There is quite a bit of history to 9-man volleyball and the rules make more sense when you take into account the history of the sport and some of the other rules (when you allow throws, being able to carry the ball becomes quite useful, but for the most part, the game is still "proper" volleyball). I think you have to play 9-man to really appreciate it and I don't think you should be discounting it based on just reading a few things about it.
