My parents were both born in Brazil, and so were my grand parents on my father’s side. However, my mother’s side is Argentinian and that's why my mum lived twenty years there. My great-grandparents were from Italy, Syria, Germany and Switzerland so as you can see, it is a mixture!

French, Spanish, Portuguese and English are the languages spoken in my community, and I have learned all of them at school and at home.
Spanish is my mother tongue. Since I was a little baby my mother always spoke to me in this language and this is why I'm so familiar with it.
Portuguese is the language spoken in my country and by most of my family. I speak English and French to talk to my friends who live abroad.

I believe that the languages and cultures that best represent me are the Brazilian and the Argentinian culture. I feel free, I'm not shy when I express myself in those languages. When I have to be sweet, I use Portuguese because Brazilian people are very calm and have their own special way to do things. We call it "the jeitinho brasileiro".
When I’m angry, I speak Spanish so every time I start to fight or when I’m mad about something I use it. Maybe it’s because of my family; they all speak loud and complain in Spanish when they are not feeling well! With my mother we switch languages so it’s hard for an outsider to understand us. We can start a conversation in Portuguese, keep on in Spanish and finish it in Portuguese.

I’m not very fond of German and Turkish. It’s not that I hate those languages but because I have the impression that people don’t speak - they make noises, unpleasant harsh noises in fact. It’s very hard for me to imagine people being sweet in those languages.

In my opinion all foreign languages should be fostered. It’s very nice to go abroad and manage to talk with people in their own language! It’s also good when you have to read a book, or a poem in its original version. Books written in French for example, don’t have the same meaning in Portuguese.

The most common languages that Brazilian people study are English and Spanish. In my school, students can choose between learning Spanish or German, while English is obligatory.

As for me, I believe that people in my country have to learn a foreign language, not just for fun or tourism but for having a good job; speaking many languages gives you a better social and cultural status. Nowadays, any “plus” in you curriculum makes a difference, and knowing many languages is a big one.

Sometimes, there can be a little difference in the way people consider some languages in certain regions. Here for instance, learning English would be better considered than learning Russian for example. This is due to the use that people will give to the language: English is more spoken in the whole world than Russian. . Brazilian people, are used to the Anglo-Saxon culture and to English. As it is the language of global communication, English is taught is most good schools and is present in our everyday life through movies, food, television and in the newspapers.

A new language comes with a new culture. A Brazilian person, who learns French, will have to get used to the different way of seeing life and acting that French people have; they are quieter and don’t express their feeling to everyone. I believe that thanks to the education I had, it’s become very easy to get used to new cultures and ways of living.
São Paulo is a very rich city because you can find many cultures in the same place; Japanese, German, Portuguese and Italian people, among others. This can sound a little bit weird, but that’s the result of immigration; restaurants and neighbourhoods from many nationalities.

When you start to learn a new language or culture there are many challenges. First of all, the accent and grammar. Next, and certainly the biggest challenge; the fear of making mistakes when you communicate with a native. In my opinion it is possible to create an identity in a foreign language. Maybe, it can be hard to express yourself but this is not going to change the way you are or the way you act. I am myself when I speak English. Perhaps sometimes I don’t feel very comfortable but my personality doesn’t change, I am who I am in every language or circumstance.

((43 places))

Some questions I've made for someone who went to Mykonos Island :

Sunsets!
Hello! First of all, because I had to write in English, and by having to write I think that I made some progress; I learnt new vocabulary, new expressions.
Sometimes bloging was a little bit boring and exhausting, but when I saw the results I could say that the effort was worth it! I also learnt how to use flickr and bloglines and I like it!!!

In my opinion, the work that has been done with our teacher will be more and more used form now on in the "school world". Perhaps they believed that the government was way to0 conservative and elitist, they wanted to speak and be heard, they wanted to make a real difference in the world, they wanted to do things that really matter and they thought that the best way of doing this was to be different; maybe it would be the only way to strikes the attention to them and to what they really wanted.

They believed that rebellion was a question of attitude that's why they used their bodies to show it; they did that by using different clothes, tattoos and body piercing. Perhaps, the fact of being different was a new way to strike the attention, to show that they wanted, they needed changes, don't you think?

What are the issues today and how do young people today show their rebellion?

Today, young people show their rebellion by drinking a lot, or using drugs; they believe that they are very brave and better than the others by doing this. Some young people rebel against their parents by doing things that they don't consider right such as piercing their bodies or making tattoos.

What makes me happy?

*Thinking that the school will be over in 1 year and 1/2 makes me happy... Going to the Pinacoteca was the best! First of all we had a delicious lunch in the park! It was great! I ate with Gala (minha Xalala), Carole and Oceane! It was very good because I manage to know better the French girls (stereotype!), they are very cool!
I went to this exhibition twice, one with my family and an other one with the school! I loved it! Some sculptures were very weird and did not have a true meaning to me, but his drawing deserve all the recognition in the world, especially for the trees! I don't why, but since I was a little girl I was crazy about trees... When we went with the school to the Sítio do Caroção, we all had to do a drawing. Everyone did the houses, the toys that were around the camp, the swimming pool but I did just a simple tree! I just love trees, they are so, so, unique, especial, free, alive... At home, when grown up, I will have a wall, with pictures of trees!
I better stop talking about trees because you will get bored...!!
My second visit to the Pinacoteca, was, how can I say?! Very complete? Perhaps! Because we saw Henry's Moore film! It was nice but the room was very cold and I got seek! Sometimes the film was a little bit boring and repetitive because Henry Moore was always talking about his passion about mother and sun..! He loves that and I love trees... Even if I don't like, I have to respect it! His art is new, and his proposition to make art interact with nature is very amusing because when you look at it you really believe that it feats, you believe that one thing is a part of the other and that they match very well together!
Finally, I would like to suggest this exhibition to everyone who loves art, everyone who wants to see new things in life, which show life in a singular and unique way! ;)

Hudge kiss!

Sofiiiiiiiiiiiii! Try to illustrate your definition with examples of situations you know.

A rebel is someone who is against rules. An act of rebellion is doing something that is not considered right for the authorities, something that is against the laws. This laws can be the ones that are imposed by the government or the laws that are imposed by the parents... For example; if my mum doesn't allow me to pierce my ear and I do it against her orders I will be committing a low act of rebellion. If someone use drugs, he is also commenting and act of rebellion because drugs are against the law.

b) In which situations do you feel like rebelling?

I feel like rebelling why I do something without telling my parents, when I do something that I know that is not considered right for them. Not telling your parents is the worst way, by doing this you show that your are not responsable, it's the best way to show that you don't deserve their trust, so, tell your parents, don't do wrong things and they will allow you to life is "freedom".

c) Check the thesaurus and make a list of synonyms that are used for heroes and rebels. I believe that's a very hard job that demands a hudge dedication. In order to be good you must practice a lot, like the post's autor says, "you must break yourself into another one " and" you should act natural". Particulary, I don't believe that acting is the best profesion in the world but the conception of what it is, is very well given by the student. We can see that he loves what he pretends to do, what he is doing, he is trying to be better and he is proud of his achivements (" I am proud of myself because of winning the best pronunciation in drama and the champion group in singing."). The student believes that playing different roles is a challenge ("Trying to act different roles is a challenge for me") and it's by saying this that we can figure that he really loves what he is doing, we can imagine him, in the future, as a happy person that works with a big smile in face.

And, for me that's the most important thing, because I believe that people were born to be happy, and I admire people that really are!!

((Henry Moore))

Henry Moore was an English sculptor, he brought about a renewed interest in direct carving and enriched the formal vocabulary of the medium. He did that by examinating figurative motifs and abstract shapes.

He was born on July 30, 1898, in Castleford, Yorkshire. Despite an early desire to become a sculptor, Moore began his career as a teacher in Castleford. After military service in the First World war he studied in the Leeds School of Art. In 1921 he won a Royal Exhibition Scholarship to study sculpture at the Royal Academy of Art in London. There, Moore became interested in the Mexican, Egyptian, and African sculpture. He was appointed Instructor of Sculpture at the Royal Academy in 1924, he realised this job for seven years. Again the Royal Academy traveling scholarship allowed Moore to visit Italy in 1925 where he saw the frescoes of Giotto and Masaccio and the late sculpture of Michelangelo.

He was an important force in the English Surrealist movement, although he was not entirely committed to its doctrines; Moore participated in the International Surrealist Exhibition at the New Burlington Galleries, in 1936.

In the begining of the Second World War, he stopped his production that was very inventive and productive before. But during the war, Moore was commissioned as a war artist, notably producing powerful drawings of Londoners sleeping in the London Underground whilst sheltering from the blitz These drawings helped to boost Moore's international reputation, particularly in America. He died in 1986.

Hero --> Questions 4 the oral!

What is a hero?
For me a hero is someone that fights for a cause, someone who believes that his word can make a difference. A hero is a brave person, a person that has got targets, a person who believes that dreams can come true, someone that really wants something. A hero must be altruistic and passionate.

Where can we find heroes?
Heroes can be found everywhere, anytime. He became one of the most respected spiritual and political leaders of the 1900's. GandhiJI helped free the Indian people from British rule through nonviolent resistance, and is honored by Indians as the father of the Indian Nation.
The Indian people called Gandhiji 'Mahatma', meaning Great Soul. At the age of 13 Gandhi married Kasturba, a girl the same age. Their parents arranged the marriage. The Gandhis had four children. Gandhi studied law in London and returned to India in 1891 to practice. In 1893 he took on a one-year contract to do legal work in South Africa.
At the time the British controlled South Africa. When he attempted to claim his rights as a British subject he was abused, and soon saw that all Indians suffered similar treatment. Gandhi stayed in South Africa for 21 years working to secure rights for Indian people.
He developed a method of action based upon the principles of courage, nonviolence and truth called Satyagraha. He believed that the way people behave is more important than what they achieve. Satyagraha promoted nonviolence and civil disobedience as the most appropriate methods for obtaining political and social goals. In 1915 Gandhi returned to India. Within 15 years he became the leader of the Indian nationalist movement.
Using the principles of Satyagraha he led the campaign for Indian independence from Britain. Gandhi was arrested many times by the British for his activities in South Africa and India. He believed it was honorable to go to jail for a just cause. Altogether he spent seven years in prison for his political activities.
More than once Gandhi used fasting to impress upon others the need to be nonviolent. India was granted independence in 1947, and partitioned into India and Pakistan. Rioting between Hindus and Muslims followed. Gandhi had been an advocate for a united India where Hindus and Muslims lived together in peace.
On January 13, 1948, at the age of 78, he began a fast with the purpose of stopping the bloodshed. After 5 days the opposing leaders pledged to stop the fighting and Gandhi broke his fast. Twelve days later a Hindu fanatic, Nathuram Godse who opposed his program of tolerance for all creeds and religion assassinated him.

Molly Pitcher, a heroine of the American War of Independence!!!!

This is a painting made by Dennis Malone Carter, entitled "Molly Pitcher at the Battle of Monmouth". The main subject of this painting is the Americain War of Independence that took place in 1777. The role of Molly Pitcher in this conflict was been with her husband regiment and helping by repeatedly carrying water to cool both the cannons and to save the exhausted and wounded soldiers. Everytime they needed water they started calling "Pitcher" that's why Molly received the name of Molly Pitcher!

This painting can be divided in three parts. In the foreground we can see Hays, Molly's husband that has collapsed from the scorching heat of that day. In the middle ground there is a strong man that is a probably a gunner because he is shouting the cannon. Standing behind him we have Molly Pitcher, that is wearing a red dress and holding a torch. Finally, in the background we can see the regiment, either walking or riding horses.

George and the dragon!!

This document is an oil in canvas made by Sir. Edward Burne Jones, a painter and designer, who was a leading figure in the second phase of Pre-Raphaelitism and studied theology at the Oxford university, he used to paint scenes inspired by medieval legend and classical mythology (especially since 1866), all of which showed a greater concern for surface patterning and colour than narrative, like the one that I'm going to describe called "George and the Dragon".

First of all, you should be asking yourselves who is this George that is supposed to be killing a dragon, aren't you? Infact, this George is the patron saint of England and he is the focus of the painting because he is bigger than the dragon and much bigger than the princess who appears like a small and fragile creature in her wedding dress way back in the background.

The painting is divided in 3 distinct parts. In the foreground we see George who's finishing off a dragon to save the princess life. George is wearing a shining armour, his cape is red and so is his belt. He is holding a sword called Ascalon in his left hand and a shield in his right hand.
In the middle ground we notice the princess who seems to be a shining star in the middle of the black field. She is wearing a white wedding dress that shows her purity but also shows that she is going to get married with someone and this someone is probably George our favorite knight!
Finally, in the background we have the mountains and the forest that are painted in very sad colors such as a very dark blue that probably represent a desertic and sad landscape.

As a conclusion I think that we could ask ourselves which is the meaning of the dragon in this painting, is he considered, like in China a symbol of luck?

I don't think so, here he is considered like an element that disturbs peace and it can't certainly not be considered like a luck symbol but represents the forces of evil!!

HERO --> New unit!!

Last week we started a new unit. In this unit about HEROES and what they mean to each one of us. We have chosen the qualities that are essential for them. For me, a hero must have determination because it's the only way to reach your targets without losing yourself in the middle of the road. A hero also needs focus because it's impossible to reach an objective without knowing what it is and directing the energy only to it. Finally, a hero needs perseverance because only this quality that means that you have to ALWAYS try without give up!

My hero is my step father, a man whom I could call father, a man that never gives up, a man who is a good person who had targets in life and who has reached most, I man who takes care of me and a man that I love a lot!

Some, any, somebody, anything...

Some and its compounds are used in affirmative sentences! In my post, I would like to give you some examples of stereotypes made by the society or by I a certain group of people.

The first stereotype was about MEN: We saw that they can't be trusted and that they have no feelings, but is it right? I really don't think so because even if men are supposed to be strong, sometimes, they can cry or fall in love and it doesn't mean that they are going to be less of a man because of this. Sometimes the image shown by the society is not the right one, don't you agree?

In the second stereotype we saw that WOMEN can drive so badly, cook so well and talk so much, is it true? I disagree completely! First of all; there are many women who drive very well and don't cause accidents in traffic, maybe not everyone but certainly most of them. For the second stereotype; I love cooking but I have many friends such as Nathalie who hates cooking. Finally, the third stereotype might be true because most girls love chating about silly things, we spend our time doing this, why is it a bad thing!?

The third stereotype is about BOYS. It says that they are selfish and good at maths. I don't think that just boys can be selfish, everyone one, depending on the personality can be like this. It's just a question of character. Many boys are good at maths but many aren't.

Those are my stereotypes! That's it! See you soon!

My third week at school!

On Monday we came to the computer room and we learned how to use Bloglines and Blogger.

During our second class, we made groups of 4 to try to give a definition for a cartoon by Gray Joliffe which introduces us to how the Americans view the British. We concluded that the cartoon leads us to think that the Americans view the British as what seems to be a conservative and traditional society which has not evolved in time.

I don't think that this stereotype is true because just as the Americans the British have got a lot of technologies that are present in their lives. England is a very rich and developed country who has certainly evolved in time. First if we go back in time we notice that the English Industrial Revolution began before the American one and we know that until today the English currency is stronger than the Americain. We can not judge the English system just by their government because there are many democracies that are far worse than their monarchy... Perhaps the origin of this stereotype came from the conservative side that the English have, but I'm certainly not going to make my opinion based on the English just by a stereotype made by the Americains.

First week at school!

My first week at school was great! I saw all my friends and that was perfect because I missed them. My class is very nice and so are the teachers.

It’s only the beginning but 1ES seems to be much harder than 2nde. The main reasons are the French BAC and the homework but I think that if we study a little beat every day we will be able to make it and have good grades.

English class is not as different as I thought, we started by defining what a stereotype was and we concluded that it was a concept, idea followed by the society. French stereotype is been smelly and impolite; an other example of stereotype is that the Italians are ardent lovers! =)

I think that I made the right choice by going to ES because I like ECO a lot and I will definitely work with something relate to it! The biggest problem at school in the moment is French because it is much more difficult and I fell a little bit uncomfortable when I must go to the blackboard but will probably get over it because I am working very hard to achieve all my goals!

Elvis!!

Hey!
