Michelle is 26 years old.

Diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in February 2007, Michelle underwent chemotherapy for seven months but relapsed in May 2008. She now needs to find a bone marrow match to save her life. You could be that person.

What you can do to help Michelle or others like her.
The first step in becoming a hero requires a cheek swab and ten minutes of your time. If you are a match, the transplant can often be done entirely through the blood. We need to find a match for Michelle by June 21. The outcome is simple - someone lives because of your donation. You could be the one to save Michelle, or one of thousands of others like her.

We play a lot of great music here at Radio 3, and for one radio station we do play an unbelievable number of different genres, from hip hop to folk; electronica to pop and hard rock. But there is one genre that is sadly under-represented - metal.

But not anymore. Today marks the first Full Metal Podcast for CBC Radio 3. And I couldn't be more um, filled with unholy joy.

For the past few months a crack team of producers and one eager host, have listened to hours of metal tunes from our collection here at New Music Canada. We then sought out the opinions of a few serious metal heads and created this podcast.

You'll hear music from Protest the Hero, Cursed, Bison, and Cryptopsy. I check in with a touring Cam Pipes of 3 Inches of Blood and ponder the why behind Montreal's metal capital of North America status with legendary drummer Flo Mounier of Cryptopsy. [I had the pleasure of meeting Cam last year. Seems like a great guy. -katya]

Free Music Archive from WFMU

Oddio Overplay was one of the very first back in the '90s, and we still somehow seem to be doing very well in popularity ratings. We are, however, humbled in these days where most artists are sharing online. Even WFMU is preparing a version of Oddio Overplay. Several DJs sent word of this project last year to Katya, but she is on the other side of the continent now. Is this an ideal job for Katya Oddio or what? Good luck to all who apply.

Coming soon: an online digital library of music that will allow music fans, webcasters and podcasters to listen, download, and stream for free, with no restrictions, registration or fees. And most amazing of all, it will all be legal.

The Free Music Archive is being directed by WFMU, the most renowned freeform radio station in America, and is funded by a grant from the New York State Music Fund.

We take inspiration for the Free Music Archive from Creative Commons and the open source software movement. Both are based on the idea that there is merit in waiving certain rights to intellectual property. Radio has always offered the public free access to new music. The Free Music Archive is a continuation of that purpose, designed for the age of the internet.

The Free Music Archive will also be a platform for collaboration between established curators of music, including other non-commercial radio stations and music venues. Partners will participate in collective licensing for the archive, and will be given control of web portals that will help them build communities around the music they choose to share. The site will combine the curatorial approach that stations like WFMU have played for the last few decades, and the community generated approach of many current online music sites.

We'll be launching the archive in 2008, but will begin posting sample music and pages and sharing thoughts about music and the industry very soon. Stay tuned.

WFMU a remarkable, unique institution that reminds people why they loved radio in the first place. As we approach the 50th anniversary of our first broadcast (April 24, 1958), we're most excited about the next fifty years, and especially about the next five.

That's why I'm writing to ask you to support WFMU's 50th Anniversary Fundraising Marathon with a tax deductible contribution. A lot hangs in the balance for us this year, including two incredible opportunities which I hope you'll help us fulfill.

First, the FCC, in its divine wisdom has granted WFMU permission to build a booster FM antenna in Manhattan. This could finally give WFMU the coverage that our broadcast license has long promised but which local geography and buildings have always denied us. The booster antenna could greatly improve FM reception in all of New York City, as well as Hudson County. But the booster will cost us over $100,000, and this tantalizing possibility comes at a time when our finances are falling short of covering our present operations.

Our second project for 2008 concerns the growing problem of exorbitant music industry royalties for playing music on the web. To address this issue, we're spending more time getting permission from independent artists and labels for the right to broadcast their material without risking bankruptcy. Later this year, WFMU will launch a new website called the Free Music Archive which will act as an unrestricted online goldmine of music, and also as a licensing collective to combat recent efforts by the record industry to tax webcasters (and eventually broadcasters) dry.

These are both ambitious ideas, but they're also essential to WFMU's long term health. Whether we can carry them out is up to you, and will be decided by the outcome of our 2008 Marathon, our annual fundraising festival that will not only help us realize these opportunities, but also fund the station for another year.

That's why we have a lofty goal for our Golden Anniversary Marathon--raising One Million Dollars (as measured in Australian Dollars, or Aussies).
