Um deles falou sobre perder 20 quilos em cinco meses, sobrevivendo com uma caneca diária de sopa e um pedaço de pão que tinha gosto de serragem. O outro se lembra de rastejar sob o arame farpado para comer com os camponeses e lembrou de uma mulher que deu tomates frescos a ele.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;Eles eram dois prisioneiros de guerra - um americano, que ficou aprisionado ao sul de Dresden, e um alemão, que permaneceu preso em Camp Algona, que fica a aproximadamente 320 quilômetros daqui, onde o soldado americano serviu como guarda após sua libertação. Depois, eles trocaram histórias e experiências e - muito tempo depois - apertaram as mãos.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;"Por que eu deveria ver os americanos como meus inimigos agora?" perguntou o alemão, Kurt Butzlaff, durante o encontro em uma biblioteca pública aqui, na tarde de quinta-feira. "As pessoas nunca foram minhas inimigas, mas os dois sistemas estavam em guerra, ele com seu comandante e eu com meu comandante".  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;Butzlaff, 82 anos, foi um dos 425,000 prisioneiros de guerra, em sua maior parte alemães, mantidos em campos nos EUA, e aproximadamente 20,000 ficaram em Iowa. Ele está visitando o estado nesta semana, com outros alemães, filhos e netos de prisioneiros, como parte de um projeto de um historiador local para transcender culturas e curar velhas feridas.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;Nem todos abraçaram os visitantes. Veteranos em Charles City pediram ao Traces, um grupo beneficente, para cancelar uma visita, e vários ex-prisioneiros compareceram à biblioteca nesta quinta-feira para protestar.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;"Eu quero conversar com alguns daqueles krauts (alemães), fazer algumas perguntas a eles", afirmou William Mehegan, 81 anos, que passou aproximadamente um ano em um campo de prisioneiros próximo ao Mar Báltico, e usava o quepe de veteranos da 8ª Força Aérea. "Eu vou perguntar quantos de seus rapazes foram mortos quando estavam em campos americanos de prisioneiros. O que eles tinham para comer? Que tipo de roupas eles usavam?".  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;Butzlaff afirmou que era um jovem soldado e nada sabia dos campos de concentração, e se aborreceu ao ver sua foto na capa da edição de quinta-feira do Des Moines Register, com a manchete: "Prisioneiro nazista volta para viagem histórica". &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;"Isso não está certo", ele afirmou. Ao saberem que as  tropas americanas se aproximam, os soldados de Wehrmacht fogem, mas os meninos,  cheios do entusiasmo nazi-ideológico de "sangue e honra " ficam para defender a  ponte. Nesse cenário da decadente Alemanha nazista, bastam 105 minutos para  Wicki apresentar-nos a guerra por inteiro; o nascimento, a auto-sufocação ao  fanatismo nacionalista e, por fim, a transformação do ardor inocente em perda de  moralidade. De repente as razões para a guerra parecem claras. Trata-se de  um grupo de garotos que são amigos em um pequeno vilarejo. Eles todos sabem que  serão chamados ao alistamento, onde mostram-se divididos entre o patriotismo e o  medo de lutar. São mandados para defenderem uma pequena ponte do seu vilarejo.  Porém, não têm idéia do que ocorre com o exército alemão em 1945.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;O  filme é lindo, mas ao mesmo tempo, triste.
