PayPal Screws up XO Laptop Orders

A number of XO Laptop orders have been massively delayed due to a system error that affectively lost user's shipping addresses.

On January 17th, my colleague Matthew Newton poked his head into my office. He'd also donated, and was also impatiently waiting for his XO. He told me that he'd just spent an hour on the phone with OLPC customer service, and had been told that they didn't have his shipping address, as a result of some glitch relating to the fact he'd paid via PayPal.

I too had paid with PayPal...but I didn't have an hour to spare. So I checked the "Track Your Order" link and entered my e-mail address and tracking number. That sent me to a page saying I'd probably received my XO, with...confusingly...a link to a page that it said would let me track my order. I clicked on that link, and got a page not found error.

Ghana Man Killed by Cell Phone

You know I don't quite think anyone's ready to die when they pick up their cell phone to make a call while it's charging...that is unless you're calling to have someone kill you...in which case I guess you just made someone's life a little bit easier. Unfortunately for one Ghana man I don't think that was the case.

Never, ever answer a cell phone while it is being RECHARGED!! A few days ago, a person was recharging his cell phone at home. Just at that time a call Came in and he answered it with the instrument still connected to the outlet. After a few seconds electricity flowed into the cell phone unrestrained and the young man was thrown to the ground with a heavy thud. His parents rushed to the room only to find him unconscious, with a weak heartbeat and burnt fingers. He was rushed to the nearby hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

3D Objects in the real world...sorta...kinda...not really.

MIT is showing off a nifty demonstration of a technology they are developing which allows for real time viewing of 3D Objects in a real world environment. Applications in which this could be used? Well I'm fairly uncreative when it comes to things like this but I'm pretty sure an interior decorator would have a ball with it.

ATi Radeon HD 3870 X2 Released

Today AMD officially released the ATi Radeon HD 3870 X2 High Performance GPU. Reviews thus far appear to be fairly positive. See links below to see reviews from several hardware websites.

When you boil it all down to the actual gameplay experience delivered, the ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 does offer a very high level of image quality in games. It is able to handle 2560x1600 very well in Call of Duty 4, HL2, and UT3. A single Radeon HD 3870 cannot do this, so there is a marked improvement over a single Radeon HD 3870 video card. As driver updates are released it is a safe bet performance will also be increasing, especially in Crysis.
