But the online Solaris documentation (&lt;a href="http://docs.sun.com"&gt;docs.sun.com&lt;/a&gt;, very good, always worth the look) had the right answer: &lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;slice 2:&lt;br /&gt;refers to the entire disk, by convention. This slice is defined&lt;br /&gt;automatically by the format utility and the Solaris installation&lt;br /&gt;programs.
