Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit, non-denominational organization dedicated to providing grocery relief and financial support to communities throughout the United States. Every month, a new menu is available and contains both fresh and frozen food items. The average retail value is approximately $60.00. You may purchase as many of these packages as you like for $30.00 per unit! Specialty boxes are also available after the purchase of at least one $30.00 unit. These boxes generally contain specialty items such as steaks, chicken or pork.

Candice's Comments

A little girl cried to her mother that she was having leg pains. The girl didn't know why her legs were aching but her mother did. Her mother knew that she was growing up and movement was taking place in her joints and muscles, producing pain. The mother gently rocked her daughter in her arms and said, "It will be okay, honey. Every little boy and girl has pain like this. It's better to have pain and grow than not have pain and not grow."

There are many ways to measure growth in the life of the church. We can monitor worship attendance or look at stewardship records. We can evaluate how many are participating in leadership roles or various activities of the church. We can look at what new or expanded ministries are thriving, or at how much use is made of the space we have.

In a recent sermon, I quoted 19th century philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer who compared the human race to porcupines huddled together on a bitter cold winter night: The colder it gets outside, the more we huddle together for warmth; but the closer we get to one another, the more we hurt one another with our sharp quills.

As we grow in a variety of ways, our sharp quills will poke others. The sign of our maturity will be how we handle the sharp pokes that we receive from one another in the growth. Will we practice Christian maturity by acknowledging and discussing the hurts we feel, or will we talk behind one another's backs, gossip, and speak unkind words that hurt the church and its ministry to the community?

My prayer is that we will handle the pain of growing with compassion.

Summer Fun Nights Supplies Request

This year’s July Summer Fun Nights will focus on our environment and how we can take care of it. To be good stewards of our environment, our Summer Fun Night crafts will use your used and recycled items.
If you have any of the following items and would like for us to reuse them, please drop them in the Summer Fun Night Craft Donations box located in the narthex at church.
Please make sure all items are clean and usuable – and most importantly USED! Please don’t purchase anything!

-Toilet paper tubes
-Paper towel tubes
-Plastic plates (Solo type – not paper or styrofoam)
-Plastic silverware (colorful is best)
-Odd or mismatched china cups, saucers or plates, colorful
-Paper milk cartons – Clean and Dry please (1/2 gal. size)
-1 quart plastic pop bottles
-1 liter plastic pop bottles
-Heavy string – not rope
-Odd or mismatched metal spoons and forks
-Used pencils – at least 4 inches long
If you have any ¾” or 1” PVC pipe lying around, we could use it, too! (Cut in 4 foot sections!)

Disciples will close the 2009 General Assembly in the company of the other two streams of the Stone-Campbell movement: the Churches of Christ and the Christian Churches—as well as guests from across the Central Indiana area.

Join in an experience of communion that honors this shared heritage as we celebrate together the 200th Anniversary of Thomas Campbell's signing of the Declaration and Address.

Dear CHCC Friends,
It is with mixed emotions that I let you know that my last day at Capitol Hill will be Friday, July 17. It was on July 17, 2006 that I began my work at Capitol Hill with you. John Park and I will be moving to Branson, Missouri to begin a new call to ministry at First Christian Church.

Thank you for this time that we have had to journey together on this Christian walk. I have learned many things while here, and I have enjoyed getting to know you and being able to join in with you in many meetings, and around many tables of great food! I also appreciated the opportunity to share with you in worship as “Hannah.”

My prayer is that God will bless Capitol Hill Christian Church bountifully as you reach out into the community and continue to share God’s love with all who will come!

· pick up hymnals each Sunday after 10am worship.

For over 30 years, Larry Woolson has faithfully hauled off the trash from Capitol Hill. Now he is retiring, and we celebrate his commitment to providing this service for the church over this long period of time. Thank you Larry for your faithfulness. Well done, good and faithful servant.

Emma VanderZyl, daughter of Craig and Jeanette VanderZyl, and granddaughter of Norma Smith, has been named a Roadman Scholar at Morningside College, Sioux City. Congratulations Emma!

Congratulations to Natasha Huxford, granddaughter of Sharon Batye, who graduated from East High School in May! Natasha was present May 17 to be recognized with other graduates that day! Natasha left in June for Dennison, Iowa where she is involved in Job Corp.

Congratulations to Clark Betts, who will be inducted into the East High School Hall of Fame on September 18, 2009! In High School Clark competed in Cross Country, Track and Swimming. He won several state and team athletic awards in the years 1957-1962. We are proud of you Clark!

Each week the hymn books and other items in the pew racks are moved after 10:00 a.m. worship in preparation for the Pentecostal Church of God's worship at 1:00 p.m. Skip Larson has made a wooden cart on wheels to use as storage space for the hymnals. Thanks Skip for seeing a need and responding with your creative talents.

The work of the Treasurer has been divided between Teresa Parmenter (Payroll and Taxes) and Sharon Batye. We appreciate the gifts of both to this important task.

Emily Kerns is moving to Arizona July 1. We will miss her but send her with our love and prayers. She will be living with her brother Jacob, and his family.

10 a.m. - Camp Sunday! - Come share camp songs and activities as we worship in Fellowship Hall. Dress casual.

4 p.m. - Joint Meal and Fellowship with Pentecostal Church of God! Bring lawn chairs, hamburgers or hot dogs to grill, and a covered dish to share.

Ordination

Kate West, a Master of Divinity student at Lexington Theological Seminary, Lexington, Kentucky, met with the Regional Commission on Ministry June 11 for her Ordination Interview. She has completed her course work at the seminary and is currently enrolled in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at Saint Joseph Hospitals in Lexington, working in the Cardiac Care Unit and Telemetry.

Following her completion of CPE in mid-August, Kate will be ordained at Capitol Hill Christian Church on Saturday, September 26 at 2:00 p.m.

This is a wonderful occasion in the life of the church. We rejoice with Kate and her parents, Bob and Pat West.

New Office Location

Rev. Don Hiscox, Regional Minister for Congregational and Clergy Care, has recently established an office on the lower level at Capitol Hill Christian Church, following the closing of the Regional Church Center, 3300 University Avenue.
His office is located directly beneath the Nursery. The Board voted May 17 to extend this invitation of hospitality.
