The Showdown of the Century

It's here, Celtics-Lakers or Lakers-Celtics, depending on the coast. We here at Sportstoilet are all LA guys so we try not to be bias unlike the evil four letter network that single handedly killed hockey just because NBC won the bidding war to air the games. Disney and ABC should be ashamed, Mickey is fraud and goofy is a heroin addict. ESPN should stop stroking New England based teams and start recognizing the West Coast uprising. The leader of the LA-based resurgence is Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers. David Stern is creaming himself over the fact that he has two of the top 5 markets in the finals and the absolute dream match-up, historically, Laker-Celtics. It all started at the trade deadline of the 2007 season. Kobe, obviously fed up with the team's current standing, voiced his opinion on killing the youth movement and the team's need to make big moves and bring in veteran talent. This failed to happen. The Lakers had a chance at Jason Kidd, Kevin Garnett and current Laker, Pau Gasol. Mitch Kupchak, Laker GM, failed to pull the trigger on a deal mainly because all deals included the departure of the young center and oft-proclaimed, future of the Lakers, Andrew Bynum. The Lakers had a miserable season according to the standards set by fans and ownership expectations of the greatest basketball, and maybe sport's franchise of all time.
The off-season was quite eventful, it seemed like whole team was at odds with the backbone, the living legend, the star of stars of the Los Angeles Lakers, Kobe Bryant. Kobe hated them back, or so it seemed. Local radio stations such as AM 570, expressed mixed opinions on Kobe's public tirades about the lack of effort by Laker management. He wasn't particularly happy about the fact that Mitch failed to deal Bynum for the obviously over-the-hill, Jason Kidd. Thank God that didn't happen. The threats started to pour on as Kobe continued his public displeasure and continued to state his desire to be traded. The public also had mixed opinions on Bryant, whether you loved him or hated him at the time, every fan had an opinion on what would be the best for the Lakers. Everyone had a plan for the future and everyone thought a big change was needed. Opportunity arose in the 2007 off season for the Lake show to bring in none other than Kevin Garnett. Finally, this was the answer. A big man, a big name, a "Big Ticket." Talks went on for weeks between Mitch Kupchak and the Evil Celtic, Kevin McHale, T-Wolves GM. All deals had Andrew Bynum somehow involved and Mitch would not deal the young Laker's Center.
The public was torn, and why? The team could not win now without a big name like Kevin Garnett, it just wasn't possible, according to us. The fictitious deadline for this deal had to be the draft, we had to trade pick, we had to trade players and bring in Garnett ASAP. it never happened. The draft started with the obvious picks going one-two, Greg Oden to the Blazers and Kevin Durant to the Sonics. The Celtics were on the board at 5 and they threw quite the curveball. After not being able to dish Paul Pierce, they decided to build around him, now. They traded the #5 pick to the Sonics for their superstar Ray Allen. What? Yes, it was true. This was a solid 1-2 combo that would at least allow them to do just fine in the lackluster east. The draft went on without the Lakers making a move and maintained it's young roster with Kobe Bryant remaining as the teams only true star. Then the unthinkable happened. The two evil Celtic GM's got together and sealed the deal on a trade that would bring Kevin Garnett to the Celtics for a slew of young talent to the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Garnett deal and Kobe's situation did not settle well with Bryant, the fans, the media or anyone who cared about the future of the Laker franchise. The one bright spot of the off season was bringing back the backbone of the 2000-2002 championship Laker teams, Derek Fisher. This was a start, but not enough according to Bryant. The depressing off season carried into the beginning of the 07-08 campaign. Kobe led a young starting lineup that didn't show much promise for the upcoming season. This didn't look great on paper but after a couple months, the Lakers were looking like a playoff team. Andrew Bynum was maturing and becoming and dunking and shot blocking force in the low post and Kobe was being Kobe. D Fish was being the floor general everyone expected he would, being a professional and doing his job. Lamar was up and down as usual and Kwame "DooDoo" Brown had his moment but still couldn't palm a tennis ball and was being Kwame which means he was still dumb as cow shit and very inconsistent. Somehow they were still in the playoff race. Hopes were high in LA, hey, we were gonna at least make the playoffs. Then, the Lakers lost all hope when it's center Andrew Bynum went down with a 2 month injury.
The trade deadline was nearing and Kobe still didn't drop his desire to be traded, then the bomb dropped on the league. There was supposedly a trade in the works that would send then, Memphis Grizzly, Pau Gasol to LA for his little bro, Marc, Kwame "PooPoo" Brown, young PG, Javaris Critterton, who I still think has promise and a couple of first round picks. Couple that with the shipping of Maurice Evans and Brian "Puppy Crap" Cook, it was now apparent that the Lakeshow was serious. Pau was a nice replacement for Bynum, to say the least and Trevor Ariza was a fine defensive anchor for the opposing teams best player. The rollercoaster continued in LA as Boston was in cruise control, dominating the east. They looked like the best team in basketball and there was no doubt in anyone's mind that they would win the 2008 title. The Lakers thought differently. They started climbing the ranks in the very tough western conference and all was well in Lakerland. The hype of a Lakers-Celtics final started as both teams climbed to first place in their respective divisions.
Sure enough as the season ended both teams finished first and the hype continued. The Lakers plowed through the Nuggets in no time flat while the Boston Celtics struggled with the 8th seed Atlanta Hawks. The series went to 7 and The Celtics finished them off in convincing fashion. On to round 2. The Lakers had to face the best home team in the league, the Utah Jazz. While at times the Lakers looked like they could fall, Kobe stood up, put the team on his shoulders and put away the very tough Jazz team in 7, despite a great serious by young pg, Deron Williams. The Celtics went to seven again and had lots of trouble playing 5 on 1, Lebron was proving he is in fact, the 2nd best player in the league and gave a good fight. The Celtics Big 3 was too much for LJ23 and the Celtics would now have their first real test by facing the 2004 NBA Champion, Detroit Pistons. The Lakers drew the defending champion, San Antonio Spurs. The only two teams who are in the running for the team on the current century would be pitted against one another in what was supposed to be a knock down-drag out afair. The series ended in 5 and the Lakers were proving that they were not only the team of the decade, but the best team of the 2008 season.
The Celtics struggled against a Chauncy-less Piston team but eventually pulled off the win in the series. So now, the table was set. The hype happened. David Stern got his wish, he got the Showdown of the Century. Mainly the showdown of 2 centuries ago, but still, Lakers-Celtics is the best possible series for the league, no matter what the generation. The nostalgia is everywhere. Visions of Bird, McHale, Parrish, Magic, Worthy, Jabbar (Alcindor), West, Chamberlain, Russell, Auerbach and Buss. Showtime was back and so was the rivalry of all rivalries. So this is it. Game one is on tap for this evening and who knows what will happen. The C's are favored by 3 tonight and rightfully so. The Celtics were the best team of the regular season and appear to be pumped for the first Championship in Boston hoops since the 80's. The Lakers have 3 at home following the 2 in Boston. This should be one of the best series in basketball history but I think the Lakers take this bitch in 5. Kobe Bryant is now in debate as the best player of all time and this series win would be another step towards being just that. Phil Jackson could also take the championship ring record from the late Celtic great, Red Auerbach. So many storylines, so much rich history, so much to look forward to, yet I still see the father's of LA celebrating when the Lakers win game 5 on father's day and bring the gold back to the downtown hoops dojo, Staples Center. This championship will be for the current dads and the future dads of BH. The house that Shaq built will forever be known as the house that Kobe called home and built his path to the greatest player of our time.

Beck-Chemtrails Now available

LA bred Beck Hanson has just released his new single off his much anticipated upcoming album. "Chemtrails", Beck's new single is the first of many hits to drop from his new album, that has yet to receive a title but is supposed to be a classic. The album will be produced by Dangermouse who has been on a bit of a hot streak lately. Everything Dangermouse has done recently has been an instant classic. In the last few years, Danger has produced Gnarls Barkley, The Good, The Bad and The Queen, MF Doom and the recent Black Keys, which if you have heard, you know is a classic. This guy is climbing the latter as being known as the best producer in the indie age. This newest effort with Beck has to be good. Beck is one of the best musicians in and out of the studio, he is also consistant, just try to name a bad album. Then to have him pair up with another monster like Dangermouse must be an early sign that this is the front runner for album of the year. Check out the new single "Chemtrails."
The track has sorrow points like Sea Changes and space age force as you would here on Midnight Vultures. It's worth a listen and eventually a purchase and a few plays down the road.

Craziest shirt company from the Westside!

The Crazy Robertson, a clothing brand based out of Beverly Hills was started by a group collective last year and has since continued to make jaw-dropping shirts available at the best stores in LA. The clothing is worn by many celebrities including Paris and Perez Hilton. The long awaited 4th shirt was released last week and it looks amazing. The skate is flashy and the colors really make you feel the essence of the Westside. John Jermien is still a local hero and wears the clothes himself. If you though five, five dollar, five dollar foot long put LA into a frenzy, you ain't seen nothin yet! McDonald's, in attempt to promote those delicious looking southern style fried chicken biscuits, will be giving the sandwich away free with purchase of just a medium size beverage, on May 15. Yea, that's right. What will be the repercutions of such a generous donation of indulgent cuisine. Will this be the day when the sky falls? Will the cows, in fact, come home? Will pigs actually fly? My suggestion is find a pig and fly that swine over to your nearest Micky D's. I have a feeling lines will grow by the hour. Although I'msure there is a post script somewhere that reads: "While Supplies Last"

I haven't had it yet but I will soon, I always try the new menu items at all fast food restaurants just so I can talk shit.

Waldorf come to the Westside

The famed NY hotel, the Waldorf Astoria, is set to invade the Westside. Beverly Hills, the place is my birth will soon have a towering hotel/condo construction on the Wilshire and Santa Monica intersection. The current property, the Beverly Hilton, formerly owned by Merv Griffin, is a Beverly Hills land mark and is where I, like so many other Beverly Hills High School grads, went to prom. I think it will be great to bring new life to that area. For those who are not familiar with that area, it's where Westwood, Beverly Hills and Century City meet. Traffic comes from all directions and to have a new meeting point will boost the energy in an otherwise dead area. The Mercury News broke the story today, the project will cost $750 million. When finished the hotel will have 170 rooms and 100 condos, in addition to new restaurants and shops, let's just hope they keep Trader Vic's, good place.

Brother Reade is known for crushing LA house parties. This Duo featuring Bobby Evans on production and DJ and Mister Jimmy Jams on the mic know how to turn the party out. They recently dropped an underground classic called "RAP MUSIC". Hip-hop has been on a downward slope for some time now but this album is a breath of fresh Air. Chances are if you don't live in North Carolina or SliverLake, CA you haven't heard of these guys yet but you will. They are changing the game with fun party cuts to keep you rocking from now to the end of time. Songs like "About that Rock", "Work Ain't for players", and "Like Duh" are gems. Jams comes with very clever meaningful lyrics that anyone that lives in the city of Angeles can relate to. WESTSIDE... And if you don't live in the city of LA you can image how awesome it would be by listening to BR's music. Bobby Evans is a very very intelligent producer. Instead of using old music as a means of sampling, Bobby uses free to use PSA which don't need any sample clearing. GENIUS!!!

This album is seriously an underground classic and a step in the right direction for LA HIP-Hop. Make it a point to check these guys out this week and i will keep you posted on upcoming shows.

That's right, you heard it here first. June 13, 7:30, Nokia Theatre L.A. Live The LA Times' T.J. Simers will host an evening with Vin Scully and John Wooden in a fundraiser for Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA and Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.

This is the best thing to happen to the city of Angeles in a while. Honestly the only thing that could make this night more special was if Chick Hearn was still alive and spoke too. Vin and Johnny are legends in there own right and are the BEST at what they do, respectively. This will be a night for the ages. Don't Miss this very very special night.

Family Movie Night @ La Cienega Park

I woke up this morning and put the tube on Good Day LA & started off my morning with some good news. Bank of America is doing a Family Night Movie Screening for eight weeks around the Los Angeles Area. On Saturday, May 10, 7:00 pm, Allison Janney will be on hand to kickoff Movie Night at La Cienega Park in Beverly Hills (8400 Gregory Way Beverly Hills, CA 90211). The first film to be screened will be Jerry Seinfeld's "Bee Movie". Not to mention all film screenings are FREE to the public. I've never seen Bee Movie & this sounds like a great opportunity for a cheap date, so I'm there! Grab a blanket and picnic basket and take your boo out for a fun filled evening. Guests will receive free concessions such as popcorn, soda, and other giveaways. Did I mention the films will be screened outside on a huge projection screen, similar to classic drive in films. It's family night you crazy kids, so remember no scamming under those blankies!

100.3, Formerly the Beat, has now become "The Sound." It's damn good. This is the best radio station to hit LA in years. It's rock from all generations, for all generations.

Forgotten Album of the West Coast

One and in comes two to the three and four, then I drop the beat I have in store....The D.O.C., lost but not forgotten in terms of his mark on Hip Hop. This West Coast Legend was the first of Dre's projects while still being involved with N.W.A.. The D.O.C., although hailing from Dallas, later moved to Compton, where he met Dre. His first effort, "No One Can Do It Better," hip hop classic. It mixes late 80's party rap with early, raw, gangster rap lyrics, to form a perfect marriage of pleasure and pain. I thought about it and I don't think there is a better 1-2 punch on a west coast rap album when it comes to first two tracks on an album, "It's Funky Enough" and "Mind Blowin'" are serious business (D-D-Da-doc, Dit-Da-da-Doc). The album continues to bump all the way til the end. It's hard, it's fresh, it's dope, it's everything you want from a west coast album. Deep samples, Funky beats, smooth/gangster lyrics and no need to hit fast forward. It's a shame The D.O.C. got into a serious car crash that damaged his vocal chords. He didn't really rap after the crash but continued to ghost-write on albums such as Dr. Dre's, "The Chronic." Later The D.O.C. came out with an album called "Deuce," that was his third album? I know, it doesn't make sense, but whatever, he's hard.

Brad Penny gave up 10 earned runs, nice! Right when ESPN (the 4 letter network)starts stroking us, hottest team in the league, blah blah blah, we get our collective hearts stomped on. Brewing Goodness on the WestsideFace

This being my first post for WestsideFace and all I wanted to write about something special. Something memorable. Something that makes you feel all warm and tingly inside like the memory of your first road head experience. Or the first time going to New Amserdam Cafe in Vancouver (but thats a whole other post entirely). Or the feeling I will have after the Lakers bring the 2008 NBA Championship home to the WestsideFace. So for my first installment, I am proud to introduce my very own beer: I'm Good Brew

I brewed it right here on the best coast and it dances on your pallet. It is a little flat but that just makes it go down easier, right? Hey, it got me drunk. And I'm pumped about the label (thanks H$ and T Hirsh for putting that little diddy together). But don't get your hopes up kids, I'm Good Brew won't be for sale in the stores anytime soon. I only brewed about 40 bottles. Gotta start small... Next up: Westside Original Ale. It will dominate your favorite beer.

Trent Reznor and Company have released a new album via the internet. Much like Radiohead did with their In Rainbows album; just got to the Nine inch Nails website and click on The Slip (the new album). It will ask you for an e-mail address and which type of format you would like the album. ex MP3, FLAC, M4a, etc. The difference between the Radiohead release and the NIN's release is that NIN's are not asking for money. "Consider it a gift to all the fans that have supported us throughout the years" Reznor says on the site. The album is really good i suggest you take this chance to get some free music.

First thing you need to know about Sasha is he goes by Verno: If you yelled Sasha!!! loud across the room, there is not a chance he would give a look back. He is Verno!! Ever since this bad boy was old enough to pick his nose he has been called Verno, from the Film, "Stand By Me". He says he asked way too many questions and ran with a rebellious little crew. Stirring up a storm and annoying his gang with oblivious sarcasm. Verno grew up in Beverly Hills and stayed in the hard knocked life all the way through High School. This mofo is majoring in Business & minoring in Economics at Cal State Northridge. Verno makes money selling life insurance & his body.

All night I hear his homeboys calling him "Hollywood Vern". I guess he refuses to move out of Hollywood, but hates the scene. Fuck the Hollywood scene, right? or right on Vern! Nobody likes to have fun. I also heard a rumor that a statue of this man was being built up in South Windsor, CT. He claims to be a big hit out there since it's his only chance at true FREEDOM, he yells! We could care less since the statue is not on the West Coast. I promised I would drag that ugly statue across the country on my back if it was ever actually built. With all said and done, Verno might be the best looking cat to never get laid in Hollywood! Go outside JerkFace, you can WALK sluts home!!
