Alternate Caps: World Series Game 6 If Necessary Edition

If you are reading this that means that either
a) there is a Game 6 tonight or
b) the guy Dan who is supposed to be minding the blog while I am away is being a slacker.

This "3930" New Era hat is nice enough....but like many of the 2009 3930's it has that annoying line on the side.

Speaking of lines on the side...this cap is a "women's" cap. I suppose women like lines. Just get a regular hat.

Odd color scheme. You can't where this one during the series if you are a Phils fan.

This barely qualifies as a Yankees anything. It looks like a made up cap they sell to the tourists. Maybe if you came from Japan to watch Game 6 but that's it. Pass.

Should I Take My Kid To Giants Stadium?

So here's the question: Should I somehow finagle tickets to a Giants game and take my kid to a Giants game.

He's six. He calls himself a "Giants fan" but doesn't do anything about that such as watch them. It's the last year of Giants Stadium.

I took him to Shea and Yankee so he wouldn't yell at me when he's 30.

Is Giants Stadium a must-see? There's nothing really remarkable about it. There's nothing to show him if we go....or is the idea of "I went with dad to the old Giants Stadium" going to mean something some day?

What Can The USFL Teach Us? (Link)

I didn't get to watch the ESPN 30 on 30 documentary about the USFL yet, but I really liked that league back in the day. I think it was just about a year or two early. If it had been around for the modern style ESPN (not the one that showed you Aussie Football and lumberjack races) it would have made it. They should never have gone to the fall (cough, UFL, cough). Between the XFL and the UFL bombs it will be a long long time before someone starts spring football over here. Better chance of an NFL team in London or a Premier league team in New York (not sure how international soccer works).

Anyways, here's a cool article I saw on the internet called What Can The USFL Teach Us (here's an excerpt.)

the USFL is a great case study.

Advantages:
*Spring season
*NFL-quality talent

Disadvantages:
*Costs, costs, costs
*Donald Trump

The spring season was key -- play where they ain't. The USFL correctly anticipated that NFL fans suffered withdrawal in the spring, waiting for the next season.

Question - Is there any talk about a Metrorail stop being constructed at stadium? Civilized cities (NY, Boston, Chicago, DC) have trains going right to stadiums. Or is part of the financing for this making each of us pay $20 to park?

Alternate Caps: Japan Series Edition

The Giants are playing the Fighters in the Japan Series. We look at their alternate caps.

First, let's educate ourselves on the basic look. Do the Giants always have that orange on the face of the brim?

I think the Fighters (or inaccurately the "Ham Fighters" as I started calling them in 5th grade) lose this battle

Hmmm....I guess if you are a kid I wouldn't mock you. If you were a 40 year old guy, probably. At least it maintains the team's colors, so even in Japan there is Uniform Unanimity.

Our last cap is a 1982 Ham Fighters throwback. Pretty ugly. Giants take the battle of the Japan alternate caps. You say this was a short battle? If you can find alternate Japan league caps send them my way. I don't think New Era has discovered Japan yet.

Ugh. What are you doing even considering purchasing this cap? There is nothing redeeming about this earflap variant,and if that's cold just wear a stocking cap. Might be a nice gift for Charlie Samuels to wear while raking leaves.

Pictures From Yankee Stadium At Game 1 Of The World Series (Part 2)

One of the nice things about my trip to Fake New Yankee Stadium is that my seat had a TV above me...and I was able to capture a picture of Scoreboard Tara. Tara does some pre-game stuff and well I'm not sure exactly how she got the gig.

Mrs. Mets Police's pink camera doesn't zoom too well...somewhere in there are Yogi and Michelle Obama. The Yankees are the best at ceremonies. Remember the 2008 Shea Opener's high school band?

This one is a little sharper. Nice seats, right?

This is outside on 161st at the unimpressive Babe Ruth plaza. The Babe deserves better.

Alternate New York Mets Caps Day 19

And our 19th alternate New York Mets cap is when I finally snap. This is a New Era 5950 New York Mets (BLK/ORNG). Of course it is!

I feel like I have seen this design somewhere before. What an interesting licensed New York Mets product this is. Perhaps they should wear something like this on a throwback day...but what would it be throwing back to? The Dodgers never wore anything like this.

It seems so familiar, I just can't place this.

This cap on the left is a 1951 New York Giants hat. It is completely different. It has an orange button on top.

Alternate Caps: World Series Game 5 Edition

See this cap? Let me tell you the type of person that wears this kind of cap....

These kind of guys do. My problem with these gentlemen? They helped themselves to handicapped seats for Game 1 of the World Series.

The rest of the section was filled with folks in wheelchairs...but these two had no noticeable reason to be there other than they beat Ticketmaster's flawed system.

I respect Yankees fan Mr. Sunshine who was offered seats in this area for Game 1 and threw them back because he knew that it wasn't right.

Anyways, back to caps. Today's theme is ugly.

Why? Maybe you are a fan of the Gorton Fisherman era Islanders and the Yankees?

Apparently there is a cap style I just don't like or understand.

Good luck to you guys. I hope you never actually have a need to sit in handicapped seats and hope you enjoyed the game.

Another "the Yankees bought...." article. Funny how the Mets are unable to buy one.

New York's whopping $201 million payroll topped the league this season: 25 percent more than the next biggest, the cross-town Mets; 60 percent more than its closest A.L. rival, the Red Sox; and almost 80 percent more than its World Series opponent, the Phillies. Spending far more bucks while generating more bang from those bucks may be the recipe for more than a championship — for another Yankee dynasty.

At least, that is, until the next sabermetrics whiz kid comes along and figures out another, new way to level the playing field.

World Series: Something Is Broken

I know I'm going to be left out here in the forest yelling all by
myself (well maybe Mushnick is out here) but I'm gonna yell anyway.

I hope my couch is enjoying these games because I'm not. I heard the
score this morning and was stunned. The last thing I remember was CC
coming out after Utley's home run.

My son's recollection of the series? I think he saw an inning of game
2.

I understand TV doesn't want to play a day game. Would 6 or 7pm kill
them? The Super Bowl seems to do just fine starting at 6:20. Let
CBS have the NFL doubleheader during the series.

I will keep pointing out that more than half the population of the US
lives in the eastern time zone.

Another problem is the glacial pace of these games. I don't know how
many extra minutes of commercials are crammed in but it feels
endless. I actually start watching the game on the DVR about 20
minutes after the first pitch so I can watch the first 5 or so innings
at a nice pace....so all those advertisers are wasting their money
anyway. Thank you 30 second skip.

Have you noticed all the local TV channels now start their newscasts
at 5am? People are getting up earlier. You have to sleep sometime,
and for me that seems to be in the 8th inning.

No game on a Friday. Late start on a Sunday. My passion for this
series is now way down, to Monday Night Football levels. MNF long
ago conditioned me to turn off the TV at halftime, maybe I will plan
on 4 and done tonight.

Tonight is November 2nd by the way. Is this what baseball wants?

I like Rollins. I know people get stressed by some of my opinions about shortstops, but Rollins could play on my team any day. Jimmy the Met Fan left off Jayson Werth who looks like a surfer dude on your softball team....Hey Jason, dude, you're up!!....I love his nonchalant swing.

We can sit here and chant "Phillies suck" all we want, but they have won the east three years in a row. How many times have the Mets done that trick?

I was looking at that lineup last night, plus Cliff Lee....looks like a formidable challenge for the Mets in 2010. How much are tickets again?

Uniwatch continues their Worst Uniform Ever poll. You have to vote for the Mercury Mets. Do it!

Do you think it's beyond the realm of possibility that the Wilpons would move the team to Mercury in the 2020's? I don't. The upcoming 10 years of empty seats at Citi Field might be enough to convince them to look elsewhere, especially if they think they will look snazzy.

Vote! The White Sox shorts are going to be tough to beat, so we need to get the word out.

You can vote for the Gorton's Fisherman in the hockey category, although I had to go Canucks.

I went to Game 1 of the World Series...got super-lucky on Ticketmaster and got in for face value!

My seat was nearby this Sushi stand. Really?

Instead I went over here...but blew this off and went to Nathans. I'd like to thank the mayor for posting calorie counts....I was going to get an order of fries until I saw the 1200+ calories count..which by the way is like getting 6 hot dogs.

I got a beer (small $6) and a dog and still got darn close to $10. Sheesh.

Annoying Strikeout/Firstdown/Phone Number Sponsor

An electronics retailer is sponsoring lots of things with a disctinctive whistle. You may have noticed it after a strikeout at Yankees Stadium (although Mr. Sunshine the Yankees fan says they didn't do it during the World Series), today I hear it when the dopey Jets get a first down, and a sports radio station in town is allowing it to sponsor the phone number.

It does not make me want to visit their store, and in fact sometimes makes me switch to the other sports radio station.

That being said, if someone offered me some bucks to make you sit through an annoying whistle I would take their cash in a second. What a horrible world we live in.

A throwback edition of alternate caps. These from the 1910 Yankees. I never knew they wore red, always assumed it was white in those black and white photos. I wonder if we'll see a 100th anniversary of this cap day next season?

Here's the 1934 Phils. If you wore this to a game I would think it was cool, however if I saw you on the street I wouldn't know this has anything to do with the Phillies so you would not get props.

This one from 1912. Not bad. I wouldn't heckle you if you wore this.

1946 Phils. Not bad at all. Wearable.

Baseball Needs To Start Playoffs and World Series Earlier

I woke up this morning and Junior asked who won the game. "ummm....Yankees."

"What was the score?" I had no idea.

I vaguely remember Joe Buck saying something about using a Hughes in a non-save situation and I vaguely think it was 1:40am.

Poor Junior, he spent the entire day looking forward to watching the game but I had to chase him before first pitch.

I know Fox doesn't control the weather. They do control this "start before 8" spin which is allegedly 7:57 but why don't you stare at your watch tomorrow night at 7:56:59 and see what's on TV. I did hear Buck and McCarver float a fairly strong "how late are we gonna start?" vibe around 9pm.

Tonight the game starts at 8:20 because.....it's a school night? Because someone out ther actually needs football highlights after watching 7 hours of football? In the 21st century are you really getting your scores from Terry Bradshaw?

The Yankees might wind up playing 11 games in about 30 days. That's not baseball. My kid has seen about two innings. His dad has seen about 60% of them, usually the first 6 and then the last out (Joe Buck must raise his voice).

Is this why we follow the sport? Is the idea to have fans falling asleep during the biggest moments?

So look, I understand that the Browns are horrible. However, these team protests never work. Also, Browns fans should just shut up and be happy that they have a team at all. If I were the owner and you pulled a protest I would move the team to Baltimore just to spite you.
