Project Honeypot is now tracking comment spammers and (here's the really interesting part) offers a IP-based RBL that can be used to fight link spam. Simply check your visitors' IP addresses against the http:BL and send away any matching addresses.

The chongqed.org database currently lists 2101 splogs on blogspot.com. I hacked a little perl script that would query them all to see which ones now return a 404 (which unfortunately does not mean that they are no longer spamvertized). 

Here are the results: 1082 of those 2101 splogs no longer exist.

Although the rate of new spamvertized .edu domains has somewhat slowed down, we are still seeing new spam. Much, if not all, of it is sent through botnets, but the spamming characteristics differ a bit:

we are currently seeing a flood of wiki spam where the links all point to
.edu domains.

It seems to me like the spammer was specifically looking for a certain message
board software that is very popular in the .edu world. He then posted spammy

All you have to do to find a certified list of splogs, is to use Google Blog Search and search for the term chongqed.


Yes, you will get some results from real, legitimate blogs, but the vast majority of the results will point to splogs, splogs, and splogs.

Twenty minutes ago I received the first bounced spam message. Some MTA informed me that it had no user named 'mark' and that it was sorry it couldn't deliver the message.

Both the 'Return-path' and the 'From' fields were forged and pointed to a made-up chongqed.org email address. The spam is spamvertizing various geocities URLs. I have a little script that acts as my browser's homepage. It gathers a couple of RSS feeds, formats them, and let's me see the description and the links. One of those RSS feed is, of course, the slashdot feed.

CAPTCHAs have become very popular among the blogger and even among the wiki crowd to prevent spamming by automated bot scripts. Wikipedia's article on CAPTCHAs is one of the few places where accessibility problems of the CAPTCHA system are discussed.


However, the only recommendation Wikipedia gives is to resort to audio as opposed to visual CAPTCHAs.


But there is a far better solution. Another post about Lee's poor, old wiki. After it was cleaned by the
WikiMinion for a couple of weeks, the infamous UseMod bug showed up again and the wiki couldn't be edited anymore. So it was quiet there recently. Very quiet.

But when I checked today to see whether it was still quiet, I was greeted by as MSIS 404 error message. Lee's wiki is currently under a heavy spam attack. This no longer qualifies as spamming, it seems more like a DOS attack at this point.
He has been spamming this wiki alone over 200 times today. And while I am typing, his bot keeps spamming and my bot keeps cleaning it.
