Customer Review: Thule works
Just got back from a 1600 mile road trip with 5 bikes in the rack hanging out the hitch of my wife's XC90. My bike is the only one of the five that fit perfect, two of the bikes were my wife's and my daughter's and two were my sons' all of which did not have a cross bar to sit over the rack's two bars in a "pretty" manner. With some patience and wiggling all five bikes fit and were strapped snug over the rack. It held really well even through the hills and mountains of northern Georgia. The bikes come off easily and we were able to unload. The only problem is that if the rack is fully loaded with five bikes you better have a good reason to get into the back of your SUV because it takes three people to gently let the rack down and to put it back up.
Customer Review: 5 BIKES ON 1 RACK???
Our 3 daughters are now riding bikes. I went to the local REI store to check out this 5 bike rack. Fortunately one was on display so I asked a gentleman at REI if I could experiment by loading 2 adult and 3 childrens (girl) bikes. He explained that we had to use an adaptor bar for the womens bikes. After fumbling to get those on for about 10 minutes we attempted to load the bikes on the rack. A manager came by and was concerned that we were getting pedals caught up in spokes. There is not enough space for all those handle bars. He said that a Thule rep was coming by in the next few days and he planned to ask about this. I would like to hear from those of you who have had success with this configration. Customer Review: Inadequate as shipped
If you own a hitch-haul, the bike rack accessory allows you to skip a stand-alone rack and kill two birds with one product. Another advantage is it accepts all bikes equally well, regardless of frame configuration, unlike some "hanging" racks. However, be aware that the rack is NOT SAFE as shipped. The rack openings are too wide to grip firmly any bike's wheels (esp. true of narrow street tires) and the single, light-duty tie-down provided is wholly inadequate to stabilize one, let alone three, bikes. Here's what you need to do: buy two more decent strength tie-downs (I have ones with ratchets to make tightening easier) and use them to pull the bikes' frames (or seatposts, etc.) tightly toward the right and left of the hitch-haul. (Plenty of holes provided for this purpose.) This prevents to-and-fro motion of the bikes. Then use the provided light-duty tie-down to attach the bikes firmly to your reciever, bumper, etc. to prevent them from toppling backward on acceleration. Also carefully pad contact points between bikes and tie-downs, bikes themselves, and/or bike-vehicle to prevent paint damage. If you do all this--but only if you do all this--you've got a serviceable and safe product. Believe me, if you follow manufacturer's instructions and "secure" your bikes using only their tie down, they'll list badly after a few blocks! Who knows what will happen at highway speeds.... Customer Review: Adequate
This rack got my two, fairly heavy mountain bikes through a 900 mile road trip without breaking. I was a little concerned; it doesn't look all that sturdy, but it managed. It said it works with Jeep Wranglers, which it does, but it's a bit of a squeeze around the third brake light. Product is galvanized on the outside, but not on the inside. The first time it got rained on, rusty water drained from the tubing. It did the job though, and was a reasonable price.
Customer Review: Be careful to not buy older version
I just purchased the SR1, as advertised here on Amazon and on Hollywoodracks.com. However, it is NOT the one in the photos on either site. The one in the photos has, I discovered, support arms that are new for 2007. Their part number is SR1-SA2 and they have the cradle and rubber straps to set the bike frame in. The prior support arms simply have a dip in the arm where you set the frame, so you have to figure out some other way to keep the bike from bouncing off the support arms. That part number is SR1-SA.

Apparently Hollywood Racks did not think to distinguish the new from the old model because they are both SR1. So, be careful what you buy because I'm not sure there is a way to tell which you are getting unless you open the box, since the model number is the same for both. (Looks like a convenient "mistake" that allows Hollywood to unload older merchandise on consumers!)

I would NOT recommend this bike rack - awkward, flimsy and worst of all, it really isn't safe. I think it's ok for one bike, which is what I use it for most of the time, but I used it for two this weekend, and one of the bikes came off while I was driving down the interstate. There is nothing more terrifying than seeing your bike bounce down the highway!! We ended up tying the bike with some extra rope for the rest of the trip so it didn't happen again. Don't risk it!
