new job!

I've got a new job at a computing company in Manchester, so unfortunately I'll have a lot less time to update this site from now on, barring some vast increase in traffic here. There will still be updates, they will just arrive less frequently than they have done over the past few months.

new website

Just another note to say that I've uploaded a new website to the server for fans of the CRPG Baldur's Gate II. I recently built another site in a similar style detailing Icewind Dale, which was built with the same engine as BG2. Anyway, these sites were a welcome distraction from more serious web work, and another one for the sequel to Icewind Dale is on its way, so have a look if you know the games.

hi all, just a second note to say that the site has now moved servers and there should be no more bandwidth problems. i still havent tested everything thoroughly, so if anyone notices anything id appreciate if you dropped me an email.

hi all, just a quick note to say that the site may be offline for a day or two at some point over the next week. the new icewind dale site i built has been very popular, and this coupled with the philosophy pages site has raised bandwidth usage too much for the current server to take, so im going to have to move again. this time the new hosting company will provide unlimited bandwidth however, so it will all be for the best in the long run.

new host - recreating the site.

hi all,
just a note to say that I've finally moved the site to a new server, and am moving all the old content across now. unfortunately, the move from a windows server to one on linux means I will have to rework the scripting for all the pages that formerly used asp to php, which will take a few days.

from the user's point of view this means that many of the bookmarks or weblinks made to the site will no longer work properly, but its an unavoidable problem. where you may have had a bookmark listed as, for example

http://www.davemckay.co.uk/philosophy/emerson/default.asp

it will now be changed to

http://www.davemckay.co.uk/philosophy/emerson/index.php

anyway, everything should hopefully be back online in a couple of days.

the site may be offline for about a week beginning monday - im changing the hosting package I use from windows to linux, and will have to rewrite all the asp scripts to php accordingly, sorry for any inconvenience.

web servers

it seems the webserver that runs this site (and a couple of others i own with the same company) has been down again today. some time soon im going to have to buy a different server to host the contents of the philosophy pages section, and i need one with support for php forums that allows subfolders on the domain of the form http://subfolder.example.com. if any web developers out there can suggest any reliable uk hosts that aren't too expensive, i'd love to hear from you.

update: problem solved— but, i don't have the time to do any more work on these pages for another month, i'm building another site that has to take top priority.
