In North Vietnam, life is slower and more traditional than a part in the Southern. The city center of Hanoi, the county’s capital, is arranged around a lake that is often misty and quiet.

It is also an artisan's town, and what you'll do there is less destination-oriented, than just wandering, stopping for food along the way. Art galleries are common, and the streets are wide promenades. Still, the relaxed, rural-like pace of Hanoi makes it hard to remember that this is the capital of a country of 80 million, the size of Germany.

Hanoi's "water puppet show," located near Hoan Kiem Lake, is hawked endlessly in backpacker hotels, but tends to underwhelm. And every taxi driver knows the way to Ho Chi Minh's tomb, which can be fun for a photo. But in general, Vietnam is a place to experience daily life in the country. Rather than working through a list of sites, you'll head out of your hotel for a walk through the endless streets banked with roadside restaurants, markets and galleries on every block.

In Vietnam, two trips to rural areas are common, and both are worth the time and effort. The first is to Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a two-hour ferry ride from the country's third-largest city, Haiphong. You can arrange a trip to the area with several tour operators from most hotels in Hanoi. From Hanoi, it's a three-day trip, with some accommodations available on the water in sleeper boats or on land in modest but clean hotels. Days in Halong Bay are spent sailing amid limestone cliffs that rise like immense walls from the middle of the sea. Some are narrower at the base than the top. Climbing is not yet possible, though that is inevitably coming.

Floating villages built on drums are lashed to these cliffs. A boat captain can usually arrange a seafood lunch for $10, plus a tour of these villages, some of which have started to make more money from tourism than fishing. You’ll have the best night sleep of your life.

Once back in Hanoi, the second outing you should consider is a jeep trip for three to six hours into the villages north and west. Spend a night in the highlands, Sapa for instance. Home to people called collectively, if a bit broadly, "the hill tribes," life in this area is culturally different from life below. The people there attract interest for hewing even today to ancient costume and practices. The variation of people in the hills is too vast to list. It's important to arrange a guide who speaks Hmong or any of the other hundreds of dialects.

Geometri atau ilmu ukur telah menginspirasi lahirnya Renaisan, yang pada akhirnya membawa Eropa menujuk puncak kejayaan. Realita ini terlihat dalam karya-karya seni Eropa mulai pada abad 12-15. Inspirasi ini kemudian memicu lahirnya revolusi sains di Eropa pada abad ke 15-17, yang dimotor oleh Copernicus, Galileo , Descartes dan Newton. Pemikiran ini kemudian termanifestasikan dalam bentuk teknologi yang memicu lahirnya revolusi industri dan mendorong terjadinya proses kolonialisme dan imperialisme. Ia memicu terjadinya arus balik (meminjam bahasa Pramoedya Ananta Toer) dari selatan ke utara menjadi dari utara ke selatan. Bangsa-bangsa di timur menjadi warga kelas dua di dunia.

Perkembangan lanjutan dalam studi geometri telah membawa krisis ke dalam tradisi saintifik di belahan dunia utara. Kondisi ini terjadi ketika mulai dikenalnya objek-objek objek yang tidak berdimensi bulat (garis=dimensi 1, lingkaran=2, bola=3, kubus=3 dan seterusnya) melainkan sebuah bilangan pecahan atau fraktal. Hal ini terlupakan dalam kebudayaan Eropa.

Penelitian yang dirintis dan dimotori oleh Bandung Fe Institute (www.bandungfe.net) dan Bandung Fe Institute dan Surya Research International (www.ekonofisika.com) menunjukan bahwa batik bersifat fraktal. Jauh sebelum Eropa mengenal konsep fraktal, kita telah mengakuisisinya dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Batik telah membuktikan kepada dunia bahwa Indonesia bukanlah sebuah bangsa terbelakang. Batik bukanlah sebuah seni tradisi semata, ia dapat menjadi inspirasi untuk kebangkitan Indonesia.

Namun tentu saja, kita tidak boleh berhenti pada upaya penggalian kearifan nilai-nilai budaya tradisional semata. Kita harus mampu melakukan inovasi dengan memanfaatkan sains dan teknologi untuk memperkaya budaya Indonesia, bukan mendangkalkan budaya tradisi yang kita miliki. Semangat inilah yang melatar belakangi dikembangkannya teknologi pembuat motif batik dengan memanfaatkan perangkat komputasi oleh Bandung Fe Institute.

Pakar makanan Kanada, Massimo Marcone pernah mengangap Kopi Luwak adalah legenda masyarakat belaka, dan melakukan test laboratorium dan menemukan bukti bahwa sistem pencernaan musang mengurangi kadar kafein pada kopi yang dimana menjelaskan bahwa kopi Luwak tidak sekeras kopi pada umumya, dan enzim musang mencerna protein penyebab pahitnya kopi.

Marcone adalah salah satu ahli yang terkenal oleh dunia dibidang makanan, datang ke Indonesia masuk ke hutan tropis Sumatra, dia menggumpulkan kisaran 5 kg tongkolan kopi luwak utuh yang terbentuk dari biji-biji kopi. Dengan menggunakan “standar emas” untuk menganalisa kopi luwak dalam lab di Universitas Guelph di Ontario. Seperti ahli forensik membaca tanda bekas peluru, Marcone menatap kopi luwak di bawah mikroskop elektron, mencari tanda khusus dari kotoran kopi luwak. Penelitian menyimpulkan bahwa peminum kopi luwak perlu berhati hati dengan kopi yang diminum supaya tidak tertipu, karena sulit untuk menbuktikan keaslian secara visual.

Kopi Luwak asli beraroma floral, vanilla, coklat, tidak pakit, tidak sepat, after taste yang kompleks dan mantap sehingga terasa sampai ke kerongkongan, tetap enak walau sudah dibiarkan dingin.

Kopi terbaik didunia seperti Jamaica Blue Mountain, bisa punya ranking lebih tinggi dari nilai cupping test resmi bila dinilai dari segi aroma dan rasa, tetapi tidak se eksotis seperti Kopi Luwak.

Unique Bai Style Architecture
The famous example is the Yan Family's Big Courtyard in the central part of Xizhou. The house is of the typical Bai design known as "Sanfang Yizhaobi" (a courtyard rooms on three sides and a screen wall on the remaining side) and "Sihe Wutianjing" (one big courtyard with four smaller ones at the four corners of the main one). The house puts great emphasis on designing the front gate of the compound, because it shows the owner economic status and also is the symbol of bringing honor to his ancestor. The doors and windows are engraved with the figures of different birds and flowers. The walls are decorated with wash paintings.

This ceremony was originally held by the senior members of a family to express best wishes to juniors when they were going to pursue studies, learn a skill, start a business or get married. The first course smells a little bitter; the second course is a bit sweet (adding candy and walnut pieces in it); and the third course is memorable (with condiments in it). Tembok Bali, its first location outside Malaysia, opened this summer and focuses more than any of its other properties on the group's renowned spa offering.

The low-key but bijou atmosphere is apparent from the moment you enter the resort via a narrow tree-lined drive. While registration takes place, your feet are washed and massaged in an airy pavilion; at this point you can decide the "discovery path" of spa treatments you wish to take during your stay. On the way to the room you pass the candles, petals and intricate woodwork that are to be found throughout the intimate retreat.

Relaxation and well-being is all: from yoga at dawn to the continual offers of fresh juices and cooled towels as you sun yourself by the pool, to the daily lessons in Balinese crafts and the soft chimes of the gamelan-player that accompany dinner overlooking the Indian Ocean.

Treatments in the spa range from Mesipat (a natural facial) to Penganten Melukat, a two-hour session involving massage, body scrub, hot wrap and flower bath that couples traditionally enjoy three days before their wedding.

Tembok Bali is not near any of the island's well-known sights; the point is not to roam but to de-stress with no distractions (which is why there are no televisions in the rooms, mobile phone use is discouraged, and guests must be at least 16). It would be a pity to go to Bali and not to sample its ancient Hindu culture. But for a high-powered couple in severe need of regaining equilibrium this would be the perfect start to a longer break.

Everything, in any case, is here. The restaurant offers meaty European fare, but far better are the local dishes and produce fresh from the sea. Spicy red snapper fillets, sliced king prawns and seared blue-fin tuna are all delicious; on no account miss the sublime fish satay, prepared Balinese-style with the flesh minced and mixed with a heady sauce before grilling. After a day's treatments and then dinner surrounded by candles, who would miss the pumping beats of the Kuta beach nightclubs? You'll be glad they're too far away to disturb the peace.

LOCATION

On the island's northern coast, and at the foot of its highest mountain, Gunung Agung. Tembok Bali's only neighbours are small fishing settlements and the odd roadside shop. It's an undeveloped part of Bali, which means it's extremely peaceful.

COMFORTABLE?
The 27 Kamar rooms, located either up steps or down by lily-covered ponds, are decked out in YTL's trademark dark wood panelling, relieved by lighter wood carvings. Each room has a balcony facing the central garden area which overlooks the sea; the only sound to be heard is of the waves crashing against the shore. The two suites have separate living rooms. A pair of villas each have their own front door leading on to a small garden with plunge pool, sun-bathing deck and separate access down to the seafront. All the decor aims to be low-key, with natural finishes and influenced by local traditions.

During this period the western coast can be wet and stormy and occasionally unsafe for ferries and smaller boats to lift anchor. However, visitors can still visit the islands via the normally more popular routes, most of which are to the northeast of Ko Chang, anyway.

The Past
The history of Trat can be traced back to the reign of King Prasat Thong of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya. Formerly known as Muang Thung Yai, Trat has played an important role in the development of country's stability and economy due to its strategic location. The town of Trat has later become a community of Chinese Merchants.

Trat served as a checkpoint and buffer city in 1767 and was responsible for providing provisions to King Taksin the Great before he moved his navy from Chanthaburi to Ayutthaya, where he expelled the Burmese and liberated the Kingdom from Burmese rule.

In the Ratanakosin period, during the reign of King Rama V, Trat played an important role again in stabilizing the country's sovereignty. King Rama V made an agreement with the French government (who had also taken Chanthaburi under its supervision) to get Trat back. In doing this, Phra Tabong, Siamrat and Sri Sophon were traded off.

The Ascott Group (Ascott) has transformed a national heritage building and Southeast Asia’s tallest tower in the 1950s into a premium serviced residence in Singapore. The former Asia Insurance Building (AIB) is now the Ascott Singapore Raffles Place after a S$60-million conservation and restoration effort.

Today, the architectural icon stands as a private sanctuary in a class of its own. It provides global travellers the comforts of a home right at the heart of the Marina Bay waterfront business and lifestyle hub.

AIB was the first modern highrise office building designed and constructed in Singapore after World War II. It symbolised Singapore’s development as an important financial hub, and is one of the few remaining highrise buildings from the 1950s. In April 2007, the 52 year-old landmark was gazetted as a conservation building by the Urban Redevelopment Authority. The building represents a legacy of the country’s history through Ascott’s careful conservation and restoration.

AIB was designed in 1955 by Dr Ng Keng Siang, the first Singapore member of the Royal Institute of British Architects. Dr Ng was a prominent British-trained local architect who demonstrated a quantum leap in the architectural field by successfully marrying the tenets of the modern movement with local influences.

The Right Honourable Malcolm Macdonald, P.C., then Commissioner General for the United Kingdom in Southeast Asia (1948 to 1955) said: “The building was a most distinguished landmark, seen from miles in every direction… in one of the world’s greatest commercial centres.” This statement was made on 19 June 1953 as he put the finishing touches to a plaque that is still displayed at the building’s exterior more than half a century later.

Mr Shriniwas Rai, lawyer and former nominated Member of Parliament who worked in his law office in Asia Insurance Building for 35 years, was 10 when he first saw the building. He was arriving in Singapore with his family from India by ship. Mr Rai said: “Asia Insurance Building was an attraction as many parents brought their children there for a view of the tallest building in Southeast Asia. It was ‘the’ premium office building at the time; space in the tower was S$1 per square feet, five times more than the 20 cents per square feet cost at other buildings. I have fond memories of my time there; to me it is one of the few buildings which can be truly considered Singapore’s national architecture heritage. I am glad that the building is being preserved and with added glamour as the new Ascott Raffles Place.”

Mr Lim Chin Beng, Ascott’s Chairman said: “Asia Insurance Building has a special place in Singapore’s history as Southeast Asia’s tallest tower in the 1950s. Over the last two years, we have given a lot of care to conserve this gem and bring it back to its former glory. We looked into every detail to keep as much of its heritage as possible. It is a landmark with a unique 50s Art Deco architecture that is befitting of Ascott’s flagship in Singapore.”

An ode to Ha Long Bay

Our first day was spent relaxing on the deck and in our cabin, although there were various activities tourists could enjoy partaking in on land, such as visiting Bat Cave, Cua Van fishing village or Soi Sim Beach. Most of us were not interested in stepping off the junk, since it served as an idyllic day-trippers’ paradise. Lying on the beds at night, we could see both the high limestone towers and bright stars glittering in the dark sky.

We went to bed early that night. Perhaps it was the effect of consuming a few glasses of good red wine on deck, or the cool breeze coming in from the large window mixed in with the intoxicating air from the cream lilies, that served as soothing lullabies.

The second day began filled with energy as we woke up early to participate in a tai chi session on the sun deck. We then transferred to the day-trip boat and cruised to the bay’s most untouched areas. A buffet-style breakfast was served on the boat, which was not only impressive in its various delicious Western dishes, but also served very good Vietnamese pho (noodle soup).

By the time we completed our breakfast we had reached Ngoc Vung Island. It was sunny and none of us could refuse to take a light bicycle trip through untouched forests to enjoy the natural scenery here. After half an hour, we found ourselves in front of the endless white sand-beach with not a single human shadow in sight. From afar, the sea could appeared as an emerald. I changed into a bathing suit while my mother chose to relax under the cool shadows of the pine forest.

The highlight of the trip turned out to be kayaking in the afternoon, when our boat reached Cong Do area. All of us were very eager, although my mother seemed hesitant. She had never squeezed into a kayak before and she didn’t know how to swim.

Our second day came to a good end with a delicious dinner, a grilled seafood feast, after which we went off to see people catching squids offshore. Passengers who caught squids could be found at our table for a second dinner, laughing away as they shared their funny stories.

The next morning our ship steamed forward to Sung Sot Cave, one of the bay’s most impressive limestone caverns. The entrance required a hike up stone steps to a spot high above the bay. More steps led into receding chambers, past humongous stalactites and stalagmites that resembled giant sandcastles.

Our cruise ended in the afternoon with us waving to the staff as we returned to land. Ha Long is like a story whose ending I thought I had reached but in reality I discovered that it has many alternative endings that need to be discovered, again and again.
