Spear fishing is a fascinating activity which entails diving under water and hunting selected species of fish with the help of a spear gun. Spear fishermen dive without the help of scuba diving equipment and hunt the fish in their environment; this makes the activity very challenging and natural. Spear fishing is in fact one of the most environmentally friendly fishing techniques as divers see their pray before hunting it and only catch adult fish. Spear fishermen typically catch only a few fish for dinner and by law are prohibited from selling any fish.

How to Skin Dive

If you love snorkelling and want to take it further then a great way to get closer to the fishes is skin diving, or you may no it as free diving. Skin Diving is where you hold your breath and dive down for prolonged periods without the aid of Scuba equipment.

Here are some basic safety tips when snorkelling. Stick by these and you will have a more pleasurable snorkel, and the underwater life will be thankful you respected their homes!

Don’t Paddle or throw things in the rock pool
– remember it’s a creatures home!
Always put rocks back in the same place and
way up that they were found.
Be very gentle with animals, and if you pick them up, return them carefully to their place.
Don’t take any living things away with you.
Don’t pull seaweed off the rocks.
Don’t try to kick or pull limpets off the rocks.
Don’t frighten seabirds – give them some space.
Always take you litter home with you.
Take your time, don’t rush or run about.
Keep an eye on the tide so you don’t get cut off .
Don’t get too close to the cliffs.
Keep away from the soft mud and quicksand.
Wash your hands before you put your fingers
in your mouth or eat anything.

Kits for Kids

Cressi have bought out two new snorkelling kits for kids this summer, the Sirenetta Mare Set and the Medusa Mare Set. Both of these mask and snorkel combos feature the Cressi Minigringo snorkel which is a flexible, standard bore tube snorkel complete with a sliding elastic clip to attach it to your mask and a soft silicone mouthpiece that swivels to guarantee perfect positioning.

The Sirenetta Mask provides a great seal to fit most face shapes and its soft hypoallergenic transparent silicone provides comfort and a good field of vision.

The Medusa Mask has two separate lenses and is made from transparent Silflex with an inner seal ring to provide comfort and an excellent seal on most face types.

There are two great new accessories now available for the Fuji Z33WP snorkellers camera designed to keep the camera much safer. Which lets face it is always a good thing. It’s bound to take a knock or slip from your wrist at some point!

Firstly there is the Silicone casing designed to add a bit more protection from knocks and scrapes. Being made from silicone its also extremely grippy, so its less likely to slip from your hands when wet.

WaterBuoy Now Available

As seen on Dragons den (click here to see it) WaterBuoy is an amazing floatation device.

This device can be attached to keys, gps units, cameras, PDA's, Mobile phones, radio receives, fishing tackle, portable radios. Really anything thats under 1kg in weight.

If you drop an item WaterBuoy is attached to WaterBuoy will self inflate an internal balloon bringing your dropped item to the surface, it will then flash a beacon light showing you where your missing item is which can be seen up to 250 metres away.

Tested - AquaPac

On Monday night I got the opportunity to test an AquaPac camera bag at our local swimming pool which has a depth of 3.5m at the deep end. I can say that its a great value product.

We used the version with a hard lens (shown here) for around an hour, down to the bottom of the pool and not a drop of water entered the case, neither did any condensation build up.

Only downside to the case is that you have to be careful about the edge of the lens section or it will appear in your picture (as shown in the video below).

Overall I think a great product for the money.
