The Marianas Amateur Radio Club will be holding its 2009 Fourth of July Potluck at KSTO studio on Nimitz Hill in Guam.

As always this is a perfect opportunity for old and new club members to meet, greet and share in the fun of ham radio. Family and friends are invited to attend.

The food is expected to be ready around 4 PM.

To help with the planning, please let Amy know how many will attend, and what you will be bringing.

Of course, if you won't know until Saturday morning, please join us anyway. Please note, our gathering on the 4th will take the place of the regular July meeting.

June and July Club events

The Marianas Amateur Radio Club has many activities planned for
June and a change for the July meeting.

Saturday June 13. You are invited to attend an informal Ham Radio
lunch at the VIP house. They have very good and reasonably priced
Chinese food. Each person needs to pay their own bill. Your
choice of Prix Fixe lunch is $7.99 plus a 10% tip.

The VIP House is located at 1000 Pale San Vitores, Tumon Bay.
This is above the Subway. There is parking behind the building on
the same level as the restaurant.

Saturday June 20 and 27. We will have antenna building parties
the last 2 Saturdays of June. Everyone is invited even if you
have never built an antenna. This will be a lot of fun and a
great way to learn more about antennas. This will be at the Club
meeting place, the KSTO studio on Nimitz Hill. Start time is
10:00 a.m.

The July meeting will NOT be on the first Tuesday. At the last
meeting the members voted to have a Pot Luck 4th of July Picnic
on Saturday, July 4th. We have done this in recent years for the
4th of July as well as the Christmas Party and the attendees give
rave revues.

Activities on the 4th will start at 2:00 p.m. when the Club HF
station will be fired up. The Pot Luck Picnic will start at 4:00
p.m. while radio operations continue.

As with all Club activities, you don’t need to be a Club member
or a Ham to join us for the fun! Everyone is welcome, please come.

One last reminder, please join us for the Monday Night Net. This
starts at 7:00 p.m. local time which is 0900 Zulu. The repeater
frequency is 146.91 MHz, or if you are not on Guam, use IRLP
Reflector 9254.

March Meeting Notice

This Tuesday, March third is the monthly meeting of the Marianas Amateur Radio Club. The usual time and the usual place, 7:00 p.m. at the KSTO studio on Nimitz Hill, about 1 mile south of Top ‘O the Mar.

There is plenty of parking in the rear, lower level and the entrance to the meeting is on the South side of the building.

Everybody is invited, you don’t need to have a Ham license to enjoy these meetings.

As a reminder, I will be ordering books, audio and software courses from W5YI next week. Please look at www.w5yi.org and fill your Ham Radio learning needs. You gain because we will deliver the materials to you at retail price with no additional charges for shipping. The Club gains because we make a small profit.

February MARC meeting and testing

This coming Tuesday, 3 February is the monthly meeting of the Marianas
Amateur Radio Club. Start time is 7:00 p.m. at the KSTO studio on Nimitz
Hill. This is about 1 mile south of the Top ‘O the Mar on the opposite
side of the road. There is plenty of parking behind the building and the
entrance is on the South side of the building.

The special topic will be the conversion to Digital Broadcast TV. We
will answer all your questions and demonstrate how to connect a digital
converter box to your TV. Please bring in your converter box and we will
show you how to hook it up.

This is a great general subject and everyone is invited whether your have
a Ham License or not.

There will also be a test session before the meeting. If you are ready to
take your first exam or upgrade an existing license this is your opportunity.

The test will begin at 5:30. Please bring a picture ID. If this is your
first Amateur license please bring your Social Security Number. If you
are upgrading an existing license, please bring a photocopy of your license
to give to the examiners. The test fee is $15.00, cash or check please
(we are not equipped to accept credit cards.)

MARC's Dinner with Carter Davis details

Everybody is invited to join the informal dinner meeting this
Friday, January 30 at 7:00 p.m. The venue is the VIP House,
1000 Pale San Vitores, Tumon Bay. This is located above the
Subway and is easy to find.

The guest of honor is Carter Davis who will tell us about the
IRLP node in Saipan as well as the Guam node and Ham Radio
in general.

The VIP House has quality Chinese food at reasonable prices.
Of course, each person is expected to pay their own bill.

A quick reminder that the next Club meeting will be on Tuesday, 3 February

the night as we want to show as many different models as possible.

First MARC meeting of 2009!

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Our first meeting of the Marianas Amateur Radio Club will be on
Tuesday, 6 January starting at 7:00 p.m. The usual meeting place,
the KSTO Studio – about 1 mile South of the Top ‘O the Mar.
There is plenty of parking on the lower level, near the meeting
entrance.

We will be talking about Ham Radio, communications, emergency
preparedness, short wave listening, electronics and the recent
activities of our members.

As always, everybody is invited. Bring your friends, family,
co-workers, neighbors and strangers off the street. In
particular, I want to invite young people, many Hams earned
their license before their 10th birthday.

Finally, I want to thank the MARC membership for their trust in
re-electing me and the other Club Officers, Tim McDow NH2CV,
Mike Manafo K3UOC and Rich Ortloff KE6DUC. We look forward to
making your Ham Radio Club both interesting and useful to you.

One last note, at this time I am scheduled to work Tuesday night.
Unless I can arrange a trade, I will see you at the next MARC
meeting!

November Meeting and Test

There will be an Amateur Radio Test Session on Tuesday, 4 November.
The test session will start at 6:00 p.m. at the KSTO studio on Nimitz Hill, about 1 mile South of the Top ‘O the Mar.

The test fee is $14.00, cash or check (we are not able to accept credit cards.) Please bring a picture ID. If this is your first license, please bring your Social Security Number. If this is an upgrade to a current license, please bring a photo copy of your license to give to the examiners.

The regular Marianas Amateur Radio Club meeting will start at 7:00 p.m. and as always, everyone is invited.

October meeting...wow October!

This Tuesday is the monthly meeting of the Marianas Amateur Radio Club. The usual time and the usual place, 7:00 p.m. at the KSTO studio on Nimitz Hill, about 1 mile south of Top ‘O the Mar. There is plenty of parking behind the building and the entrance is on the lower south side of the building.

We will be talking about all things radio and electronics and communications. Everybody is invited whether you have a Ham Radio license of not.

We will be talking about the Technician Class coming up. This will be held at the Salvation Army office in Tyan on October 23 and 24, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The test will be held starting at 3:30 October 24.

At this time we have 14 Salvation Army personal attending the class and there is room for more. If you are interested please reply to this E-mail at wh2m@hotmail.com or contact any other Club Officer.

There is no charge to attend the class. We will be studying from the Gordon West Technician Class manual which has helped thousands of people earn their Ham License. While it is not required to buy the book, it will help you greatly to buy and read it before attending the class.

The test session fee is $14.00 (cash or check, we are unable to accept credit cards.) You may take a test even if you don’t take the class and we will be able to test for any of the 3 levels of Amateur Radio licenses.

Those who ordered books, they will be available for pick up at the meeting. Again, cash or check please.

Used HF Gear for sale

I have some new HF gear coming from Stateside so I am looking to sell some of my old gear here to make room for the new. This is what I have for sale at the St. John's club station:

- IC-765 HF Transceiver - a fine ICOM radio that I purchased new back when I was in Saudi,

- Heath SB-1000 HF Linear Amp that covers 10-160 M including the WARC bands,

- Dentron HF Super Tuner - handles high power with a roller inductor that will match almost any RF output to any radio,

- Ameritron ARB-704 universal radio amplifier interface - needed to supply proper voltage to the amp relay from the solid state transceiver.

If any of the above strikes your fancy, drop me a line and we'll talk turkey.

In anticipation of teaching a Technician license class in October for the
Salvation Army and VOAD, I am planning to order books and other
teaching materials from W5YI, the provider of the Gordon West Ham
Radio manuals.

If you have any personal needs for materials from W5YI I invite you
to add your needs to this order. The Club is able to order at a
discount and make a small profit by selling at retail price to our Club
members and anyone interested in Amateur Radio. While this does
not give you a direct discount, the Club is able to absorb the shipping
cost (while still making a profit) saving you the cost of shipping.

Jingle all the way...to the MARC Christmas Party!

This is a reminder that the Marianas Amateur Radio Club will be holding its annual Christmas Party on Friday, December 14th. The fun begins at 6 o'clock p.m. The location is our the regular meeting site at the KSTO studio.

The menu is open. We already have someone bringing a turkey. Others are bringing veggies, rolls, pie and a fruit salad. So you see we still have lots of room for your favorite items. If you would like to grill, please contact Ed Poppe at AH2L@arl.net to make arrangements.

Along with the good food and good company we will also have a gift exchange with a limit of $15.00.

It's hard to believe that the holiday season is upon us again. How time flies! Please set aside Friday, December 14th for the Marianas Amateur Radio Club Annual Christmas Party. The fun begins at 6 o'clock p.m.!
This year, we will be celebrating with a potluck at the regular meeting site at the KSTO studio. We had such a good time last July that we decided to do it again!

October Meeting Notice

This Tuesday, October 2, is the monthly meeting of the Marianas Amateur Radio Club. Start time is 7:00 p.m. at the KSTO studio on Nimitz Hill, about 1 mile south of the Top 'O the Mar. There is plenty of parking in the rear of the building and the meeting entrance is from the parking lot.

Everyone is invited whether you have a Ham Radio license or not. Please bring your friends, family, neighbors, coworkers or strangers off the street. Young, old, middle age, single or married. All will be made to feel welcome.

We will be talking about the proposed program to loan radios to licensed Hams who lack equipment. The Club will acquire radios and loan them to that Hams (particularly new Hams) can gain enough experience and familiarity to become comfortable buying their own equipment.
We will also discuss the annual Club Christmas Party as well as our activities with radio, emergency preparedness, operating practices and the ever popular Tech Lesson.

Also, it there is interest, I will give a brief travelogue about my recent trip to Switzerland. Since this is not Ham Radio, it will start after the Club meeting has ended.

MARC Testing Notice

The Marianas Amateur Radio Club will sponsor an Amateur Radio Test Session this Friday, September 21. The location is the KSTO studio on Nimitz Hill, about 1 mile south of Top 'O the Mar. There is plenty of parking in the rear. The test will start at 4:00 p.m. and conclude at about 6:00 p.m.

All 3 test elements will be offered - Technician, General and Amateur Extra.

All applicants must bring a photo ID and $14.00 cash or check.

If you are testing for your first Ham license, you need to provide your Social Security Number.
If you are upgrading your current license, please bring a photo copy to give to the examiners. If your license does not have an FCC issued FRN number you must also provide your Social Security Number.
