History Of Bhojpuri Cinema

Bhojpuri's history begins in 1962 with the well-received film Ganga Maiyya Tohe Piyari Chadhaibo ("Mother Ganges, I will offer you a yellow sari"), which was directed by Kundan Kumar.

Throughout the following decades, films were produced only in fits and starts. Films such as Bidesiya ("Foreigner," 1963, directed by S. N. Tripathi) and Ganga ("Ganges," 1965, directed by Kundan Kumar) were profitable and popular, but in general Bhojpuri films were not commonly produced in the 1960s and 1970s.

In the 1980s, enough Bhojpuri films were produced to tentatively make up an industry. Films such as Mai ("Mom," 1989, directed by Rajkumar Sharma) and Hamar Bhauji ("My Brother's Wife," 1983, directed by Kalpataru) continued to have at least sporadic success at the box office. However, this trend faded out by the end of the decade, and by 1990, the nascent industry seemed to be completely finished.

The industry took off again in 2001 with the super hit Saiyyan Hamar ("My Sweetheart," directed by Mohan Prasad), which shot the hero of that film, Ravi Kissan, to superstardom.Panditji Batai Na Biyah Kab Hoi ("Priest, tell me when I will marry," 2005, directed by Mohan Prasad) and Sasura Bada Paisa Wala ("My father-in-law, the rich guy," 2005).

In a measure of the Bhojpuri film industry's rise, both of these did much better business in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar than mainstream Bollywood hits at the time, and both films, made on extremely tight budgets, earned back more than ten times their production costs.Sasura Bada Paisa Wala also introduced Manoj Tiwari, formerly a well-loved folk singer, to the wider audiences of Bhojpuri cinema.

In 2008, he and Ravi Kissan are still the leading actors of Bhojpuri films, and their fees increase with their fame. The extremely rapid success of their films has led to dramatic increases in Bhojpuri cinema's visibility, and the industry now supports an awards showand a trade magazine, Bhojpuri City,which chronicles the production and release of what are now over one hundred films per year. Many of the major stars of mainstream Bollywood cinema, including Amitabh Bachchan, have also recently worked in Bhojpuri films. Mithun Chakraborty' s Bhojpuri debut Bhole Shankar released in 2008 is considered as the biggest Bhojpuri hit of all time.

Bhojpuri films are films in Bhojpuri, mainly watched by people from Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh in East India.It is also watched by many parts of the world, including Brazil, Fiji, Guyana, Mauritius, South Africa, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, many colonizers faced labor shortages due to the abolition of slavery; thus, they imported manyIndians, many from Bhojpuri-speaking regions. Today, some 200 million people in the West Indies, Oceania, and South America speak Bhojpuri as a native or second language and they also watch Bhojpuri film .

Ravi Kishan:the uncrowned emperor of Bhojpuri cinem

He's the uncrowned emperor of Bhojpuri cinema. Right now, Ravi Kishan is shooting a remake of Mahesh Bhatt's Naam. "It's called Purab Aur Paschimand stars Suman Ranganathan with me. The director is Jai Prakash, who did Manisha Koirala's Market," says the actor.

Kishan has also just shot with Amitabh Bachchan for Deepal Sawant's Ganga. "It was an unreal experience. He works so hard. When people call me the Amitabh of the Bhojpuri experience, I feel my chest swell with pride."

Now, in the era of remakes, when other filmmakers are re-doingDon, Sholay and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam , Kishan plans to rework Goutam Ghose's off-beat 1984 film Paar. "I'm going to produce this purely aiming at the National Awards," he says. "My name had been sent for the award for Best Supporting Actor inTere Naam , but I missed it. This year, for the Bhojpuri popular awards, Dilip Kumar gave me the Best Actor award, which whetted my appetite. I'm going to get into the role of a low-class pig-tender in Paar, cut my hair, and wallow in mud, just like Naseerbhai. For my female audience, I'll wear a flimsy dhoti and remain bare-bodied and wet throughout."

Ravi will sign Konkona Sen-Sharma for Shabana Azmi's role in Paar. "I will be shooting it in June or July. Amol Shetge -- who directed me in Ravi Kissen, where I play the double role of Ravi and Kissen -- will direct Paar."

Is he flattered to have a film named after him? "It makes me happy, but reminds me of my responsibility. I had touched rock bottom in my career. People said I should pack up and return to Jaunpur," Kishan says. "My first film was Udhar Ki Zindagiwith Kajol in 1990. My last appearance was as the priest in Satish Kaushik's Tere Naam. I must have done 25-oddfilms and TV serials like Hello Inspector and Hawaayein. This was when I was almost jobless. Then, Bhojpuri cinema changedmy life."

He has competed 17 Bhojpuri movies in four years. "I was the only one who believed there was hope for the Bhojpuri film industry," he says. "I worked hard in every department -- sitting on scripts, music sittings, casting, etc. I used all my contacts in Bollywood, and convinced them to work at a discount. It wasn't easy, but it happened. Gradually, Nagma came into the picture. Our first film, Panditji Batayeen Na Biyah Kab Hoyee, became a major hit. The song Lenga uthai remote sewas a rage."

He adds, "In Bhojpuri cinema, we can't show cleavage and kisses. But we can play with words. Middleclass women in Bihar and UP love my antics. They find me very hot. My wife gets insecure about it, but now she understands I have no appetite for the naughty stuff. I love cinema like a madman."

So, how does this 34-year old with three kids cope with Bhojpuri-speaking women propositioning him? "Firmly, respectfully and with no hard feelings," he smiles.

He continues, "The credit must go to Mohanji Prasad, godfather of Bhojpuri cinema. When I was at my lowest ebb in Hindi cinema, he offered me a film called Saiyyan Hamar. To everyone's surprise, it became a silver jubilee hit. Six months after its release, I had no work. Then, the offers started pouring in. All my Bhojpuri films were hits. I have seen my darkest days. Now, all my dreams are coming true."

A Bhojpuri film featuring a model-turned-actress from Ukraine was released across Bihar.Tanya, 27, plays the lead role in Firangi Dulhaniya (Foreign Bride). She was seen earlier in Bollywood music director Bappi Lahiri's Gori hai kalaiyan video.Firangi Dulhaniya is shot extensively in foreign locations, which is quite rare for Bhojpuri films."Tanya is making history because she is the first foreign actress in a Bhojpuri movie," says director Rajan Kumar Singh.

"The film is inspired by the real-life story of a student in Patna, who went to study in Russia, fell in love with a Russian girl, married her and brought her here,"he adds.Tanya plays the young bride who tries to adapt to an alien culture, language and food. She learnt to speak Bhojpuri from a teacher and Bhojpuri language expert from Fiji.

Claiming that Bhojpuri films were fast gaining popularity in international markets like USA and Europe, film actor Raza Murad called for its aggressive overseas marketing. ''The popularity of Bhojpuri cinema is no longer confined to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar or in Bhojpuri speaking countries like Mauritus, Surinam, Fiji and Trinidad. ''Its cinema is fast gaining currency among people in Southern part of USA and European countries like the,'' claimed Murad, while talking to newspersons after the screening of a Bhojpuri film here, yesterday.

The actor known for his character roles and strong dialogue delivery, however, admitted Bhojpuri films were still confined to population of Indian origin residing in US and Europe. He said efforts like dubbing the film in English could make these films popular among the aboriginals in USA and Europe. ''Agrressive overseas marketing is the need of the hour for making Bhojpuri cinema globally competitive and with Bollywood biggies like Amitabh Bachchan andAjay Devgan acting with Bhojpuri film icons like Manoj Tewari, the countryside cinema of UP and Bihar could soon be a global success,'' hoped Murad.
