CWS Game Watching Party

Postseason Owls Baseball

I've been delinquent in starting my usual Rice Baseball hype and getting things organized for the Owls' postseason run. Things have been looking good so far. They've won 33 of 35 games (by my count), they got through the regionals in 3-straight, and, thanks to Vanderbilt's unimpressive play, the team is the highest remaining seed in the tourney.

Super Regionals start tonight (4pm PT) against the Aggies. TV coverage in recent years generally hasn't been favorable. It looks like we'll share time with the "Battle of the Carolinas" during the game tonight and have ESPNU (generally a premium channel) to ourselves tomorrow. If the game isn't on TV, you can't beat the KTRU online broadcast (ktru.org). There's something to be said for baseball on the radio.

I haven't had much success getting people together for Super Regional games for the past few years (where's the committment?), but if you happen to read this before Saturday's game, call me (650 248 5557) or send me an e-mail (vanv at alumni dot rice dot edu). I'll definitely be somewhere watching the game (maybe Oggi's Del Mar).

By the way, there's a nice story here about the team's reaction to Joe Savery's MLB draft result. This is a team you can root for!

Rice baseball games are taking years off of my life... Up 3-2 with 1 out and runners on first and third, Bryce Cox struck out Miami's two best hitters to close out the game. Unbelievable!

The Owls just need to win one of two games against the winner of tomorrow's OSU/Miami game to reach the best-of-3 championship series. So far so good.

Mercifully, the next game is a little later in the day (6pm PDT) on Wednesday. I will definitely be at Oggi's for that one.

By the way, if you can't watch the remaining games, listening to KTRU's online broadcast (http://bang.rice.edu/) is just as good. Those guys do a great job.

Nice comeback win for the Owls on Saturday. We had a good group at Oggi's for the game.

The team next plays Miami at 4pm (stupid timezones) on Monday. Everyone at the Georgia game agreed that Oggi's was a good place to watch the game, so it will be Rice Baseball Central unless something changes. I'm not sure how many people will be able to make it tomorrow due to the early start time, so post a comment below if you think you'll be there. I won't be able to make it until the last few innings.

We're off to a good start (and Clemson lost today). Go Owls!

The first CWS game (vs. Georgia) is at 11 a.m on Saturday.

The challenge is to find a place to watch the game that is:

a) open at 11 a.m.
b) centrally located (I figure that most people will be coming from Mission Valley, La Jolla/UTC, and the north county coast.

The best spot I've found is Oggi's in Carmel Valley/Del Mar(http://www.oggis.com/Locations/DelMar/DelMarHome.htm).

Please post a comment below if you think you might make it.

Also, I happened to find a Rice Baseball website (http://riceowlsbaseball.blogspot.com) put together by an alum in Houston. There's a lot of great photography.

The Owls are safely through to the CWS after a 9-5 victory over OU this afternoon. Neither pitcher made it out of the first inning, so the game really could have gone either way.

Once the schedule comes out, we can figure out a plan for getting together to watch the games.

This team is a lot of fun to watch. They pounded out 10 runs to take the first game from the Sooners.

Tomorrow's game is at 10 a.m. PDT, and it looks like they have a firm slot on ESPN.

In case you haven't been following the team, top ranked Rice Baseball has been on a tear (13 straight wins and 35 of their last 37), and they are safely through the first round of the postseason. Everything is coming together for the team with Joe Savery gaining strength after an injury. As an added bonus, the #3 'Horns were knocked out of the tourney on their own field.

This upcoming weekend (10th - 12th) will be the first opportunity to see the Owls on the tube. They face Oklahoma at 4 p.m. local time on Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday (I'm not even going to mention the theoretical third game). The games will be aired on ESPN2 or ESPNU (a premium channel).

Given my sparse posting to this site, it's unlikely that anyone is actually reading this, but, just in case, I think this is a great opportunity to get a group together and support the team. For the championship run in '03, a bunch of us watched the games at Yogi's in Cardiff (http://maps.citysearch.com/location/400742). That's my suggestion for game watching unless anyone has another preference (post comments below).

Please forward this information on to any other alums. Also, I wouldn't mind using this opportunity to gauge interest in other alumi events, so post a comment if you'd like to do a happy hour or hike or something every once in a while.

Rice Baseball is back in action, and the team is starting the season on the right foot. As of Feb. 28th, they are in the top spot on the Collegiate Baseball poll with a 10-2 record.

The Owls play Long Beach State, Cal. State Fullerton and USD this season... but all of the games vs. California teams are being played in Texas. It would have been great to get a game close by.

I have posted about Bubba Crosby -- Rice Alum and baseball player -- before. Since his time as star player for the Owls in the late '90s, he has struggled to get a firm foothold in the major leagues. But every once in a while, he makes his presence known on the biggest stage in baseball.

Upcoming events:

September 10th - Rice Owls Football vs. UCLA at the Rose Bowl (currently scheduled game time is 7pm). As of 9 am this morning, there are still tickets available in the Rice section ($32 per ticket; Buy tickets @ http://www.riceowls.com). The Alumni office is hosting a pre-game party at the Brookside Golf Club (close to the Rose Bowl) two hours before kick-off.

It didn't work out in the end, but what a great game. As far as I can tell, only two Rice players who saw action this weekend were Seniors (Adam Rodgers and Clay Reichenbach; and I'm not clear on their eligibility status), so the team is stocked with talent for the future.

Traffic to this website has been pretty strong over the last week, so let me take this opportunity to add a few other unsolicited comments:

* ESPN didn't cooperate in providing us with an opportunity to get together and meet some other S.D. alums. So, we'll have to create our own opportunity. Keep an eye out for a Happy Hour in the next month or so, and please post a comment here if you have a recommendation for a good Happy Hour spot (I'll make the comment posting system a little more straightforward).

* Until this idea flames out completely when we're overrun with spam, YOU can post an item to this website by sending an e-mail to sd-owls dot post at blogger dot com. So, if you want to put together a hike or happy hour or whatever, you can let everyone know in a matter of minutes. Also, I never posted my e-mail address which is wpvanv at yahoo dot com. Work can wait - tune into KTRU (ktru.org) now. The Owls gave up 4 runs in the top of the 8th to trail 6-3 then followed up with 3 runs of their own in the bottom half. Tied ball game going into the 9th. KTRU's feed has dropped out a few times to add to the drama.

HUGE Rice win today, 9-5 over top seeded Tulane. The Owls insist on making it interesting (i.e. gut-wrenching), but they come through in the end.

Game 2 is at 10am tomorrow. It's up against the Texas/Miss. game for ESPN coverage. It looks more likely that Rice vs. Tulane will be the featured game tomorrow, but who knows.

There's still no guarantee that a Rice game will be on T.V. this weekend, but there are several slots that look promising (10 a.m. starts on Sat. and Sun.). I think that I'll wait until game time and head over to Yogi's if we're on. Hope to see a few fans there. Otherwise, it's krtu.org and ncaasports.com.

We'll do something more organized for the World Series next week.

It's not clear yet what the TV schedule for this weekend's games will be. I have seen conflicting reports. If there is coverage of the games, I would suggest Yogi's in Cardiff as the place to get together and watch the game(s)(Yogi's served as Rice Baseball Central during the '03 Championship run).

The Owls beat LSU 5-4 this afternoon to advance to the Super Regionals. As far as I can tell, they will face either Tulane or Alabama in a three game series this weekend.

Speaking of Rice Owls sports, the football team is playing UCLA at the Rose Bowl in September, and there are plans in the works for a few alumni events surrounding the game. Keep an eye out for future announcements.
