In the blood most of the food we eat is broken down into glucose sugar. Diabetes is also an important development issue because it has a large economic impact. In higher-income countries, more than half of those with diabetes are older than 65 years. Diabetes is a serious disease, which can lead to heart problems, strokes, loss of limbs due to poor circulation, and death. Research continues to indicate that regular exercise and a healthy diet are two factors, which can help people, avoid diabetes, as well as allow diabetics to have functional lives.

One in five deaths of people younger than 25 is caused by diabetes. The diabetes prevalence varies with age, but among older Latinos over 50, the rate is higher, with more or less one in every five Latinos afflicted from diabetes. Diabetes is a disease that occurs when a persons body does not make enough insulin or cannot use insulin properly. When you have diabetes, the sugar builds up in your blood instead of moving into the cells. Diabetes is regarded as a partial or complete lack of insulin production by the body. The most common forms of diabetes are type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is most often diagnosed in children and teenagers, and for this reason was once called juvenile onset diabetes. However, people of all ages can be diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes, which predominantly occurs before the age of 20, results from antibodies inexplicably attacking and destroying the pancreas, the internal organ near the stomach that produces insulin. The cause of type 1 is not entirely known, but, for some [genetic, viral, or environmental] reason, antibodies are produced that mistakenly identify the pancreas as a foreign body that must be destroyed.

Insulin is a hormone that helps your body control the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood. Type 2 diabetes is a disease in which your pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or your body does not properly use the insulin it makes. Insulin stimulates cells to absorb enough glucose from the blood for the energy, or fuel, that they need. Insulin also stimulates the liver to absorb and store any glucose that is left over. Insulin works like a key that opens the doors to cells and allows the glucose in. Without insulin, glucose cannot get into the cells (the doors are "locked" and there is no key) and so it stays in the bloodstream.
Diabetes is a disease that develops when the body does not make enough insulin or cannot use the insulin it makes. The pancreas gland makes insulin. Diabetes is also an important factor in accelerating the hardening and narrowing of the arteries (atherosclerosis), leading to strokes, coronary heart disease, and other large blood vessel diseases. This is referred to as macro vascular disease.
The body will lose its main source of fuel if the blood contains large amounts of sugar. Due to these build up of glucose in the blood, it overflows and passes out of the body in the urine. The liver produces glucose from the digestion of carbohydrate, which is contained in foods, and drinks. Starchy foods such as bread, potatoes, and chapattis, fruit, dairy products, sugar and other sweet foods, are sources from which carbohydrates is produced.
The glucose generated from food is helped with the insulin to get into the cells. If your body does not manufacture enough insulin, or the insulin does not work the way it should, glucose will not get into the cells.

Juan Mudra has been online for a few years and writes about many unique topics like Bible Verses KJV and contributes reviews on a wide range of consumer products. The best they can do when dealing with this dreaded disease is to limit the damage by controlling their blood sugar and living a more disciplined life.
The latest figures released by the American Diabetes Association show that 17 million Americans are suffering from diabetes. These patients need proper advice and an authentic medical outlet for obtaining their diabetes supplies. Already scores of vendors have set up shops, both offline and online, to provide diabetes supplies. The insurance companies too have got into the act and have drawn up a list of items for which policy holders can make claims.

The diabetes patients, depending upon their condition and the kind of medication prescribed, need to keep a proper stock of the following supplies:
Insulin, Insulin Pumps and Syringes: Insulin is generally prescribed when a diabetes patient has exhausted all the traditional channels of medication. Unfortunately once a patient has began taking insulin it will be difficult to stop. Fortunately, the patient need not visit a pharmacy or hospital to receive their medications. If insulin is required it can be taken directly either by injecting it through a syringe or by using an insulin pump.
The various devices available for dispensing insulin include: insulin delivery syringes, insulin pens, jet injectors, external insulin pumps, implantable insulin pumps and insulin inhalers. Convenience and cost will be major factors determining which method is chosen..
It is important to know where to find your medications. Some types of insulin must be purchased either from a pharmacy or a drug company.
Blood Glucose Meter, lancets and testing strips: Every diabetes patient must buy a blood glucose meter. It is also important to stock a full supply of lancets and testing strips in order to test blood sugar levels regularly. There are a variety of testing meters available on the market, the leading brands being OneTouch, Accu-Chek and FreeStyle. Testing your blood sugar is an important part of controlling diabetes because it helps regulate sugar levels. You should never compromise on they type of meter you choose and should try to always carry it with you.

Emergency Supplies: Diabetes patients must always carry on their person a small amount of glucose that can be taken whenever there is an attack of hypoglycemia. You should also try to keep sweet juice, honey or candy at easily accessible places at your office or home for such emergencies.
It is also recommended that you wear a medic alert bracelet on the off-chance that you are unable to advise people of your condition in a medical emergency.

With this proven system you to can lower your blood sugar level and retake control of your health and your life.Through a real life crisis Julia figured out how to live diabetes free.

Diabetes, Diet and Exercise

Education regarding exercise, proper nutrition, and preventative care are an ever increasing necessity in a society facing afflictions from ailments and disease. Many of these afflictions, such as diabetes, can be prevented, or managed with proper guidance. Our lifestyle choices often play a major role in our overall health and well being.
Diabetes is a condition in which the body does not make, makes too little, or can't properly utilize insulin (a hormone produced in the pancreas responsible for regulating the level of glucose).

This results in hyperglycemia, or excessive amounts of blood sugar. If not properly managed, diabetes may increase the risk of heart disease, kidney disease, gangrene, hypertension, and stroke.
Some of the symptoms of diabetes are blurred vision, increased hunger, increased thirst, constant fatigue/lethargy, headaches, and frequent urination.
Complications of diabetes
Excessive blood sugar may have a strong negative impact on kidneys and the liver, which may result in kidney disease and liver disease respectively.
Circulatory problems caused by diabetes may result in damage to nerves. Clogging (and "furring up") of blood vessels may occur if hypertension and high cholesterol exist in the individual. This could result in damage to the heart, legs, brain, and other parts of the body that have large blood vessels.
Types of diabetes
Type I (insulin dependent)
Type I diabetes; also know as juvenile diabetes, is a condition in which the body does not produce insulin, therefore it has to be administered. It is usually diagnosed in children and young adults. Checking glucose levels and knowing when to take insulin is extremely important. Although incurable, proper nutrition and exercise, which we will discuss later, are ways to manage this type.
Type II (insulin non-dependent)
In cases of type II diabetes, the body does not make enough insulin, or it cannot use the insulin properly. It is often diagnosed in overweight adults. Cases of this type are diagnosed significantly more than type I. living a healthy, active lifestyle may help to prevent this type; individuals who have developed type II diabetes may be able to reduce, or alleviate themselves of the disorder altogether by living a healthy lifestyle.
Gestational diabetes
Gestational diabetes occurs in women that are pregnant, and although it usually subsides after giving birth, it may indicate an increased risk of the individual eventually developing type II diabetes if steps to avoid it aren't taken.
According to the Centers for disease control, diabetes affects approximately 24 million people in the United States (according to the projection conducted in the year 2007).
Weight loss and diabetes
An important aspect of managing diabetes is managing weight. Reducing excess weight and keeping body fat low has been shown to reduce (or, in some cases eliminate) risk associated with the disorder in type II.
The importance of proper nutrition
Carbohydrates

There are three types of carbohydrates; low glycemic (complex, or slow burning carbs), high glycemic (simple, or fast burning carbs), and dietary fiber (indigestible part of vegetation).
Examples of carbohydrate sources to include in a meal plan.

Oats

Leafy green vegetables

Whole grains

Vegetables such as broccoli, carrots, and green beans

fruits

Carbohydrate intake should revolve around activity level and consist of low glycemic foods. By spreading carbohydrates out throughout the day, and using activity level to aid in calculating the caloric need for carbs (checking glucose with a glucometer is the primary way), those with diabetes could avoid a rise (hyperglycemia), or fall (hypoglycemia) of blood sugar.
Fats
There are four types of fat; saturated fat, unsaturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol.
When planning meals, focus should be placed on unsaturated fats. While saturated and trans fats have a negative impact on blood pressure and cholesterol, healthy, unsaturated fats actually have a tendency to raise HDL's (good cholesterol)levels.
Keep dietary cholesterol low to avoid raising LDL's (bad cholesterol)
Examples of fat sources to include in a meal plan.

Olive oil

Canola oil

Nuts/seeds

Avocados

Protein
Protein is responsible for building muscle and plays a large role in keeping the body in an anabolic (or "building up") state.
Although intake amounts vary per individual, protein should be consumed with every meal.
Examples of protein sources to include in a meal plan.

Fish

Poultry

Legumes

nuts

Exercise and diabetes
In addition to potential fat loss, (this could result in healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels), exercise promotes better cardiovascular and circulatory health. This lowers the risk of diabetic complications.
It's a good idea to test glucose levels before and after training. This aids in determining dietary needs, as well as the best exercise intensity level.
Proper training
Those with type I diabetes should keep workouts short (20-30 minutes) and of a low to moderate intensity to avoid drastic changes in blood sugar level.
Example exercise routine (type I)
M- 15 minutes of moderate cardio (treadmill), dumbbell press 15 reps x 2 sets, cable pull downs 15 x 2sets, cable fly's 15 x 1 set
T- 10 minutes low-moderate cardio (treadmill), leg extensions 15 x 2 sets, leg curls 15 x 2 sets; squats 20 x 1 set, lunges 15 x 1 set calf raises 20 x 2 set
W-20 minutes low intensity cardio (treadmill) bicep curls 10 x2 sets, overhead press 15 x 1 set, forward later raise 10 x 1 set, side lateral raise 10 x 1 set
TH- squats 10 x 2 sets, lat pull downs 15 x3 sets; bent over row 10 x 1 set, dead lift 10 x 1 set,
F- 20 minutes of moderate
SA- off
S- Off
Those with type two may find a longer work out of 45-60 minutes to be more beneficial, it could help them achieve a greater level of fat loss. Excess body fat may have contributed to the disorder, so by lowering their body fat percentage, they may be able to control, or rid themselves of the disease.
Example exercise plan (type II)
M- 15 minutes low intensity cardio, 20 minutes of moderate cardio, 10 minutes low intensity cardio
T-bench press 15 reps x 3 sets; incline bench press 15 x 2 set; decline bench press 15 x 2 set; cable pull downs 15 x 2sets; triceps extensions 10 x 2 sets; cable flies 10 x 2; 10 minutes low intensity cardio
W-15 minutes low intensity cardio, 25 minutes moderate cardio, and 10 minutes low intensity cardio
TH-lat pull downs 10 x 2, overhead press 10 x 2, seated cable row 15 x 2, forward lateral raise 10 x 2, side lateral raise 10×2, bicep curls 10 x 3, preacher curls 10×2, shoulder shrugs 15 x 2
F- Squats 15 x 2, leg extensions (single leg) 10 x2, leg extensions (both legs) 10 x 2, leg curls 10 x 3, calf raises 15 x 3, 10 minutes of low intensity cardio
SA-15 minutes low intensity cardio, 30 minutes moderate cardio, and 15 minutes low intensity cardio
S-off
A full workout plan is determined after performance of these types of plans for 1 week (unless changes are needed sooner). Heart rate, glucose levels, ability to perform each task, as well as clients exercise preferences will all play a role in writing a suitable workout schedule.
The choices we make play a big part in our overall health; by living a healthy lifestyle, you greatly increase your chances of preventing, managing, or even eliminating diabetes.

Healthy Eating Tips For Diabetics

Managing blood sugar is a matter of life or death for diabetics, but most people simply take it for granted because their body will do it automatically. This is not the case for diabetics. If you are diabetic you need to learn how to work with your body to help it maintain a balanced blood sugar level. For diabetics, healthy eating is a life or death matter.
Ensure that each meal or snack contains lean protein, good complex carbohydrates and as little fat as possible. Reduce or eliminate your intake of "bad" carbohydrates such as sugary sweets and starchy grains, breads and potatoes.

Be mindful of your intake of certain 'bad' fats (animal fats are especially bad).
Eat a small meal or snack every 2 to 3 hours - going too long between meals is very bad for diabetics. Consult with your doctor or a diabetic educator to learn what is the best choice for you regarding meal timing.
Carefully plan out your portion sizes at meals and snacks. Too much or too little can dramatically impact the fluctuations of your glucose levels. A dietician can show you how to properly measure your portions. A rule of thumb for protein (in the form of lean meat) is a serving about the same size as a deck of cards.
Here are more healthy eating and cooking tips for diabetics. Avoid deep fried foods - the extra fat is no good for you. Instead grill or broil your meats and vegetables - and drain off the excess liquids. Use a cooking spray instead of butter, or else use a small amount of vegetable oil.
Avoid adding sugar to foods for flavoring, instead use other spices and flavorings such as lemon juice, mustards, herbs, spices, garlic, extracts such as vanilla or almond, vinegar, peppers, salsa. Whenever a recipe calls for oil, use canola or olive oil.
Back off the extra fats. Trim fat off meats, take the skin off chicken and turkey. Use reduced-fat salad dressings and mayonnaise and cheese. Use skim or low-fat milk, cheese, and dairy products such as yogurts.

Any fat that turns to solid when cooled should be avoided. This includes lard and shortening as well as bacon fat and butter.
If you're going to eat out - plan ahead before you go. This is especially true if you are taking insulin or diabetic pills. Avoid fried foods and extra salt. Ask for any sauces to be served on the side. Avoid starchy carbs and sugary sweets. Before drinking alcohol, discuss it with your doctor.
These tips are helpful for diabetics but nothing can take the place of asking your doctor personally. Visit with your doctor or diabetic educator if you have further questions about diabetes and diet.

Diabetes Foot Care

   Knowledge Is The Key

When you were first diagnosed with diabetes, were you given instruction on how to take care of your feet on a daily basis? Chances are that you were given limited information in this very important area. The most common reason is because you and your health care professional were mainly focused on getting your blood sugar down to an acceptable range. I am a health care professional working in the diabetes education field and foot care is one area that I really stress when I talk to my clients with diabetes.
Why?

Because I have seen the damaging effects of poor foot care. These damaging effects include chronic foot ulcers that can lead to disability and in some cases, amputation.
My goal is to educate as many people as I can about how to care for your feet. The more you know about foot care, the less chance you will have in developing foot ulcers now and in the future.
Let's start with daily care.
One of the things that are important in diabetes foot care is that you have to do it on a daily basis. Whether it is when you first get up in the morning to take a bath or shower or whether it is in the evening. The important thing is that you need to do this EVERY DAY. Very much the same way that you are checking your blood sugar every day. It needs to become part of your daily routine.
Your Daily Foot Care Routine.
1. Wash your feet in warm (never hot) water, using a mild non-perfumed soap If you have diminished sensation in your hands and feet, you can use your elbow to test the temperature of the water or you can go out and get a bath thermometer. Never soak your feet, as this can dry your skin making it prone to crack.
2. While your feet are still wet, use a pumice stone to keep calluses under control making sure you don't rub too hard.
3. Dry your feet carefully, especially between your toes. Some people whose feet perspire find comfort in applying a little powder in between the toes.

4. Thoroughly check your feet and between your toes on a daily basis to make sure there are no cuts, cracks, ingrown toenails, blisters, etc. If you are unable to easily inspect your feet, use a hand held mirror to see the bottom of your feet. If you are still having difficulty, ask someone else to check them for you.
5. Always clean cuts or scratches with mild soap and water, and cover with a dry dressing suitable for sensitive skin.
6. Trim your toenails straight across and file any sharp edges. Don't cut the nails too short.
7. Apply lotion to your heels and soles, preferably lotion that does not have perfume in it. Wipe off any excess lotion that is not absorbed. Don't put lotion between your toes, as the excessive moisture can promote infection.
8. Wear fresh clean socks and well-fitting shoes every day
I cannot stress it enough; your daily foot care routine along with managing your blood sugar will significantly make a difference between having a good quality of life vs. living with disability. Here are some other guidelines to ensure that your feet remain healthy. I call this my Do's and Don'ts list.
Foot Care Do's And Don'ts
Do wear well-fitting shoes. The shoes should be supportive, have low heels (less than 5 cm high) and should not rub or pinch your feet. It is a good idea to shop at a reputable store with knowledgeable staff that can professionally fit your shoes.
Do wear loose socks at night if your feet get cold.
Do elevate your feet when you are sitting.
Do wiggle your toes and move your ankles around for a few minutes several times a day.
Do exercise regularly to improve foot and leg circulation.
Do inspect your feet daily and in particular check for skin temperature differences between your feet.
Don't wear high heels, pointed-toe shoes, sandals (open toe or open heel) or worn-out shoes.
Don't wear anything tight around your legs, such as tight socks or knee-highs.
Don't go barefoot, even indoors. Even if this means buying a pair of shoes for indoors and another pair for outdoors.
Don't put hot water bottles or heating pads on your feet.
Don't cross your legs for long periods of time.
Don't smoke.
Don't have pedicures by non-healthcare professionals.
I hope that this article has been informative and has provided you with good guidelines to take care of your feet. If you take these guidelines and use them on a daily basis, my goal will have been accomplished and you will have been given the opportunity to live your life to the fullest.

Lee Dunn is a healthcare professional working in the Diabetes Education field. Cinnamon: It acts as an antioxidant and half teaspoon of cinnamon powder for around forty days can significantly lower the blood sugar levels.

Five Warning Signs of Diabetes

The dreadful diabetes is definitely treatable but how if we could actually detect and avoid it in the first step? If taken the right steps at an early stage, we can actually prevent, delay or even cure diabetes completely. Most of the times, diabetes is detected when it has already laid an impact on the body and the damage has already been done.
However, diabetes does warn you that it is arriving but only if you pay attention to its warnings and symptoms and take proper steps in an early stage.
Diabetes can either be of Type 1, Type 2 or the gestational diabetes (that occurs in pregnancy).

Type 1 diabetes is caused by a virus that attacks and destroys the insulin producing beta cells of the pancreas thus disabling its sugar transporting capacity from the blood to other cells in the body. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type across people and is normally caused due to poor diet, obesity and is also hereditary. It results in a decreased insulin resistance. Gestational diabetes is almost similar to Type 2 diabetes, the only difference being that it is triggered by the hormones of pregnancy.
The top warning signs indicating that diabetes may be around soon are:
1. Frequently going to the bathroom: Excessive urination may be an indication of diabetes as there is too much glucose in the blood. Since the insulin is not effective anymore, the kidneys try to extract water from the blood to dilute the glucose.
2. Weakness and loss of energy: As the insulin is no more effective, the cells are longer able to generate enough energy from the glucose and you tend to feel tired and weak at shorter intervals.
3. Sudden loss of weight: This is an after effect of the second symptom and due to the lack of energy, you can notice a sudden loss of weight. This symptom is more prominent in the Type 1 diabetes and there is a gradual loss of weight in Type 2 diabetes.

4. Numb hands or legs(Neuropathy): Neuropathy is a result of the constant high glucose in the body which affects the nervous system and it normally happens gradually after a few years.
5. Additional symptoms: Itchy or dry skin, infections, cuts and wounds that heal after a long time and blurred vision are also few other symptoms of diabetes. The primary reason for all of them remains the same- increased glucose levels in the body.

Controlling blood sugar levels is an art. One good approach in treating or reversing diabetes without medications is by avoiding obesity. Obesity, as you must know, ranks high as one of the factors predisposing one to Type 2 Diabetes. So if you want to deal with diabetes, you have to deal with obesity issues first. Adults are not the one ones at risk for Type 2 diabetes. Even though this diabetic type is adult onset, more and more children are being afflicted with the disease.

There are a couple of things you can do to avoid obesity, and one is to eat healthy. In these modern times, eating healthy foods is quite impossible. Since most people are in a hurry, they tend to make unwise food choices, going for fast foods, deep-fried foods, and foods that contain very little nutritional value, instead. However, eating the right kinds of food is a must if you want to be healthy.
Another thing you can prevent obesity is by exercising regularly. Yes, it's important that you get your body moving because exercise not just helps to reduce fat cells, they also work like insulin by reducing blood sugar levels in the body.
Remember that with obesity, there's actually too much production of insulin only that the body is not able to make full use of it. What happens, the pancreas continues to produce insulin until the beta cells, the cells responsible in insulin production, get overwhelmed and stop producing insulin altogether.

So when you have a child who sits all day and all night in front of the TV screen or computer monitor, encourage him or her to participate in active play. Get him or her to go out in the sun and play ball with friends, or jog with him or her around the neighborhood. Promote bonding time with your kid while at the same time reducing his chances of acquiring diabetes because of obesity.

The Type 2 Diabetes Explosion!

Explosion, rather a dramatic word to apply to a health condition... but do you know it is really applicable when the condition is type 2 diabetes? Think about an explosion caused by dynamite, someone needs to light the fuse. If that fuse is not lit, the dynamite is useless, it is ineffective, there will be no explosion!
Now, in type 2 diabetes, the fuse may be the food that is available, food that is promoted all over the television and Internet:

the fast foods

the processed foods

the weight loss programs

most packaged health foods

fat-free, low-fat and light foods

prepared fruit juices

commercially prepared soups

hamburgers

tomato paste and more

But who lights the fuse in type 2 diabetes... we do. We are responsible for what we eat, we can't blame anyone else. At this time it is believed type 2 diabetes needs to be in your family, in your genes, for it to become active under the right conditions. The right conditions include being overweight or being obese... having fat around your waistline, around your abdominal area. The consequence of obesity is type 2 diabetes.
Can type 2 diabetes be cured? Can type 2 diabetes be avoided? If your choice of lifestyle is the cause, it sounds like it can at least be avoided and it certainly is not too late even if you have received a definite diagnosis. Recovery starts with you, your choices!

1. Keep a diary of everything you eat and drink for one week... you will soon start to see what you need to change. There's no need to give up foods you love, just reduce the amount.
2. Show in your diary how much physical activity you take part in... buy a pedometer and measure your daily footsteps... aim for 1,000 steps each day to start with.
3. Take small consistent steps towards losing 5 to 10lbs (2.2 to 4.4 kg), then another 5 to 10lbs (2.2 to 4.4kg). Losing more than 2lbs (1kg) a weeks means you are losing muscle, and that's not what you are aiming for... you want to lose fat.
There is an important relationship between food and blood sugar, insulin and fat. The more overweight you are, the more resistant to insulin you become because extra adipose tissue (fat), causes a hormone reaction which is a rise in your body's cortisol. That process then closes your cell's doors and prevents sugar from entering... this sugar has no alternative but to go onto become fat. Lose body fat and your insulin and blood sugar levels will improve.

It's that simple! Don't light the fuse; a healthy lifestyle will stop the type 2 diabetes explosion. Diabetes has effects on the entire body, but some parts suffer worse than others. The place that commonly gets hit hard is the feet and legs. Without proper care and maintenance, the feet can deteriorate and result in serious and alarming health issues. However, there is no need to be scared, because there are ways to prevent serious injury.
First, it would be good to point out that Diabetes can affect the feet in different ways, depending in the individual. Some people experience damaging of the nerves, otherwise known as marginal neuropathy. A side effect of nerve damage is numbness of the feet, which makes detecting damage difficult.

Diabetes also can reduce blood circulation in the feet. Lower blood circulation causes blood to pool in the legs. Proper nutrients and oxygen flow are restricted, and can make healing time from injuries take longer. Poor circulation results in other health conditions that can progress with time into more serious ones. Foot infections are certainly not unheard of in diabetes patients, because the bodies infection resistance is greatly reduced. Ailments like foot ulcers can be a scary prospect, but rest assured that many patients have been through these issues before and have found ways to cope and heal.
Now that you have a little more background on the conditions caused by Diabetes, I will discuss some activities to implement in your daily regimen to prevent or lessen the effects. The number one rule is to maintain good hygiene. Daily washing of the feet are highly recommended, and are highly effective when done with antibacterial soap. Give your feet a good drying with a towel and make sure you get in between the toes. As discussed earlier, Diabetic patients are more prone to infection. Washing and drying the feet keeps fungal infections from starting which in turn keeps you safe. To get extra dry, try using sprinkling some talcum powder over your freshly dried feet for a dry and smooth feeling.
Spend at least a few minutes a day for a close inspection of the feet. Look for any blistering, cuts, bruising or damage in general. If you find any, it is advised that you see your doctor about it. Damages could easily turn into infection if not cared for soon.

To further prevent damage, pay special attention to the shoes you wear. When buying shoes, make sure the fit is comfortable and that there are no bumps or snags that could rub against your feet during the day. Another garment all diabetics should consider is medical compression socks. This is an easy way to improve circulation. Compression socks can be worn throughout the day and help massage the calves to get blood flowing.
As a final note, make sure to keep your toenails well trimmed and clean them underneath. Use care to prevent hangnails and other damages.

Diabetes Complications

Diabetes ultimately leads to a condition called hyperglycemia or high blood sugar, and can affect blood vessels, nerves and other body organs.
(A) Diabetes Affects the Kidneys
The function of the kidneys is to cleanse blood of waste products and excess fluid by filtering blood to produce urine. When the kidneys fail to filter normally, a dangerous accumulation of fluid and wastes happens in the body.
It takes an unusually long period of time (10-20 years) for diabetic persons with kidney disease to develop kidney failure.

However, in most cases, diabetes has already been present years before it is detected, and organ damage may have already started. Persons with diabetes and kidney disease have a higher risk of heart attacks and strokes. Hence, an early detection of diabetes is important to control diabetes and prevent kidney failure.
(B) Diabetes Affects the Eyes
Diabetic retinopathy occurs when diabetes causes blood vessels in the eyes to weaken. Other factors such as smoking, pregnancy and high blood pressure can combine with diabetes to make retinopathy worse. Diabetes can cause the capillaries on the retina to leak or collapse. Fragile new capillaries may the grow on the retine, causing more damage.
Symptoms of Diabetic Retinopathy
A person can have diabetic retinopathy without knowing it as there is no pain or outward sign. As the condition progresses, the vision becomes hazy and blurry. These symptoms may come and go. However, if the condition is severe, clouded vision or blindness may follow.
Treatment
Reduce the the risk of vision loss from diabetic retinopathy by managing diabetes and overall health. Protect your vision by keeping blood sugar level in a health range.
Risk Factors
Factors that can worsen diabetic retinopathy are high blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking.

(C) Diabetes Affects the Heart
Diabetes can cause other problems such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure. people with uncontrolled high blood sugar have a higher incidence of dying of a heart attack or stroke.
The build-up of glucose in the blood affects the lining of the artery walls. Arteries carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body. When a person has high blood sugar, the artery lining becomes damaged. This in turn allows the accumulation of plaque in the arteries.
As the accumulation of plaque narrows the arteries, a blood clot can cut off blood flow resulting in a heart attack.
(D) Diabetes Affects the Feet
Persons with diabetes are more prone to suffer from foot problems and they should pay more attention to any injury to their feet. Frequent bruises and wounds that take an abnormally long time to heal should be checked for early symptoms of diabetes.

Using a Diabetes Planner

Balance in life can be tough, especially when managing a chronic health challenge like diabetes. The reason for this is the shortage of production of a hormone called Insulin produced by the pancreas. Insulin enables cells to absorb sugar (glucose) and process them into energy. When there is a shortage of Insulin in the body, the sugar (glucose) produced in the body is not properly used. This results in excessive sugar production which is not broken into energy. This causes glucose to accumulate in the blood as thus becoming the root cause for various complications related to

Heart, Kidneys etc;
Diet for Diabetes:
Diabetics often complain about the lack of energy in the body. People having Diabetes are prone to major complications and may also result in organ failure. The secret for a Diabetic patient to be healthy is to have proper diet and give the body proper exercise.
The main problem for diabetics is accumulation of excessive carbohydrates in the body. So proper care is to be taken to see that a person with diabetes is active throughout the day, which is possible by consuming small meals multiple times than a single heavy meal. For example, Indians are acquainted to have heavy meals few times a day and rice being the staple food. Rice and other substances are rich in carbohydrates and further aggravate the diabetic condition of the patient. So, a Diabetic must consume meals of small quantity multiple times a day with little carbohydrates and more protein and fiber.
Recipes for Diabetics include whole grain, wheat, vegetables, bread. Meat should be avoided as it has high calorific value. Avoid excess consumption of fruits as they increase the sugar levels in the body.

People with diabetes can opt for wheat, wheat bread, vegetable salads, sandwiches and other vegetable juices at regular intervals. If you have been diagnosed with this disease your treatment has to be designed to reduce your weight and therefore reduce the amount of insulin your body needs. The ideal waist measurement for women is approximately 32 inches or as a maximum under 35 inches.
The girth (maximum waist measurement) is all important as the fat that is particularly rich in the hormones that help to lead to excessive weight tends to be that which is laid down within your abdominal cavity and around your intestines, as well as the superficial fat around the exterior of your abdominal wall that can give rise to the so called apple rather than pear shape.

The first step to reduce girth is to slowly increase your daily, regular brisk but not violent exercise. This decreases the need for insulin and improves your metabolism so that excess calories are burnt up more readily. It is important to exercise for at least 20 minutes per day; the best option would be 30 minutes or longer. However, prior to engaging in strenuous activity it is best to consult with your physician first. It is also important to avoid calorie rich foods and excess fats, especially saturated ones.
Most physicians believe that the glycaemic index is useful therefore they often recommend people who have been diagnosed with obesity and type 2 diabetes buy a booklet that explains glycaemic index the difference in the way the calories taken in the form of highly refined sugars and the complex carbohydrates, such as root vegetables, peas and beans are metabolised. The higher the glycaemic index the more immediate is the effect of the carbohydrate on the blood sugar.
Substances with a high glycaemic index are converted into sugar quickly. A great book that helps with this topic is "The GI factor" published by Hodder and Stoughton. It is written in a readable way by an eminent nutritionist Professor Anthony Leeds and colleagues. Also it is important to avoid added salt.

Don't forget that it is also important to keep a close eye on blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Research has shown that anyone with obesity and type 2 diabetes does better if they take statins, even if their cholesterol, whether or not their overall and/or low density lipoprotein LDL is raised. Although cholesterol comes from our diet, more than 80 per cent of cholesterol in our bodies is made by the liver. Statins will, in effect, slow the action of an enzyme in the liver that plays a key role in the manufacture of cholesterol. This will typically cause the level of blood cholesterol to drop

With this proven system you to can lower your blood sugar level and retake control of your health and your life.Through a real life crisis Julia figured out how to live diabetes free.

Diabetics Over Christmas

Christmas and New Year are times of joy and happiness. It's time to celebrate for everyone. Families and friends get together to enjoy this special festive season and there is every reason for you to enjoy it fully too!
There is a lot of food involved over Christmas and New Year's Eve, a lot of traditional food, which play a huge part in this winter season festivities. Plates full of pies, tasty cheese, pates and sausages, fried potato wedges and vegetables with variety of sauces and dressings, and gorgeous Christmas puddings and a selection of lovely cakes are all very tempting for anyone. But don't worry, you don't have to have a separate plate for your Christmas dinner, just be more cautious about how much and what you eat and don't over do it.

Any traditional festive food will be high in calories, fat and sugar, and won't be healthy for anyone, diabetic or not. And a little extra over Christmas should not affect your long term diabetes control. As you well know, eating to control diabetes isn't just about control of what you eat; it's about balancing your diet, adding variety and not feeling restricted. And certainly during Christmas festive season you should plan ahead. Give some thought to all different options you have and consider what works best for you as an individual.
The main advice is on spreading the food equally throughout the day and indeed throughout the entire Christmas period, not having too much at one meal, keeping close eye on your blood sugar levels, and being sensible. You might want to let your family and friends know how you want to be served, to feel more comfortable and in control. But allow yourself to have some chocolates, cakes and sweets too, only spread them throughout the day and eat them with main meals.
In short think about:
Christmas and New Year are celebrated over a week period so don't eat it all in first couple of days.

Spread your portions throughout the day.
Avoid eating too much at one meal, and too little at next.
Try to avoid sugary drinks, instead have some fresh juice, which will refresh you better and doesn't contain large amounts of sugar.
Enjoy Christmas fruit and vegetables, you can make some lovely salads and have the half plate of vegetables with your Christmas meals.
Keep alcohol intake in moderation and watch your alcohol units
And of course don't forget to take that walk in the evening or into the town to marvel at the Christmas lights and all the festive decorations. You will be doing that important exercise and also walk off the Christmas meal.
Plan well and enjoy your Christmas and New Year!

Diabetes Diet For Diabetes Cure

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder. So it means that along with medicines and exercise, diet too forms a very important part of the treatment plans. Now that leads us to an important question. What foods should a Diabetic eat and what foods should they avoid?
The first tip is to space out all your meals evenly and keep the amount of each serving fairly consistent. As with any other metabolic disorder, remember to eat frequent and small meals, so that the meals are digested properly. Eat more of starches. Now what are the starches which are advisable? Bread, pasta, potatoes, cereals, corn, crackers, rice, yams etc are common starchy foods.

Vegetables are the next in the safe list for Diabetics. Carrots, Beans, broccoli, tomatoes, bitter gourd, okra, celery, beet root, capsicum, cabbage etc are all included in the list.
The best way to eat them is uncooked and raw. Even if you prefer eating them cooked, try to just steam them or still better to just boil them. While using vegetables as salads, keep the dressing to the bare minimum. And no dressing with cream or fat.
Fruits are an important part of a well balanced diet. Vitamins and other essential nutrients are found only in certain fruits. But it is always better to avoid large servings of sweet fruits. Apples, mangoes, guava, peaches, pears, strawberries can be included in your daily diet. But here a special mention about goose berries and blue berries as they have definite blood sugar or blood glucose reducing or lowering properties.
Milk can be had in two ways, both as skimmed milk or fat free milk and as curd. But Curd has to be fat free. Avoid sweets on a daily basis, but tiny servings once in a while should be permissible.

Controlling blood sugar is really an art. Putting the two words together means that excessive sugar in a person's urine is more like excreting honey thorough the urinary tract.
Diabetes is characterized by excessive level of glucose simply termed sugar in blood. These excessive levels are the result of either inadequate amount of insulin or malfunctioning of cells to use the provided insulin.
The disease diabetes mellitus is directly linked to insulin. If someone ate sugar all day and their body had the ability to release and properly use insulin, they would not develop diabetes.

If you have diabetes, then you should avoid sugary foods, as well as too many carbohydrates. Carbohydrates affect the blood sugar more than protein or fat. Excessive quantities of certain starchy vegetables, cereals, and fruit will cause your blood sugar to rise too quickly. Working with a diabetes educator will ensure proper eating habits. Eating properly will not only help your blood sugar, can help you maintain optimal weight.
MYTH 2 - Testing your blood sugar in the morning after fasting is enough to understand patterns and what your A1C represents.
FACT:
You should test your blood sugar at varying times of the day, not just first thing in the morning. An especially important time to test for those people taking insulin prior to meals. Also, one should test their blood sugar two hours after eating their first bite of food. Between the fasting numbers and the postprandial (after meal) numbers, you will have a better idea of what the A1C results really represent. You should test more often when you are ill, have undergone surgery, started an exercise program, and when you start a new medication or change the dosage of medicine.
MYTH 3 - Taking my diabetes pill is all I need to do to control my diabetes and prevent complications.
FACT:
Adding lifestyle changes along with taking your daily medication correctly is the best way to control your diabetes. Lifestyle changes include a minimum of 150 minutes of aerobic activity per week. Activity could include walking, biking, swimming, line dancing and other activities you enjoy. Other "feel good" lifestyle changes include eating smaller portions, reading food labels, and counting carbohydrates. If you have diabetes, then smoking is a No-No! Smoking can worsen many diabetes-related complications including heart and blood vessel disease.
MYTH 4 - Your doctor is totally in charge of your diabetes care.
FACT:
You are 95% responsible for your diabetes care. Your doctor is responsible to coordinate your care and is responsible for medication changes based on your blood work and logbook results. You are responsible to make lifestyle changes, including improving your eating and exercising. You are responsible to take your medication correctly. You are responsible for taking extra special care of your feet, teeth and eyes.

You are responsible for testing blood sugar according to the directions you and your physician have agreed upon. You are responsible for managing your stress. With the extra stress of managing diabetes, you deserve to find ways to relax and have fun.
MYTH 5 - Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) has no real symptoms.
FACT:
Low blood sugar exhibits symptoms in most people who have diabetes. The low blood sugar can be caused by too much medication, too much exercise, or not enough food. The symptoms of hypoglycemia include sweating, shaking, weakness, hunger, dizziness, headache, nausea, visual disturbances, irritability, or fast heart beat. Some people who have had diabetes for several years may not experience any signs of hypoglycemia. This is called hypoglycemic unawareness and can happen because of chemical changes that can mask any symptoms.

Diabetic Diets

Vegetarian diets are an easy way for a diabetic to help regulate their diet. The vegetarian diet balances diabetic diets by assisting you in maintaining a normal level of blood sugar and also includes some extra heath benefits as well.
A vegetarian diet not only stabilizes a diabetic's blood sugar level, but it also enables them to get off their medications, including those who previously had been dependent on insulin injections. Having this much control allows diabetic vegetarians to feel secure knowing that they are indeed eating the correct food to promote their optimal health.

Fiber is a staple in a vegetarian diet and vegetarians consume a larger percentage of fiber than non-vegetarians which helps strengthen their health. Fiber slows down the how the body dispenses of carbohydrates, which helps a diabetic in keeping a stabilized blood sugar level.
Another advantage for a vegetarian diet that diabetics can enjoy is that their overall health will be much better. People who choose vegetarian diets over diabetic diets generally have reduced heart diseases and reduced blood pressure. They also typically have lower cholesterol, lower calorie consumption, and lower saturated fat in the diet while gaining higher levels of and magnesium, potassium and fiber.
So far we have seen that the benefits of vegetarian diets over diabetic diets include having better blood sugar levels and losing weight in a more stable manner when you combine a vegetarian diet with a diabetic diet. Please don't thing that this means you can eat everything you want. Obviously you will still want to watch what you eat since there are some meatless foods which are just as fattening as foods that contain meat.
Please understand that before you make any changes to your eating habits you should consult you're your doctor or a registered dietician. The main thing you will need to get is a list of food replacements for the meat that you used to eat. You really need to do this because meat has protein and you will still need the protein in your new diet.

When changing to this new diet your body will need to take some some time to get used to the changes. I recommend that you try moving into this diet gradually, slowly adding new ingredients and gradually taking away some ingredients. Adjusting this way will help keep your blood sugar levels stable however you want to be sure to check it with your blood sugar tester to keep it at a steady level.
Please know that you can enhance your health, lose weight and maintain a normal blood sugar level by just by integrating a vegetarian diet along with a diabetic diet. When a person is diagnosed to have diabetes, he/she actually has what it is in medical terms as diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus is a condition in which a person's body does not react as how it should in terms of producing and responding to a crucial hormone in our body that is produced by our pancreas. This hormone produced by the pancreas is insulin. And insulin is the hormone that turns the glucose in our bodies to energy that is why it is crucial.

When a person has diabetes, his body does not produce enough insulin or does not respond as it should to insulin or both. And consequently, the glucose in the body that is not turned into energy build up in the blood and this eventually leads to complications. There are many types of diabetes mellitus in medical terms. But the three major types are Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational Diabetes.
Type 1 Diabetes is an effect of the failure of the body to produce enough insulin for the normal routines of the body. This is also called as juvenile diabetes since most of the children who are diagnosed to have diabetes have Type 1 Diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes is caused by the loss of the beta cells in the pancreas that consequently leads to insulin deficiency. And also, in the early stages of Type 1 Diabetes, the patient responds properly to insulin. Type 1 Diabetes patients often needs insulin injections.
Type 2 Diabetes is an effect of the body's resistance to insulin in which the body cells use insulin improperly or fail to respond properly to insulin. This type of diabetes usually starts with a condition that is medically termed as Pre-diabetes in which the level of blood glucose in a person's body is more than what is normal. Type 2 Diabetes usually comes unnoticed. More physical activity and weight losing can be a treatment of this type of diabetes.

Gestational diabetes is the type of diabetes among pregnant women who have high levels of blood glucose or sugar and who had never been diagnosed of diabetes before. This type of diabetes can be completely treated although it requires thorough medical supervision during the pregnancy period. The first line of treatment that is usually applied in 90% of people with type 2 who are overweight or obese, is to implement a weight loss plan where there is a change in diet and an increase in physical activity.
These are lifestyle tips to help you achieve blood sugar levels as close to normal as possible:

1. Fiber is the unsung hero of type 2 diabetes. Research shows foods high in fiber, especially soluble fiber, slows the absorption of glucose into your bloodstream ... this helps with control of your blood sugar levels. Fiber also helps to satisfy your hunger, maintain a healthy weight and lowers your cholesterol levels.
2. Eat plenty of high-fiber, non starchy fruits including cherries, kiwi fruit, apples, and fruits in the berry family, eg. blueberries, blackberries. They contain lots of vitamins and minerals as well as fiber.
3. People who eat the most vegetables have the lowest long-term risks associated with type 2 diabetes. Non-starchy, high-fiber vegetables are best as they are high in nutrients and contain the least carbohydrates. The fiber in vegetables blunts your body's response to naturally occurring sugar.
4. Low glycemic index (low-GI) foods ... certain foods have an especially low-GI value: beans and other legumes, green leafy vegetables, most fruits, barley (great in soup).
5. Eat healthy oils and fats ... virgin olive oil, flaxseed oil, avocados and nuts are known to lower your risk for both blood sugar problems and cardiovascular conditions.

6. The most common cooking oils ...corn, safflower, cottonseed, soybean, peanut oil and any type of partially hydrogenated vegetable oil increase your risk of becoming overweight. They all interfere with normal insulin function and alter the regulation of your blood sugars.
7. Kidney, pinto or lima beans, are packed with soluble fiber and will blunt the entry of sugar into your bloodstream. Soluble fiber also helps to lower your LDL (bad) cholesterol.
8. Eating small meals more often, at regularly timed intervals, will give you much better blood sugar control rather than infrequent large meals. Large meals cause more sugar to enter your bloodstream quickly and make it difficult for your pancreas to produce insulin in proportion to the amount you eat at each sitting. Research show type 2 diabetics who eat smaller meals more often, make better food choices eating less sugary foods and less calories.
9. Moderate exercise helps your muscle cells become sensitive to insulin. Insulin is the hormone that transports blood sugar out of your bloodstream and into your cells. Gradually increasing your activity to thirty minute sessions five or six times per week can often lower your blood sugar levels by fifty or more points. Exercise is really protective when used in conjunction with a low-GI eating plan.
High insulin and blood sugar levels can be looked on as the result of taking in more food than the body can really manage ... so cutting back really will lessen the burden!

To see how your body responds to various foods, do a little detective work of your own. And don't forget to take portion sizes into account ... these can have a huge effect on your blood sugar levels.
To download your free copy of my E-Book, click here now: Answers to Your Questions it's based on questions diabetics have asked me over recent months.
Beverleigh Piepers is a registered nurse who would like to help you understand how to live easily and happily with your type 2 diabetes.

How to Lower Blood Sugar Levels - Simple Tips

Lowering blood sugar levels is not a tough task and is in fact easier than most people think. Imbalance in sugar levels in a person is termed as hyperglycaemia and this is also leads to diabetes. Thus keeping the glucose level intact can thus prevent lots of diseases and can keep your body healthy. There are simple yet efficient techniques that one can follow to get this done than going for medication and over the counter drugs.
Regular exercise as a means to lower the blood sugar levels
One of the most common ways to reduce or lower the glucose levels in your body is to exercise regularly. Though people are aware of these, they tend to be lethargic and give up after a week or two. Anything takes its time to shower the benefits and exercises can provide you the best only when they are practiced regularly.

Exercises do not mean strenuous ones such as weight lifting. They can be as simple as walking, jogging, aerobics. Studies have proved that walking just 30 minutes a day can help you keep your blood glucose levels in tact.
Laughter as medicine to maintain blood sugar levels
You may laugh after reading the previous line. But the irony is that, but doing that you have made an effort to reduce the blood sugar level in your body. Strange, but its true. A recent study by Japanese researchers has shown that laughter can prove to be an effective natural medicine in maintaining the blood glucose levels in a person. When you laugh, your body secretes a chemical that acts the substitute for glucose. Thus when you laugh you body tends to add more of this and keeps your glucose levels normal. Relaxation along with laughter can results in even better results.

Controlling blood sugar levels is an art. It may be the risk of side effects, the delivery methods (eg injection) or just simply not wanting to use chemical methods to solve their medical dilemmas. With the amount of funding put into medical research, there is definitely no lack of these alternative natural treatments and cures.
Diabetes is an extremely common disease, affecting tens of million of people in the United States alone. It has several types which effect sufferers in different ways.

Given these facts, you would expect that huge amounts of resources would be devoted to research and development for treatments and cures. This is definitely the case, which has also made a variety of natural diabetes treatment available to the public.
Diabetes has been linked to several causes. These include genetics, nutritional deficiency, obesity, a diet high in carbohydrates, lack of exercise and stress. The disease is characterized by high levels of blood sugar or glucose. This also results in the excretion of excess sugars in the urine. Problems stem directly from insulin deficiency, as insulin plays the vital role of controlling blood glucose levels.
While all problems are insulin related, the different types of diabetes refer to the different ways which insulin levels are affected. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body stop producing or produces lower levels of insulin. This is often related to problems with the pancreas itself. With type 2 diabetes, the body is not as able to use the insulin which has been produced. You must ensure that you take plenty of fluid during exercise. Your body uses plenty of fluid during exercise for cooling purpose and thus you must replenish the fluid to avoid dehydration.

You should take complete control of your life.
