There weren't a lot of problems. We started the day off in a park that runs along the Buffalo Bayou downtown Houston. The light was beautiful.

After that, we broke for lunch. After the DP and I realized I had forgotten the harddrive to dump the footage too, I had to run to my house before moving on to the second location. I did that and we got started on shooting at the second location.

At that location, we got some excellent performances from Paul Damon and Susan Fox, two actors I had brought in to play Casey's parents. They did a terrific job.

After that, we broke for dinner and moved onto the third location, a townhouse of the west side of Houston owned by one of the extra actors. We had Magic Hour and got some wonderful footage outside before moving in to finish the days shooting and wrap which we did around 9pm.

It was a long day of work but we did get quite a lot shot. I feel the project is really moving forward now and many of the doubts I had I no longer have and they have been replaced with pride and an eagerness to finish.

Stay Tuned for more. I got some B/W pics from behind the scenes. They were shot on film and my lab has to send B/W out so there is considerable turnaround, a week. I'll post them as soon as they are available.

Brad Ferrell - Director

www.angelisdigitalstudio.com

First Day of Shooting

I can't say the first day of shooting went off without a hitch, but it was great. After we wrapped and broke down and put away all of the lights, I was beaming with pride on my ride home. I loved it.

We had about 8 people come out to work on crew. Randy brought them through his mailing list and organization, http://www.houstonfilm.org. Everyone was professional and everything went like clockwork. We did run out of time, but we did get into the club an hour late. I almost lost the entire film crew. There was a moment there around 45 minutes they wanted to leave, but we decided to wait and we got in.

So we are behind on our shooting schedule. We are already planning on picking up the three scenes that got left out of Saturday's shoot on August 9th, the last day of the shoot.

Also, Nathan's brother, Micky, is playing the part of Casey now. He did an excellent job, as did everyone Saturday. We had close to 12 extras and the club scenes look really good. In fact the opening shoot Saturday, when I saw it on the monitor, I exclaimed, "That looks like its straight off of the CW."

I couldn't be happier with where we are at and I'm just waiting for the second day of shooting now.

Take Care,

Brad Ferrell - Director

www.angelisdigitalstudio.com

The Burden of Dreams and Waiting

I don't know how many of you wanted to write or actually wrote a script. I didn't see this gift I have as a passion only. I wanted and I still want ( because I am not yet a professional screenwriter) to make a career from this. I dreamed about having at least one script made all my life. I cannot tell you how happy, excited and nervous I am knowing that the shooting of "Meet me in the park" begins on 19th July.

I am happy because one of my scripts succeeded to capture the attention of a director and some producers, I am excited because I have already seen the movie in my head and I know it is impossible to be the same at the end (it will be much more beautiful but not exactly the same) and I am nervous because I know there are so many things to put together, there are so many problems that can appear and only the courage and the strong will of those directly involved can get to this movie's "birth".

Yes, it is very sad for me that I am here, so far away , not being able to help and to encourage all of you. The only way I can make my presence to be felt are words.Written words that maybe some of you will not read. But if some of the actors, producers etc will read my blogs I tell them to be strong to have faith and to fight for this film to be a successful one.

Once, another producer wrote me back telling me my loglines are pretty good and intriguing but he needs completed scripts( in those days I hadn't finished any scripts) but he wanted me to continue and he was fascinated by the internet , who can relate two people from two far away corners of the world: United States of America and Romania. I wrote him back and told him that even if I am from Romania I won't stop till I become a successful screenwriter. I have a long way till then but I am on the right path....this is my shortcoming: I believe in impossible or almost impossible things...

So, if we have reached so far let's all believe in "impossible" things. Let's all don't stop till we make a great movie...because we all know it is going to be a successful movie.

Best Wishes,

Marina Rasnoveanu

Exciting Happenings

Hi All,

We have some exciting happenings here at "Meet Me in the Park." Check this news out.

As we were unable to accomodate Matt Schultze's summer schedule, we let him go and asked Nathan LeBlanc to come onboard as Casey. Rehearsal's start in July.

We've also set aside 4 weekend days in July to shoot that accomodates everyone. This includes Cameraman and Director of Photography, Randy Chapman. This will be my first time working Randy and his HVX-200 with a M2 35mm adapter. I look forward to seeing the results.

Rather than post a press release, I thought I should bring you the news first. Please, also, read below the story of Ovidiu Mot and contribute if you can. The story is a real tragedy so far.

Thanks,

Brad Ferrell - Director

http://www.angelisdigitalstudio.com/

The Story of Ovidiu Mot

Having a script made into a film is a completely new thing for me, and right after Brad Ferrell, the director of "Meet Me in the Park" created this blog, a shocking story from my country broke into my mind.

Two months ago, I read in a Romanian newspaper some article about Ovidiu Mot, a successful actor from Sibiu, a Romanian town. He was attacked and suffered a comotion right after the premiere of the play "Seagull". The doctors didn't give him any attention thinking he was a drunk. The MRI of the hopsital was broken so Ovidiu's state grew worse. The doctors didn't give him any hope , but , as usual, life and the faith of the loved ones demonstrated that God still makes miracles. But, life in Romania is tough and now, after one year since all happened Ovidiu Mot's wife, Ileana, is struggling to offer a "normal"life to their child, to keep her job, to take care her husband who needs to receive special care in hospital, to find a good hospital abroad and ... and to find money for her husband's recovery.

I know this is not a blog for these kind of things but I thought here come only the ones who love art, film, theatre..and the actors...and I thought that one of them would be impressed by a story of a man who had...and has the gift of offering us the opportunity to dream and to see life differently. Maybe them would be touched by an unfair fate who twisted the path of a man in just few minutes and would want to help a woman who knows that single mothers never cry...
She gave me a letter that I translated beyond...her letter for the world...her deepest and most touching feelings...she does not beg for money..she just cry for help in a very dignified manner.

If you think you can help them ..in any way...feel free to write to Ileana Mot, Ovidiu's wife at ileana_mot@yahoo.com.

Here are some links to Romanian articles about this tragedy;

http://www.click.ro/actualitate/gasiti-l-pe-omul-care-mi-a-schilodit-sotul

http://www.protv.ro/stiri/social/actorul-ovidiu-mot-joaca-propriul-rol-in-drama-vietii-sale.html

"Ovidiu Mot, my husband, had left the premiere of the play "The Seagull"( director Andrei Serban). On his way home he was hit and robbed. He went into coma. At the Sibiu hospital he was ignored and his diagnosis was established without medical tests. The MRI of the hospital was broken. Although the neurologist was on guard he didn't come all night long.

I remember that at 6 o'clock in the morning I was desperately phoning , trying to find a helicopter to bring my husband in a hospital with a functional MRI. The weather conditions were not good for flight so he was brought to Targu-Mures with three ambulances !!!! He was intubated and intubated again three times because this is the law- the SMURD helicopters are not allowed to outrun the frontiers of a town. For whom is this law? Not for Ovidiu or the people who need to reach a destination quickly.

We lost important time on the road. It was very cold, the wind was raging from all parts and I couldn't do anything. My husband was covered with a blanket .He was almost dead. He was operated on after 17 hours. This way my life with Ovidiu ended.

And his life...he does not have a life anymore. He was a father and a husband and a son and an actor and a friend ..now he lies helpless in a bed , he cannot play with his child anymore , he cannot help his parents anymore, he cannot hold me in his arms and he cannot act or enjoy life as he used to do.

After three months after the incident Ovidiu went out the coma. With difficulty we had small but important progresses. Ovidiu learned how to breath without the machines , he learned how to munch , to swallow or to talk.

When our friends come at the hospital to visit him I am the translator...from Romanian into Romanian...

Since January 2007 he is turned over a side and another at every two hours. I still hope that someday he will be able to move again, to use his hands or to stay in a wheel chair.

I hope that one day he will not depend totally on somebody else anymore.

He sometimes looks at me and smiles...he smiles as he used to do. This lasts a second or two and I am so happy that I don't know how to keep those moments of tranquility!

After those moments...when for a second or two I forget..I realize I have to learn how to live without Ovidiu.

He lies in a hospital bed , with his parents all the time around him, and he is sometimes visited by friends.

Ovidiu advanced more than the doctors predicted .The most important thing is that he is ALIVE. This is a miracle. I cannot help myself thinking God still has plans with him. The doctors didn't give him any hope last year so the fact that he is now alive makes me think he still has a mission here, on Earth.

This year was a hard period for me. I learned how to raise my child alone, I learned that single mothers never cry. I understood that the hope is the most important but there are moments when you forget about it and then you feel lost.

Bogdan, our son, was three years old when all happened . and unfortunately he had a good memory. Now, after a year and four months he still tells me ..."If my daddy lets me"...Our child has never laughed as he used to laugh when Ovidiu entered the door. And for a mother this really hurts.

On New Year's Eve, in 2006-2007 we made plans for the next year. Ever since I was a little girl, acting has always been a passion of mine. Whether, it was by participating in the local theater or making my own home made talk show with my mother's video camera.

I was born in 1985 and raised by my mother in Port Arthur, Texas. I started acting in small roles in plays for my local theater like: Cinderella, Peter Pan, and The Poor Little Rich Girl. However, it wasn't until I was about thirteen, when I realized that being in front of the camera was where I wanted to be. I auditioned for a commercial for my local mall, and luckily, I landed the leading role. With this, I was able to get my first taste of working on camera; and have been hooked ever since.

Throughout high school, I was very active in my school's speech team. I competed in state division for serious and comedic prose. In 2001, I was given a part as a featured extra for an independent film called "Vince Del Rio", shot in Austin, Texas. That was my first time on an actual movie set and I enjoyed seeing a film being made from behind the scenes. I couldn't wait to possibly make this into a career, following graduation.

Unfortunately, it has taken a few years and several "life-stepping stones", to get me to a point in my life where I could pursue acting again. I am super siked about portraying Marcia in the short film. I feel that she is the perfect character for me to play on my short film debut. I've already learned so much and we've only had two rehearsals.

Brad (the director) has been great at explaining what his vision is for the film and I have enjoyed working with him! It will be great to see Marina's screenplay to finally come alive. This will be a great experience and I can not wait to begin filming.

Best Wishes,

Kristyn Elyse

What a month!

Hi,

May has been a fruitful month. We've held three more auditions since the first one that I reported and we are finding some excellent talent city-wide. Rehearsals are going well. I am so proud of these young actors as we work together toward our first day of shooting. We're still scheduling locations. Once we lock some dates in at our locations, we'll post the shooting schedule and our actors will be able to zero in and prepare for their day in front of the lens.

Speaking of lenses, Randy, our Director of Photography has an exceptional camera rig. He uses a Panasonic HVX200 with a Red Rock M2 lens adapter with 35mm Nikon lenses. We will be able to create an excellent Broadcast Quality picture with that set up. The M2 allows us to further exploit the language of the cinema and 35mm motion picture production.

The HVX can be used without a tape and will record at a higher resolution and color depth to solid state P2 cards than other "high-definition" cameras. You see, there are several high-resolution formats and the HVX is a good choice due to it's solid state recording technology and it's variable frame rates. It's a solid package.

That reminds me. I really should get a bio from Randy.

Talk to you later,

Brad Ferrell

www.angelisdigitalstudio.com

Shooting Schedule

Hi,

There is another production, Blur, I am involved in and we have been auditioning these last two weekends for it and I have been busy. I do have some photographs coming up from the rehearsals, so look for those here.

I have completed a Shooting Schedule. On my shooting schedule I ordered the scenes first by location, then taking into account which actors we would be using, by actor. This gave me a chronographic view of any day for any location which I could use to schedule the shooting of the film.

With this film, I am expected to use 8 or 9 extras and there is no need to hold up 9 extras waiting to shoot 20 shots, for a 6 shot sequence with 2 actors in it.

When I found I have too many shots at one location, we split the shoot into a two-day shoot to make things easier for us on set.

It's funny. On the one hand, you have all of these charts and schedules and technologies and on the other the film is a work of art. Making a film is a real challenge, especially if it's of any length. The more you have to shoot, the more you have to plan, schedule and accomodate.

Now, I've got some wardrobe decisions to make and I need to discuss a lighting strategy with the DP. More rehearsals too. I've studied and produced animation and it's helpful for me to develop the script into images if I think of the characters as abstractly as I would a drawn or 3D character. The camera is a character in the film too and has a language all of it's own. The camera is your best friend in telling your story as it has an exclusive look into your world.

For Example: You can isolate someone, good or bad, by isolating them in the frame. Further isolating them with selective focus, with color, with a Close-Up. The list can go on but I think you get the idea. You could also do the reverse to achieve the opposite result.

If the character needs to be scene as part of a group, you could include several of his friends with him in a shot. They could dressed similarly, style or color or both.

I use over-the-shoulder shots when I need to keep my distance from a character. I use Wide Shots to establish and closeups to isolate. You also want to paint the scene with light and shadows creating direction and motion in the static frame. There should be a sense of balance, even if it is off.

There are wonderful books out there on shot-making and storyboarding. I encourage you to check them out and learn from them. Look under film-making or animation. I found the better books in drawing storyboards for comics or animation. Once you begin understanding the language of film, and of the camera, you'll be able to easily apply the theory behind it and master it.

Brad Ferrell

http://www.angelisdigitalstudio.com/

What is a Color Script?

That's a good question. It's something I took with me from animation.

What I do is take elements in the scene and assign colors to them. It's a way to control the way the environment and costumes interact and also helps elevate the emotional response of the audience.

For example, in the story, the boy leaves one girl for another. When he leaves, he changes colors and leaves his old color behind with his ex and is represented by another set of colors from then on.

You can have alot of fun with it and again this is something that adds value and costs nothing.

I've got to produce a shooting schedule now. Shooting my last film on MiniDV, it was kind of liberating borrowing elements from Feature Film and Television Production and using them in in the shooting of our micro-budget short.

Meet Me in the Park is being shot in High-Definition Digital Video and I thought it wise to incorporate more elements from the production of Feature Film and Television, the shot list and the color script. What I'm shooting for, by doing so, is a higher production value in our film, a more professional product, and greater economy while working with a small camera crew. Also, I feel this allows me more freedom and control as an artist over the emotional impact of the film.

Storyboarding and creating a Shot List are exercises you can do while waiting to shoot and they don't cost you anything. I say this because I meet a lot of people who don't storyboard or plan. The method of shooting we're going for is going to be quite accelerated, picking up shots and going from shot to shot, moving through in a non-linear fashion. This is the method I've chosen to shoot in as it is going to be the most economical, it will save us time.

Now, if you're telling yourself that's not my style, I don't know how to draw, that's an aweful lot of work, remember, by taking the time to do so I'm giving myself more creative control over the picture, it's content, and the emotional impact of its message.

Film acting and stage acting are quite different and the style I've chosen may make it difficult for the stage performer to adapt. Film acting, in my experience is much more subtle and subdued, and down-right manipulative to the audience. That's alright. We are creating entertainment and art, it's ok to be manipulative. Another free technique that will improve the quality of your production is rehearsal. You can really lay a foundation down for the performances and eliminate all questions during a period of rehearsal. That way when you get to the set, everyone is on the same page and you can get through the shots quickly, everyone seeing the big picture already.

I've done a lot of research on filmmaking techniques of all budgets. The fact that we're producing in HD says nothing about the quality of our work. It does give us an opportunity to acheive a much higher production value level and that opens up new markets for us to exhibit and sell in and that is great.

That's all I can say for now but, I'm looking forward to continuing this on going dialogue, giving you a behind the scenes look at the making of Meet Me in the Park.

Brad Ferrell

http://www.angelisdigitalstudio.com/

Shot List Done.

The Shot List was fun. I numbered the frames from the storyboard and then cataloged them according to location. Each scene now has script, storyboard, and shot list. I've never used one before but I can already see how easy it is going to be to communicate with the Director of Photography. Good tool. I recommend making one on your next short if you're not already doing it. I can see how much work this script calls for now. Some scenes have as many as 20 different shots per sequence.

We've set a date for the auditions now. We'll be auditioning actors and actresses at Blur on May 3rd and 4th. That is going to be fun.

I'm going to do some production design and create a color script for the film.

Brad

I've finished the STORYBOARDS!!!

This is a big-deal for me and I did promise you a behind the scenes look at the filmmaking process.

Storyboards...First let me tell you what we've done for the last month and half.

Once I recieved the script from Marina, I read through it a couple of times. Originally, I was waiting on a different script from Marina. I felt, "two lonely people", the original name of the script, was too long and I was looking for something shorter to shoot as it would not take as much time or resources.

I read many other scripts, about 20, before I decided on the script for "Meet Me in the Park." I couldn't find anything of similar quality, so I committed to the length and took on the project.

I took the script and began sorting the scenes into locations. I was budgeting time for the film. Although the script is 18 pages long, it only takes place in 4 or 5 locations. That was good. It's always time consuming to move cast, crew, and equipment from location to location.

After that I started reading through the script to see if there was anything we needed to cut and surprisingly there was very little. The script is pretty tight and the dialogue only needs a little polish.

Then, I began the storyboards, drawing a small thumbnail image of each of my shots and noting the action and dialogue in the scene. Alfred Hitchcock said that his films were basically finished once the storyboards were drawn. At this point I'm still open to interpretation, but I do plan on going through and refining the storyboards on a second pass this week.

Auditions will be held at the end of the month. I want for word of the cast session to get out and that is going to take a little time. I think between Randy's websites and Craigslist I should be able to see about 50 people.

That is where I am at right now. I'll get some information on Randy for the blog. He's a DP and were working together now and I have plans for him to shoot the film. He has a proper HD camera with a 35mm lens adapter. Nice look for the film.

Later,

Brad Ferrell

http://www.angelisdigitalstudio.com/

Other Meet Me websites to check out.

Hi Everyone,

Brad here. We'll keep updating new information as it comes in.

Best,

Brad Ferrell

http://www.angelisdigitalstudio.com/

A Message From Marina

Hello,

I am Marina Rasnoveanu, the Romanian screenwriter of "Meet Me in the Park". First of all I would want to tell you that everyone who has a dream should watch this movie, because it is the proof that wishes come true. This is "Meet Me in the Park" for me: a hope turned into reality.

I started writing since childhood but only last summer I had the idea of starting writing scripts. Then I realized that in our world you get to someone’s heart easier through images and words. Maybe a book is more romantic, when you read a paper book, not an e-book, you have certain magic feelings, but we should accept the fact that nowadays people are not so willing to read.

As far as my education or studies in the writing field I must say I graduated Letters and Sciences University from my town, Ploiesti, and I didn’t attend any writing courses. This field is not so developed in Romania so everything I learned was from the internet. That was the way I found Brad Ferrell. He post an add on Craiglist and I sent him a CV and a logline. After reading my script he agreed on directing it.

Even if I am so far away, in Romania, our co-operation is perfect and I am sure the movie will be a success. Brad tells me how the things are going and we talk about the scenes and emotions one should bring to the viewer.

I know there are some who believe that a script should be written based on what you know, based on reality, but I belong the category that thinks a movie should make us dream, should make us see the story of life. After watching a movie a viewer should remain with some thoughts or feelings. I hope this impact will have "Meet Me in the Park".

I should tell you how I start writing this script. Last fall I was watching a program about drug addicts and a young man phoned to talk about his experience. I felt him so sincere and so relieved of letting go that part in his past that I understood somehow the behind meaning of such experience. When you are alone or neglected, confused or sad you do meaningful and stupid things even if you are a good person. From that event all started but of course when I started writing other elements came to my mind: love, forgiveness, different worlds etc, things that in the end had the same name "Meet Me in the Park".

It is true that I wrote this script so you must think it is my duty to praise it. See the movie and only then you will realize it is about life and about us, about the hidden feelings of thoughts that sometimes are smothered because we might think life is too serious or too hard to let them go, to let them burst.

Marina

Welcome to the "Meet Me in the Park" Official Blog

Hi,

My name is Brad Ferrell and I'm an independent filmmaker living in Houston, Texas. Hoping to find a short script online I put an ad in Craigslist. I recieved many responses and I decided on a short script called "two lonely people" by a Romanian writer, Marina Rasnoveanu. You'll be hearing more from her later.

I then asked two Producers I know in town to help me with the production of the film, Te-Jui Fu and William Miller III. Te-Jui is also an Origami artist and William and he both have a background in the Art Gallery business, having opened and managed several galleries both here in Houston and in Atlanta, Georgia.

At this point, we are looking to hold auditions in a couple of weeks and then onto rehearsals, and then shooting in May. I will be directing the short film and I look forward to meeting the new talent and helping tell a story you will all be touched by.

Without spoiling the ending of the story for you, "Meet Me in the Park" is both a dramatic and a romantic vignette about a young man named Casey. I'll just leave it at that for now, but it is a story that will touch your heart at the end.

Until later,

Brad Ferrell

http://www.angelisdigitalstudio.com/
