Shaw Blvd., Mandaluyong City</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">When photographer Peter Bialobrzeski travelled through Southeast Asia in 2007/8, he combined his own photographic investigations with workshops for young talents in six foremost cities of the region: Jakarta, Hanoi, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Manila and Singapore. What came out of the workshops was a multifaceted kaleidoscope of these six metropoles, culminating in the exhibition "Mapping Invisible Cities."</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">"Mapping Invisible Cities" features the works of 27 photographers, including 8 (Cathy Quiogue, Cris Sevilla, <a href="http://dennisrito.blogspot.com/">Dennis Rito</a>, Estan Cabigas, Gigie cruz, Kidlat De Guia, &amp; Tammy David) from the Philippines. All were completed during <a href="http://dennisrito.blogspot.com/2008/02/on-assignment-with-peter-bialobrzeski.html">workshops</a> led by Bialobrzeski in October 2007-March 2008. The diverse themes and approaches in the 105 pieces, in addition to Peter Bialobrzeski's work, are like fragments of the unseen and unnoticed ordinariness hidden in these 6 cities. When these fragments are joined in one single frame, like a map, they begin to show what was formerly invisible.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">In mapping them, these photographers have made their cities more obvious and bring to the surface what we do not (want to see) or notice. Their works act as maps that show the organization of space, movement, and people. Some also show how maps can be tied to the imagination and abstractions. Altogether they serve as valuable insights to and experiences of Southeast Asia's largest cities. They also give audiences the ability to see into the future of Southeast Asian photography.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Exhibition runs until November 7, 2008. The opening reception will be on October 1, 2008 at 6 pm. It kicks off a month of celebration to be followed by the October 16th opening of the SLAB (Silverlens Lab) Gallery, the next space under the Silverlens Group committed to showing painting, drawing, and sculpture, with painter Patricia Eustaquio.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">In The Moro Negatives, Lorenzo returns to the darkroom continuing her multi-negative collages which she began in Isa Lorenzo, 001. This time however, she brings together found negatives of her late father, Luis “Moro” Lorenzo—his life as a young man in the Mindanao of the ‘50s, the architecture of the ‘60s, and the recording of a growing family shuttling between Luzon and Mindanao in the ‘70s—and her own photos of the homes that he built still in existence. Each image brings together circumstances decades apart, and is titled by the year of the Moro Lorenzo negative.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Moro Lorenzo passed away in 1997. In his lifetime, he was a basketball icon, a farmer, a businessman, a patriarch, and a golfer. His passing was the first step in his daughter’s journey into art, a path that was in hindsight bequeathed to her by her father who played the role of designated photographer at every celebration, vacation, and historical event.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Isa Lorenzo (b.1974, Manila) is a graduate of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine. She hung up her stethoscope upon passing the board exams to start her life in art. She finished a Masters Degree in Media Studies and Photography at the Parsons School of Design in New York City and worked at the International Center of Photography in the same city. Since then, she has founded the Silverlens Gallery, the Silverlens Foundation, and SLab. For her own art, she has published two books of her work and has shown in Paris, Brussels, Hong Kong, Shanghai, New York, and soon, Cologne.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">There will be a talk on “Demystifying Mindanao” by publisher and environmentalist Lory Tan on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 3-5 pm and an artist talk by Isa Lorenzo on Saturday Oct. 25, also from 3-5pm. Opening on October 7, 2008, “Old Magic” features a collection of photographs taken with a vintage Polaroid SX-70. Photographers then manipulated each photograph manually using techniques such as tracing with a plastic fork.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">No longer manufactured today, the Polaroid camera used for “Old Magic” is owned by Foto Baryo founder Fernando Afable. Apart from producing his own photographs for the exhibition, Afable shared his beloved camera and Polaroid manipulation techniques with close friends and Foto Baryo volunteers Amor Rodriguez, Cres Yulo, Pinky Urmaza, Tommy Hafalla and Vixienne Cululut.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">With Afable's injunction to “Go out, shoot and enjoy,” these photographers went out to take Polaroid pictures of personal significance, while having fun during every step of the point-and-shoot and scratch-the-surface process. As Rodriguez put it, “I was like a kid with a new toy and I lugged the thing everywhere I went.” Yulo likewise felt “like a child on a “secret mission”—to find a subject matter interesting enough to shoot, and to change it into a whole new image.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">For Urmaza, the photos at “Old Magic” are her “records of trips, both near and far; some are journeys inward, as I discovered more about myself in each shape and colour I have scratched and traced.” For his part, Hafalla sees Polaroids as a method that “gave me a chance to express my frustration to be a painter...I started creating my own painting through a lens... with just a few pieces (that) fulfilled my long-forgotten dream to paint with light.” Cululut, who describes Polaroid manipulation as “giving the picture a Van Gogh-ish look with the use of a stylus,” says her pictures “bear a myriad of emotions, foremost of which is the spirit of generosity shown by friends.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">As the brainchild of <a href="http://cres.multiply.com/photos/album/116">Fernando Afable</a>, Foto Baryo is the result of the dreams and the life's work of a man who worked his way up from humble origins in Tanauan to become Darkroom Manager of the prestigious International Center for Photography (ICP) in New York City. Wishing to nurture a Filipino version of the ICP back home, Afable founded Foto Baryo in order to raise local awareness of the beauty of photography. From the first year of its inception, Foto Baryo has spread the word to over a hundred photo enthusiasts around the country. Since its first landmark exhibition at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), One Workshop Gallery has always supported Foto Baryo and Afable's vision of a community sharing ideas, knowledge, art and culture.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">“Old Magic” by Foto Baryo runs until November 7, 2008 at the One Workshop Gallery, Ground Floor 2241 La Fuerza Plaza II, Don Chino Roces Ave. corner Sabio St., Makati City. Its mission is to encourage the Students and Alumni  to pique their interest in the vast fields of arts and photography. Through this friendly competition, the project aims to jumpstart and develop their hidden talents. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">BACKGROUND: </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Photography was one of the topics taught by Mr. Estanislao Caldez, a professor of Practical Arts, when Marc Aviles studied at San Juan National High School, in the year 1987. He enjoyed the subject because it was fun and creative, and it was 16 years later when he first got his first camera and studied photography again on his own. He started joining photography competitions which helped him exercise his imagination and push his passion. In 2004, he won the “Photographer of the Year" title in Singapore’s leading photography (Photo-i) magazine, 2005 and 2007 Top Ten Photographer of the Year in Federation of Philippine Photographers Foundation. In 2007, he won the “<a href="http://www.popphoto.com/popularphotographyfeatures/4360/2007-photographer-of-the-year-marc-aviles.html">Photographer of the Year</a>”, a worldwide competition held by New York's Popular Photography Magazine. In 2008, he bagged the 1st and 2nd Place for the Landscape/Nature category in the WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers International), judging was held in Santa Monica, California. Now he lives as a professional photographer in California.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">With humble beginnings, Marc Aviles looks back at the time when he first held a camera provided by SJNHS, and thanks the school for planting a seed of inspiration to him.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">"With the help of my fellow alumni at SJNHSAAI, I hope to excite the youth about arts and photography. Tomas instead.  But the fire had been lit: Ernie spent most of his free time at school taking photographs for the Varsitarian, the college newspaper. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Upon graduation, Ernie embarked on a photojournalism career in earnest, first with the Times Journal and later with the Philippine Daily Inquirer where he now heads the photo department.  He has won numerous awards and prizes, among them Kodak Sports Photographer of 1988, Sports Photographer of 2002, and first, second and third prize in the MMDA Photo Contest.   He also teaches Advanced News Photography at the Asian Center for Journalism of the Ateneo de Manila University. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">In his 25 years as a professional photographer, Ernie has covered everything from war and politics to sports and human interest.   But he still hews closely to the time-honored values of old-school photojournalism and the decisive moment: </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">"In photojournalism, the subject is the most important thing," he says "Photography is only a tool. Silverlens Gallery will continue to show photography and new media while the adjacent SLab will be showing painting, drawing, and sculpture. The two spaces will be bridge-linked, the former being a piano warehouse and the latter being a former auditorium.<br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">SLab will have two galleries, a 120 square meter main space for longer curated shows, and the 20 square meter smaller gallery for young artists, for projects the curators are working on, and for collectors and artists consignments. The backroom for both Silverlens and SLab will be actively showing work by all the represented artists. Their artists push the boundaries of their medium and are aggressive in their dialogue with a critical audience. Represented artists include Patricia Eustaquio, Lena Cobangbang, Mariano Ching, Christina Dy, Gary Ross Pastrana, Rachel Rillo, and Isa Lorenzo, among others. They are also actively represented by Silverlens internationally in art fairs and gallery collaborations for their exposure, recall, recognition, and collection.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The inaugural show of SLab is Patricia Eustaquio who will be showing painting and multi-material sculpture. A Magna Cum Laude Graduate of painting from the UP Diliman Fine Arts Program, Eustaquio returns to her core art after years of fashion design. Based on J.S. Bach's Well Tempered Clavier, a body of musical work that uses all 24 keys of the piano, indiscriminate of majors and minors, she creates 12 pieces that are odes to the sublimity of music, but silent. We see shaped canvases filled with feathers and other stilled life, an exquisitely tooled miniature piano in leather, a ceramic violin with a frozen heart.  That the space was formerly a music auditorium is beyond coincidence.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Asked why she joined SLab, Eustaquio narrates, "I wanted to work within the context of a new space and the energy that comes from it.. Of course I also want my works to be part of a wider dialogue, and with the art fairs, SLab is participating in, I feel that I have more of an opportunity to grow while my works are scrutinized by a larger audience."</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">SLab opens at 2320 Pasong Tamo Extension, Makati City in October 2008. Silverlens Gallery will be showing Isa Lorenzo, 003 simultaneously. www.silverlensphoto.com</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">SLab exhibits</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;">2008</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Oct-Nov - Patricia Eustaquio</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Nov-Dec - Bea Valdes</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;">2009</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Jan-Feb - Renato Orara</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Mar-Apr - Christina Dy</div><div style="text-align: justify;">May-Jun - Lena Cobangbang</div>Philippine Photography Scenehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07383260033800102576noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6735704224070279601.post-16101849479929011822008-08-25T21:10:00.000-07:002008-08-25T21:20:27.502-07:00Asian Photography Festivals (2008-2009)<div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;">Singapore International Photography Festival</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;">October 8-31, 2008</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Scheduled to take place from 8 to 31 October 2008, the Singapore International Photography Festival (SIPF) is the first event of its kind in Southeast Asia. What you see is what you get. Or is it?<br /><br />The collection of photography as a contemporary fine art is steadily becoming more important to serious collectors both here and abroad. This talk answers why. And why the thrill of collecting art is all the more intense with the contemporary. The work of Noelle Katigbak Tan, currently in its last editions at Silverlens this month, after 6 years of being shown, is a satisfying sample of deep collecting.<br /><br />A slideshow of important internationally-collected art will be presented, vis a vis Philippine photography. It also answers the whos and hows of photography collection--the artists, print processes, editions, pricing, and provenance.<br /><br />This visual presentation is ideal for individuals with established collections, young collectors, artists, architects, designers, and the curious.<br /><br />Isa Lorenzo is the creative director of Silverlens Gallery which deals with photography, and the soon to open SLab (Silverlens Lab), which will be showing the rest of the contemporary arts. Lorenzo, herself an artist who works with photography, spends her downtime looking at art and carefully building a collection of the contemporary.<br /></div>Dennis S.
