So you wanna make a movie

Last year we received 55 entries for the 2008 Film Tour. That was a lot of footage to have to sort through and to be honest some of them were just plane torturous to watch. It generally takes less than 30 seconds to get our attention or to loose it.

So to try and help get your flick up to standard we have outlined a few tips that will keep you in the running.

1. Get a tripod, monopod or some kind of image stabilization....PLEASE!
Stabilize your frames! Nothing will eliminate your entry faster than a wobbly film. If it is hard to focus or makes you queezy watching your film on a 3 inch internet video player multiply that by ten thousand when you see it on a 16x20 projector screen in a theater.

2. Don't hold your shots for too long. Standing in the same place for 5 minutes or longer while you film your buddy play a fish gets old fast.

3. Take advantage of your environment.
Pay attention to what's going on and then environment around you. Get some vantage points, find a good angle. Look at what else is taking place around you. There is more to making a fishing flick than just the fish.

4. Get the creative juices flowing.
Chances are your submission will be weak if you are submitting a film that is something you just throw together because you decided to take the video camera along with your one day. Do some research and advance planning.

5. Get an outsiders perspective.
Screen your film to your friends, family co workers before you submit your film, and then get one of of their friends that you don't know to take a look at it and give you an honest opinion. No matter how shitty it is your grandma, parents or girlfriend will tell you its the best film ever. You need constructive honest critiques.

6. Music is key.
Your audio track is very important. We don't care or judge on what genre of music you lay down on your film, rock, country, blues, reggae, anything. Nothing is worse that watching a film where all you hear is dead air or the wind blowing out your microphone.
Keep in mind that you are responsible to have the legal permissions to the music rights you use.

Music is often one of the hardest pieces in putting your film together. There are many music resources that are available to help you score your flick. Independent bands are always looking for ways to get their music out there and in people's ears. If you have a friend who is a musician talk to them! Buy them some beer take em out for a burger or give them a baggie of guitar picks. After all they are musicians and probably just as broke as most fly fishermen. Just be sure that you give them a shout out and an end credit on your film.

2009 Fly Fishing Film Tour Call For Entries!

We are now taking entries for the 2009 Fly Fishing Film Tour. All entries must be submitted no later than Friday December 5th, 2008.
Winners will be announced Friday January 2nd, 2009.

The Fly Fishing Film tour is the largest film tour of its kind and is open to all film makers.
Selected films will screen in front of thousands of people in dozens of cities across the world.

Program that documents a fly fishing expedition to any part of the world

CONSERVATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL/DOCUMENTARY
Program that features or emphasizes environmental or conservation issues/topics which directly impact wild fish species and their habitat

HUMAN-WILDLIFE INTERACTIONS
Program that emphasizes social, cultural, economic, or spiritual aspects of people and their relationship with Fly Fishing

SPECIES
Program made with an emphasis on a particular species of fish (Salt or Fresh). Not necessarily an environmental or conservation program.

This years film tour will be adding prizes for Best Film.

The winning film will be selected by an independent panel of fly fishing enthusiast.
There will also be a Peoples Choice award. Voting will take place on www.tv.aegmedia.com

Catching up...

So we are about 1/3 through the tour and it is time to do some catching up on how the tour has been rolling so far.

To date we have logged over 6,000 road miles behind the wheel before we had to turn in the Volvo. Talk about an inspiration for higher education. Most of us here are used to driving vehicles that have over 200,000 miles on them and are held together with duct tape and monofilament. The XC90 without a doubt kept our ass cheeks comfy on the long hauls and I can tell you first hand that 110 mph feels like 60 in that ride. So the Volvo is gone and it’s back to the old Montero. You will be missed. Big props to the crew at the Drake Magazine for giving us the hook up on the vehicle.

The shows and the crowds have been awesome this year. We have had record breaking attendance at every show.

Spokane still holds the record for the biggest crowd with nearly 700. The close contenders have been Bozeman Missoula Bend, 2 nights and Denver, 2 nights all with close to 600 people showing up at the doors. Ventura Anchorage Grand Rapids and Salt Lake City all had over 300 people turn out.

One of the biggest highlights for us so far on the trip was meeting up for lunch with the original Trout Bum John Gierach in Lyons Colorado. This guy is most definitely one of the coolest cats on the planet not to mention a mentor and inspiration.

As most of you know this years show has a little different flavor than last year as we are trying to generate awareness regarding the proposed Pebble Mine in Bristol Bay Alaska. We have 2 features we are touring with this year specifically focusing on the Pebble Mine issue Equilibrium by Cast Away Productions and River Poets by Fly on the Wall Travels as well as the trailer for the up coming release by Felt Soul Media Red Gold. To date we have collected over 1500 names on the petition we have been carrying on behalf of the Sportsman’s Alliance for Alaska, TU and FFF opposing the Pebble Mine. Our efforts have not been met without some resistance as I had some guy want to duke it out with me at the Spokane show over the pebble mine issue. I wish we would have had the camera rolling on this guy. After calling me every 4 letter word in the dictionary and getting right up in my grill claiming the film tour is nothing but a political agenda he ended with calling me a fucking socialist. The kicker is we heard that he was an outdoor editor for an un named news paper in the Idaho panhandle region and he has ties to the mining industry. The guy needs to change either his profession or his hobby. Classic.

This week we headed out to the east cost kicking off in Philly and then doing a free event for the troops at the Walter Reed Hospital. The tour will continue in the east through March 19^th.

We have added some new shows and will continue to add more shows through May. Keep up to date on the update the tour schedule, new shows, and buy your advance tickets on the web site. We will be doing it St Patty’s day style at Club Ultra in NCY on the 17^th. We are still working on the cage dancers but what better way to party in the big city at Club Ultra with the film tour. It is sure to be a night to remember or not remember depending on how much you decide to drink. This week we added a new film to the line up. A new salt water piece by Captain Will Benson is now on the list with some of the sickest Tarpon and Permit action caught on film. We also added and extended teaser from Roll Cast Productions for their up coming yet to be titled film that features extended salmon shark footage that will blow your mind!

Well we have a lot of catching up to do on the film tour blog which will be coming soon!
The show last night in Denver was awesome. The Oriental theater is a great venue with a small deli and beer and spirits on tap for an added bonus.

Last nights show played to a packed out house. The energy was killer. We love doing shows Colorado and the Denver crowd was amped.

We were honored to have Travis Rummel from Felt Soul Media join us on the stage to speak about their upcoming release of Red Gold.

One more show tonight in Denver then its back on the road again and on to Salt Lake City for the next show on March 3^rd at the Tower Theater.

Film Tour kicks off in Ventura to a SOLD OUT crowd!

The film tour officially kicked off at the Patagonia world head quarters on Wednesday January 30th!
The film tour is now in full swing. The kick off in Ventura at Patagonia was a huge success.
A big Thank You to Patagonia for hosting the event.

Film makers Travis Rummel from Felt Soul Media, RA Beattie from Beattie Outdoor Productions, Tom Bie from the Drake Magizine, Andrew Eddie from Double Haul Productions and Brian Bennett from the Moldy Chum all attended the event and it was great to have them there with us.
We are off to a great start and we cant wait to continue on with the tour.
It's great to be back on the road again and we are looking forward to the rest of the stops along the way.
San Francisco Santa Cruz Sacramento and Healdsburg are next on the hit list.

We could say that you guys are just getting to much rain down there for us, but that's not the case.
Due to a scheduling conflict with other fly fishing related events we have decided to reschedule the show to a later date this spring. We would hate to have people miss the opportunity to come out to the show due to other obligations.
