied a friend on a job cleaning a home, and realized that there was an excellent income potential in cleaning houses. She answered newspaper advertisements for “cleaning ladies,” and began cleaning homes throughout Philadelphia’s suburban Main Line.

Team Clean grew when Allie began to respond to those newspaper ads by hiring women herself and sending them off in pairs to clean homes, establishing the burgeoning company’s “team” approach to cleaning. She took her first commercial contract in 1985 with the Upper Main Line YMCA.

In April 2007, she was honored by the Philadelphia Phillies with the inaugural Most Valuable Diverse Business Partner during ceremonies on Jackie Robinson Day at Citizens Bank Park.

In 1994, the African American Chamber of Commerce honored Allie with their Entrepreneurial Spirit Award, and in 1995 she received the Business Acumen Award from the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women. In 1996, Team Clean was selected as one of Philadelphia’s 100 Fastest Growing Small Businesses by the Wharton Small Business Development Center and the Philadelphia Business Journal, and in 1997 Allie was named one of Pennsylvania’s 50 Best Women in Business. Also in 1997, Allie and Team Clean received the Special Recognition Award for Excellence of Service from the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

In 2001, she was selected by the U.S. Small Business Administration as the "District Minority Small Business Person of the Year." The Business Center at New Covenant Campus honored Allie in 2006 with their Harriet Tubman Trailblazer Award. In addition, Allie has received the 62nd National Freedom Day Community Service Award, the City of Philadelphia’s Supply, Service and Equipment Award, and the Main Line Martin Luther King Jr. Association’s Business Leadership Award.

A graduate of Wilberforce University with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Vocational Rehabilitation, Allie has attended the Loyola Advanced Minority Business Executive Program as well as several courses at The Wharton Small Business Development Center.

Throughout the history of her company, Allie has remained committed to community service. She is an active board member of a number of non-profit organizations, including the African-American Chamber of Commerce, the Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board, and the Universal Charter School.

Grand Island, Nebraska – August 18, 2009 – The third annual College Fanz™ Sports Network “First Down Classic” features two exciting football games pitting four of leading NAIA football programs in a doubleheader Saturday, August 29th in suburban Kansas City.

The first-ever meeting between Avila University and Doane College is scheduled for 1 p.m. Central at Platte County R3 High School’s Pirate Stadium in Platte City, Missouri.

The nightcap features McKendree University and Ottawa University (also meeting on the gridiron for the first time) in a contest that begins at 7 p.m. Central.

Both games of the College Fanz Sports Network “First Down Classic” will be the inaugural season premiere of the College Fanz NAIA Football Game of the Week broadcast, available live on http://www.collegefanz.com/.

The Doane College Tigers (out of Crete, Nebraska) are coached by Matt Franzen, entering his third season as head coach. Doane won the “First Down Classic” last season with a 15-12 victory over William Jewell College on a 47-yard game winning field goal by freshman Dustin Groteluschen. The Tigers won just four games a year ago, but return 11 starters on offense and seven on defense.

The Eagles of Avila University (Kansas City, MO) are appearing in the “First Down Classic” for the first time. Head coach Bruce Young will have the challenge of leading a young squad that does have experience, with 17 returning starters (nine on offense, eight on defense). Despite just winning two games in 2008, the Eagles set a new record with eight Heart of America Athletic Conference selections. Avila returns six of the eight to lead the team this season.

Ottawa University (Ottawa, KS) is competing in the “First Down Classic” for the first time, and hopes to capitalize on their 8-2 record last season that led the Braves to a second place finish in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. Head coach Kent Kessinger’s Ottawa squad led the KCAC last season averaging 441.2 yards per game. The Brave defense was at the top of the conference after giving up just 1,695 passing yards last season. Their defense will be lead by linebacker Ross Diehl, who collected 9.5 sacks last season.

Also making their “First Down Classic” debut are the McKendree Bearcats (Lebanon, IL. They return 14 starters from last year’s squad, seven on offense and seven on defense. Head coach Carl Poelker enters his 28th season as a college head coach (and 14th season with the Bearcats) looking to improve on a 6-4 finish from 2008. The Bearcats finished in a three-way tie for second in the Mid-States Football Association Midwest League standings. McKendree finished last season riding a three-game win streak and will try to carry that momentum over to this season.

In the 2007 “First Down Classic,” MidAmerica Nazarene defeated Azuza Pacific, 59-38, while in 2008 Doane defeated William Jewell, 15-12. This year’s “First Down Classic” is the first doubleheader, but like the others, will be played in Platte County R3 High School’s Pirate Stadium in Platte City, Missouri (located approximately five miles from Kansas City International Airport.

Each “state-of-the-art” broadcast will include full nine-camera production (six in-stadium), graphics, expert broadcasters, half-time features and interviews with coaches, players, and college officials.

The inaugural season premiere is Saturday, August 29th, with live coverage of the first-ever meeting between Avila University and Doane College at 2 p.m. Eastern / 1 p.m. Central. It is the opener of a day-night double-header, with live coverage of the McKendree University and Ottawa University contest to follow at 8 p.m. Eastern / 7 p.m. Central.

In the weeks that follow, the College Fanz NAIA Football Game of the Week broadcast and production team will travel across America in the innovative College Fanz Van provided by The Prestige Traveler -- Innovation on the Move. The College Fanz Van will visit college campuses around the country, and fanz in attendance can join the broadcast team for special pre-and-post-game events broadcast live from each campus. The College Fanz Van and the modified 16' Mobile Broadcasting Unit housed in a Wells Cargo trailer will be at the heart of every broadcast on campus, where the broadcast team will present special reports surrounding the live webcasts.

“The College Fanz Report,” also debuting this month, will be broadcast several times daily “on the road” and from the College Fanz studio, providing exclusive coverage of all NAIA college athletics.

Bill Rasmussen will serve as Executive Producer for the College Fanz NAIA Football Game of the Week. The founder of ESPN is himself a veteran radio and television broadcaster. After an earlier successful entrepreneurial venture in the advertising business, Rasmussen’s career in the media began at WTTT radio in Amherst, Massachusetts, in 1962. In 1965, he moved to WWLP-TV, Springfield, where he spent eight years as Sports Director and two years as News Director. During these years, he handled numerous football, basketball, baseball and hockey play-by-play assignments on both radio and television. In 1974, he left Springfield to join hockey’s New England Whalers as Communications Director. At the conclusion of the 1977-78 World Hockey Association season, Rasmussen was fired by the Whalers. Thus began the pursuit of the ESPN dream, incorporating the fledgling network on July 14, 1978. Fourteen months later, at 7 p.m. on September 7, 1979, Rasmussen’s dream, ESPN, became reality.

In the broadcast booth for the College Fanz NAIA Football Game of the Week are Jason Dannelly (color) and John Thayer (play-by-play).

Dannelly is Producer for the College Fanz NAIA Football Game of the Week. A veteran NAIA sports commentator, he is the Director of College Relations for College Fanz. Over the past several years, Dannelly has become the “guru” of the NAIA college sports scene, called upon for his expertise by a variety of media outlets. Dannelly launched the Victory Sports Network, the home for all things NAIA, in 2002. It quickly became the leading voice for NAIA college sports through its web sites, print magazines, and syndicated radio broadcasts. Victory Sports Network was acquired by College Fanz in November 2008.

Thayer has experience in print and online media as well as play-by-play and on-air hosting duties at a variety of radio and television stations in Colorado and Nebraska. Thayer’s extensive expertise in NAIA college sports includes his tenure as sports director at Doane College Campus Media for three years, as well as extensive coverage of NAIA sports for the Victory Sports Network.

The hosts for the pre-and post-game shows are Brandi Benson and Adam Maser.

Benson's experience includes play-by-play, color commentary and sports updates on numerous radio stations in Northeast Wyoming, including her role as a DJ for the top country music station in the state. Benson recently received honors from the Wyoming Association of Broadcasters for best large market play-by-play. A graduate of Hastings College, she provided play-by-play and color commentary for three years for the Broncos athletic teams, highlighted by her coverage of the NAIA Women's DII National Basketball Championship Tournament.

Maser's experience includes online reporting and video production as the Multimedia Content Producer for the Grand Island (NE) Independent along with play-by-play and color commentating duties for radio and web in Nebraska. A graduate of Hastings College, Maser was sports director for Hometown Family Radio based in McCook, Nebraska.

The director of the College Fanz NAIA Football Game of the Week is Wade Tracy. As the sports information director at Concordia University, he co-created the Concordia Sports Network, which provided audio broadcasts for all 18 varsity sports at the NAIA school, in 2007. In 2008, Tracy successfully expanded Concordia Sports Network coverage to include video broadcasts of home football, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s’ basketball games and track meets. He was also the co-creator of the “Bulldog Blitz”, a weekly radio show recapping the week in Bulldog athletics.

Bret Beachner is the associate director of the College Fanz NAIA Football Game of the Week. He was the backup quarterback and senior captain of the University of Sioux Falls football team that captured the NAIA National Championship in 2008. The Sioux Falls Cougars made three consecutive National Championship appearances during Beachner’s career in 2006, 2007, and 2008 and also claimed the title in 2006.

Strickland Sports Consulting Selected to Coordinate Marketing & Sponsorship Rights RFP for Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference

Philadelphia, PA -- June 15, 2009 -- Strickland Sports Consulting has been selected to coordinate the RFP process for the marketing and sponsorship rights for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). Some of the leading marketing rights companies in the country are expected to submit proposals to acquire the rights to the MAAC property.

“As a mid-major Division I conference with a strong metro New York presence, the MAAC has some very intriguing assets,” said President & CEO Bill Strickland. “It has an outstanding television package through its ESPN and MSG Network relationships, a successful postseason basketball tournament, and is able to provide the kind of campus access a sponsor does not normally see from a conference sponsorship. The MAAC is a property with a unique value proposition.”

The MAAC currently handles its sponsorship program in-house. MAAC Commissioner Richard J. Ensor retained the services of Strickland Sports Consulting in December to evaluate the MAAC marketing and sponsorship, including television/media, and the MAAC’s regular season and postseason basketball assets. Following that evaluation, the determination was made to send out a Request for Proposals

“Strickland Sports Consulting assisted the MAAC serving as a consultant to the Council of Presidents as an outside reviewer of the league's marketing operations,” said Ensor. “They provided a detailed analysis of the league’s sponsorship program, sales efforts, collateral materials and personnel. Bill offered suggested options on improving operations that were well received by the staff and membership. Subsequently we retained his services to develop the RFP for marketing services and will utilize his expertise in the selection process.”

Ensor expects the MAAC to make a decision on representation later this month.

James J. Dunn (Most Recently of Wilshire Associates) Named Chief Investment Officer at Wake Forest University

Winston-Salem, N.C. – Wake Forest University President Nathan O. Hatch has appointed James J. Dunn as vice president and chief investment officer. He will assume his new duties July 1.

Dunn will manage the university’s endowment funds and other financial assets from the Reynolda Campus, Wake Forest University Health Sciences and Reynolda House. The chief investment officer works closely with the president, and also with the Trustee Investment Policy Committee.

He will succeed Louis R. Morrell, vice president for investments and treasurer, who will retire June 30. Morrell has served as vice president and treasurer since 1995.

Most recently, Dunn has been a managing director at Wilshire Associates Incorporated and chief investment officer and portfolio manager for Wilshire Funds Management in Santa Monica, Calif. Wilshire Associates is a leading global investment technology, investment consulting and investment management firm. At Wilshire, he has been responsible for providing leadership on asset allocation, investment policy, and investment manager selection for the asset management arm of Wilshire Associates.

Dunn served from 2002-2005 as vice president of alternative investments at InvestorForce Securities and Altvest in Wayne, Pa. From 1995-2002, he served in a number of roles at the Philadelphia Brokerage Corporation. He was an equity trader, vice president for corporate finance, principal, and chief operating officer before he was named president in 2000. He also served as managing director of One Maverick Corporation.

The 3rd annual College Fanz Sports Network Senior Classic football game features 120 former National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) student-athletes competing in a showcase of their talent and character. The game kicks off Saturday, April 25th at 1 p.m. Central Standard Time in Platte County R3 High School’s Pirate Stadium in Platte City, Missouri (suburban Kansas City).

Highlighting the offenses are first team All-American running backs Nick Banks of Minot State University and Greg Fountain of Campbellsville. Fountain led the NAIA in rushing with 1,726 yards total (and 156.9 yards per game), while Banks was second averaging 143.8 yards per game.

Defensively, there are three first team All-Americans participating. Leading the way at linebacker are Nathan Jansen of Northwestern College (Iowa) and Demetrious Washington of the University of Sioux Falls (last season’s NAIA Champions). Robbie Schultz of Benedictine College anchors the defensive line selections.
