Dab tiny dots of a neutral highlighter or pale concealer on the outer and inner corners of both eyes, using only a pinprick amount on the inner corners. Blend it in well with the tip of your little finger. This will lift the eyes and make them look brighter.

Cover the entire eyelid, up to the brow bone, with a neutral colour that is as close to your natural skin colour as you can find. This will open up the eyes and make any mottled areas or veins disappear.

Brush a layer of mascara over the top of the upper lashes, then twice from below. This gives definition, yet looks more natural than a thick third layer.

Add a very fine line of dark brown or grey eyeliner close to the upper lashes. Keep the liner subtle, or the fresh-faced, bright-eyed facade will be ruined.

If you are looking tired and all the light-reflecting pigments in the world are failing you, brush a little matte (not sparkly) pink eyeshadow or blusher underneath your eyes. This may sound like a make-up tip for an extra in a horror movie, but it is one of the oldest tricks in the book.

For dark circles, but not bags, under the eyes, choose a concealer that contains 'light-reflecting pigments'. The tiny particles in the pigment refract light off the skin. A traditional concealer is just a thicker version of foundation and will form into crepey lines under the eyes. Some eye creams for counteracting dark circles, especially those for daytime use, have light reflectors included in the formula. The light reflectors make black circles reduce in strength almost instantly, tricking you into believing that the cream is getting rid of the dark circles when it is really only disguising them.

To cover up circles, face the mirror, tilt your chin down slightly and look up: the worst part of the dark rings will be visible. Using a brush or your ring finger, apply a little concealer in this area only and blend it in gently. If you apply concealer where the rings look their worst when you look straight into the mirror, or you try to cover the entire under-eye area, you will create 'panda eyes'.

Make-up with a tan is always tricky and even modest amounts can look excessive in the heat. Use an oil-free foundation or tinted moisturizer or dab a little concealer where needed. If you want to define your eyes but keep the look natural, use waterproof mascara and add a tiny bit of eyebrow pencil to the outer arches of the brows - do not fill the entire brow. Put a tiny dot of a little pale eyeshadow on the middle of the eyelids and blend it across with your finger.

Wearing ordinary make-up when you are on the beach is not recommended, unless you want to look like the Bride of Dracula after a swim. However, cosmetics companies have recently launched excellent stay-put mascara formulas and water-resistant (not waterproof) eyeshadows. Although wearing waterproof mascara on your lashes and brows (choose the palest shade you can find for brows) is worth doing, the remaining contents of your make-up bag are best left for the evening.

Reduce under-eye bags by applying a little astringent eye gel that has been kept in te fridge. Pat a pea-sized amount around the entire eye socket, or 'contour' as it is known in the trade. Alternatively, place a cold slice of raw potato over each eye. Thanks to the potassium content, potato is said to do wonders for dark circles.

Have your eyelashes and eyebrows dyed, and, if you want to be really organised and horrify friends with your vanity, have your lashes permed. Shaping the brows by thinning the outer lower part will also give your face a neater, fresher appearance - useful the morning after a long, alcoholic evening.

Eyes are the most delicate areas of the face and require special protection in the sun. Combined lip and eye sticks are convenient to use and offer a high level of protection against UVA and UVB rays. Because the skin around the eyes is thinner than elsewhere on the face, this area is particularly vulnerable to burning and wrinkling. Make sure the entire eye area is covered lightly with a screen of at least SPF15 and always wear sunglasses.
