With a combined 43-year history and extensive local affiliate and online networks, the two groups share the belief that emotional and social support is as essential as medical care when there is a cancer diagnosis. This combination would create the largest cancer organization in the US dedicated to empowering individuals and building community in the face of cancer.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6689971646906856362-5890733691420078449?l=www.thewellnesscommunity.org%2Fblogs%2Fkim%2Fdefault.htm'/></div>Kim Thiboldeauxnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6689971646906856362.post-41583996050132697252009-02-20T17:00:00.001-08:002009-02-22T09:09:19.451-08:007-Time Tour de France Champion, Lance Armstrong, Visits The Wellness Community in California<a href="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/Full-Group-Shot-778005.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 141px" alt="" src="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/Full-Group-Shot-777477.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div>On Thursday, February 19, 2009, 7-Time Tour de France Champion and cancer survivor, Lance Armstrong, visited The Wellness Community (TWC) of Paso Robles. He is currently competing in the Amgen Tour of California with Team Astana.<br />During his visit to TWC, Lance spent time with cancer patients and Wellness Community founders and staff and spoke to them about their personal cancer experiences. He also addressed a large crowd of fans who cheered on his efforts both in cycling and the war on cancer.<br />The Wellness Community has been part of the Breakaway from Cancer initiative since its inception. Founded in 2005 by Amgen Inc. as a complementary component to the company’s sponsorship of the Amgen Tour of California, Breakaway from Cancer is a national initiative to increase awareness of the important resources available to cancer patients from prevention to education, and patient care to advocacy and financial support. The Wellness Community is a partner in the Breakaway From Cancer campaign, which is a complementary component of the Tour and is designed to raise awareness of all of the great resources and services that exist for people affected <blockquote></blockquote>by cancer. Other partners include the Prevent Cancer Foundation, the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship and the Patient Advocate Foundation.<br /></div><div> </div><div><a href="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/Lance-and-Kathryn-do-the-winners-salute-reduced-779237.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 133px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 169px" alt="" src="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/Lance-and-Kathryn-do-the-winners-salute-reduced-779234.jpg" border="0" /></a>Yesterday, Valentine's Day, was a very exciting start to the race in Sacramento with Fabian Cancellara of Team Saxo Bank claiming victory in the Prologue. I was recently at the holiday party at our Wellness Community in Philadelphia and was so touched by the joy, the hugs, the warmth, the wonderful spirit. It must be overwhelming to have cancer in the midst of everything else that is going on in the world, yet our folks gather, embrace, laugh and amazingly seem to have things to celebrate and be thankful for. I want to thank you for inspiring us every day to do the work of The Wellness Community. You help us see clearly and appreciate all the joys that life brings.<br /><br />2009 will be a busy and important year - in Washington, DC, in health care, at The Wellness Community. I hope you'll stay in touch, share your stories and continue to inspire and motivate us. Merry, merry! The report states that:<br /><br />"Americans place a high premium on new technologies to solve our health care needs. However, technology alone is not enough. Health is determined not just by biological processes but by people's emotions, behaviors, and social relationships."<br /><br />The Wellness Community has been carrying out this mandate for over 26 years in communities across America and now abroad. We have been providing social and emotional support to tens of thousands of cancer patients to ensure that they have the best possible outcomes - to see to it that they have the tools to learn how to live well with cancer.<br /><br />It is refreshing to see a report like this from a prestigious institution like the IOM which essentially validates our mission and gives us a clear mandate to move forward. You will be seeing many bold initiatives from The Wellness Community in the months ahead around how we plan to implement and institutionalize the recommendations in the report. We take this report seriously and believe that if carefully and properly implemented, it will ensure that the gold standard in care is available to all people affected by cancer.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6689971646906856362-3432373730600607147?l=www.thewellnesscommunity.org%2Fblogs%2Fkim%2Fdefault.htm'/></div>Kim Thiboldeauxnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6689971646906856362.post-20622261028185736292008-02-26T10:48:00.000-08:002008-02-26T11:30:22.710-08:00The Amgen Tour of California Ends in Pasadena!<div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/LR-Balloons-with-Rainbow-712736.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/LR-Balloons-with-Rainbow-712731.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a><br /></div><br />The 2008 Amgen Tour of California came to an incredible end in Pasadena on Sunday! The 135 mile leg, the longest part of the Tour, should have taken the top cyclists 5-6 hours, but instead took nearly 7 hours to complete. <br /><br />Although weather conditions were less than ideal, the people of the San Luis Obispo brought out their ponchos and umbrellas and enjoyed the Lifestyle Festival. TWC's Natalie Haskins had the opportunity to go up on the Finish Line stage and talk to crowds about TWC's free cancer support services for all people affected by cancer.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/ATOC-2008-Stage-3-003-768449.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/ATOC-2008-Stage-3-003-767869.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a></div><br />After many hours of waiting anxiously for the cyclists to come in, Dominique Rollin from Team Toyota-United made history by securing a solo victory! For those of you unfamiliar with the sport of cycling, a solo victory under these weather condition is almost unheard of. Cyclists usually ride in packs, or pelatons, with the cyclists in the front taking the brunt of the wind, and, therefore, having to use more energy. However, Rollin came in all on his own and defied all expectations of how the end would turn out.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Breakaway from Cancer</span> spokesperson, George Hincapie, also made a great showing, coming in second, and Iker Camano of Team Saunier Duval-Scott came in third. Levi Leipheimer still managed to maintain the overall leader jersey and will lead the pack in today's Time Trial in Solvang.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6689971646906856362-7416136447531563420?l=www.thewellnesscommunity.org%2Fblogs%2Fkim%2Fdefault.htm'/></div>Shannonnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6689971646906856362.post-53192278374537973882008-02-20T18:40:00.000-08:002008-02-20T20:13:49.885-08:00San Jose Comes Out to Celebrate the TourThe day started out cold and gray in the city of Modesto, where cyclists began Stage 3 of the Tour. After a wonderful 2007 - our 25th anniversary year - we have started 2008 off with a bang. We are in the process of preparing for a 2.0 launch of The Virtual Wellness Community - our online community for all people affected by cancer. We are excited to welcome a new Senior Director of The Virtual Wellness Community, Bill Shaffer. Also new to the team overseeing Education and Outreach is Ivy Ahmed - welcome!<br /><br />In addition to exciting changes to The Virtual Wellnes Community, we have begun the development process to build The Wellness Community's National Cancer Survivorship Research and Training Institute, to be housed in Philadelphia. This Institute will be the first ever community-based survivorship center in the Unites States. We hope you will all come and visit when we launch the Institute in 2009.<br /><br />And finally, we are gearing up again (no pun intended!) for the Amgen Tour of California, and the public awareness and fundraising arm of this amazing cycling event, Breakaway From Cancer. You will be hearing from us throughout the week starting February 17 as we follow the Tour from the north of California to the south and talk to folks affected by cancer throughout the state. Check out <a href="http://www.breakawayfromcancer.com/">www.breakawayfromcancer.com</a> to learn more about this amazing event.<br /><br />That's all for now. We hope to hear to from you as we blog from the Tour!<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6689971646906856362-1071867144316811049?l=www.thewellnesscommunity.org%2Fblogs%2Fkim%2Fdefault.htm'/></div>Kim Thiboldeauxnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6689971646906856362.post-73656615508097315522007-10-04T10:52:00.000-07:002007-10-04T11:05:47.481-07:00Preparing for our 25th anniversary celebration in DCWe are in full swing in our office getting ready for our big 25th anniversary celebration in DC in November! Thank you to all who joined us to share in the celebration.<br /><br /><div style="TEXT-ALIGN: center"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/tor-house-773247.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: pointer; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/tor-house-773243.jpg" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:85%;">The Tournament of Roses House<br /><br /><br /></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/the-benjamins-775397.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: pointer; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/the-benjamins-775393.jpg" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:85%;">Ann, Harriet and Lauren Benjamin<br /><br /></span><br /></div><div style="TEXT-ALIGN: center"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/awards-798740.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: pointer; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/awards-798736.jpg" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:85%;">Awards for the Southern California TWC founders<br /><br /><br /></span><p class="MsoNormal" style="TEXT-ALIGN: center"><span style="font-size:85%;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/Singing-741610.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: pointer; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/Singing-741606.jpg" border="0" /></a></span></p><span style="font-size:85%;">Celebrating TWCs birthday with a song and cake!<br /><br /></span><br /></div><p class="MsoNormal" style="TEXT-ALIGN: center"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/candid-751860.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: pointer; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/candid-751856.jpg" border="0" /></a></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="TEXT-ALIGN: center"><span style="font-size:85%;">Family &amp; friends of TWC enjoy the perfect weather during the program</span><br /></p><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6689971646906856362-8300320703796154329?l=www.thewellnesscommunity.org%2Fblogs%2Fkim%2Fdefault.htm'/></div>Kimnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6689971646906856362.post-33860353499676095002007-05-18T09:13:00.000-07:002007-05-24T07:05:31.750-07:00TWC Launches New Book in Los Angeles<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/TCWG-Cover-701560.JPG"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: pointer; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/TCWG-Cover-701553.JPG" border="0" /></a> <div><br />On May 17, 2007, we launched our newly published book, <em>The Total Cancer Wellness Guide</em>, at Dutton's bookstore in Brentwood. We had a great turnout of Wellness friends and family to celebrate this book, which provides a roadmap to the cancer experience for all people affected by cancer. Published by BenBella Books, the book will officially release on June 1. During the evening's celebration, I had a chance to speak about the book and about The Wellness Community. Harriet Benjamin reflected on our tremendous growth over the past 25 years and Mitch Golant talked about our rich history in Southern California. After 7 years, our TWC here is thriving. We have spent time with our wonderful, devoted colleagues Margalit, Hassia, Riva, Dafna and many other wonderful TWC facilitators and friends. <br /><br />On Monday night, we went to the "Wellness Cafe" where 80 patients and caregivers gathered to hear two young cancer survivors talk about how they met in group and traveled to Africa together. They showed slides from their trip and talked about how cancer has given them a new "lens" through which to view life. <br /><br />Today we went to the Tel Aviv Medical Center and spent time with a Palestinian man from Gaza whose daughter is being treated at the center for cancer. They came to Israel through a special humanitarian program run by the hospital. He and the social workers from the hospital talked about their shared desire for peace and their hope that the amazing one-on-one exchanges that are happening in the hospital through this program might set an important example for what is possible.<br /><br />Tomorrow we head to Jerusalem to meet with colleagues at the Sharei Tzedek Medical Center.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6689971646906856362-6901422253666032338?l=www.thewellnesscommunity.org%2Fblogs%2Fkim%2Fdefault.htm'/></div>Kim Thiboldeauxnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6689971646906856362.post-75300719161106146622007-04-03T11:18:00.000-07:002007-04-04T11:53:04.003-07:00The Wellness Community Partners with Revolution HealthWanna start a revolution?? That is what Steve Case and his power house board (including Colin Powell) are doing over at Revolution Health Group (RHG). The exciting news? They have approached The Wellness Community to be one of their partners in the cancer space. What are they looking to do? "Revolution Health seeks to create a health company where patients are put at the center of the health system, with more choices, more convenience, and more control over their health care." I would say that their mission is very consistent with The Wellness Community's Patient Active Concept. RHG is working to accomplish their goal by focusing on three areas: Content, Coverage, and Care. We are very excited that there will be a mini Wellness Community site within the Revolution site, letting people know about all of our great community resources. Take a look at RHG for yourself by visiting <a href="http://www.revolution.com">www.revolution.com</a> Thank you to RHG for this terrific partnership!<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6689971646906856362-7530071916110614662?l=www.thewellnesscommunity.org%2Fblogs%2Fkim%2Fdefault.htm'/></div>Kim Thiboldeauxnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6689971646906856362.post-12890327305221675772007-02-25T21:06:00.000-08:002007-02-27T07:06:21.971-08:00Race Finish in Long Beach! What an exciting finish in Long Beach after this incredibly scenic 77.5 mile circuit race. The action was fast and furious with lots of great energy from the thousands of fans. With views of the Pacific, the racers tore around this course and lit up Long Beach - and Levi Leipheimer reigned victorious!<br /><br />We had a great time with our friends from TWC-WLA and Redondo Beach and were so pleased to have Harriet Benjamin join us on stage to celebrate the end of the race and the success of the Breakaway From Cancer campaign!<br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/BFC-Stage-7-001-796734.jpg" rel="lightbox"><img style="cursor: pointer;" alt="" src="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/BFC-Stage-7-001-790317.jpg" border="0" /> <div align="center"><i>The W</i><i>ellness Community staff at the Lifestyle Festival</i></div></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/BFC-Stage-7-018-765920.jpg" rel="lightbpox"><img style="cursor: pointer;" alt="" src="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/BFC-Stage-7-018-757512.jpg" border="0" /> <div align="center"><i>Ellen Silver, Patrick Dempsey and Harriet Benjamin</i></div></a><br /><br /><a rel="lightbox" href="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/BFC-Stage-7-005-728322.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/BFC-Stage-7-005-726849.jpg" alt="" border="0" /><div align="center"><i>Judith Opdahl and Patrick<br /></i></div></a><br /></div><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/BFC-Stage-7-024-731137.jpg" lightbox=""><img style="cursor: pointer;" alt="" src="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/BFC-Stage-7-024-729897.jpg" border="0" /> <div align="center"><i>Patrick, Kim and George Hincapie</i></div></a><br /><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/BFC-Stage-7-036-737691.jpg" rel="lightbox"><img style="cursor: pointer;" alt="" src="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/BFC-Stage-7-036-728784.jpg" border="0" /> <div align="center"><i>Patrick at the Finish Line with Cynthia Shwalm from Amgen, Kim, Harriet, and Michael Bergin from the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship</i></div></a><br /></div><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/BFC-Stage-7-054-758292.jpg" rel="lightbox"><img style="cursor: pointer;" alt="" src="http://www.thewellnesscommunity.org/blogs/kim/uploaded_images/BFC-Stage-7-054-749746.jpg" border="0" /> <div align="center"><i>(L-R) Third place winner, Jason McCartney; first place winner, Levi Leipheimer; and second place winner, Jens Voight</i></div></a></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6689971646906856362-1289032730522167577?l=www.thewellnesscommunity.org%2Fblogs%2Fkim%2Fdefault.htm'/></div>Kim Thiboldeauxnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6689971646906856362.post-10309991322909330942007-02-24T21:45:00.000-08:002007-02-25T21:40:22.210-08:00Santa Barbara to Santa ClaritaThis 105.4 mile route today included heavy climbs and sprints in Ojai and in Santa Paula among fragrant orange groves.
