The girl didn't know why her legs were aching but her mother did. Her mother knew that she was growing up and movement was taking place in her joints and muscles, producing pain. The mother gently rocked her daughter in her arms and said, "It will be okay, honey. Every little boy and girl has pain like this. It's better to have pain and grow than not have pain and not grow."

There are many ways to measure growth in the life of the church. We can monitor worship attendance or look at stewardship records. We can evaluate how many are participating in leadership roles or various activities of the church. We can look at what new or expanded ministries are thriving, or at how much use is made of the space we have.

In a recent sermon, I quoted 19th century philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer who compared the human race to porcupines huddled together on a bitter cold winter night: The colder it gets outside, the more we huddle together for warmth; but the closer we get to one another, the more we hurt one another with our sharp quills.

As we grow in a variety of ways, our sharp quills will poke others. The sign of our maturity will be how we handle the sharp pokes that we receive from one another in the growth. Will we practice Christian maturity by acknowledging and discussing the hurts we feel, or will we talk behind one another's backs, gossip, and speak unkind words that hurt the church and its ministry to the community?

My prayer is that we will handle the pain of growing with compassion.

CHCCSecretarynoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6437107531912122364.post-42491972882786374012009-12-27T16:45:00.000-08:002009-06-26T14:01:20.149-07:00Angel Food MinistriesOffice hours July
Tuesday, July 7; 2-4pm
Thursday, July 9; 2-4pm
Saturday, July 11; 11:30am-1pm
EBT customers please come on Saturday.

Final day to order:
Sunday, July 12; 11:15 a.m.

Distribution Day:
Saturday, July 18, 11:30am-12:30pm

August
Tuesday, August 11; 2-4pm
Thursday, August 13; 2-4pm
Saturday, August 15; 11:30am-1pm
EBT customers please come on Saturday.

Final day to order:
Sunday, August 16, 11:15 a.m.

Distribution Day:
Saturday, August 22, 11:30 am-12:30pm

CHCCSecretarynoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6437107531912122364.post-67050020677430590282009-06-30T14:47:00.000-07:002009-06-26T14:20:16.784-07:00“Green” Summer Fun Nights—July 1, 8, 15, 22If you are interested in volunteering to help this year, please contact Luci Collins. It was on July 17, 2006 that I began my work at Capitol Hill with you. John Park and I will be moving to Branson, Missouri to begin a new call to ministry at First Christian Church.

Thank you for this time that we have had to journey together on this Christian walk. I have learned many things while here, and I have enjoyed getting to know you and being able to join in with you in many meetings, and around many tables of great food! I also appreciated the opportunity to share with you in worship as “Hannah.”

My prayer is that God will bless Capitol Hill Christian Church bountifully as you reach out into the community and continue to share God’s love with all who will come!
Shalom,
Ruth

*We rejoice with Ruth and John Park that they will soon begin a new ministry in a new setting, although they will be missed at Capitol Hill. What a blessing Ruth has been to us! In the coming weeks, there will be opportunities to express our appreciation. We thank God for Ruth and the ministry she has done (and continues to do until July 17) among us.

CHCCSecretarynoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6437107531912122364.post-7588516230057891532009-06-27T15:00:00.000-07:002009-06-27T15:01:21.439-07:00IRMS MembershipCapitol Hill Christian Church has a membership with Iowa Religious Media Services, 3116 104th St., Urbandale.
