His son, born first, is perfectly healthy, but the doctor immediately recognizes that his daughter has Down syndrome. For motives that he tells himself are good, he makes a split-second decision that will haunt all of their lives forever. He asks his nurse, Caroline, to take the baby away to an institution.

Instead, she disappears into another city to raise the child on her own. Compulsively readable and deeply moving, The Memory Keeper’s Daughter is a brilliantly crafted story of parallel lives, familial secrets, and the redemptive power of love.

Tuesday, May 27th 7:00pm

Concealed…Inside the Enemy by Barbara Kline

South Florida author Barbara Kline will be joining us to discuss the book and her writing process. The book is available at Barnes & Noble and Amazon.com.

About the Book

Concealed...Inside the Enemy is the story of Amirah Hamad, an Arabic reporter, who finds herself trapped amidst the war in Iraq . Narrowly escaping an explosion, she is rescued by Kevin O' Conner, a sergeant in the United States Army. Their love for each other flourishes, even as a trail of danger and betrayal follows them. Forced to flee Iraq , Amirah leaves behind her forbidden love.

Once back home in Amman , Jordan , Amirah is haunted by her past as she endeavors to clear her name. Follow Amirah as she embarks on an incredible journey, which takes place in the deserts of Iraq and in the United States of America .

Tuesday, June 24th 7:00pm

A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers

About the Book

Dave Eggers was only twenty-one when his parents died of cancer within weeks of each other. In the aftermath of their deaths, Eggers became the acting parent of his eight-year-old brother, Toph. A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius is the story of their life together, with Dave's efforts at housekeeping, cooking, and getting Toph to school on time comically at odds with his desire to spend time at bars with friends, to put out a satirical magazine--in short, to live a life suited to a person his own age.

This thoughtful, moving, and at times uproariously funny memoir has been widely hailed as a major literary debut, not least for Eggers' ability to combine rueful humor with unmatched insight into the banality and pathos of contemporary life.

Charlottenoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6857809844231093131.post-90898784518057000942008-03-25T19:00:00.000-07:002008-02-29T09:25:58.126-08:00THE BOOK CLUB IS BACK!!
Hello Everyone,
Great News! The PEARR Bookclub is up and running again. I'd like to invite you all to a new location to discuss the book, hot topics of the day and enjoy a cup of coffee with old and new friends. Americorps Volunteer member Christi Rice will be heading up the book club and she's hoping to have a great turnout for the upcoming date. We hope to see you there!

Book: Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer
Date: Tuesday, March 25th
Time: 7 p.m.Location: BREW Urban Cafe in Victoria Park, 638 N. Federal Hwy
(in the Winn Dixie plaza)

To give you a little information about the book...

"In April 1992 a young man from a well-to-do family hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. His name was Christopher Johnson McCandless. He had given $25,000 in savings to charity, abandoned his car and most of his possessions, burned all the cash in his wallet, and invented a new life for himself. Four months later, his decomposed body was found by a moose hunter. How McCandless came to die is the unforgettable story of Into the Wild.Immediately after graduating from college in 1991, McCandless had roamed through the West and Southwest on a vision quest like those made by his heroes Jack London and John Muir. In the Mojave Desert he abandoned his car, stripped it of its license plates, and burned all of his cash. He would give himself a new name, Alexander Supertramp, and , unencumbered by money and belongings, he would be free to wallow in the raw, unfiltered experiences that nature presented. Craving a blank spot on the map, McCandless simply threw the maps away. Leaving behind his desperate parents and sister, he vanished into the wild.Jon Krakauer constructs a clarifying prism through which he reassembles the disquieting facts of McCandless's short life. Admitting an interest that borders on obsession, he searches for the clues to the dries and desires that propelled McCandless. Digging deeply, he takes an inherently compelling mystery and unravels the larger riddles it holds: the profound pull of the American wilderness on our imagination; the allure of high-risk activities to young men of a certain cast of mind; the complex, charged bond between fathers and sons. When McCandless's innocent mistakes turn out to be irreversible and fatal, he becomes the stuff of tabloid headlines and is dismissed for his naiveté, pretensions, and hubris. He is said to have had a death wish but wanting to die is a very different thing from being compelled to look over the edge. Krakauer brings McCandless's uncompromising pilgrimage out of the shadows, and the peril, adversity , and renunciation sought by this enigmatic young man are illuminated with a rare understanding--and not an ounce of sentimentality. Mesmerizing, heartbreaking, Into the Wild is a tour de force. The power and luminosity of Jon Krakauer's storytelling blaze through every page."

Charlottenoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6857809844231093131.post-53999517369949566922007-10-27T13:05:00.000-07:002007-08-25T13:33:47.610-07:00CDM Second Annual Golf Tournament to Benefit Women In Distress

The CDM Fort Lauderdale office will be hosting their second annual golf tournament this year to benefit Women In Distress. Last year was a great success and we had more than 750 participants- and we hope to make this year even better! Every donation is greatly appreciated and helps make our community a safer place for everyone. Each $100 raised can fund 2 hours of group counseling. $1000 can provide 18 days of safety, counseling, food and clothing to battered women and their children in our shelters. Support our 5K SAFE Walk-Run and join the PEARR team on October 7th and take a step to end domestic violence. Race begins @ 7:30 am and will be located at Markham Park in Sunrise, FL. Any donation you can make toward this worthy cause is greatly appreciated.

PEARRhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12481539399317299108noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6857809844231093131.post-41402213880362836502006-09-28T18:00:00.000-07:002007-02-10T14:31:25.246-08:00Wine Tasting and Networking EventSeptember 28, 2006 from 6:00p-8:00p
Open to PEARR Members and guests

Join us for our kick off first Networking and Wine Tasting event this year at Seventh Street Wine Company in Fort Lauderdale.
