Dirty Dancing Tickets" Is Good Clean Fun!

The film Dirty Dancing came out in 1987, and its story takes place even earlier, but this deceptively titled little masterpiece took the moviegoers of the world by surprise. With a cast of characters played by relatively unknown actors, and not much of a budget, it has proven to be a continuing delight. The fact that it has grossed over $300 million and set a record of more than a million sales of home videos might tell you something. The fact that it engendered two multi-platinum albums and untold singles tells you even more.

For those of us who watched Dirty Dancing on the big screen when it was first released, watching it today is almost heartbreakingly nostalgic. The story takes place, after all, in 1963, "before Kennedy was assassinated", and when it seemed the world retained its innocence. Jennifer Grey plays Frances Houseman, known to everyone as "Baby", and not minding it at all. Patrick Swayze is Johnny Castle, the street punk who has the moves as the dance instructor at the resort.

The Houseman family is vacationing at Kellerman's, a Jewish resort in the Catskills, and they are honored guests since Baby's father is family physician to the owner of the resort. Baby is seventeen and "couldn't wait to join the Peace Corp and save the world." Her father dotes on her, but expects her to save the world by following in his footsteps. When his "Baby" gets mixed up with the crowd of "dirty dancing" people who party and dance dirty, he is appalled.

Watching Johnny and his partner, Penny, do their riveting (and deliciously dirty) Mambo number at a staff party, Baby is entranced. But when Penny falls prey to the owner's son, and has an illegal and life-threatening abortion, Baby gets her father involved, and it appears to be curtains for her growing attraction to the irresistible Johnny.

However, the 17-year-old girl has fallen in love as she is learning how to do the intricate and flamboyantly sensual "dirty dancing" that Johnny is so good at teaching. Johnny, in turn, is discovering that among all the women who pursue him, he has never met one like Baby. As they develop mutual trust, they also learn to dance together. And oh, how they dance! With the Foxtrot and Potato Sack Races in the background, these two reach the heights!

Meanwhile, the Foxtrot and badminton go on, but other dramas are playing out. Lisa confides to Baby that she's planning to "go all the way" with Robbie. Baby knows that Robbie is the father of Penny's aborted child, but their father thinks Johnny is the culprit. When Johnny is accused of theft by one of his many female "conquests" - she's seen him with Baby - he is assumed guilty by almost everyone. Baby knows, and this time Frances tells the truth. Frances, as Johnny tells her, is "a grown-up name".

The "dirty dancing" that these two wonderfully believable young people supply is so entrancing because it is both sensual and sophisticated, yet still has a purity that defies any element of sleaze. It is just a joy to watch them together. The grand finale has the entire clientele of Kellerman's on their feet and getting into the spirit in a big way. It's a triumph of courage over self-doubt, and love over any darn thing that stands in its way!

Dirty Dancing is basically a simple, romantic love story, with just enough supporting characters and interwoven plot lines to keep it interesting. When the forces of stodginess and intolerance show up, they are ultimately and emphatically overwhelmed by the forces of love and fair play. The realistically choreographed dance scenes are a powerful force in themselves, but everything comes together for a rousing happy ending.

The movie translates well into the Broadway stage production also. The stage musical adaptation of Dirty Dancing has played to enthusiastic theatre goers in Germany, England, Canada and even Australia, and is still showing in London. If you move fast you can still see the touring production of the musical in Boston, but it is scheduled to close March 15th of this year. If you haven't caught this show in a theatre or on stage, you ought to get the video - it's too good to miss!

Perfect Fitting of the Piston of an RC Nitro Engine

FITTING THE PISTON of an RC Race Engine:

You have to make the piston as round as the liner. Here are 2 effective ways to make the piston round.

1. Lap the piston to the liner with 1200 grit non-imbedding garnet. Only do a slight amount of lapping so you don't eliminate the proper tightness and fit of the liner/piston.

2. The absolute BEST WAY to make the piston round, is to use a Helical Lap. Only a few people have this capability. If you are interested in having your liner and piston fit, write to me at fit@rcboat.com and it will be automatically re-directed to Norm Doerr who has all of the helical laps that I used to own. He can also provide a small quantity of the Non-Imbedding Garnet Lapping Compound.

Running in of an engine will NOTassure you of a perfect liner/piston fit. It could happen, but doesn't over 80%+ (I guessed at the percentage, it might be over 95%+) of the time. You might get a good engine by running it in, but you will get a SUPERB DOMINATING ENGINE by following these guidelines.

A little side note of interest: I helped build 3 engines for a close friend to try to qualify for the RC 1/8 Car World Championships held in Indy a LONG time ago. He made the A Main which is almost unheard of. The ONLY things that were done to this engine was the sequence indicated above and below.

The liner to the Crankcase fit is also very important. The liner should be placed into the crankcase so that the fit is not forced but a snug slip fit. If the liner does not slip in and out of the case smoothly, you should LIGHTLY lap the liner to the case. The underside lip on the liner should also be lapped to the top of the case so that there is no distortion when you tighten down the head.

I use a non-imbedding aluminum oxide lapping compound at 1200 grit (available from the above e-mail address). You should have a little bit of this compound to use for MANY applications in our hobby.

The head button fit into the liner is also very important. On some engines the machining cutter leaves a radius where the head button fits into the liner so as to spread the top of the liner when tightened.

BE SURE NOT TO LAP THE PART OF THE HEAD BUTTON THAT STICKS INTO THE LINER - ONLY LAP THE PART THAT STRIKES THE TOP FLANGE OF THE LINER.

I also add a VERY SMALL AMOUNT of Dow Corning Silicone #738 RTV around the liner and under the lip of the liner when placed into the engine crankcase. This material is white and does not harden. It semi-hardens and seals. I apply a VERY VERY SMALL amount to the underside of the liner top flange to contact the case and form a seal of the liner to the case. This will not allow any crankcase pressure to escape from under this flange.

I assume that I don't have to tell you to use a toothbrush, lots of water, and dishwashing detergent to clean off the Garnet Lapping Compound and any dirt and residue from all parts, BEFORE assembling the engine.

THIS PRICEDURE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF BUILDING ANY NITRO PERFORMANCE MODEL ENGINE - PERIOD !!!!

The material of choice for most replacement chimney liners these days is stainless steel rather than clay tiles, because it's a more efficient installation process. You can get it in either stiff or flexible varieties.

Most people choose to have their new chimney liner professionally installed. However, there are kits available that include instructions for installation, and this can save you a lot of money. The kits usually include all the required accessories and attachments to get the job done.

Site Creation Tutorial - Photoshop Web TemplateS

Many people new to web design are confused by slices and Javascript rollovers and end up abandoning their projects out of frustration. The point of this Photoshop web tutorial is to keep things simple by creating a web page that uses only 2 graphics.

Start off by creating a banner and place it in the top row of a table that will contain 5rows and 1 column. The next row of the table will hold the text for your site along with photos you would like to incorporate into your site. Row 3 will hold a separator, row 4 will contain text links plus a copyright notice, ending with row 5 being a second separator.

For this tutorial, let's call our site just that "Our Site." Now to find a graphic for the banner we're creating. There are plenty of good images to be found at several of the free stock photo sites and for only a small fee, you can find top quality, professional images on some of the online galleries. Try the iStockPhoto gallery for beautiful illustrations or photos that at only a few dollars can add quite an upgrade to the presentation of your site design.

One tip is to choose one color from your graphic and utilize various shades of this color for your banner for a clean, coordinating look. For the sake of naming a color for this example, we'll go with green in a dark, medium and then light shade.

I find that by using the opacity slider on a sampled color you can create a nice variation. Open a new document and copy and paste the main graphic you've chosen into it. Now from the toolbox select the eyedropper tool and sample a color by clicking on it in your graphic. This will change the foreground color square in your toolbox.

Now open another new document and in the Background Contents select White. Click OK. With this document open, create a new layer by going Layer- New- Layer. Then go Edit- Fill and select Contents, Use: Foreground Color. This will fill your document with the color you just sampled. The trick here is to lower the opacity using the slider and to keep playing around with it until you find a nice shade. When you settle on one, flatten the image by going Layer- Flatten Image. Use the eyedropper tool again, this time to change the foreground color square in your toolbox so it is the same as your newly created color. Now click on the color square and the color picker will come up, and you can write down the numbers of your new color.

Scroll through your fonts to find one that appeals to you. Once you come across the one that you feel is right, play around with it a little. Adjust the tracking, the leading and the scale, or even a combination of these. Small adjustments can go a long way in making it much more personal and ensuring your site will stand out among others.

To select a font in Photoshop go Window- Character. In the palette you'll see a list of your installed fonts. To tweak the settings you'll need to bring up the Paragraph palette. You can do this by going Window- Paragraph.

If you are looking for new fonts, you have many options. Free font resources are available to you online.

For our example, create a new document that is 600 x 300 pixels. You can adjust this size according to your own design when you choose your own stock photo and plan the layout.

Now I'll create a new layer, Layer- New Layer and I'll call it Designer Girl. I'll place the illustration on this layer and shrink it to fit. You shrink your graphic by choosing Edit- Transform- Scale. The bounding box will have handles. Use the Shift Key to constrain proportions, and shrink your image by selecting the top left handle and pulling towards the bottom right. To move the graphic, drag inside the bounding box. Click enter when you're happy with the results.

Let's go with a tinted background. Here we will go with a light green.

Choosing the background layer, Layer 1, fill it with the light green by steps Select- All, then Edit- Fill. In the dialog box in Contents, select Use: Color and in the Color Picker enter the numbers you noted earlier.

The result is a 600 x 300 banner with a gentle background color and with the art placed on the left. We're getting there.

Let's say we want to add a thick stroke to the background layer to liven up the design for more interest. Make sure the background layer, Layer 1, is active, and create a copy by going Layer- New- Layer Via Copy. Next double-click next to the layer name; this will bring up the Blending Options in the Layers Style dialog box.

Pick and click on the word Stroke in the Styles options on the left side. I changed my settings to Size: 7px, Position: Inside, Blend Mode: Normal, Opacity: 100%, Fill Type: Color, and I clicked the color swatch and entered my color number into the color picker and clicked OK.

The border serves to balance out the design, so you have the option to be as creative as you would like with your own ideas.

We're going to put the names of the major sections right on the banner. These will be the links. Since it will be just one single graphic we will be using image maps.

Create a new layer for the text. Use the type tool to make the section names and use the move tool to place them right where you want them on the banner. Choose a color for your text that is darker than your background color. Do this by going Window- Character. In the Character palette you'll find a color square. Click on it to change colors.

You'll need an HTML editor like GoLive or Dreamweaver to automate this process. It's really very simple. You make little "maps" over each word and then enter the link destination. If you don't have an HTML editor you'll need to do a Google search on image maps to find a tutorial, or buy a book like Elizabeth Castro's HTML Quickstart Guide to help you out.

Create a new document. The width should be 600 pixels, and the height should be about 12 pixels. Fill this with your background color. Then, using the text tool and a dark color, type some periods, like this:........... and place them in the file, centering them. Change the size and the spacing until it looks perfect. Now save this as a GIF file.

With your HTML editor of choice build a simple table that contains 5 rows and 1 column. If you're going to use text link navigation below the banner instead of image maps on the banner, create an extra row so you end up with 6 rows in your table. Place your elements into the individual rows of the table and that's it!

This is a lot of information to go over and sometimes can get to be a little overwhelming. If this is the case, or you are simply on a time budget, there is a shortcut you can take. You can purchase ready-made templates from sites such as Template Monster that you can use as a foundation to create web pages in Photoshop.

On the front page of Template Monster you'll find a pulldown menu where you can select options and then carry out a search for a template. The templates are reasonably priced and pretty easy to manage in GoLive or Dreamweaver. In the past I've purchased a template solely for the color scheme and the images. On certain projects I found this was less expensive than buying stock photos. Visit Template Monster to see the wide variety of website templates that they offer.

How To Make A Hovercraft Work

Building and flying a hovercraft has a lot to do with the laws of physics. Physics will explain the equilibrium of forces between surface areas below the hovercraft board. This force of air pressure made to lift a load is the applied physics called fluid mechanics. To simplify, the scientific equations involved in how to make a hovercraft work is basically just about using air to create cushion below and thrust to move it forward.

Truth is, you don't have to be an Einstein to get this working. If you hope to spend your weekend in building your first hovercraft, basic skills and a common sense is all you need. How to make a hovercraft is simply to know the factors that affect its operations. What are these?

1. Weight of the Hoverboard - Since a hovercraft involves lifting, weight is therefore a significant consideration. The amount of pressure you need to create air cushion must be greater than the hoverboard. If you hope to design a hovercraft that can carry you, then add your weight to the equation. Not that you have to do calculations. Just increase the amount of air you provide into the system.

2. Air or fluid pressure. So while you're figuring out how much you weigh, the platform, and if it can carry your weight, think about other loads to consider. What about the weight of the device to create the air flow such as a fan? You need to add that into the platform and thus increasing its weight. Sounds complicated? Not really. Read the next items.

3. Control the air flow beneath the bottom surface of the hoverboard in order to make the whole thing work. To do that, a hovercraft has a unique air frame called a skirt. It's usually made of an elastic material strong enough to retain its form when subjected to pressure yet has flexibility properties as well. The skirt is fastened around the edge of the board like a, well, skirt.

4. Passage of air. You need a fan installed facing downwards in such a way that air is sucked in to the bottom of the platform. You need to bore holes in the platform to let the air flow. The size of the hole is inversely proportional to the air pressure output. This means that the smaller the hole, the higher the pressure of air built passing through it. The skirt around the board does that magically.

5. Thrust and steering device. Now you have a platform that is floating on a smooth earth surface. Next thing you need is a device that can thrust your vehicle forward. Also you need to know how to make a hovercraft turn to the right or left direction when gliding. With this in mind, you need to set up a propeller and a rudder.
