Driving past Council Rock South High School last Saturday, you might think it was just another day. Dozens of students gathered on the overcast morning to practice tennis and softball, while still more were hoping to get one more crack at the SATs before the end of the school year.
But it was a different story on the first floor of the Northampton Township school, as hundreds of volunteers scurried to assemble over 4,000 care packages for the troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Organized by Soldiers for Hope, a non-profit organization whose mission is to give soldiers "a piece of home," the community packing day brought nearly 200 area residents and supporters to the high school to donate and pack everything from razors and toothpaste to granola bars and thank you cards.

"He was a hero in the way he cared for others, he was a hero for his devotion to his mother and his father and last, he is a hero for the sacrifice he made for our nation."
Those were the words echoing through the hallways of Neshaminy High School as Middletown Township Supervisor Chris Thompson reflected on fallen Iraq War soldier Jae Sik Moon.
Moon, a 2003 Neshaminy graduate who was killed in action on Christmas Day in 2006, was remembered by his friend Thompson, along with other friends, family, teachers and area officials at a memorial service on April 14.

Weekend Flooding

Residents in Washington Crossing dodged a bullet over the weekend as the Delaware River failed to crest above the community's 19-foot flood action stage.
While some low-lying areas of River Road (Route 32) in Washington Crossing and Upper Makefield Township were covered by floodwaters, little damage was done to the properties of area residents.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the river stayed between 11 and 12 feet through much of the weekend, cresting at just over 13 feet on Sunday night.
During severe rains on Saturday, portions of Route 532 in Newtown Township, as well as Lower Makefield and Upper Makefield townships saw partial road coverage, making for hazardous driving conditions.
In Middletown Township, a 15-foot stretch of Route 413 near George School reduced the road to one lane, slowing afternoon traffic and further south, waters from Core Creek could be seen approaching the edge of the roadway. By Saturday night, Neshaminy Creek had reportedly crested well above normal levels in Langhorne.

Collection drive pays tribute to Dr. King

Parents and students from the Council Rock community gathered Monday to cap off a month-long collection drive honoring the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Hundreds of students from across Council Rock's high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools gave up their day off to bag and deliver thousands of personal supplies, baby items, and canned goods at Council Rock South High School during the second annual CR Cares Day.
"It shows some dedication," South Principal Al Funk said. "The fact that you get up and give up your day off is very meaningful."

Borough Council Re-Organization

It was a new beginning for Newtown Borough Council on January 7, 2008. Four new Council members, with two returning, make up the Council with three Republicans and three Democrats and a Republican mayor.
Newcomer Robert Walker, Jr. was sworn in by Mayor Glenn Hains at the December 11 meeting since he had been appointed following the resignation of Richard Tomlinson.
The Honorable Cynthia Weaver Rufe of the U.S. District Court of Eastern Pennsylvania conducted the swearing-in ceremonies. Sworn in were Judith S. Musto as Tax Collector, and new Council members: Gerard O'Malley, Michael Sellers, and Julia Woldorf.

First Night 2008

It was a special year for the folks that organize Newtown's New Year's Eve extravaganza known as First Night.
Many of them have been an integral part of the festivities since its humble beginnings in 1998, when several hundred people tentatively purchased buttons and made their way through venues in Newtown Borough and Township, enjoying family-themed entertainment sans alcohol and all the other vices often associated with unruly New Year's Eve parties.
Today, 10 years later, it's not unusual for Newtown First Night to attract somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 spectators, mostly young families who are looking for alternative ways to spend this special evening with their kids. But there was certainly no shortage of teens, pre-teens, and older couples who came to First Night to enjoy good music, tasty food, and exciting fireworks before going home to watch "the ball" drop in Times Square.
