Award-winning storyteller Ira Glass, host of 'This American Life' NPR and PBS, held a sold-out audience at the Pageant Theater spellbound last Saturday night.
The event was a benefit for the non-profit Prison Performing Arts, an organization that works with prison inmates to put on productions of Shakespeare's plays, as a form of rehabilitation. The productions are prepared over several years and are staged in prison.
An episode of 'This American Life,' titled 'Act V,' about Prison Performing Arts' preparations for a production of Act V of 'Hamlet' by inmates of the Missouri Eastern Correctional Center in Pacific, Mo., ran in 2002. The show has been a fan favorite.
Ira Glass is a storyteller, but a teller of true stories, often with an unexpected twist.

I've been getting social security since I was 62 and I have not heard of anything like this before,' Adkins said. 'Give me your phone number so I can call social security and if this is legitimate I'll let you know. They hung up.'After the phone call ended, he contacted the Department of Social Security.'They (social security) said it has nothing to do with social security and it was a scam,' Adkins said. 'They suggested that I contact the state police and my bank.'He called police and went to his bank to put an alert on his checking account.The bank assured him the debit would not go through on his account.'If anything comes through, the teller at the bank said they would let me know,' he said. 'They put a red alert on my account and they are watching it closely. Whenever someone tries to debit the $277 out of my account, they would try to get as much information about them as they can.'Then the bank would contact him with that information about the person(s) involved. Now he must wait for the debit to attempt to go through. When it does he'll take the information the bank gets from the transaction and report it to the police.'It is a scam that is targeting people who are age 65 and older and who are drawing social security,' Adkins said.He has a piece of advice for his fellow senior citizens concerning giving personal information on the phone.'I would tell the caller that I was going to contact the social security department and the state police,' he said

CARROLLWOOD - A Tampa man is behind bars, accused of robbing a bank and stabbing a doctor in a nearby office while trying to get away.
It was just before 8 a.m., deputies say, when employees discovered Kenneth Robinson inside the Mercantile Bank branch on North Dale Mabry. Robinson, who had apparently broken into the bank overnight, allegedly confronted a teller at gunpoint and demanded cash before taking off on foot.
Robinson ran to a nearby chiropractic office and demanded car keys from patient Marilyn Yarbrough, according to deputies. He then stabbed the doctor before taking off in Yarbrough's Lexus

shall there be an amendment to the colorado constitution concerning voter-approved revisions to limited gaming, and, in connection therewith, allowing the local voters in central city, black hawk, and cripple creek to extend casino hours of operation, approved games to include roulette and craps or both, and maximum single bets up to $100; adjusting distributions to current gaming fund recipients for growth in gaming tax revenue due to voter-approved revisions in gaming; distributing 78 percent of the remaining gaming tax revenue from this amendment for student financial aid and classroom instruction at community colleges according to the proportion of their respective student enrollments, and 22 percent for local gaming impacts in gilpin and teller counties and the cities of central city, black hawk, and cripple creek according to the proportion of increased tax revenue from voter-approved revisions in each city or county; and requiring any increase in gaming taxes from the levels imposed as of july 1, 2008, to be approved at a statewide election, if local voters in one or more cities have approved any revision to limited gaming?
Translation:
Would allow casino towns to vote on whether to increase bet limits to $100 from $5, expand hours of operation and add games.

Fiscal impact:
New gaming revenue resulting from Amendment 50 will depend upon the extent to which the three gaming towns approve new gaming limits. Assuming that all three gaming towns approve the maximum limits, state gaming revenue is expected to increase by about $300 million over the first five years. New gaming revenue will be less if limits are not raised to the maximum amount allowed and/or if all three gaming towns do not change their limits. After paying for the costs to enforce gaming laws related to any changes in the limits, the new
revenue will be transferred or distributed to various funds or programs

NewsChannel 9 crews are back from the scene of a bank robbery in Chattanooga. It happened late this morning at the Suntrust on Brainerd Road.
Chattanooga Police spokesperson Kim Noorbergan says the bank was robbed at 9:51 am by the man pictured... a white man of medium build, short curly grey hair, T-shirt and jeans.
The man walked in and asked a teller for $2,000. He told the teller no one would get hurt if everyone complied. After getting the cash, the man fled on foot. They don't know if he was armed or not

WINDHAM Police are searching for a man who robbed Citizens Bank this morning on Indian Rock Road.
The robber, described as a white man in his mid-20s, did not show a weapon when he demanded cash from a teller.
Only one teller knew there was a robbery going on. She was understandably shaken up, said Officer Carl Wagner. She acted according to her training.
He described her as composed and good witness

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Albany police have made an arrest in connection with a bank robbery on Central Avenue.

Jeffrey Petty, 38, of Schenectady is accused of robbing the Trustco Bank at 163 Central Avenue Monday morning.

Police said he handed the teller a note implying he had a gun and made off with an undisclosed amount of money.

Kevin Pinto, 37, made a court appearance Monday and is scheduled to return Wednesday to enter a plea, the Toronto Sun said.
Police said Pinto went to a downtown police station with a lawyer Friday and surrendered, hours after police released high-quality bank security images taken during a recent robbery to television and newspaper media.
Pinto works as vice president of compliance at the investment firm Paradigm Capital, which Detective Al Phillips told the Toronto Star was a real break from the norm.
'The last thing you expect in a bank robber is somebody from that community, who works in banking,' he said.
The 26 robberies began in 2003 and spread from Toronto. Police dubbed the thief the 'Exchange Bandit' because in each instance the robber started talking to the teller about exchange rates for U.S. currency before passing the hold-up note, the report said.

Arlington County police have released surveillance pictures of a man they say robbed the Chevy Chase Bank branch at the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City on Monday.
Police say the robber walked into the bank about 2 p.m. and handed the teller a note demanding money.The robber received an undisclosed amount of cash from the teller and fled on foot, police said.
The suspect was described as an African American male in his early 20's, 5'8 , and approximately 160 lbs. The suspect had dreadlocks and a goatee, police said.
He was last seen wearing a black skull cap, black rimmed glasses, a black t-shirt and blue jeans, according to investigators.
Anyone who has information about this robbery is asked to call the Arlington County Police Department at 703 558-2222, or Detective Sean Bryson at (703) 228-4195

Chattanooga police and the FBI are investigating a bank robbery that occurred shortly before 10 oclock this morning at SunTrust Bank at 3535 Brainerd Road.
Police said a man entered the bank, walked up to a teller and asked her for $2,000 in cash in $20 bills.
The man said that if the teller complied there would be no trouble and no one would get hurt, said Chattanooga Police Department spokeswoman Sgt. Jerry Weary.
The teller gave the man the money and he left the bank driving away in what police believe is a Red Ford Taurus.
Police are still on the scene dusting for fingerprints and looking for evidence.
They are searching for a black man wearing dark jeans and a dark jacket.

He does not seek to organize their defeat by gathering a broad united front against their assaults on democratic rights, science, and secularism; for Black, the Falwells and the Robertsons are too comical, too absurd, beyond the pale, and hence ridiculous.

But considering the price of gas these days, not to mention the fact that my posterior was starting to take up more real estate on my car seat from all that driving-thru, I decided I should probably spend some more time walking. The next day as I walked my daughter to school, a neighbor passed by and honked at me. 'Is your car in for repairs,' she asked through her half-open window. 'No, we just decided to walk,' I responded. She gave me a confused look and drove away. Emboldened, I walked to the bank and went inside to the teller to make a deposit. If you wouldn t accept it from a recording you shouldn t accept it from someone asking for your vote to be a heartbeat away from the most powerful position in the world.

Jennifer Hinton, a bank teller at the Amanda branch of Kingston National Bank, won the pie and set a record for the night - $160.
Hinton ended up spending a total of $285 on three dishes. She said she knew the whole time she'd walk away with the pies because they were baked by customers of her bank.
'We knew they were going to be here so we wanted to come and support them,' she said.
