In a recession, advertisers tend to first cut those outlets that they see as “nice to haves.” Many are independents that lack the resources and scale of multi-title publishers.

Amid this climate, urban music magazine Vibe folded at the end of June after its private-equity owner couldn’t refinance its debt. Ebony and Jet’s ad pages plunged 40 percent and 38 percent (respectively) for the first nine months of the year, per Publishers Information Bureau; while parent Johnson Publishing battled reports that Ebony was for sale. And the dropoff in luxury ad spending forced Uptown, a chain of regional magazines aimed at affluent blacks, to scale back its ambitions.

Essence fared relatively well last year—its ad pages declined 11 percent to 1,136, while the fashion/beauty category itself fell 23 percent. But Michelle Ebanks, president, says the title still isn’t getting its due given that black women spend heavily on cosmetics and apparel versus the general market.

“We’re probably getting 30 percent less than what we should be getting in overall advertising when you think about fashion, beauty, food [and] pharmaceutical advertising,” Ebanks said. “There’s not parity based on where the consumer is spending.”

Given black consumers’ spending levels and their expectation for targeted marketing messages, marketers are mistaken if they cut African American–aimed media, she added. “Running in Better Homes and Gardens is not going to show African-American women that marketers value them.”

Not all marketers have cut back on the category. McDonald's hasn’t slashed spending in black-interest print media because, explained Rob Jackson, marketing director for African-American consumer market programs there, “They see us in these publications, which has greater meaning. They speak directly to the consumer in a way that mass-market media don’t.”

African-American publications enjoy a strong loyalty with consumers, which makes them an efficient buy for advertisers wanting to reach them, agreed Stefano Curti, president of Johnson & Johnson beauty care.

H/T Mediaweek

Illustrator: Milton 510 Bowen

I don't know much about this artist... other than he's noice wit it.
Milton 510 Bowen

(if you have more info please share)
UPDATE:

“I think that every painter is more or less obligated to re-enact, very rapidly, the entire history of painting in his or her own development - that is to understand and pass through classicism, the 19th century, the Harlem Renaissance, impressionism, surrealism, and abstraction. Contrary to the myth of the artist as an exceptional being neither parents nor conditioning, I am persuaded that there is a precise theoretical logic in the history of painting.

The most important dimension of painting lives in the zones of silence, emotions, and mystery created by the forms, the lines, the colors, the materials, the brushstroke, and the frailties forged by chance. No one would dare say that a painting by Rembrandt or Monet is not an accumulation of abstract passages even if there is a figure. You need simply observe the picture surface to understand the extent to which, if you isolate any given square centimeter, you are immersed in an abstract canvas.”

-ARTIST STATEMENT

Born and raised in Oakland, California, Bowens is the fifth boy of ten children. He began his formal art training at the Renaissance Art School in Oakland, CA during his junior and senior high school years. On completion of High School, he was awarded a scholarship to attend the California College of Arts and Crafts, but enlisted in the United States Armed Forces and became an Illustrator. He received his Associates Degree in Commercial Art under the Army’s College Education Assistance Program. Bowens continued his education in the Arts, attending both Austin Peay State University, TN and Fayettevile State University, NC while serving his tour of duty in the military. During this time, Bowens’ work was collected by two of the military’s most prestigious museums: the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Museum, Fort Bragg, NC, and the Don F. Pratt Memorial Museum, Fort Campbell, KY.

After serving his tour of duty, Bowens returned to the Bay Area and continued his art training under the mentorship of fine artist David Bradford, Head of the Art Department and lecturer at Laney College, Oakland, CA. Inspired by such greats as Jean Michel Basquiat, Robert Rauschenberg, Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence and Andy Warhol, Bowens changed his focus from illustration to fine art. He has evolved into a significant figure in the Bay Area art scene, not only as an artist, but also as a powerful speaker and art activist. He has consistently worked to “keep art a vital part of public education and a tool to help rebuild self-esteem in youth”, he says, and “to try to bring about a level of civility to a community in need of inspiration.”

Bowens approaches his art with great seriousness. His well-thought out messages, keen observations and biting commentaries are thoroughly explored and meticulously presented, generally in large-formatted and voluminous series. Combining text and images in varying proportions, his mixed media works reveal a sharp intellect and a real-life understanding of life on the streets.

Bowens has been the subject of over twenty solo exhibitions since 1992, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions. His work can be found in numerous public and private collections.

The Soul of Motown: Eine Labelgeschichte (wha??)

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; It's taking place in NYC, actually Manhattan I think, from January 4th to February 26th but there's a special Holiday preview from Dec 21st through the 24th. For those of you that can make it, expect to see amazing artwork depicting Black Superheroes. This appears to be a Marvel event as well as the show will be focusing on artwork from major Black characters of the Marvel universe. There will be original artwork, some previously unpublished, from many well known comic artists. There will also be panels discussing the creation of certain characters as well as "meet the artist" events.

The show is presented and produced by Somos Arte, LLC" The presenting gallery, CCCADI (Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute), is a not for profit cultural organization based in New York City dedicated to promoting and promulgating the cultures of people of African Descent."

I'm lovin' the nostalgia of this piece. Two dials (for hue and brightness) help the painter achieve the exact colour required.

In South Korea, around 180,000 tonnes of cans are produced every year. The recycling rate for these is only around seventy-one per cent. Those that are discarded lead not only to the wastage of metal and an increase of garbage, but also to a greater consumption of raw materials and energy in order to produce more cans.

According to South Korea’s metal can resources society, the country’s use of metal cans is gradually reducing, but the consumption of aluminium cans in particular is increasing due to a greater consumption of beer. Plenty of spray cans are wasted as well, being discarded after a single use. Color Dial Spray aims to reduce their consumption.

Generally, spray cans contain only one colour. If only a small amount of paint is required, there will be considerable wastage. Color Dial Spray is a new type of spray can that contains CMYK colour cartridges in the one can. The user can immediately change the colour by turning the colour dials near the top of the can.

There are two dials: one for hue and one for brightness. These allow for precise mixing of the particular colour desired. The colour cartridges can be refilled many times over. This helps with the reduction of waste. The compact form of Color Dial Spray is convenient and portable.

Beyonce Heat Fragrance Commercial

Mumble uh trynta wanna say somethin' ummmm, mumble, finta say somthin'...mumble, uma gonna, mumble sommo umm ah *pant-pant* Hot! umm... mumble. The one thing I can say is no one is going to out work her! You can never take that away from her. But this commercial/thang here really captures sensuality while short skirting it's way around the sleaze factor. It kinda spells H.O.T. without spending too much time around the H.O. parts. That says a lot in this show-it-all, blow-it all - sex cum sleaze world we live in today. The lighting, atmosphere, soft focus, slinky corridor vamp walk & over-the-head neck rubbing shot all borrows heavily from the George Michael "Freedom" video from back in the day, but who cares. I'm a firm believer in stealing repurposing imagery and ideas for new uses in different contexts. We do it all the time in advertising but some people get all bent out of their own brilliance when they spot it happening. For me it works and Bey is a queen when it comes to studying here image and music history. Like when she killed with the Josephine Baker moves and everyone got pissed saying she was biting Tina Turner. The lady know her shakes. She once again masterfully applies her craft. Sex may sell, but sensuality moves minds and just maybe a whole load of parfum. (That's right I said Par-fum.)

P.S. Is that the same voice over guy from the new Jeep commercials?

Advertising Campaign Inspiration: Josephine Baker

I'd like to see Josephine Baker as the muse for an African American advertising campaign.
