The truth is, warmer days are on their way... really... I promise. Because organizing a successful event takes a good amount of planning and logistics, I am sending this letter out now, to invite you to apply to participate in the Manchester Arts Festival which will take place on Saturday July 25th, 2009 in the downtown of Manchester-by-the-Sea. All applications are reviewed, and the work approved by a jury panel. We have great hopes for this year's event, with diverse live entertainment, children's activities and a comprehensive advertising plan to draw from a large regional pool. We will also be featuring a "plein air" fresh paint contest with generous cash prizes (details to follow).

As you may have heard, last year's festival was hugely successful, and took place on a picture perfect, New England Summer day. The streets of Manchester-by-the-Sea were crowded with hundreds of happy people enjoying the beautiful day as well as the fine works, crafts and wares. The scenic parks with views of the harbor, the streets and common were bustling with Artists, patrons and browsers, and music filled the air. The many letters and emails we received (as well as letters-to-the-editor featured in local newspapers) following the day, communicated unanimous appreciation for the event from visitors, locals and exhibitors alike.

We hope you will add the Manchester Arts Festival to your busy Summer calendar. This will be a one day event. This year a boxed lunch menu (application page 4) has been added for your convenience. Thanks to Chris Shea and The Landing Restaurant, we will be taking orders for, then delivering to your display area, a fresh boxed lunch during the event, if you so desire. Boxed lunches will be ten dollars each. As in the past, volunteers with water and fruit will be available, and can watch your display when needed. We hope the lunches will assist in making this an enjoyable, as well as profitable, day.

Please DO NOT DELAY. Though this may seem early, time passes quickly, and we have a lot of work to do in organizing this event.

Additionally, please feel free to forward the MAF Application for Entry 2009.pdf to any artists/artisans you feel would be good additions to our event. Residents open up their private gardens, alleyways, and courtyards and allow artists to display and sell their artwork. It is a chance for visitors to tour the private spaces of Beacon Hill while viewing original artwork. Thousands of people attend each year. It is a free popular event in the neighborhood, with a festive atmosphere and volunteer musicians playing in various gardens during the event.

The Art Walk usually has around 100 participating artists, and we expect to add some new gardens this year and accept additional artists. We hope you will participate by displaying and selling your original artwork. As we did last year, we have reserved several indoor locations that will be ready to accept artists in case of rain. Architects/contractors/lighting designers/sculptors may choose to work alone or collaboratively; we encourage you to collaborate with a contractor early on regarding project costs. So this new “beacon” is visible from afar, proposals must include some sort of light elements. Some applicants may propose highlighting new sculptural elements with hued beams of light; other applicants may propose a light sculpture that emits a constantly changing pattern. Union Square’s three main streets, fi rst laid out in the 1630s, were major trade routes. Farmers brought their dairy products and produce by horseback and in carts from Lexington, Arlington, Medford, Cambridge and Somerville along Charlestown Lane (later Milk Row and then Somerville Avenue) and the Road to Newtowne (Cambridge Road, later Washington Street) through Union Square to Charlestown. Here, the goods were carried on ferries and

later across bridges over a narrow strip of the Mystic River to Boston. Union Square was a way station along this agricultural route for approximately 200 years, serving the travelers with taverns, as well as wheelwrights’ and blacksmiths’ shops.

The square continued to play an important role in history. From the height of the fortifi cation on nearby Prospect Hill overlooking Union Square, colonial militiamen in 1775 observed the movements of the British Army down below in Boston Harbor and, according to local legend, relayed the famous signal from the North Church. The British marched down Charlestown Lane on their way to Lexington and Concord, and several small skirmishes occurred in Union Square. In response to the Chamber’s Retail Division and local artists, the event will be transformed to have a major local arts component.

Don’t miss this opportunity to be a part of influencing the transformation of a major community event! The Bazaar will take place Thursday, Friday, & Saturday, July 31, August 1 & 2 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm each day on Main Street. Artists are invited to participate on one, two, or three days for the modest fee of $25 per day. Cape Ann artists are encouraged to sign-up as soon as possible and no later than Monday, May 12.
