A lot of events incorporate early bird pricing to encourage people to register early and it usually works. In some cases an Event Planner may extend an early bird period after registration has started, but after a recent experience I think that this strategy should be avoided.

Here's why.

This past fall, I was considering attending a conference, but kept putting off looking into the details, checking into flights and hotels and making a decision. I knew that the early bird pricing ended December 10th, so I set a reminder for myself to make a decision by that date.

The morning of the deadline, just as I was about to finally look into the details and decide whether to register or not, I received an email stating that the early bird deadline had been extended until January 15th.

I immediately re-scheduled my reminder to register and was happy that I could hold onto my money for another month and wait to see a better opportunity arose.

I understand the organizers of this event were trying to encourage more people to register, however, I now realize the problems an Early-Bird extension can cause.

Consider these problems:

1. Delayed registrations and revenue from fence sitters - If you allow a reasonable amount of time for people to take advantage of your early bird pricing anyone who is serious about attending will register. If people are undecided or putting off the decision as I was, extending the period just gives more time to delay.

2. Lost registrants to competing events or other commitments - The longer someone waits to register for your event the more likely they will make other commitments and be unable to attend your event. Get people registered early so they will schedule other things around your event rather than at the same time.

3. Gives the impression that your event is struggling - When I found out that the early bird period for this recent event was extended, I concluded that they must be getting less registrations than expected and needed to offer another incentive. This thinking made me sceptical about registering since there might be less networking opportunities, cancelled workshops and other changes as a result of less revenue.

4. Frustrate people that registered before the early-bird deadline - If people registered and paid their money early only to find out that the procrastinators will get the same deal they did, you could get some complaints or leave a bad impression in their minds.

5. Set a precedent that waiting until the last minute pays off - People will remember what happened with registration for a previous event and if you are known for extending early bird deadlines, it will become harder for you to get people to take immediate action when you send out your marketing materials.

Welcome home! These two small words carry potent possibilities for creating a connection that evokes loyalty and teamwork. Yet, one seldom thinks of "welcome home" in the context of work. In fact, it is only through recent incidents that I have become acutely aware of the power this gesture holds.

Scene ONE: a world away in the remote regions of the western Himalayas.

Our team had been warned of the dangers in crossing the white water rivers fed by glacier melt. The crossing would be on foot and had to be done as early as possible in the day-before the sun would begin to melt the ice pack and the rivers rise within minutes. Our team of locals had gotten us up before dawn-sending us briskly on our way after a hot breakfast. They stayed behind to pack up gear, tent, and load the mules. We made it across the frigid water by forming a human chain. Our team was too late. They had to spend the night on a rock pile, in below freezing temperatures, and cross at 5:30 am the next day.

My husband and I were up early that morning with the head guide. Suddenly, we heard a shout and in the distance saw the figures of our team coming down the slope. We cheered, waved, hollered and wrapped them in an embrace with the words, "Welcome Home." We stood around beaming at each other. For the rest of the trek, this team seemed even more helpful, solicitous and full of extra effort for those of us who welcomed them home.

I frankly had not made the connection until another incident happened.

Scene TWO: a combination assisted living and memory care facility in Southern California.

Mom, age 93, had fallen and broken her hip. Now, two months’ from the time an ambulance sped her away to the closest hospital, I wheeled her back through the front door. Her mind and body had taken a terrible assault coupled with embolisms and a decreasing ability to emotionally or mentally cope. She would not be going back to her upstairs studio but rather into the rooms behind the locked door.

As soon as we entered, the receptionist jumped up to give Mom a big hug and said "welcome home." Other care managers came up and knelt down and hugged her. When we walked down the hall toward the locked doors, residents who had known Mom were sitting in the activities room. They shouted to her and applauded. As I pushed her down the hall to her new room, more care managers came up to us Lastly, at the door of her new room were balloons and a big sign, "Welcome Home, Mary." I cried.

Any lingering doubt about the wisdom of this move vanished. Despite the fact Mom can’t remember them and alternates in moods that range from pleasant to belligerent, this team of caregivers continues to serve with compassion and care. They come from different parts of the facility to tell me they are so glad our whole family has come home.

Funny. The first day I left her, the security guard at my building hollered out "welcome home." I swear I had never heard that.

(1) How do you make employees feel as if they are welcomed home? One surgeon was overheard telling a custodian, "Hey, Frank. Glad to see you this morning. I never worry about the cleanliness of this hospital when I see you here." Don’t you think the employee felt as if he was, "welcomed home"? I do.

(2) Do you notice when employees are absent-whether for illness, travel, or even vacation? And when they come back, do you welcome them home? Sounds trite, but I am beginning to think it is the small things that help us feel valued.

(3) As the economy turns around, you might very well want to bring back employees who have been laid off. How will you welcome them home?

(4) What about your customers or clients? How do you welcome them home? One bank teller not only didn’t welcome a long-time customer "home" but insisted that he could not validate a parking ticket unless the customer made a transaction. The customer was so angry, he made a transaction: closed an account that had several thousand dollars in it.

(1) There are some people who bring joy by entering a room and others by leaving. Which one are you? If we had not cared for the staff at Mom’s residence and if she had not been kind, trust me-they would not have welcomed her home.

(2) Watch out for negativity, mean-spirited comments, and "all-about-me" behavior. Behavior like this, even if one is a solid performer by way of numbers, will not generate a "welcome home" feeling. In one law firm, the top rainmaker was fired because the managing partners determined that his behavior so undermined the office that they were better off without him.

(3) Always leave well. Should you leave for another company, another career or even retirement-make sure you leave speaking only well of your employer. Who knows-you might want to return someday.

Remember: home is not given but made. What will you do to make your work a place in which people feel welcomed home?

Online Business Secret: The REAL Death Of Email Marketing

For online marketers who have been around for a while, it's no secret that email marketing "is not what it use to be!"

For many online marketers, conversions rates are a mere fraction of what they use to be. At the same time, there are a few marketers that I've chatted with who have experienced no significant drop in conversions. These are all marketers who have built incredible subscriber loyalty over the years.

For many online marketers, the biggest problem is email deliverability. Their email is simply not getting through. Email is being filtered so heavily today that often less than 20% of a large ezine mailing gets delivered.

There are things you can do to improve your email deliverability, such as run it through a spam checker prior to sending it out. If your email scores higher than a 2, I personally would revise it to lower the score.

I've talked to friends over a year ago, who often confided in me that they sometimes sent out emails and got absolutely NO response. They wondered if anyone even received the emails or read them.

Many savvy marketers also realized that a business totally dependent upon email was not a very solid business. They realized that what they really needed was a database that contained not only names and email addresses, but physical mailing addresses. This is one of the reasons that you started seeing some online marketers offering loss leaders on CD or DVD. It gave them the perfect tool (excuse) to build out their databases. Some of my in-the-know friends have also shared with me that many ISP's now monitor things such as email delivery rates, bounce rates, and open rates. They use readily available data, and if a given ISP or third party list host had a dismal record, they may block ALL email from that source.

That's pretty scary. I was also told that a few well-known list management providers were having emails coming off their servers BLOCKED, or "black holed."

If ISPs are tapping into database that reveal which mail servers send out a lot of mail that has very low open rates, for example, and blocking email from those servers, that does very well spell the slow death of some email marketers... unless they move their list to other platforms.

Ok, so I just painted a pretty dismal picture for some marketers.

When I was in the military, my bosses always told me that they wanted the truth from me. They insisted that I not "sugar-coat" the facts. However, they also told me not to bring them problems, without also bringing them viable solutions.

Solutions to the email deliverability issue are out there. For example, paid "sender verification" is one that is often suggested.

One that I've looked at many times over the years is some type of direct-to-desktop solution. That's one where your subscribers install tools that allow your communications to tap into technologies not even dependent upon email.

The objection always brought up when discussing direct-to-desktop applications, is that there's only so much desktop real-estate, so a person can only subscribe to so many of these independent channels.

Another solution that I like very much is building your list on a hosted platform, so that communications take place within the system.

A good example of this can be seen on the social networking site Sokule, pronounced "so cool." The Sokule community is built on a platform that looks and feels a lot like Twitter, except that it's built for marketers, so you are encouraged to market on the platform. In fact, there are several built-in features that allow members to monetize their community membership.

While members of many social networking communities tend to de-emphasize getting lots of followers, Sokule is different. Sokule seems to encourage you to get as many followers (called "trackers") as you can in two ways:

1) They have a quasi-currency, called "sokens" that you can offer to other members to reward them for following you. You earn these sokens, and then you offer them to community members as a reward for following you. In a way, you can buy followers.

2) They allow upgraded members to direct message ALL of their followers a maximum of once every three day. That means that in a very real way, when you build a following on Sokule, you ARE building a list.

When you set up your Sokule account, you enter three of your areas of interest. This allows others to search the database for members with like interest, whom they can then track (follow). In theory, this means that when you send out a direct message, your message should be going to people interested in the same topic.

Just as with an email list, you need to respect your trackers on Sokule, and provide genuine value to the relationship.

marketer's best friend!

But is it really?

Google can make you or break you and according to their own
data, 7 out of 10 are broken. This isn't because Google
doesn't work - it does. You'd better believe it, but like
anything else, you have to know how the game is played
FIRST, not last. There are 5 things Google really doesn't
want you to know. By reading on you'll be among the elite
30% who play Google all the way to the bank.

First let me share some background which may be the biggest
myth of all... consider it a bonus.

Ads are NOT ranked in accordance with the amount bid. Its
kind of like the airline industry. You paid a certain
price for your seat. The person next to paid less, yet
their seat is the same as yours.

Google ranks using two major criteria...

1) Language in the ad and landing page which determines
relevancy (quality) 2) How many times the ad is clicked and
impressions shown

So for example, if your ad is shown from a search (quality)
1000 times and is clicked through only 5 times (CTR) which
is .5% then you're in trouble. However, if your ad is
clicked on 10-20 times which is 1-2%, then you're in
business. Google will then start raising your position and
lowering your cost. Sound crazy? Read on...

Here are the 5 things Google doesn't want you to know:

1. All accounts are defaulted to the content network.

Google ships ads out to other search engines and content
networks. Content network is the default setting for
Google Adwords. Being in the Content network of Google is
like the kissmof death for any marketer and their wallet.
Ads shown here get killed in the click through rate (CTR)
because the user isn't looking to click ads, they are
interested in the website's content- not your ad. Besides
this,on the rare occasion they do click your ad,
conversions are miniscule. This is also where fraud
occurs. Adsense based sites get their ads from the Content
network. Ever heard of click robots?

2. Keywords are too general.

Let's say someone is in the mortgage industry... they
shouldn't use the general word 'mortgage' if they are
selling reverse mortgages or second mortgages. Some people
figure the word 'mortgage' will cover their bases, but it
only drains their bank account.

3. Use quotes and brackets around your keywords.

If a marketer is using the keywords making money on the
internet and doesn't use quotes or brackets, then ANY
search that has ANY of those 5 words in it will trigger an
impression and drive your CTR down dramatically.

If a searcher uses the words 'making chocolate brownies'
your ad pops up. The quotes and brackets specify the
keyword phrase you want to focus on. With quotes, your
search phrase stays intact but may have other words before
or after it. With brackets, the seracher only used those 5
words in the exact order YOU put them in.

4. Put the keyword in the title or body of your ad.

About 80% of marketers don't use the keyword in their ads
at all. I put in the words 'training my dog' and only one
ad was an exact match. It's true that people search based
on what they want to achieve. Training my dog was my goal.
Another example would be 'buy tires'. If 'buy tires' were
in the title or body of the ad this would add to the
quality score.

5. There's a way to cut a deal with other search engines
and bypass the content network.

There are 3 places Google shows ads: a. Home page b.
Content network c. Other search engines

It's not uncommon to have 40% of your ads shipped out to
other search engines. Once you track this activity you can
cut a deal with them and pay half the price per click.

People who have a bad CTR and poor quality score end up
paying more per click for minimal results. Google makes a
fortune on desperate advertisers who are often novices in
the business opportunity industry.

The average click through price for an inexperienced
marketer in this arena is $2.00-$4.00/click. Experienced
marketers only pay $.75-$1.00/click.

Google will alternate quality ads and poor ads on the home
page in order to satisfy both revenue and users search
queries. However, the poor expensive ads are usually
getting low conversion therefore draining your account.

earlier this year?

theme that subtracts from the experience is bad.

4) Search Engine Optimization

A lot can be said about search engine optimization, but at
the end of the day if you have content worth reading
eventually you'll get the rankings you deserve. However,
that doesn't mean that you don't need SEO; it merely means
that as far as optimization is concerned all you really
need to do is to make sure:

(a) Your title tags are formatted properly, with the name
of the post first followed by the name of the blog - some
themes can do this automatically without modification to
the code or use of a plugin

(b) All your blog content titles use the H1 tag, with the
main keywords used instead of non-descriptive text for
better SEO relevance

(b) Your theme has clean source codes, and if possible all
formatting is linked to an external CSS file which you can
edit independently

5) Plug-And-Play Ease of Use

Can the theme be installed easily on an existing blog
without having to move things around? Can the same theme be
used and customized easily on your other blogs? These are
some additional things you may want to consider when
theme-shopping, especially if every minute of downtime on
your blog may mean lost revenue.

While it's hard to make comparisons due to the sheer amount
of free and paid themes out there, it's still a good idea
to have a test blog site. Test any theme you plan on using,
and make sure your test blog is also fitted with all the
plugins and miscellaneous widgets used on your real blog.

Adsense has long been one of the best ways to monetize your
website but it's amazing how many people are leaving so
much potential earnings on the table simply by not thinking

Use the full allowance of ads available to you on each page

Google allows you to place 3 different regular ad units and
1 link ad unit on each and every page of your website and
it is important to use this allowance to maximize your
chances of clicks. Place them in area's of the page that

has an article, place them to float within the text of the
article. Either at the top of after a couple of paragraphs.
Another great place to place ads is at the bottom of an
article as your visitors are looking for a place to go once
they've finished reading the article. Why not then present
them with some options in the form of some adsense ads. The
key is to blend them into the page so they don't detract
from the content. Another thing to add here is don't use
the horizontal banner ad format. Your site visitors are
blind to them and simply won't click on them. This removes
one of the 4 allowed ads on your page.

Optimize each page for adsense

Research competitive keywords using a keyword research tool
such as Overture's keyword suggestion tool at

or grab a list of the most popular keywords from various
sources and use them in your web site pages where relevant.

your site

Google has provided web site publishers with some great
tools to help you analyze and tweak your adsense ads. Give
each unit a unique name and then analyze the results and

differently into the text and keep detailed notes on the

your existing text links. Don't try and make the ads stand
out on the page by using bright colors as all this achieves
is making a big warning sign that these are ads and the
majority of people will then not click on the links. By
making the links the same color as your links, it looks
like they are an extension of your page. If you use the tip
above and optimize each page for specific keywords then the
ads served on the page will be related to the information
on the page and you'll see your CTR shoot up.

And finally, a tip that I advise for all aspects of website
marketing, not just for adsense purposes is, learn from the
masters. There are plenty of people making thousands of
dollars in adsence earnings every month and have gone
through all the trial and error iterations that need to be
done to find the most successful way to maximize your
