Further, you should not have been allowed to fly again, until there was unequivocal evidence that you had completed a successful course of treatment.<br /><br />Taking all of the above into consideration, I believe there is strong clinical evidence that you developed OCD in 1978 at the time when you felt a compulsion to crash your car. The second and more significant episode of OCD occurred on 29 August 1979, with a similar episode on 30 August 1979, but against a background of slowly increasing phobic anxiety. Your then recent onset of OCD raises significant safety issues. Even assuming a less stringent concern about safety matters at the time, you should have been stood down from flying. Further, you should have not been allowed to return to your aviation career until safety could be guaranteed.<br /><br />It remains my opinion that you developed a significant disability in 1979 which was not adequately addressed by Qantas, particularly in terms of removing you from flying, and in the organising of best available treatment, and carrying out a very careful post treatment assessment to ensure that you were fit to fly and that you would not place passengers and the general public at risk.<br /><br /> <br /><br /><strong>Associate Clinical Professor Jonathan Phillips had this to say.</strong><br />I believe it is fanciful to consider that your accident on 15 November 1973 had any relationship with the obsessive compulsive disorder which became problematic in 1979. He was adamant that the Qantas doctor would not have been my treating doctor and would not believe me. I now have the Qantas doctors letter stating that I was under his care. Although the pilot admitted to Compulsive thoughts of 'Shutting down all engines' CASA thought that it was not a good enough reason not to let him fly. Why are they in charge of your safety? Someone said that it is the backhanders that keep CASA at bay and reluctant to support the truth. Hmmm.<br />See more instances of mental illness at Qantas including the suicide of Qantas second officer Matthew Morgan on a slip over in Los Angeles last year<br /><br />Woman throws baby out of window. Father throws child of bridge. What has this got to do with Qantas? Quite a lot.<br />Qantas psychiatrist John Ellard from The Northside Clinic in Sydney implied that women do not kill their babies and therefore F/O Griffin with a similar mental illness would not carry out his compulsion to shut down all engines on a 747.<br />There is now proof at http://www.qantaspilot.com that women have killed their babies and a father threw his child off a bridge. If Dr. Ellard had been right I am sure they would have said so.<br />No one will put their reputation on the line and agree with his report. It is quite common for those who are phobic about heights to have the fear of voluntarily jumping off the edge of a cliff (When they are standing on one) and many people standing on a railway station have a sudden urge to jump in front of a train as it comes in. First Officer Griffin's obsessional thoughts are in this category and not very far removed from normality. Further, you should not have been allowed to fly again, until there was unequivocal evidence that you had completed a successful course of treatment.<br /><br />Taking all of the above into consideration, I believe there is strong clinical evidence that you developed OCD in 1978 at the time when you felt a compulsion to crash your car. The second and more significant episode of OCD occurred on 29 August 1979, with a similar episode on 30 August 1979, but against a background of slowly increasing phobic anxiety. Your then recent onset of OCD raises significant safety issues. Even assuming a less stringent concern about safety matters at the time, you should have been stood down from flying.
