For those of you wondering - "Why is everything on this site all wonky?" The answer is that I've been going to school for web design (ironically) and simply haven't had time to fix everything. And now having learned proper web design, looking at this site makes me want to sigh heavily. The photo gallery and message board were zipped up due to attack by internet bots and nerds who seeded it full of porn and drug ads.

I'm in the process of redesigning the site and moving it to a WordPress based system - BUT that will take a while.

I've been playing around with the idea of rebuilding Fried Green Obsession in WordPress lately. Along with this rebuild will come a re-branding (and possibly the revival of some kind of forum... though I'm still scarred by the first one's spam attacks). I've been template shopping but I think I'm going to attempt to build my own WordPress Theme (my web design graduation is looming and I should spiff this place up to display my new abilities).

Tonight while working on the new branding I entertained myself by making this gem ... I call it "MY Sacred Heart."

BTW if you're visiting this site, yes, I know that everything is all broken. Porn spammer bots and viagra salespeople totally took over the message board so I just took it offline. Then mischievous miscreants (I suspect) did something to my gallery making it go off. I do intend to fix it all in some sort of upgrade to a CMS (content management system) but meanwhile I put it off while I (ironically) attend web design school.

Fried Kuler Tomatoes

Over on Adobe's "Kuler" site artists (and whomever) can create color schemes which can then be downloaded into your Adobe applications (Illustrator, specifically) for use in your art projects. For the hell of it I created two themes with an FGT spin. The first is "Idgie and Ruth" and the second is "Fried Green Tomatoes." Enjoy! Better yet, login and make your own fan color schemes.

An FGT Quiz

After spending some time playing the Never-Ending movie quiz on Flixter I sat dreamily wishing that there were more questions about FRIED GREEN TOMATOES. Since I couldn't find a quiz directly - I decided to create my own. SO - Flixter is now the proud possessor of a new FGT quiz authored by myself. Every time I get something new and customizable - the first thing I do is try to teach myself how to change features by creating a custom FGT theme. (On the site there's a link to a theme for Canon PowerShot cameras, for example.)

This week I got a new mobile phone - a Sony Ericsson Walkman phone. And guess what I can do with it? That's right, I can create custom themes! I can even go as far as programming the light that emanates to whatever color I desire.

So of course - I created the Fried Green Tomatoes mobile phone theme! Check it out:

If you're a member of that social beast, Facebook, you might be happy to find a little application called "Flair." Flair replicates shiny pins (buttons) that you can place on your page or send to a friend's to display your various interests. Today I discovered Flair and it's supply of FGT related pins for sharing and have thus marked my profile with this greatness.

Psychopaths and Narcissists

I've recently discovered a website going by the name of "Fried Green Tomatoes and Steel Magnolias: Online Resource for Victims of Psycopaths and Narcissists." Wait... what? At first I thought it was some diatribe written BY a psychopath or a narcissist... a bitter ex-girlfriend... someone a little "off." But no (??) the site claims to be written by a group of women (mostly women) in the psychiatric field which is why they chose to name themselves after two chick flicks. They've gone as far as to purchase the domain "FriedGreenTomatoes.org".

Personally I think it borders on disgusting. My reaction may be strong but I think using the name of someone else's property purely for site views is deceitful. You can argue that there were "psycopaths and narcissists" in Fried Green Tomatoes (Frank Bennett? The KKK?) but the site doesn't even claim to be about those issues and just links to a bunch of articles about a variety of "psychopaths in the news."

Sure - use Fried Green Tomatoes and Steel Magnolias as your concept inspiration for site design and solidarity among women but DON'T buy FriedGreenTomatoes.org! (Keep in mind that not only am I a fan of the movie and the creator of this site but I'm also a trained information designer for interactive media so I speak from multiple viewpoints on this.)

Anyway... point is.... don't go to FriedGreenTomatoes.org thinking you're going to find anything about the movie. (And I realize that by talking about the site I'm giving it a higher rank in search engines... but still!)

Every few months I do an eBay search looking for some Fried Green Tomatoes merchandise that maybe I haven't seen before or something that is brand new! (One can only hope.) I can only afford to do this search every few months because inevitably I want something that I find. :)

Today's search turned up a couple of treasures that are blog-worthy. The first is a painting of the Whistle Stop Cafe, by Lynn Lumley, covered in snow. Not your every day WSC sighting!

Limited edition prints are being sold on eBay here: Whistle Stop Cafe. More of Lumley's work can be seen on her gallery website as well.

Next on the list is DesignedThreads - a seller with pop culture t-shirts. On eBay they are now selling a shirt with Evelyn's famous insurance quote across the chest. It's cool - I love Evelyn. But I think I'll wait for one that says something more along the lines of "And he eats eggs that shoot right out of a chicken's ass!"

Artist Jenni Prange (JenniPrange.com) completed a painting of the Juliette mill (the empty structure seen in the Whistle Stop backgrounds in FRIED GREEN TOMATOES) for a contest relating to the upcoming "Millies" movie project (now in pre-production in Massachusetts). The "Juliette Mill" piece (and two others by the artist) were on display in Gallery 181 (Lawrence, MA) until just recently and the piece is now available FOR SALE on Etsy.com.

After the Whistle Stop Cafe renovated its website it appears that Juliette has also gone through a little revival. Things are spiffed up at JulietteGA.com. There's also a new domain leading to an online commerce area: http://www.friedgreenproducts.com/ Now you can buy your silly t-shirts online!

In addition, Neill (maker of FRIED GREEN TOMORROWS) is on eBay selling ACTUAL pieces of the building itself. (I've been promised a plank myself - I'll proudly frame that on my wall.) Go here to bid on the planks up for auction now: eBay plank auction! And keep an eye on the seller Neilliene because he'll be putting up more FGT stuff in the future.

Currently I'm taking an interface design class in which we were asked to find some websites that needed revamping and then focus on one and redesign it. Since Juliette's "Whistle Stop Cafe" site was in desperate need of a little TLC I chose to give it a makeover. Well - on the very day that I finished my final revisions for the class I went to the WSC site to find that ... THEY'D MADE IT OVER THEMSELVES!

Gah! Well - good job WSC for recognizing that you needed an update and some professional treatment. There are some great new photos in their photo section too.

Whistle Stop Chains

Apparently the Irondale Cafe owners (which brand themselves and their products with the title "The Original Whistle Stop Cafe") is cooking up a concept to create a chain of Whistle Stop Cafes with Southern food and a railroad theme. Hi, I'm Erin! I'm the proprietress of "Fried Green Obsession" - the first FRIED GREEN TOMATOES fansite on the net! Fried Green Obsession has been in existence since 1997 and I continue to update it as often as time allows. Currently I update the site about news (site related and otherwise) by posting an announcement in the bulletin board but I thought a blog-based update system might be easier to read and manage. So this is the first post and I'm hoping to integrate it within the site seamlessly.
