Neighbors were awakened by sounds of breaking glass and smoke alarms shortly before the arrival of fire crews. Residents tried to enter the involved apartment, but the smoke and heat was too intense. Firefighters made a rapid entry after reports of a person still inside.

Roof teams cut ventilation holes to release super heated gases, as fire attack teams performed fire suppression and rescue efforts. During the attack on the blaze, Firefighters discovered a 65 year-old elderly woman inside the home. The patient was immediately provided with advanced life support intervention and transported to Sherman Oaks Medical Center. The patient was pronounced dead at the hospital.

A positive identification of the deceased woman, as well as the cause, time, and manner of death, will be determined by the Coroner's Office.

The fire was confined to one unit and rapidly extinguished in just 16 minutes, with 36 Firefighters. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

Submitted by Erik Scott
Los Angeles Fire Department

LAFD 'Toy Safety' Widget Arrives For the Holidays

To help identify toys and children's products that have been recalled, the Los Angeles Fire Department and Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) are again teaming up this holiday season to provide a 'Toy & Children's Product Recall' widget that is easy to share with friends and family.

This free 'widget' displays the most recent child product and toy recalls from CPSC - and is easily added to your personal website or blog.

Will You Help Us?

During this holiday season, we're asking webmasters and bloggers across our nation to include this widget on their sites. joins the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) in encouraging the safe use of portable electric heaters:

Read the manufacturer's instructions and warning labels before using your heater.

Never leave an operating heater unattended and always unplug the heater when not in use.

Unplug the heater by pulling the plug straight from the outlet. Inspect the power cord regularly, and never use a heater with a damaged cord.

Check periodically for a secure plug/outlet fit. If the plug does not fit snugly into the outlet or if the plug becomes very hot, the outlet may need to be replaced. Check with a qualified electrician to replace the outlet.

Do not use a power strip or extension cord to power your heater. Overheating of the power strip or extension cord could result in a fire.

Do not plug any other electrical device into the same outlet as your heater. This could result in overheating.

String the included power cord above any rug or carpeting. Anything you place on top of a cord - including furniture, may damage it.

Keep combustible materials such as furniture, pillows, bedding, papers, clothes, curtains, paint, gas cans and matches at least three feet from the front of the heater and away from the sides and rear. Do not block the heater's air intake or outlet.

Unless the heater is designed for outdoor use or in bathrooms, do not use in damp or wet areas. Parts in the heater may be damaged by moisture.

Place the heater on a level, flat surface. Only use a heater on tabletops when specified by the manufacturer.

Heaters should be kept away from pets and children and never used in a child's room without adult presence.

Seniors, the disabled, those living alone or in student housing may be at increased risk due to careless or improper use of heaters. If you know someone in this risk category, please share this safety list and your concerns.

To learn more, listen One such time is on this 11th day of the 11th month. Please join us in taking time to ponder the following question...

WHAT IS A VET?

Some veterans bear visible signs of their service: a missing limb, a jagged scar, a certain look in their eye.

Others may carry the evidence inside them: a pin holding a bone together, a piece of shrapnel in the leg - or perhaps another sort of inner steel: a soul forged in the refinery of adversity.

Except in parades, however, the men and women who have kept America safe wear no badge or emblem. You can't tell a vet just by looking.

What is a Vet?

He is the cop on the beat who spent six months in Saudi Arabia sweating two gallons a day making sure the armored personnel carriers didn't run out of fuel.

He is the barroom loudmouth, dumber than five wooden planks, whose overgrown frat-boy behavior is outweighed a hundred times in the cosmic scales by four hours of exquisite bravery near the 38th parallel.

She - or he - is the nurse who fought against futility and went to sleep sobbing every night for two solid years in Da Nang.

He is the POW who went away one person and came back another -or- didn't come back at all.

He is the Quantico drill instructor that has never seen combat - but has saved countless lives by turning slouchy, no-account rednecks and gang members into Marines, and teaching them to watch each other's backs.

He is the parade-riding Legionnaire who pins on his ribbons and medals with a prosthetic hand.

He is the career quartermaster who watches the ribbons and medals pass him by.

He is the three anonymous heroes in The Tomb Of The Unknowns, whose presence at the Arlington National Cemetery must forever preserve the memory of all the anonymous heroes whose valor dies unrecognized with them on the battlefield or in the ocean's sunless deep.

He is the old guy bagging groceries at the supermarket - palsied now and aggravatingly slow - who helped liberate a Nazi death camp and who wishes all day long that his wife were still alive to hold him when the nightmares come.

He is an ordinary and yet an extraordinary human being, a person who offered some of his life's most vital years in the service of his country, and who sacrificed his ambitions so others would not have to sacrifice theirs.

He is a soldier and a savior and a sword against the darkness, and he is nothing more than the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of the finest, greatest nation ever known.

So remember, each time you see someone who has served our country, just lean over and say Thank You. That's all most people need, and in most cases it will mean more than any medals they could have been awarded or were awarded.

Two little words that mean a lot, "THANK YOU".

Remember, November 11th is Veterans Day.

One fine man often stated...

"It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag."

Father Denis Edward O'Brien, USMC Veteran

Rest Assured: The Men and Women of the LAFD Will Never Forget!

Submitted by Brian Humphrey, Spokesman
Los Angeles Fire Department

Fire Rips Through 4 Story Hollywood Apartments

On Monday, November 9, 2009 at 6:15 PM, 14 Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, 7 LAFD Rescue Ambulances, 1 Arson Unit, 2 Urban Search and Rescue Units, 1 Hazardous Materials Team, 4 EMS Battalion Captains, 4 Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams, 1 Division Chief Officer Command Team, 1 Rehab Air Tender and 1 Emergency Air under the direction of Assistant Chief David Yamahata responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 1425 Detroit Street in Hollywood.

Lightforce 27 quickly arrived to find fire showing from a unit on the third floor of a four story U-shaped apartment building that was under construction. Additional resources were swiftly requested.

Firefighters made a concentrated effort to quickly extinguish this early evening fire. A Drop Bag operation was rapidly performed to bring hoselines to the third floor while firefighters on the roof cut 'heat-holes' allowing heat, smoke and gases to escape.

This proved to be a fast moving fire that started on the third floor and without delay traveled through the walls of five units. Several other units suffered water damage.

Firefighters not only had to battle the blaze but met additional dangers early on with electrical wires arching and having to navigate with limited visibility over smoke filled floors that hid a large hole from an unfinished trash chute being constructed. Due to firefighters keeping safety in the forefront of their mind and the keen supervision of the Incident Commander, no injuries occurred.

The blaze was fully extinguished by 101 firefighters in one hour and seventeen minutes limiting the damage to $50,000 ($50,000 structure & $0 contents). The cause of the blaze was from 'sweating pipe' on the third floor.

Submitted by Erik Scott
Los Angeles Fire Department

LAFD 'Crew 3' Stands Ready To Answer The Call

Many are surprised to learn that

the LAFD has its own Handcrew.

Here are answers to the three most common questions:

What is LAFD Handcrew 3? It is a Volunteer Type II Handcrew managed by the Los Angeles Fire Department and currently organized as a Wildland Explorer Post. But few were mindful of placing fresh batteries in their Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detectors, a simple act that can save lives.

You need to change your batteries!

That's the message the International Association of Fire Chiefs, Energizer Batteries and nearly 6,000 fire departments - including the Los Angeles Fire Department sent nationwide with the annual Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery campaign.

The men and women of the LAFD urge you to take the few minutes necessary to change every Smoke Alarm and CO Detector battery in your home. The simple act of changing the batteries in these devices can protect you from relentless killers.

We can't think of an easier task that offers such reward.

FACT: You'd never let a simple convenience like your television remote control go without batteries. Why then ignore the most important devices in your home?

To learn more about Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery, please visit:

www.lafd.org/cyb.htm

Submitted by Brian Humphrey, Spokesman
Los Angeles Fire Department

Los Angeles Firefighters Offer Wind Safety Tips

With the continuance of seasonal winds, the men and women of the Los Angeles Fire Department remind Southern California residents to use caution at home, in the workplace and on the road.

Strong winds compound wildfire danger. We therefore ask residents - especially those in foothill and wildland communities, to use caution with all flame or spark producing equipment, including vehicles and power tools. Those living in hazardous brush areas should remain vigilant, and report nearby smoke and flames immediately to 9-1-1.

Additional preparation, such as a fire safety survey of your property and a review of household emergency and neighborhood evacuation plans can help remove the apprehension that many of us feel when winds begin to blow.

With the possibility of downed power lines causing local power outages, drivers should use extreme caution when approaching darkened traffic signals. Whether driving on a main thoroughfare or a side street, motorists should treat all non-functioning traffic signals as a four way stop.

If you encounter downed wires, assume them to be energized and potentially lethal. Be careful that such wires haven't electrically charged puddles of water, chain link fences or other conductive sources.

In most circumstances, but especially during high winds, firefighters discourage the use of candles, lighters and fuel powered lanterns.

Now is a good time to fully charge your cell phone, check your flashlights, portable radios and spare batteries. Place these items strategically, and make sure others know how to find them. Before you activate a portable generator, make certain you know how to use it legally and safely.

And finally, please take a moment now to secure household items, such as outdoor furniture, that could cause harm or damage if catapulted by a wind gust, and to remove flammable items from around your home.

When outdoors, be careful for toppling trees, wind-blown debris or high profile vehicles buffeted by turbulent wind. If you must get behind the wheel, Los Angeles Firefighters remind you: "Heads Up, Easy on the Throttle and Expect the Unexpected!" ™

Submitted by Brian Humphrey, Spokesman
Los Angeles Fire Department

Firefighters Stress Portable Generator Safety

With weather conditions having a seasonal impact on energy supplies, many people are turning to portable electric generators as a source of temporary electricity for their homes.

If improperly installed or operated, a portable electric generator can become deadly due to electrical shock and carbon monoxide fumes.

Using a generator indoors CAN KILL YOU IN MINUTES!

Firefighters encourage you to contact a licensed electrician to install your generator to make sure it meets all local codes. Never connect a generator directly to household wiring without an appropriate transfer switch installed and be sure to notify your utility, which may be required by State Law.

Power from generators connected directly to household wiring can backfeed along power lines and electrocute anyone coming in contact with them, including lineworkers making repairs.

The Los Angeles Fire Department reminds you:

Generators can produce high levels of carbon monoxide (CO) very quickly, which can be deadly. Each year, more than 400 Americans die from unintentional CO poisoning.

Never operate your generator in an enclosed or partially enclosed space such as a patio or garage, and place it far, far away from any structure housing people or pets. Most of the serious carbon monoxide poisonings handled by Los Angeles Firefighters have been caused by generator exhaust fumes drifting into doors, windows, vents and crawl spaces.

Be certain to install and test carbon monoxide detectors in nearby enclosed areas whenever you operate a portable power generator.

Read the owner's manual thoroughly and make sure your generator is properly grounded and maintained.

Store fuel for your generator safely. Turn the motor off and let it cool before refueling.

Keep the generator dry, and make sure extension cords are rated for the load, free of cuts and worn insulation and have three-pronged plugs.

Do not overload the generator. A portable generator should be used only when necessary and only to power essential equipment or appliances

Use a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) to help prevent electrocutions and electrical shock injuries

Turn off all appliances powered by the generator before shutting down the generator

Keep children away from portable generators at all times!

Remember: Electricity is a powerful tool, and odorless carbon monoxide fumes can quickly lull you to deep and deadly sleep!

Submitted by Brian Humphrey, Spokesman
Los Angeles Fire Department

Firefighter Injured Tackling Atwater Village Blaze

On Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at 1:08 PM, 7 Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, 2 LAFD Rescue Ambulances, 1 Arson Unit, 1 Hazardous Materials Team, 1 EMS Battalion Captain, 2 Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams and 1 Division Chief Officer Command Team, a total of 51 Los Angeles Fire Department personnel under the direction of Assistant Chief Richard Warford, responded to a Structure Fire at 3507 Perlita Avenue in the Atwater Village area of Los Angeles.

Firefighters arrived quickly to discover fire on the second floor and within the attic of an 1100 square-foot two story single family home.

View Larger Map (you can also click, grab and zoom the pre-fire image above!)

Firefighters aggressively attacked the well-entrenched flames with handlines, confining the fire to the second floor and attic, extinguishing the blaze in just 24 minutes.

During fire attack, one Los Angeles Firefighter sustained first degree burns to his left upper arm and right hand, as well as second degree burns to his left ear. It is against the law to be inside a flood control channel in Los Angeles, regardless of the weather.

We urge you to visit the EDIS website and listen to NOAA Weather Radio or local radio and television stations for the latest weather or emergency information.

FLOOD PREVENTION AND PREPAREDNESS TIPS:
*Ensure that all drains, gutters and downspouts are functioning properly.
*Keep drainage areas (ditches, swales, small channels) free of debris.
*Move valuable or easily damaged items away from low-lying areas that may be prone to flooding.
*Identify and collect important documents that you may require in case of evacuation.
*Contact your insurance agent to assure that your flood and storm coverage is adequate and in effect.
*Prepare and keep at hand an emergency supply kit that includes food, water, medications, flashlight, battery-powered radio, rain gear and first aid supplies.
*Plan for the needs of pets at home and if you are evacuated.
*Keep your vehicle fueled in case power is cutoff to local fueling stations.
*Identify the safe routes from your home or workplace to high ground.
*Establish an out-of-state family contact so that friends and relatives can determine your location and status.
*If necessary, consult an engineer or licensed contractor to design or build permanent water and debris control systems for your property.
*Landscape slope areas with plants that are fire retardant and suitable for erosion control.
*Keep sandbags, plywood, plastic sheeting, lumber, hand tools and other materials handy for addressing stormwater issues.

WHAT IF YOU NEED SANDBAGS?
In an effort to assist Los Angeles residents with extreme storm needs, the Los Angeles Fire Department is making empty sandbags available at every Neighborhood Fire Station in the City of Los Angeles.

Please click on the link below to learn more on how to fill and place sanbags.
LAFD Provides Sandbags for Homeowners and Residents

To find the Los Angeles Fire Department station nearest you, call the City's 3-1-1 Ambassadors at any hour. They will be pleased to direct you to the closest facility.

TIPS FOR PERSONAL SAFETY DURING A FLOOD:
*Avoid the urge to sightsee. Remind all household members not to play or linger near flood control channels and storm drains.
*Do not walk through flowing water. Drowning is the number-one cause of flood deaths, mostly during flash floods. Currents can be deceptive; six inches of moving water can knock you off your feet.
*Do not drive through a flooded area. More people drown in their car than anywhere else. Do not drive around road barriers; the road or bridge may be washed out.
*Stay away from power lines and electrical wires. The number-two flood killer after drowning is electrocution. Electrical currents can travel through water.
*Report downed power lines in the City of Los Angeles to the Department of Water and Power (800-DIAL-DWP) or emergency officials.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU FALL IN MOVING WATER?
*Avoid getting into this dangerous situation.
*Remain calm. Don't waste energy yelling for help after someone has spotted you.
*Get ready to be rescued.
*Try to float on your back with your legs straight and your feet pointed downstream.
*Use your legs to shove yourself away from obstructions.
*Keep your head up so that you can see where you are going.
*Watch for obstacles and debris! If a tree or other stationary object is blocking the channel, forcing water over it, try to flip over on your stomach and approach the obstacle head-on, crawling over the top of it.
*Most victims in swift water die when they get pinned against obstacles, or get trapped in submerged debris and vegetation.

WHAT IF YOU SEE SOMEONE FALL INTO MOVING WATER?
*Do not go into the water after the victim.
*Do not try to pull the victim out with your hands, rope, or similar device. Do not attach anything to yourself and toss it to a victim in the water. The force of the current will pull you in.
*If possible, throw a floatation device to the victim, such as a boogie board, styrofoam ice chest, basketball, or other unattached object.
*Immediately call 9-1-1.
*Tell the 9-1-1 operator that someone fell into the channel and is being swept downstream. Say that swift water rescue teams need to respond.
*Give accurate information about where and when you saw the victim and what the victim was wearing.
*Though members of your Los Angeles Fire Department are specially trained and equipped to respond to water rescues, not every victim survives. We therefore remind you that when it comes to swift moving water: 'Stay Away and Stay Alive!'

WHAT IF YOU WITNESS STORM DAMAGE?
City of Los Angeles residents should call 3-1-1 or (866)4-LACITY to report potholes, downed street trees, inoperative traffic signals, clogged street drains and any storm-related property damage requiring an inspection or action by City of Los Angeles officials.WHAT IF YOU EXPERIENCE STORM DAMAGE?

Submitted by Brian Humphrey
Los Angeles Fire Department

Major Emergency Brush Fire Scorches 20 Acres

On Sunday, October 11, 2009 at 4:16 PM, 14 Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, 3 LAFD Rescue Ambulances, 3 Helicopters, 4 Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams, 1 Division Chief Officer Command Team, 1 Rehab Air Tender, 1 Park Ranger Water Tender and 1 Helicopter along with 2 Hand Crews from Los Angeles County Fire Department under the direction of Battalion Chief Brian Cummings responded to a Major Emergency Brush Fire at 1202 West Anaheim Street in Harbor City.

Light Force 85 arrived and found two acres of light to medium brush burning in Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park, just North of Anaheim Street and West of Vermont Avenue. Wind at approximately eight mph pushed the flames Eastward along the South side of Los Angeles Harbor College, toward the 110 freeway.

Firefighters quickly deployed hand lines trying to anchor the fire along the West flank and work their way North. In addition to the challenge of hilly and at-times unstable terrain, firefighters also had to overcome difficult water access. Water Shuttle Operations were established by strategically placing Fire Engines along Anaheim Street, moving water from the fire hydrants to the firefighters on the hills.

Meanwhile a Heli-Spot was established at The Navy Fuel Depot for water-dropping helicopters to battle the blaze from the air and provide aerial reconnaissance. Heavy smoke and flames continued to travel toward the 110 Freeway thus the Southbound lanes were closed as a precautionary.

Due to the aggressive attack from 92 firefighters, a knockdown was obtained in one hour and 49 minutes at 6:05 PM. Firefighters also received a little help from Mother Nature who kept the Relative Humidity around 60, assisting in holding the blaze to just 20 acres. Hand lines were stretched around the entire perimeter of the burned area and firefighters remained on scene over night to ensure any hot spots would not pose a threat. No structures were damaged and no injuries were reported. The cause is still under investigation.

Submitted by Erik Scott
Los Angeles Fire Department

Firefighters Quickly Tackle Blaze in Hollywood Office Building

On Saturday, October 10, 2009 at 3:14 AM, 15 Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, 4 LAFD Rescue Ambulances, 1 Arson Unit, 2 Urban Search and Rescue Units, 1 Hazardous Materials Team, 2 EMS Battalion Captains, 4 Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams, 1 Division Chief Officer Command Team, under the direction of Assistant Chief Richard Warford responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 5170 Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood.

Firefighters were called to a what appeared to be a two story non-sprinklered commercial building with heavy smoke and no fire visible on the first or second floor. The smoke was originally reported by civilians at a 24 hour Gym next door to the incident.

The first arriving fire crews initiated forcible entry and fire attack. As they took handlines into the structure, they later discovered that the building had a third story in the rear not visible from the front.

Fire attack teams searched for the origin of the smoke and quickly found that the fire had run the walls up to the third floor. Flames extended to the attic, and were now visible to the roof teams cutting ventilation holes above.

The bulk of the blaze was soon discovered there after, as both interior attack teams and roof teams continued a coordinated effort to extinguish the fire. Once the origin was found,108 firefighters made quick work in knocking down the flames in less than one hour, saving a good portion of the building.

The establishment was doing business as a medical supply shop with offices and telemarketing on the above floors.

There were no civilians in the structure at the time, and no firefighters were injured during the emergency operations. Confronted immediately with several people exiting the structure, fire crews made quick entry after hearing reports of possible individuals trapped inside. The first arriving fire crews continued to make an aggressive attack on the blaze, while other crews simultaneous searched for possible victims.

As firefighters took handlines down a hallway on the second floor they found that the buildings fire doors had kept the flames and most of the smoke confined to the one area of the structure. Interior attack teams rescued a family of five who where trapped but sheltered in place on a Balcony. Roof teams quickly cut ventilation holes near the origin of the fire and opened the roof's penthouse doors to rescue one trapped adult male.

The fire was confined to one unit, but several units sustained heavy damage from heat and smoke. The blaze was knocked down in just 33 minutes with 99 firefighters. Maintain a 3-foot 'kid-free' zone around your stove and wear short or close-fitting sleeves when cooking.

Keep hot foods and liquids away from tables and counter edges so they cannot be pulled or knocked over.

Never hold a child in your arms while preparing hot food or drinking a hot beverage.

Use extreme caution with items that get hot such as curling irons, oven, irons, lamps, heaters.

Never leave a child alone in a room with a lit candle, portable heater, lit fireplace or stove, or where a hot appliance might be in use.

Set your hot water temperature no higher than 120 degrees, and install anti-scald valves on shower heads and faucets.

For more information, visit:

www.firepreventionweek.org

Submitted by Brian Humphrey, Spokesman
Los Angeles Fire Department

Firefighters Ask: Is Your Television Secure?

While many parents go to great lengths to keep children from viewing inappropriate television content, few adults realize that "unsecured" televisions and other household items can be a lethal danger.

That's why the Los Angeles Fire Department encourages you to watch this short video from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)...

Thousands of preventable injuries - including more than a dozen deaths, occur each year when children climb, fall against or pull themselves onto "unsecured" furnishings, often in an attempt to access a television or other heavy appliance.

Thankfully, there are simple, low-cost steps that can prevent death and injuries associated with furniture, television and appliance tip-overs:

Furniture should be stable on its own. For added security, anchor dressers, TV stands, bookcases and entertainment units to the floor or attach them securely to a wall.

Place your television on a sturdy, low-rise base. Avoid flimsy shelves. Push the TV as far back as possible.

Place electrical cords out of a child’s reach, and teach kids not to play with them.

Keep remote controls and other attractive items off the TV stand so kids won’t be tempted to grab for them and risk knocking the TV over.

Make sure free-standing ranges and stoves are installed with anti-tip brackets.

Keep children safe by surveying the homes of caretakers and sharing this important information.

We encourage you to listen as CPSC's Nychelle Fleming describes the danger lurking in many "unsecured" homes:

For more information, including a safety alert and flyer, please visit:

www.cpsc.gov

Submitted by Brian Humphrey, Spokesman
Los Angeles Fire Department
