Viagra saved another baby’s life

I think girl’s parents will remember that day for good and will be grateful to scientists that discovered Sildenafil Citrate (Viagra).

I’ve written about off-label use of Viagra by sportsmen, pilots, florists and of course doctors. Here is another story.

An Indian doctor used Viagra to save the life of a four month old girl.
She had very rare heart defects – her heart was on right side of the body and had a hole. Also she had underdeveloped lung.

When these facts were discovered, doctors decided to operate little baby to save her life.
During 4 hour operation blood pressure rose dramatically and blood started to flow to the heart in wrong direction. The operating surgeon K.R. Balakrishnan decided to inject Sildenafil (brand name Viagra) to save baby’s life. Now he is sure that only use of Viagra could help and this was the only right decision.

As a fact Viagra was made to treat angina and high blood pressure, but during tests and trials the pill appeared to treat erectile dysfunction in men.

Viagra may treat heart attacks and strokes

A new research says that Viagra may treat some serious health conditions, including heart attacks and strokes.

Donald Maurice, a professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, says that his team has found how #1 ED pill in the world inhibits an enzyme PDE5. The activity of platelets (small blood cells needed for normal blood clotting) is regulated by this enzyme.

Scientists were proud of this discovery because it’s absolutely new approach to regulating what enzymes do in human body. It can also offer a potentially new use of Viagra, already widely used for other applications.

An article in the online edition of the journal proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) says that “problems can arise when people have stents permanently implanted in their arteries to maintain blood flow. Their platelets sometimes bind to the stent and if enough platelets accumulate to form a blockage, this may cause a sudden, massive heart attack or stroke”.

Lindsay Wilson, author of the study, says that Viagra like drugs inhibit PDE5 enzyme, but it has not been possible far to isolate the small “pool” of activity within the cell where it occurs. There are two different pools of the PDE5 enzyme within each cell, but only one of them regulates platelet activation.
The new research allows to affect the activity of enzymes in one neighbourhood and leave alone their ‘identical twins’ in a different neighbourhood in that cell,” says Lindsay. Now scientists know that not all enzymes in the cell do the same functions. The main idea was to use a PDE5 inhibitor such as Viagra selectively to inhibit platelet function.

Viagra – a new doping?

Roger Clemens (a baseball star) is one of athletes who have discovered the off-label benefits of Viagra. Sildenafil combined with some sport nutrition is able to help deliver oxygen and performance-enhancing drugs to muscles more efficiently, increasing endurance. And one more important thing – it doesn’t lead to the impotence that is one of the side-effects to testosterone injections.
Viagra is absolutely legal, it’s not banned (for a while) in any sport! The World Anti-Doping Agency consider to launch a study to find out can Viagra be used to cheat.
Some athletes say: “It's bigger than creatine. It's the greatest product in nutritional supplements and it’s safer than aspirin."
The number of athletes is bigger then number of men with ED. I think this news could make a great demand on Viagra.

Viagra prevents heart damage

It seems like Viagra continues to surprise us more and more. The diamond-shaped pill, first designed to treat angina, than approved to treat impotence (Erectile Dysfunction), pulmonary hypertension and prolong shelf life of cut flowers have shown one more unexpected benefit - Viagra can prevent heart damage caused by muscular dystrophy.
The study led at the Montreal Heart Institute revealed that sildenafil (Viagra’s active ingredient) improved the heart performance of mice having common form of muscular dystrophy.
The findings revealed a revolutionary new treatment of cardiac complications in patients suffering from muscular dystrophy (serious genetic condition that affects 1/3600 of men. The disease leads to muscle weakness, heart problems, scoliosis, and obesity. Few patients can live after age 25. It usually causes death.
Viagra is prescribed to treat different problems, like erectile dysfunction, altitude sickness and pulmonary hypertension. The drug is considered to be safe, but it's too premature to start prescribing Viagra to treat muscular dystrophy. Serious clinical trials should be led before Sildenafil will be approved for treatment of muscular dystrophy.

Flying high on Viagra

It sounds like a joke, but Israel's air force is considering giving its pilots Viagra to improve their performance in the air.

A recent study showed a link between Sildenafil and improving performance in high altitudes.

The Viagra’s active ingredient was found to make mountain climbers perform better in an environment with lack of oxygen, which causes dizziness and fatigue.

This research has led doctors to consider giving pilots flying at high altitudes (up to 50000 feet) anti-impotence drug.

Viagra is considered to be effective in these type of conditions because long shortage in oxygen leads to high blood pressure in the lungs and the drug helps to deal with that.

Now Israel’s pilots will be flying better and faster not only to fulfill their missions but to return home as quickly as possible while Viagra’s effect lasts.

Viagra, alcohol and narcotics

Let’s agree that very often sex is linked with alcohol admission. It has no sense to convince everybody that sexual games in drunken state are not the most useful thing in the life. Apart from the risk of seeing not what you were expecting to see the next morning, you have a very high probability to harm your health, getting infected, etc.

I’m sure, all written above is well known to all readers, so I will not continue this topic. So, let’s return to alcohol and Viagra.

As far as I know, no special studies were made on this subject. However, to the date there is no data that the joint use of Viagra and alcohol (in small amounts) can lead to fatal consequences. I’ve heard only one story about Italian man who took Viagra with wine, and appeared in hospital. The amount of alcohol wasn’t mentioned.

It is difficult to resist the temptation to recall that ethyl alcohol is the substance depressing the central nervous system. Furthermore, adverse effect of alcohol on erectile function in men is well-known. So is there any sense to take Viagra, designed to enhance en erection, and to oppress this erection from the other side?

Regarding to narcotics, as in the case with alcohol, special studies had no place. However, if in the case of alcohol, you may start a conflict with your health, in the case of drugs you have a chance to the conflict with the law. The use and the spreading of drugs in every country is braking the law (do not pretend that you did not know).

When Viagra appeared in the UK, the drug was met with great enthusiasm among the youth. London, which is considered to be the center of "club-life", young people used Viagra during the events in the clubs. The cases when young people complaining doctors of pain in the heart and sometimes occurred heart attacks were not rare. The patients were 20-25 years old! It is known that angina (a heart condition) is very rare in young people.

Previously heart attacks among young people, as a rule, were caused by the use of cocaine, which can cause cramps of coronary vessels, but now young people found new know-how – they mix Viagra with the most popular drug Ecstasy. The new cocktail dubbed "Sextasy."

I think all of you well know that drug use is not “very healthy” and could lead to deadly complications and death. If these drugs are mixed with each other or different drugs, the chance to get complications or to die rises several times.

I’m absolutely not going to promote healthy lifestyles. I just warn of possible consequences of improper admission of Viagra, created to improve the quality of your sexual life, not to experiment with your own health.

Viagra. Safe after 80.

Every man knows “Playboy” magazine. But did you hear something about its owner.

His name is Hugh Hefner. He is 81 years old. End now he tells that his life has never been better than it is right now, the last half dozen years have been better than ever. I think not many persons may tell the same. Hugh lives with three, stunning blonde babes as his live-in girlfriends.

Thanks to Viagra, his life is so good, in fact, that despite a deep personal dislike of reality television, in all its forms, Hefner agreed to allow cameras into his home to film a series called Girls Of The Playboy Mansion - so we could all share his joy.
I don’t understand why Pfizer doesn’t use Hefner as Viagra’s ad. They try to put some Elvis in Viagra’s ad (Viva Viagra) but I think just telling Hefner’s story could be enough to double Viagra sales. A man after 80 satisfies 3 young girls – isn’t it amazing story. What we have got instead: Pfizer tries to present its ED pill as a party time drug.
Viagra was patented as the first erectile dysfunction medicine in 1996 by Pfizer Inc. After approval by the Food and Drug Administration in 1998, it was the first in the United States. For two years (1999-2001) sales exceeded $1 billion. Credibility was lent to the drug with ad campaigns featuring such people as Bob Dole.
In 2003, two other drugs were released. Cialis, by Eli Lilly & Company, and Levitra, from Bayer AG, were in competition for those suffering from erectile dysfunction. Lilly estimates that Cialis will be number one ED pill outside the USA this December. Pfizer answered with a change to their ad campaign. The FDA sent Pfizer a letter warning that the ad featuring a middle-age man sporting a grin and devil horns did not contain enough information concerning the side effects and risks with Viagra. When the warning letter went public, Pfizer pulled the ads.
Unfortunately, as far as Viagra is concerned, what happens in Vegas may NOT stay in Vegas when the use of Viagra as a party drug is encouraged with irresponsible ads like this-there is a real possibility of increased STD and HIV exposure a result of Pfizer's encouragementof the reckless use of its ED drug, Viagra.
