Your body mass index should be between 18.5 to 24.9. Weight around the waist is most dangerous.

* Limit red meat to 2.5 ounces a day. An additional 1.7 ounces a day increases cancer risk by 15 percent. That means an 8 ounce steak or a quarter-pound hamburger would be the limit for a week.

* Limit alcohol to two drinks a day for men, one drink a day for women.

* Limit salt intake to 2 grams a day. That's about a teaspoon a day, instead of the teaspoon and a half that most people eat. To give you an idea of how much salt is in food — just one cup of cottage cheese has half the salt you should eat in a day: half a teaspoon. Processed foods are almost always higher in salt.

If meat is now considered that dangerous, why would anyone want to eat something so poisonous?

More Info:
Telegraph - Red meat and alcohol are major cancer causes

ABC News - New Cancer Recommendationsveggiedudehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17675445216840639498noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7184067.post-65908266442326477762007-07-15T20:22:00.000-07:002007-07-15T20:24:34.335-07:00VEGAN CHOCOLATE Discount from CHOCOLATE DECADENCEChocolate Decadence is offering a special 20% discount to SFVS Members through September 30, 2007. Fortunately the dance club is located down a long hall, so the restaurant doesn't suffer. Tea is also a specialty and works its way into many cocktails and in savory dishes such as the richly flavored curries. Chef Tim Luym (a Rising Star chef), who is Chinese and Spanish, grew up in Manila and has a real feel for various cuisines that comprise the interesting menu." The SF Chronicle previously named Poleng Lounge as one of the "Top 10 Restaurants of 2006" (link) and honored Poleng Lounge Chef Tim Luym as Rising Star Chef 2007 (link).

The December 2006 issue of Common Ground Magazine (link) raved over Poleng Lounge’s many vegetarian options, such as The Buddha’s Treasures (“small vegetable-filled dumplings in matcha tea-dusted wrappers . . . delicate and exquisitely seasoned”) and Poleng Curry (“full of vegetables and rich with coconut milk and tea-infused curry”). As noted in the Winter Issue 2007 of Vegetarian News, Poleng Lounge offers Tofu Triangles with rice wine sambal sauce at 25 cents each during its Happy Hour (4PM-6PM). Poleng Lounge also offers SFVS members a 10% discount during 6PM-8PM.SFVS Discount Coordinatorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07449007025009321444noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7184067.post-1175106953091296752007-03-28T12:35:00.000-07:002007-03-28T12:40:32.286-07:00Low Sperm Count Linked to Beef
Consumption of beef by women during pregnancy may alter a male's in utero testicular development and compromise his future reproductive capacity, researchers here reported.

The reason could be residual anabolic steroids in the meat, Shanna Swan, Ph.D., of the University of Rochester (N.Y.), and colleagues, reported online in the March 28 issue of Human Reproduction.

In a study of 387 fertile partners of pregnant women, men whose mothers reported eating more than seven beef meals a week while pregnant, had a sperm concentration more than 24% lower than that of men whose mothers ate less beef, they found.

In addition, three times more sons of high-beef consumers had a sperm concentration that would be classified as subfertile according to World Health Organization standards, compared with men whose mothers ate less beef, said Dr. Swan and colleagues.
MedPage Today - Eating Beef in Pregnancy Linked to Reduced Sperm in Adult Sonsveggiedudehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17675445216840639498noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7184067.post-1174960719221427552007-03-26T19:50:00.000-07:002008-06-29T21:35:57.712-07:00SFVS Members DiscountsThe SFVS Discount page is constantly being updated. Now he can say 'Vegetarians are Smarter'.

A scientific study by a Southampton University team in the British Medical Journal reports that the average vegetarian tend to have five IQ points more than the average person.

However, the report seems to indicate it isn't the exclusion of meat that makes one smarter because "there was no difference in IQ score between strict vegetarians and those who said they were vegetarian but who reported eating fish or chicken."

In other words, there are really two groups here. The vegetarians, and the ones who perceive themselves to be vegetarian.

This may suggest that intelligent people tend to eat healthier and because of this they are more likely to gravitate towards a vegetarian diet. And because Brits tend to become vegetarian more out of ethics than for health reasons (the exact polar opposite to their American counterparts in my estimation), maybe there is a correlation between intelligence and empathy. I guess we'll have to wait for that study.

BBC - High IQ link to being vegetarianveggiedudehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17675445216840639498noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7184067.post-1165949535302454082006-12-12T10:51:00.000-08:002006-12-12T10:52:15.320-08:00Save the cow, save the worldNo superpowers required; just go Vegetarian
A United Nations report is now saying what I've been saying all along: meat eating hurts the planet more than anything else.
A United Nations report has identified the world's rapidly growing herds of cattle as the greatest threat to the climate, forests and wildlife. And they are blamed for a host of other environmental crimes, from acid rain to the introduction of alien species, from producing deserts to creating dead zones in the oceans, from poisoning rivers and drinking water to destroying coral reefs.

The 400-page report by the Food and Agricultural Organisation, entitled Livestock's Long Shadow, also surveys the damage done by sheep, chickens, pigs and goats. But in almost every case, the world's 1.5 billion cattle are most to blame. Livestock are responsible for 18 per cent of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming, more than cars, planes and all other forms of transport put together...
The Independent - Cow 'emissions' more damaging to planet than CO2 from carsveggiedudehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17675445216840639498noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7184067.post-1159219335330972812006-09-25T14:17:00.000-07:002006-09-25T14:23:58.260-07:00Happy Heart Book ClubThis message is from Sam Halsey, for all San Francisco Bay Area residence and beyond:

Hello Happy Vegans:-)

I'm starting a new VEGAN book club “Happy Heart Book Club”.
Thinking we could start by reading John Robbins new book.

Please check out the link.
Please let me know what you think.
Please feel free to share this stuff with your friends.

Happy Heart Book Club

Peace,

samveggiedudehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17675445216840639498noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7184067.post-1156395024672142642006-08-23T21:48:00.000-07:002006-08-24T06:30:52.560-07:00Free Video Night (Red Victorian Peace Café) Aug 25“New Research on Vegan Diet & Health” by Dr. Neal Barnard, MD

Date: Friday, August 25, 2006
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Place: Red Victorian Peace Café
1665 Haight Street, near Ashbury, San Francisco

For more information, call 415-273-5481.
