Saturday Seminars are Back

More and more of our students are taking advantage of fast-tracking their program. Our Saturday Seminars allow you to participate in a compressed presentation of an entire course in one day. Students earn 3 credit hours for participating in the Seminar and successfully completing the post-class project.

Our Graduation for the 2008-2009 year is being hosted by the great congregation of Christ the Redeemer in Ponte Vedra Beach on Saturday June 6, 2009. Visit our website for all of the information.

The ceremony starts at 12 noon with a quick rehearsal and a class picture. It will be followed by commencement at 1 PM with a refreshment reception immediately afterward.

All who received degrees in 2008-2009 are being invited as well as those who are 16 credit hours or less close to finishing their programs.

I’m sure everyone reading this can remember exactly where you were and what you were doing when you first heard or saw the tragic news of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the world trade center in New York. This is the day that changed the world as we know it forever.

As we remember all those who lost their lives in this horrific event and pray for their families left behind I pray we will never forget the evil that perpetrated such an awful deed.

I THINK I HAD RATHER PLANT A FEW TREES

Early in my ministry, and that was awhile ago, I heard an illustration that I have used in many of my sermons and lectures. I have no way of knowing if it was fact or fable as I canʼt even recall from whom I heard the story. It was as follows:

Someone asked an elderly Priest what he would do if he knew he only had one day left to live. The Priest didnʼt even hesitate, but answered with deep conviction, I would plant a tree! Honestly, I canʼt recall what emphasis or point was made or intended by the speaker I heard using the story in his sermon. However, the impression that it had on me was quiet profound as I have never forgotten it and still use it often.

For me, I heard that old Priest saying that he always wanted to be sowing into the future. He wanted to plant something that would outlive him and produce fruit long after he was forgotten. I have used that illustration to challenge people around the world to invest themselves into projects and causes greater than themselves, endeavors that only God could complete.

I have felt for a couple of years that all of my experiences to date have led me to this unique season of my assignment in Christʼs Kingdom. I thought I would be able to plant a tree, i.e., Logos. I would do my best to grow Logos and then turn it over to someone to take it to the next level. And you all know I have tried!! To them all, I sincerely repent, and ask their forgiveness for my lack of faith and poor discernment of Godʼs will. I only had enough faith to plant "a" tree. God had something else in mind.

Instead of planting one tree, God is allowing me to plant a several trees and all under the stewardship of people of which some have been in my life for over thirty years. Over the past year the LGN Presbyters and I have been in prayer and consultation seeking to discern Godʼs direction for the various ministries of Logos. Here is where we are at this present time.

Instead of asking a single person to attempt to give leadership to all the unique entities within LGN, it seemed good to us and the Holy Spirit to begin giving autonomy to the separate ministries. Therefore, Logos Christian College and Graduate Schools has moved to the campus of Christ the Redeemer Church and Redeemer Family of Ministries in Ponte Vedra, FL. Dr. JL Rivera will serve as President and I will become Chancellor for the foreseeable future.

Universidad Cristiana Logos, our Spanish school, will be fully under the direction of Roberto Sanchez and his board. Roberto has been with me for 12 years. Roberto and his team have already put a contract on their own property in the San Marco area here in Jacksonsville, FL.

Logos Educators Network is released to the leadership of Misty Lapinski and her capable board. I will continue to lead the University, publishing and ecclesiastical arms of LGN. While we all remain in the LGN family, the sons and daughters are now released to grow their own. I am praying that over the next few years God will bring those He chooses to husband the remaining "trees." For the time being we continue to function well as we transition and with the wise use of technology none of our students or ministry family will even notice a difference. We have all been together serving you for a long time already. Granted, over the next months and years, some of us will decrease that others may increase, so the Kingdom might be extended.

I want to personally thank all our team here at Logos and especially our Presbyters for their faithful commitment to the Lord first and then to Deborah and me. They have stood with us through the good, the bad and the ugly. God bless you all! You will all be kept up to date as we move forward on this exciting journey.

LOGOS Student Wins Vocal Competition

Aaron Unthank, a current student at LOGOS, was recently named the winner of the 2007 CityJam Vocal Competition. The 2007 CityJam Vocal Competition consisted of 25 contestants from Florida’s Bay Area and as far up the east coast as Charlotte, North Carolina. The two-night event featured a delightful variation of musical genres representing everything from jazz standards to country and pop to inspirational sounds.

The Dynamic Power of Prayer

I have been reading Simon Chan’s book entitled Spiritual Theology. It is proving to be one of the most challenging and enriching books I have read in a very long time. In fact I am also reading his book on Liturgical Theology as well. I am on my third read on that one. Now back to Spiritual Theology.

One of the chapters is on "The Theology and Life of Prayer." There is portion I what to share with you and I am sure it will impact you as it has me. I trust you will order the book and receive its full value. Let me know what you think.

“This dynamic of prayer—divine initiative and human response—has been expressed in various ways. Thornton calls it the via media principle, meaning that devotion always grows out of doctrine, feeling out of fact. The most sublime contemplative prayer begins with the simple recognition of the coming of the Word to us. The human race, says von Balthasar, was created to hear the Word, and only in responding to the Word rises to its full dignity. In responding to the Word we discover our true innermost being, namely, our life in the Trinity, without which we are dead even while we live, unable to be fully the persons we are meant to be. We are what we are by virtue of this most intimate of relationships. In the words of von Balthasar, no relationship is closer, more rooted in being itself, than that between the man in grace and the Lord who gives grace, between the head and the body, between the vine and the branches. But this relationship can only have full play …. if the freedom of the Word is answered by a corresponding readiness on the part of man to hear, to follow and to comply. If indeed prayer is human readiness to hear, to follow, to comply so that the utterly basic relationship with God can be more fully realized, it explains why prayer is regarded as the heart of religion, the very sword of the saints and the mother and source of the ascent of the soul to God. In prayer we begin to see ourselves as God sees us and we see God as He is. In prayer we acknowledge that we are not in control. This is simply acknowledging a basic fact of our existence. Not to pray is to take destiny into our own hands, to falsify our true self as dependent creatures and to deny God as the Sovereign One.”

I think God is calling us to PRAYER!!!!

Graduation Time at Logos

This will be a busy week for Logos. We have two of our church-based Bible institutes with scheduled graduations. One here in Jacksonville at Celebration Church, the other in West Palm Beach at Concilio Cristo Mi Redentor (Christ My Redeemer Church). The latter is hosting a graduation for our South Florida, Universidad Cristiana Logos (Logos Christian University) graduates. An exciting time indeed!

We have individual students completing their educations year round. Some choose to have their degrees or diplomas mailed to them without a formal graduation while others participate in graduation ceremonies hosted in churches, banquet halls or hotels. Logos is not a conventional brick and mortar institution as our students are scattered all over the country and for that matter, the world.

Some of our students take classes through distance education. They are assigned to a Mentor/Program Director, their courses are mailed to them and as they complete their work, it is turned in, graded and credit is given. Classes can be taken anytime and students work at their own pace.

Others participate in more structured classes usually hosted by churches. Semesters are scheduled at times that are more convenient for them and the programs often have an internship or practicum that makes up part of the curriculum. Attending classes year round can fast track a student to finish their degrees in far less time than if they attended more conventional venues. It's an extraordinary way to equip people for ministry.

The hearts of those of us who are faculty or administration swell with godly pride every time one of our students earns their degree. THE162/562 Communicating Theology Through Music in Worship

(Theology of Worship)

taught by Benjamin Rivera

Benjamin has over 15 years of experience as the Worship Leader of Cross & Crown, a non-denominational church on the northwest side of Chicago. He is the Artistic Director of the Choir Academy Charter School of Chicago. Benjamin is also in his eighth season as conductor of the Chicago-area chamber choir Cantate, with whom he performs a wide range of mainly a cappella music. He is the bass section leader of the Chicago Symphony Chorus and also performs with the Grant Park Chorus and Chicago a cappella. With these and other groups, he has shared the stage with many of today’s foremost musicians and soloists. He appears regularly as a soloist throughout the Midwest, often in the works of Bach. He holds degrees from North Park and Roosevelt Universities.

Our Partnership with Third Millennium

For some of your coursework, Logos uses curriculum that has been created by the organization, Third Millennium of Orlando, Florida. You can learn all about the organization by going to their website at www.thirdmill.org. You will note their stated goal is to provide a quality seminary education curriculum free for 2^nd and 3^rd world environments. However, let me quickly emphasize that while their goal to deliver this product at no cost to the students the cost to produce this curriculum is enormous.

Therefore, in our partnership with Third Millennium we want to reciprocate by sowing back. Third Millennium has provided Logos with curriculum for our schools in China, Egypt, Africa, Central and South America at no cost. We do pay for the English version of the curriculum at a very affordable rate. When we send you Third Millennium curriculum via DVD and study guides, we purchase first generation DVD’s and incur the cost of producing the study guides, hence the cost ratio we charge for the production. We then donate back to Third Millennium a percentage of each course sent to you. This is one way we all participate in supporting Third Mill.

There is a second option that you have. You can go directly to the Third Millennium website and download the video or audio of the lectures and study guides. You are asked to donate $1.98 per download. For some, the convenience of the download and donation schedule is a good match. For others, they prefer the convenience of letting Logos provide the complete package that gives them full product mobility.

LOOK WHAT GOD IS DOING...…. In November, I posted a picture of our LGN Nigerian offices that are under construction. In that picture, only the walls were up and the adjacent building that will house our classrooms and the clinic was not yet under construction. While still a long way from completion, I was so blessed on my recent trip to Nigeria to see the progress that has been made. However, please note that the roof is only half covered and the rainy season is coming. Therefore, I am again appealing to you for help in completing the roof and getting the windows installed. We only need $7,500.00 to complete this task and have enough to do a major portion of the interior. The completion of this facility is critical to our overall ministry as this site will serve as our central office for all of West Africa. Logos in Liberia

Logos has a presence in Africa. There are Logos students in Liberia as well as a dozen other African nations. Just about anywhere you go in the world, you are not far from the influence of Logos Christian College and Graduate School.

On a recent trip to Africa, Dr. Charles Travis (President of the Logos Global Network of Schools, Churches and Ministers) traveled to Liberia to open our first school and to confer an honorary doctorate on the nations Vice President. A degree from an American university is coveted by national and religious leaders. This award is held in high honor in developing countries and Liberia is no exception.

Logos is training leaders on all levels, all over Africa. Pastors, denominational leaders, and church workers are more effectively expanding the influence of the Kingdom of God as they integrate their learning through Logos into their respective career fields. Many of our students find themselves in the corridors of influence within government, hospitals, prisons, and educational institutions as well as churches.

It's that time again. Time to make significant decisions that can change your life. For some of us it is to lose weight, or start an exercise regimen, or eat more healthily. For others it is to commit to engaging in spiritual disciplines.

I want to address those of you who have been wanting to study the Bible, or grow in your ministry skills. The mystery of the Incarnation, God became man. He emptied himself in order to exist in flesh. He came into the world and the world did not receive him. He is at the same time the center of history and at the margins of society. He came to save us from sin by becoming sin for us.
