Using free yahoo mail in outlook express or other email software

In one of my previous post, I had explained on how to configure free Gmail with your outlook express. But I never thought that free yahoo mail can also be used with outlook express. This cool tip is explained very well by Heinz Tschabitscher, an author at about.com.

Anyway, configuring yahoo mail in outlook express, is not exactly as direct as Gmail. We need to use some tools such as IzyMail and YPOPs.

I think there is no point for me to elaborate on the step by step here, as Heinz Tschabitscher had even provided a step by step screenshot walkthrough on how to use yahoo mail in outlook express by Ypop.

I really want to shake this guy`s hand if I am ever able to see him.

Japanese language online dictionary

I studied in Japan in 1994 up to 1998. When I was there, I met lots of foreign students from all over the world. There must be lots of people who is capable to communicate in Japanese like me. But as Japanese language is not our mother tongue, we surely need to refer to a dictionary sometime. Looking up a conventional dictionary will be quite troublesome. There are lots of online dictionary nowadays, but it is too simple to be used.

I found an online Japanese dictionary, established by Jim Breen from Monash University. It is good for advance user. (People who actually knows Japanese language). It`s not like those translation tools provided by google or yahoo.

Some of the features are such as :

ability to find words translation from both english and Japanese

you can type your Japanese word in romaji

you can find kanji if you know it`s radical count, just like using the conventional dictionary

you can also see examples on how certain word is being used

and a lot more that I had never tried yet

All these while, I had been talking about softwares, gadgets and internet tips. But do you know that we can generate income by a computer connected to the internet ? No, I`m not saying about big big giant companies which are using internet as their advertisement medium, I`m talking about how ordinary people like you and me can generate income from the internet. We`ll lots of people had probably knew about this, but since I had just recently heard about it, then there are probably other people who still had never heard about it. So read on.

My first encounter on how to generate income through internet was when one day, I read an advertisement which sounded something like this - Learn how to generate income with free blogs by google adsense. Working from home and generating income through internet had been my dream from long ago, so I bought the e-book guidance, and started my adsense effort. But as I started my journey, it seems there are a lot more that I need to learn. Not only that, there are a lot more things that I need to spend, in order to make my adsense effort works !

Of course I had not give up on the adsense, but I started to search for something which is more simpler. While browsing through the internet, I stumble upon something call Pay Per Post or abbreviated as PPP. The concept is, you write a post on your blog, about something featured in the PPP, and if your blog post is accepted, you will get paid. We`ll this seems more simpler. I had been writing and reviewing products, softwares, cool websites. And if I can be paid for that, why not ? I can also use those incomes, to fund my efforts on my adsense. I can buy more guidance e-book, or I can purchase softwares that can help me to improve my SEO, such as Nichebot, wordtracker and many others.

But the key here is to be honest. Be sure to read the blog ethics. We should only make a post on a product or service which we believe in. Our posting will influence lots of people, and we surely do not want our post to mislead people right ? There will never be a way through life with dishonesty !

To my fellow bloggers friends, check this thing out. Even if you don`t make lots of money, although there are actually people who make a fortune out of it, at least may be it can cover your hosting cost.

FREE MIND - Freeware for digital mind mapping

Mind map is a tool that I use largely in my work.
It helps me to clarify my thinking and convey ideas to my colleagues.
Looking carefully, there are lots of industrial tools, which are based on mind map.
Ishikawa diagram, ask yourself 5 times why are all tools which have mind map concept in it.

I had been wondering whether there is any software that can enable mind map to be used on the computer. I finally found one. The best thing is, it is a free software.
It needs to be a free software, as I don’t think I can sell the idea of buying a software for mind mapping to my boss.
This freeware is an open source software from sourceforge.net, which is called free mind. It is a Java written software, and saying that you must have a java application installed to run it.

For me, this freeware is very helpful. I use it for brainstorming with my team, or I use it to convey my concepts to my boss. Previously, I do mind map on a white board, and editing was not very convenient. By this freeware, changing nodes had been very easy. There are also lots of icons to be used, and you can leave notes or remarks at the bottom of the page for any nodes you choose.

For those who uses mind mapping a lot, I hope that this freeware will help your works.

Oh yes, for your info, I had scanned this freeware by windows defender.
It is free from spywares. Just to be safe as, it is known that some freewares might have spywares bundled with it.

I started to learn about something called open source software recently, and here is an article by : James Brown which explains on it. I found this article in Artice City.com

Using your Gmail as mirror hardisk

Do you know you can use your Gmail memory as a mirror hardisk.
Once the setup is completed, you will see a Gmail drive in your My computer. You can drag your files in the folder, and you can actually create new folders as well.

I learn this tip from Vinu123 at ehow.com.
As long you have your computer, and able to connect to the internet, you will be able to access your Gmail drive. I check the properties of my Gmail drive, it shows an allocation of 6.6GB ! Now, that is quite something.

Here is how to do it :

Get your Gmail drive shell extension here, and choose your download site.

Once completed, open the zip file and run setup.exe and follow the instruction on the screen

When the installation is completed, go to your My Computer and you should be able to see your Gmail drive now.

Double click the file, and log in with your Gmail account no.

Now you can start to drag and drop your files

One word of caution, each time you drop a file, an email will be send to your Gmail.
From my experience, if you delete the email, your file will also be deleted. So, do not delete that email. What I usually do is, to label those emails as My backup files, so that it will be easy to sort my Gmail inbox.

The posts are categorized so that it will be easy for us to find. Boy, how I would like to learn creating expandable categories like that.

Personally, I will suggest Firefox. I had been using firefox and found it is indeed a browser with cool safety features.

How to improve your computer speed?

Do you ever feel that your computer speed is not as fast as it used to be. I do. Upon some research, I had started to understand what is happening.

Basically, there are some reasons on why the speed of a computer drop in comparison to the time when it was first manufactured.
a) Difficulty to find data due to clutters.
b) Resistance in accessing data
c) Insufficient memory
d) Too much background activity, especially spy ware

There are some essential maintenance items that we should do to optimize our computer speed such as below :
- Performing disk clean up
- Performing disk defragmentation
- Performing scan disk or disk error checking
- Performing registry cleaning
- Installing windows defender to protect from spyware.

How to perform disk cleanup ?

Disk cleanup will remove unnecessary file from our computer, and give us more space.
When combined with disk defragmentation and scan disk, it can help to improve our computer operation speed.

To perform disk cleanup :
a) Go to My Computer
b) Right click your hardisk and choose properties
c) Click on disk clean up tab
d) Then you can choose the files that you want to remove
e) I usually remove all files EXCEPT Office setup files.
f) Then click OK.
g) You can also go to [More option] tab at step d), to remove unnecessary windows component and installed programs.

How to perform disk defragmentation ?

File defragmentation will organize data in our hardisk, so that it will be able to be access easier and faster. It is equivalent to re-organizing scattered books on a shelve according to its category. When data is easier to be find, our computer will naturally, work faster.

To perform file defragmentation :
a) Go to My computer
b) Right click your hardisk and choose properties
c) Click Tools tab.
d) Choose defragment now
e) Then click on defragment tab.

How to perform scandisk

Scandisk or error checking will check disk for file system errors, and detect disk bad sectors. By identifying bad sectors, your computer will avoid to search data from those areas, hence resulted in faster computer operation.

a) Go to My computer
b) Right click your hardisk and choose properties
c) Click Tools tab.
d) Choose [Check Now] at error checking area.

Sometimes, scandisk needs to be re-scheduled in the next windows startup.
If this is chosen, when you started windows the next time, it will conduct a scandisk first, before going to your windows.

Send free SMS from PC by Yahoo Messenger

I was on outstation yesterday. I was in a situation that I was not able to make any phone call (because I had not enable roaming function of my mobile phone), but I had an internet access. There was some very important message that I would like to convey to my wife, so I use yahoo messenger to an SMS.

Bookmark synhcronizing by Foxmark

When we browse the internet in the office, and we found any cool site, usually what we do are, we add the site to our favorite list. If you are using firefox browser, we don`t use the term favorite list, but rather we "bookmark" it.

But let say, then we return home and use our computer at home to browse the internet, what happen is, the cool sites that we "bookmarked" just now, was left at the computer in our office. Wouldn`t it be nice, if we are able to synchronize our favorite bookmark in all the computer that we use ?

Well, one method is, if you are using Internet explorer, you can save your favorite list to a USB drive, then again import it on the other computer you are using. (Please refer to my previous post). But by this way, you will always have to carry your USB drive everywhere.

The good news is, there is actually a solution to this. If you are using firefox browser (like me), there is an add on features which enable you to synchronize bookmarks in all your computers. Let it be the terminal at your office, your home desktop, or even your laptop.

So here`s the step to step guide :
a) Get firefox browser if you haven`t done so (Hey it`s free)
b) Click on [Bookmarks] --> then choose [Get bookmark add ons]
c) Find the [ Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer]
d) Then click [Add to firefox]
e) If this is the first time you download, you will need to create a username & password.
g) Once completed, you can synchronize your bookmark with the server.
h) When you get back home, you will need to add Foxmark to your home computer as well.
i) This time, do not create a new username, but rather use the username you created with the first computer.
j) Upon completion, you can get the bookmark synchronized with the one you had earlier uploaded to the server.
k) If you need to synchronize with any other of your computer, you only need to start again from step h).
l) At any time, if you want to conduct synchronization of your bookmark, just go to Tools --> Foxmarks --> Synchronize now.

Email - Using auto response

Auto response is used to notify people who send emails to you, that you are not able to check email within some period of time.
Once you set the time frame and leave your message, email provider will automatically send an email with your message to all people who send emails to you within that period of time.

Different email provider will have different ways of setting it, but if you use Yahoo Mail, then you may follow the steps below :

a) Log in to your Yahoo Mail and go to option
b) Choose Mail Option
c) Choose Vacation response
d) Set your time range and your message
e) Save changes and everything is done

CONFIGURE GMAIL TO BE USE IN MICROSOFT OUTLOOK

Do you know that you can use your Gmail by outlook express or Microsoft outlook?
Quite embarrassed to admit, but I had only discovered that Gmail can be configured in Microsoft outlook, even though I had been using it for a couple of years.

Usually I prefer to use Gmail in Internet browser, so that I can access my email by any computer, but it is a little inconvenient when you want to find something in one of your emails, but you are in a place where Internet is not accessible. In this situation, having your Gmail configured in Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express is really helpful.

Here are the steps :
Step 1 – Configure your Gmail settings
a) Log in your Gmail and go to settings
b) Choose Forwading and POP/IMAP
c) Choose enable POP
d) Click “save changes”

Step 2 – Configure your Microsoft outlook / Outlook express
a) In Microsoft outlook, click Tools à Account settings
b) Choose to add New
c) Fill in your name as you want it to appear and click next
d) Set your email address – yourusername@gmail.com and click next
e) Choose POP3 as your incoming email server type
f) Your incoming server will be – pop.gmail.com
g) Your outgoing server will be – smtp.gmail.com then click next
h) Your account name will be – yourusername@gmail.com
i) Fill in your Gmail password and click next.
j) Choose your internet connection type and click next
k) Click next and finish.

Step 3 – Additional steps if you are using Microsoft Outlook or Outlook 7
a) Click Tools then Account Setting
b) Choose your Gmail account and click Properties
c) Click the More Settings... button, and select the Outgoing Server tab
d) Check the box next to My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication and select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
e) Click the Advanced tab, and check the box next to This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) under Incoming Server (POP3).
f) In the Outgoing server (SMTP) box, enter 587, and select TLS from the drop-down menu next to Use the following type of encrypted connection

g) Click OK

How to send email with large attachement size ?

In my office, we usually face one problem. That is sending emails with large attachment file.
Some servers might have a limit on what an incoming size can be. If the size is larger than the permitted limit, our email will not be able to go through.

Finally, there is a solution to this. And the best thing is, it`s free.

There is a website which is called www.sendthisfile.com
What we need to do is register and account, and we can start sending large file.

How does this tip works ?
When we send a file to www.sendthisfile.com, it will place your file in a server, and notify your recipient.
Your recipient then, can download the file from the source.
So, there will be no worries that the email size is over quota or not.

Only that if your connection speed is not fast enough, and if the file size is too big, you will have to wait quite a long time to upload / download the file.

Anyway, it`s better than totally unable to send the file right ?
I actually tested sending an email with attachment file with 18MB size, and it works quite well.

Registry maintenance - Remove clutters from your computer

In order to test whether some software is meeting my expectation or not, I usually download the software and actually try it out. I downloaded quite a number of software, and if it is not meeting what I searched for, I will uninstall it from my computer.

But as I browse through my computer, sometimes I feel quite uncomfortable, when I observed some components of the uninstall software still remain in my computer.

As I searched the Internet, I found out that, as we use the computer, especially when we download software, information will be recorded in the computer`s registry.
As time goes, unnecessary registry data accumulated and gets cluttered.

The consequences of cluttered registry are such as :
· PC runs much slower than when you first bought it
· PC crashes for no apparent reason
· You keep receiving error messages and don't know why

To avoid this, we need to conduct periodic maintenance on our registry. There are lots of registries cleaner in the market.
Recently, I purchased registry cleaner which is called “RegCure”. It is combined with another software “Pareto Logic” which helps to enhance privacy control.
However, I think it is not fair for me to review RegCure, as I had never use any other different Registry Cleaner, and have no baseline to compare with.

How to format nokia 6600

Here to let everybody how to perform a
Full phone formatting on a 6600!

If you encounter situation like below on your 6600,
1. Blank screen phone unable to reboot.
2. Phone only able to boot-up to "Nokia" word screen.
3. Install some program but not able to uninstall it after that.
4. Unable to delete unwanted files on C drive.

Do a Full phone formatting on your 6600! as steps below,

1. Make sure you have at least 3/4 charge of battery power left.

2. Backup your contacts list and personal files to MMC memory card.

3. Switch-off your 6600 phone.

4. Press and hold 3 keys; Green dial key, * Star key, no. 3 key on keypad and then press the power on/off to swtich on the 6600 phone.

Remember, do not let go the 3 press and hold keys until you see a formatting word screen show!

5. After a few minutes when the Full phone formatting completed, your 6600 will back to original system and factory settting.

Tips on sending email without displaying the email address

This tip might not be something special for people who use internet & email frequently, but for people like me, it had been a wonder for quite some time.
Since, I myself is not aware on this tips for quite some time, there are probably other people who is still not aware of it.
So I decide to share it here.

In my company, I work with many peoples, and in many case some of my customers are competitors to the others.
There are times, I would like to send emails to all of them, but considering their situation as competitors, how can I send email to all of them at once, without displaying the email addresses.

Here`s the tip :
In any email, there will a Bcc tab, which means "Blind carbon copy".
If your address is placed here, your email will be sent to the recipients, but they will not be able to see the other addresses.

However, one note of caution, if you are using yahoo mail, you cannot send email with all addressed in the bcc column. There must be at least one address in the To column.
The trick that I usually use is, by placing my other alternative address at To column, and place other addresses at the Bcc column. Please see image below for better understanding.

How to make back up of Internet Explorer favorites ?

Anyone who had been using a computer for a considerably long time, will agree that, a computer is only a machine, and at one time might malfunction and needs to be re-formatted.

As I am aware of this, I usually back up all documents in My document folder, and also export my emails to external recording device. Since the size of files & folders are not that big, usually my thumb drive is sufficient to store all the data.

However, I always face a problem that I will lost my favorites items in my internet explorer, and have to fill in back one by one. Not only it is time consuming, but I face difficulties because I don`t usually write down the URL`s of my favorite sites.

The good news is, Internet explorer`s favorite item can be exported and saved.
Not only you can recover you favorite items in the event that you computer needs to be re-formatted, you can even save it to external device, such as a thumb drive, so that you can bring it with you when you are using internet explorer on other computers.

Today, I`m going to share on how to save favorite items from internet explorer by saving it to hardisk or other recording devices. But it you use google toolbar, there is a way to save it to the web. But I`ll cover this some other time.

How to make back up of your Internet Explorer Favorite items ?
For your info, I`m using IE 7. Not sure it it differs in other IE version.

Step 1 : Go to File
Step 2 : Choose import or export
Step 3 : The import and export will appear (Click next)
Step 4 : Choose Favorite export and click next
Step 5 : Your favorite folder will be displayed (Click next)
Step 6 : Specify where do you want to save the folder and click next
Step 7 : Click finish

Your back up of favorite folder will be saved in html file.

I had never tried to import it back yet, but if I try, I`ll make sure that I share it with you.

How to watch downloaded youtube videos ?

Downloaded youtube videos are usually saved in avi format.
In most cases, these avi files will not be able to be played by Windows Media Player.
Even if it can, sometimes only audio can be heard without the image.

This problem is seems to be due to unavailability of required codec.
Some experts may be able to find the codec, but a person who is not familiar with computer like me prefers an easier solution. Download and install DivX player.

You can download DivX player at http://www.divx.com/
You can choose to download the free version or purchase the Pro version.
What you need to do is only to click the Free download tab, and follow the instruction step by step.

How to download youtube videos

In my office, there are more than 10 engineers. Our off duty activities are including watching youtube videos. Especially during the recent election seasons, where lots of political videos pop up in you tube.

But one question remains, can we download youtube files ? Non of the engineers in our team are able to find the solution.

It`s quite funny that nobody can answer the question, when the only thing you need to do is type [ how to download youtube ] in any major search engine and press enter. Then walla... the answer is all there.

Anyway for those who still don`t know the method, here it goes :

- Get in youtube and click the video you want to download.
- Copy the URL of the video you want to download.
- Go to this site http://vixy.net/ or alternatively you can go to http://www.downloadyoutubevideos.com/
- Paste the URL as shown in figure below, and press start.

Once the conversion is completed, then click download the file to your computer.

But one message of caution, I see that most file downloaded by this method is in avi format. And this kind of format is usually unable to be played by Windows Media Player due to inavailibility of codec.

The easiest way to solve this is to download DivX player. It`s free, but I think I`ll cover that in another post.

Hi,

I`ve been touching a computer keyboard since I was 13 years old, when I joined my computer club at school. I was learning BASIC programming at that time. Computer programming was one of my favorite subject. In fact, while I was taking my degree course, I can sit whole day long doing my C language programming assignments. I knew the internet at the time, but as an engineering student, other than email, I use computer mainly for non internet purpose.

For your info, I am now 34 years old. So many years had passed by, but not until recently, the thing that I had been doing with my computer are compiling my reports in microsoft documents, emailing, and some internet surfing to find information with relates to my office works.

Recently, I started to explore more on the internet, and oh boy, how much wonder there are now in the internet.

I had started to learn watching video in youtube, even downloading youtube videos to your computer, start blogging, sending e-articles, play online games, gettting involve in MyBlogLog, Digg, joining online forums and even trying to earn income online by Google adsense.

The development of internet is really an amazing thing. I decided to start another blog and share whatever new findings that I find in the internet.
