Well the day has arrived, I'm up to preach again. I will be continuing in our Philippians series covering chapter 4 verse 1-5.

1Therefore, my beloved and longed-for brethren, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved. 2 I implore Euodia and I implore Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. 3And I urge you also, true companion, help these women who labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the Book of Life. 4Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! 5Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand.

Right now my working title is "Missional Gentleness" examing both a conflict in verse 2 with our call to demonstrate to all people that we are to be gentle. A word that is translated Patience (Wycliffe), Softness (Tyndale, Cranmer), the patient mind (Geneva Bible), Modesty (Rheims Bible), Forbearance (Revised Version), Moderation (King James Version), Sweet Reasonableness.

Initial thought: How can we actively pursue a missional work of letting our gentleness be known to everyone?

New Site for The Courtyard

We've launched a new site for the courtyard to list dates and events (http://www.thecourtyard.org) The Courtyard is a stylish patio-turned-music-venue that features an artist during the famed La Mesa Classic Car Show each week through the summer. The Courtyard is a great place to hang out in a relaxing environment with friends, meet neighbors, have a bite to eat, and guzzle some Starbucks coffee!

Next Date June 17th...Annie Bessancourt This Thursday the Courtyard will feature local artist Annie Bethancourt from 7-9p. From the artist website: "Annie Bethancourt is a singer/songwriter with an arresting voice, interesting melodies, and a passion for storytelling."

June 10th, The Courtyard begins! Kaleo will open up the courtyard as an outreach to the Thursday night Auto Show public from 7-9pm. We are going to have bands come and play and Starbucks in donating coffee!!! June 10th will kick off with the Kathi Burg Band.

This week was a difficult Mother's day for me, on Friday I found out my mom has cancer. It was strange to go to church as flowers and chocolates were handed to the mom's in honor of them, but realizing the potential that my mom may not be here too much longer. Today we are supposed to find out more information to find out what stage she is in and other details that will have an incredible impact on the rest of my family's life. We appreciate your prayers for Kay.

Membership Class

We finally finished our first membership class. We had about 20-30 people attend the 10-week sessions. This class is designed to provide information about Kaleo and how someone can become involved in the multitude of opportunities that come with being a part of our community. It is also designed to answer some common questions about what it means to be a believer in Christ, and what it means to be a member of Kaleo Church in particular.

Follow-up thought on preaching....as I reflect on these four points I would say while this is done throughout the sermon the center focus should be on Christ. The preachers job is to communicate God's message to us in scripture but point to Christ. As we share God's intended plan instead of MOTIVATING people, as they hear the gospel/good news of Christ week in and week out they should be RESPONDING to the message. The difference moves from a man-centered preacher adding legalism works they've motivated people into toward people seeing what Christ has done and being changed by His work responding in humble obedience.

4 Points to Address in Preaching

Our primary thrust is to preach book-by-book and verse-by-verse through God's Word. This is what we believe is our call to communicate what God has communicated to us in the Holy Scripture to the culture we are now a part of.

1. What does the text say & mean?

2. How do we naturally resist this text?

3. How are we to live as a result?

4. So what? Why does this matter...

Gospel-Centered Community I had the opportunity to preach the other day and did so on what it means to be a community formed around the Gospel. This is important because our culture continues to change dramatically in how people view themselves and interact with one another. The danger as a church is to change to this shift in order to make ourselves more palatable to our culture. Check out the notes and mp3 here: Gospel Community

Celebration
This Sunday was a great day. After the service a woman met with David and accepted Christ. It was incredible to see the journey she went through as two of our congregants knew her and God drew her to Himself. She had so many questions but ultimately came to a place of peace as she put her faith in Christ.

Community
Also we had a lot of new visitors. It was great to see so many new faces. I will be preaching in two weeks and I plan on preaching on Gospel Community. How would our church look if we had never seen a church before and found the Bible? What would we do? It seems so many Americans have a self-focused view of coming to Christ. When we are 'born-again' we become part of a body. I want to reflect on what this looks like, how can we view of faith in relation to the believers around us? How can we live out the gospel together? Here is a review of The Passion of Christ at the church (Mars Hill) that is helping plant us. Mars Hill is also the church that my wife and I attended when we lived in Seattle. Mars Hill was a new church planted in October of 1996. It's amazing to see how much they've grown. When we began attending there was under 100 people and now (IN METRO SEATTLE) there are about 2,000 people attending!

Further, check out the new fancy pants website for the church planting organization we belong to, Acts 29. The Acts 29 Network consists of churches around the world called and committed to the Gospel through church planting. We believe planting local, missional, Christ-centered communities is the primary vehicle that God is using to bring His children unto Himself.

Acts 29's desire is to plant 1,000 churches around the world. God is leading them to many people with this same desire, and raising up leaders and starting works across the globe in places like India, Mexico, Brazil and Haiti. ItÂ’s a journey initiated by God that they humbly find themselves a part of, seeking to serve Christ as they follow God's lead.
