Powder Mountain Hillclimb presented by Diamond Peak Mountain Sports

Eden, UT - (Photo Credit: Natalie Best Steed)The first ever Powder Mountain Hillclimb, presented by Diamond Peak Mountain Sports, was held this past weekend in the Ogden Valley. The road bicycle race attracted weekend warriors and elite riders alike. 50 cyclists lined up on SR 158 to tackle one of the toughest bicycle climbs in the west. Chris Hong, a rider for the elite Bob’s Bicycles team, said that this was one of the toughest races he’s ever done. Chris was using this race as aprt of a tune up for the Tour of Utah which runs in August. He finished first in the Men’s Pro/Cat 1/2 division and third overall.

The battle for the fastest time to the top, an almost 6 mile, 3300 ft slog up to Powder Mountain Resort from Wolf Creek Utah, was fast and furious for the best climbers. 15 year old Keegan Swenson of Cole Sport, Nathan Cisney from Rooster’s Brewing Co. and Hong were absolutely railing it up the road. Hong attacked Swenson and was able to gap a bit, but Swenson’s steady tempo proved too much and Hong was eventually overtaken. It was then Swenson and Cisney who battled it out for top honors. In the last grueling mile Cisney wasa bale to pull ahead and finish in a standard setting time of 41 min 20 sec taking the overall and 1^st in the Men’s Cat 5 division. Swenson was only 30 seconds back good enough for second overall and 1^st in the Men’s Cat 4 class. Hong crossed the finish line 2 min 9 sec back.

Everyone who finished this race can consider themselves winners, says event promoter, Ben Towery of Team Excelerator. He was very pleased with the turnout and the quality of the riders who competed. The weather was absolutely perfect and the difficulty of the ride was countered by the beauty of the Ogden Valley.

1st Annual Brett Earl Family Benefit to be held April 24 at Powder Mountain

Powder Mountain is hosting its first annual ski benefit on Friday, April 24 for the family of Brett S. Earl. Earl, a resident of Eden, died unexpectedly of heart attack on April 11, 2009 at the age of 39. 100% of the proceeds will go directly to the Earl family – Darnelle, Riley, Raj, Taj and India.

Powder Mountain will open Sundown Lift and Lodge from noon – 8pm on Friday, April 24. The fun of skiing and sledding in springtime conditions will be enhanced by a live music, a silent auction and a barbeque. A snowcat will escort non-skiers on scenic tours of Lightning Ridge. A minimum donation of $15 per person will provide participants with either a Sundown lift pass or one ride on the Lightning Ridge snowcat.

Passes can be Ordered Online or at the Sundown Lodge on the day of the event. For more information or to make a donation to the silent auction, call 801-745-3772 or email info@powdermountain.com.

Spring Session & Trifecta

The three day boarding event was a success. Powder Mountain would like to thank all the shred-masters that came out to any of the three events. The was some serious skill at every event. The skate event felt like the Tampa Am, because the teenagers were killing it. Pictured is one of the winners, Thomas, doing a bennihana. Another picture is a contestant sliding a bs tail to shove-it out. The Flowrider event was wet'n'wild with our own Tyrell Farnes spraying everyone. On the slopes skier Mark Waterfall stuck a double back, and Snowboarder Kurt Russell stomped a switch bs 720. Dial in your tricks for next year. A huge thanks to Decade, Vitamin Water, Skullcandy, Rossignol, Salomon, Bonfire, Atomic, Apo, Eden Coffee, and Crossroads.

The weather may not have its mind made up, but the season is inevitably coming to an end. Thousands of skiers and snowboarders from all over the world have enjoyed Powder Mountain this season and we are going to celebrate. Come to the season ending party April 18th from 12 at the Sundown lift. There will be live music from The Legendary Porch Pounders, (Bad Brad from KRCL), and Funk Shui. There will also be lots of food, some awards, and of course some spring time shredding.

Having a high-speed quad, silky fast snow, and a wide open mountain causes one to consider things one might not otherwise entertain. Like skiing from open to close without a break just to see how many laps you can make and vertical you can ski.

Well, last Thursday, April 19th, I found out, at least for me, the number is 52. 52 runs on our Hidden Lake Lift and 67,600 vertical feet. Other than catching my tip on the maze gate at the bottom and splatting face first in the lift line one time, it went remarkably well.

It was a suprisingly enjoyable day. Not nearly as much work as I expected. My day usually involves a series of interruptions, mostly important and necessary, but interruptions nonetheless while trying to focus on the things on my to do list. This day I rode the lift and pointed my skis downhill, pausing only briefly to pick the least crowded run. Oh, that and which playlist to listen to next.

The thing I enjoyed most, other than beating Rod Kelly’s record, was sharing the lift. Riding the lift 52 times gives you lots of opportunities to meet people. I met friendly folks from Texas, North Carolina, Arizona, New York, Florida, Chicago, LA, San Francisco, Idaho, and many more from all over Utah. I met a nurse from Long Beach that worked in the NICU when our daughter was born and spent her first three months there. I met friends of friends from Ski Utah, Young Chevrolet, and Burton Snowboards. I conducted business, shared 4 or 5 rides with my wife, caught up with co-workers, listened to reggae, got guest feedback on how we’re doing, and skied White Pine a lot!

I took a picture of myself and whomever I was riding the lift with each time. I won't bore you with all 52, but here are some of the fun people I met that day.

You'd smile too if it was your 100th day in a row

Roger Klug is a happy man. At least from my few brief encounters with him it would seem so. He's got things pretty well figured out, up at 4AM, to work by 5, and on the mountain by 9:30-10AM. Times that by 100 and you arrive at today.

Today is Roger's 100th day in a row skiing at Powder Mountain. He started when we opened night skiing on December 15th and hasn't missed a day since.

Roger's passion for skiing really kicked in seven years ago when, after moving to Utah, his son said to him, "Dad, it's not right to live in Utah and not have a season pass." "We've had a season pass to Powder Mountain ever since", Roger smiles. Roger and his cohorts, Neal (his son), Devin Hardy, Darren Murray, and Roger Nicosia, all love the terrain off Sunrise. When asked what's his favorite, he replies wryly, "left, right or middle... it's all good". And the secret to his longevity, "God's blessings, definitely God's blessings, good health, oh and a resort that's open every day."

Congratulations Roger and keep on shreddin'!

Trifecta of Shred on April 2 – 4, 2009

Powder Mountain’s 11th Annual Spring Session presents the Trifecta of Shred on April 2 – 4, 2009. Surfers, skateboarders and snowboarders will compete in three separate competitions with the overall winner reigning as the 2009 Chairman of the Boards.

The ever popular Spring Session is the highlight of the freestyle season with a freestyle terrain and half pipe jam session at the Hidden Lake Terrain Park. The competitors and spectators will be treated to a barbeque and the tunes of Codi Jordan and Funk Shui. Registration is free for anyone with a valid Powder Mountain lift pass. The competition will run from 10am – 3pm with live music starting at 11am. Decade, Vitamin Water, Skull Candy and AMP Alarm are sponsors of the competition.

“The Spring Session is the original slopestyle comp at Powder Mountain and has set the stage for all other events at the resort,” said Dave Jessup, Terrain Parks Manager. “The Hidden Lake Park has continually evolved this year with new rails, jumps and walls. If you haven’t made it to the park lately, you will be surprised.”

It is a natural progression to include surfing and skateboarding into the competitive mix since interest in these sports resulted in the creation of the winter version of freestyle. The Trifecta of Shred gives snowboarders an opportunity to show their respect to their ancestral roots.

The event kicks off on Thursday with an indoor skateboarding competition at Crossroads Skate Park. On Friday, the competitors move to Flowrider for the surfing contest. The event will culminate on Saturday with the Spring Session at Powder Mountain. Athletes may compete in only one or two events, but must enter all three to be crowned Chairman of the Boards.

Monoskiers invades Powder Mountain for Monopalooza '09

About 50 monoskiers descended on Powder Mountain the last weekend of February for Monopalooza 2009. Monopalooza has become an annual gathering where monoskiers can actually ski with each other on their preferred sliding toy. The Monopalooza gathering has become an annual event that many just can't miss.

Powder Mountain's Newest Employee is a Real Dog!

Gunny is a two year old Golden Retriever from Hunters Trace Kennel in eastern Wyoming. He lives in Eden with his humans, Joe and Betsy Jennings. Gunny is a frisky 60 pounder who loves snow, people and food – not necessarily in that order.

It takes a lot of time, hard work and dedicated people to train a K-9 Rescue Team. Training started when Gunny was 9 months old and it took 13 months for Joe and Gunny to be ready for their avalanche rescue test. Joe and Betsy spent many hours digging holes in the snow and waiting for Gunny or one of the other dogs to find them. That’s right, the only way to train an avalanche rescue dog is to bury people under the snow so the dog can follow their scent and pinpoint their location.

Joe and Gunny took their certification test on 31 January at Powder Mt. To pass the test Gunny had to search an area 100 yards by 100 yards in which three victims were buried 4 to 5 feet deep. The area was chopped up to resemble avalanche debris and there were a number of people in the area, including a probe line of ski patrollers, to provide distractions. Gunny had to find all 3 victims in less than 20 minutes. He did pretty well – he found all three victims in 12 minutes!

Powder Mountain's Own Wins Competition

5th Annual Nikita Chikita at Mammoth

Some 70 girls descended on Mammoth’s South Park on Saturday for the 5 th annual Nikita Chikita pro-am jam. Marley Colt, a 17-year old who got her start at Powder Mountain, took the am contest and earned herself a one-year sponsorship from Nikita.

The youngest competitor was only 9 years old and the oldest was in her mid-fifties. Competitors dropped in either the Pro or Am competitions and the field was split pretty much evenly between the two categories. Each girl got two runs, top five from each group advanced and then met for one final run.

The course consisted of two jump lines. The micro-groms took to the 5-to-10 foot mini-table line, while the rest of the girls had their way with the 25-to-40 foot tables, down rails, donkey-out boxes, and the finale wallride.

2009 Superfly Open Snowkiting Competition

2009 SUPERFLY OPEN SNOWKITING COMPETITION TO RIP AT POWDER MOUNTAIN

(Eden, UT) (January 29, 2009) – The second annual SuperFly Open sponsored by Utah Urban Surf Kiteboarding and Best Kiteboarding will bring some of the world’s best snowkiters to Powder Mountain, March 13 through15, 2009. The event will include three categories of competition as well as free snowkite clinics that are open to the public. SuperFly celebrations and award parties will be held on Friday night at Brewskis and on Saturday evening at Red Moose Lodge.

Last year the event attracted more than 50 of the world’s best snowkiters with competitors traveling as far as Norway. With the success of last year’s event, organizers anticipate a substantial growth in competitors and spectators this year.

“If you’ve ever watched the colorful beauty of hot air balloons launching, imagine the balloon on a pair of skis or snowboard ripping across the horizon. It will give you some inkling and intrigue of the sport,” said Tyler Tate, owner of Utah Urban Surf Kiteboarding. “It’s colorful, it’s dynamic, and it’s COOL! Charge up your cameras and video recorders and head on up to Powder Mountain!”

The action will take place in an area known as “The Towers” in the Hidden Lake area of Powder Mountain (just south of the top of the Sunrise Poma lift.) Slide rails and boxes are being generously provided by event sponsors. The elevation of that area is approximately 9,000 ft.

“Those intrigued by the sport are welcome to watch some of these top athletes,” said Tate. “The viewing area is wide and open, so folks can cruise on over and take a break from skiing or riding to watch all the action, grab a burger and enjoy the incredible backdrop of the entire Wasatch Range and Great Salt Lake.”

Three categories of competition will be on display – Freestyle, Kite Races and Big Air. There will also be timed challenges hosted by Ogden-based timepiece manufacturer Suunto. Additionally, free clinics will take place each day and are open to the public.

The celebration of snowkiting doesn’t end when the lifts stop running. On Friday night, the Best Bash includes food, drink and music, and the popular “Best Girls Contest” at Ogden’s entertainment district, Historic 25th Street. The finalists for Fridays’ Model Contest will be selected from two preliminary model searches held at Green Street Bar in downtown Salt Lake City. Wilhelmina Urban will be scouting and running the model searches for more local talent while the Green Street bar is excited to be hosting the first rounds in the snow lodge atmosphere on February 13 and 27, 2009. Come enjoy super sexy girls as the showcase the latest in snow wear. Saturday evening’s dinner at Red Moose Lodge will feature an exciting multi-media presentation on snowkiting expeditions, including an expedition by Andrew McLean, photographer and author of “The Chuting Gallery” (a Utah steep backcountry ski guide book.)

Stoked on Socks comes to Powder Mountain on Feb 26th.

Bring a package of new socks to Powder Mountain on Thursday, February 26 and receive a $16.00 discount towards an all access day pass. The $16.00 discount will be deducted from the regular $56.00 adult lift pass, and may not be combined with any other offer. Powder Mountain is collaborating with Stoked On Socks in order to give the ski/snowboard community an opportunity to help the homeless by donating what they want most, new socks.

Stoked On Socks, a non-profit organization founded by former pro-snowboarder Mitch Nelson, will be at the Timberline Lodge at Powder Mountain to collect the donations. Stoked On Socks distributes the contributions to The Rescue Mission of Salt Lake, Road Home Homeless Shelter, Volunteers of America, and Wasatch Homeless Healthcare.

Ski Utah Successfully Skis All 13 Utah Ski Resorts in One Day on January 13, 2009

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH- On Tues., Jan. 13, Ski Utah and a team of nine skiers successfully skied all 13 Utah ski and snowboard resorts in a single day. This is the first time in history that every resort in the state has been skied in one day, breaking the record of 11 resorts in a day set during the 2003-04 winter season.

The mission began at Brian Head Resort in southern Utah at 4 a.m. The team drove to the Giant Steps run and enjoyed pristine corduroy snow under the light of a large moon. Mother Nature continued to provide perfect bluebird weather conditions throughout the day. Spectacular snow conditions were complemented with perfect temperatures, mountain-blue skies, gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. The final stop was at Beaver Mountain, near Logan Utah, over 360 miles north of the mission's starting place. The group arrived at Beaver Mountain just before 8 p.m.
and enjoyed three celebratory runs off the Little Beaver Lift.

"With an international airport just minutes from our mountains, Utah is the most accessible winter destination in the world," commented Ski Utah President Nathan Rafferty. "Skiing 13 in a day, using only a van and skis, really underscores this point."
