Esmin Green was killed on 19th June 2008 in the psychiatric emergency room of Kings County Psychiatric Hospital. She was waiting for a bed after haiving been involuntarily committed.
     She died sfter waiting in the area for approximately 24 hours before collapsing on the floor. It was almost an hour before any hospital personnel gave her any attention. It was captured on the hsopital's video surveliiange cameras.
     According to CNN reports, hospital personnel falsified records stating that "Ms Green was up and went to the bathroom" and was "sitting quietly" even though she had not been moving but was lyig on the floor. The surveillance camera, instead, showed her on the floor, unmoving, while people walked around and past her.
     Perhaps ironic is that Kings County Hospital, on its own website, proudly touts how it has spent $140 million dollars [US] adding to and improving the psychiatric emergency room and building a new multi-storey behavioral health inpatient unit on the campus only this year. Too bad funds weren't similarly dedicated to staff training and face-to-face care.
     New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, when asked of the incident. said: "I think what they said was, 'Oh well people sleep on the floor all the time and I didn't pay any attention.'" Some staff attending the emergency room were fired from their jobs for inattentiveness, but, in fact, they abetted in committing murder by neglect.
     Tonight, prayer vigils will be held in her memory at various places on the globe, including in front of Kings County Hospital in New York City.

In this day and age of herbs fresh picked from the garden to cook with, the pre-packaged spaghetti spice concoction Spatini got taken off the market some time last year, a product I [or my parents] have used in cooking since 1963.
     Since I live some distance from grocery stores, I tend to buy in bulk. As a result, it wasn't until today that I learned the only place I can now pick up a box is on e-bay, an option I don't consider particularly efficient [or desirable] when buying powered spices. Nonetheless, I put a bid on one of the offerings that does not seem out of line compared what I remember paying in the past.
     Spatini's removal from market shelves has prompted an irate response from other users, many of whom report having been faithful adherents to Spatini's unique taste for 30 years or longer. As noted above, I include myself in that crew.
     Spatini's faithful have circulated an online petition asking Lawry's to resume making the spice mix. Others have posed what they think are close approximations of the old Spatini mix recipe [see Glenna Anderson Muse's version, for instance].
     Another anonymous recipe suggestion is as follows:

1 beef bouillon cube (crushed with kitchen mallet) or 1 tsp of bouillon
1 and 1/2 teaspoons 10x sugar
1 teaspoon cornstarch
1/4 teaspoon ground oregano
1/4 teaspoon ground thyme
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
pinch of ground black pepper

(apparently this is the amount that's in one packet)

     Lawry's spices [a subsidiaryof Unilever NV] made their own spaghetti sauce blend, which I have tried but never thought it compared to Spatini. I've also since purchased some McCormick blend but have yet to find out if the finished flavor comes close. And I plan on trying Ms. Muse's concoction in the near future.
     But my guess is that none of them will compare. So I have dutifully signed the petition in the remote hope that Lawry's will re-market the stuff. Thy could sell it in boutique eateries, along with Kraft dinners [something I've actually seen for sale at a very chi chi shop in Montreal].
     [UPDATE 6/30/08] In ten hours I'll know whether or not I got outbid on my effort to get some of this product.

Progress is being made in our transition from a shallow dug well and a new 670 foot [204 m] deep artesian well.
     The well we have been using [that's it on the right] has, for probably over a century, served the household adequately. The walls are blocks of Portland sandstone and it's only 12 foot [3.65 m] in depth; we know it has gone dry in the past, but we can track only a half dozen times since the 1960s. Until last autumn, when itwas dry for four months, it had been dry no longer than a few days. Four of those six dry times have been in the last ten years. We figure a drilled well was due.
     Basically we had no competition for the water in our near-surface aquifer. All our immediate neighbors have had drilled wells for years. But we've also known that we live very close to the bedrock surface. Even one corner of the house, on the cellar level, has a "floor" of ledge. It is that ledge the drillers augured down through to eventually find about four separate veins bearing potable water that can supply us with about 4 gallons per minute.
     So now the ground water we rely upon is much deeper underground and not just the surface water table.

   Aspartame's approval by the US Food and Drug Administration came only after Donald Rumsfeld pushed to have it approved during the Reagan administration. Before coming to power during Reagan Rumsfeld served at CEO to GD Searle Corp, a major pharmaceutical giant which had developed the sugar substitute. Searle Corp was later absorbed by agribusiness giant Monsanto.

   A "debate" between E Fuller Torrey and Thomas Szasz wherein Torrey postures and postulates and hogs the floor spouting undocumented assertions about schizophrenia while avoiding responding to legitimate critiques about his own points of view. Dr. Torrey, you might know, believes that schizophrenia is caused either by being born in winter or by a virus carried by house cats.

   From the New York Times: Influential Harvard psyciatrists Dr. Joseph Biederman, and a colleague, Dr. Timothy E. Wilens accepted millions in "consulting fees" from drug companies while advocating that children be prescribed psychiatric medications. Dr. Biederman is widely regarded as

"...one of the most influential researchers in child psychiatry and is widely admired for focusing the field’s attention on its most troubled young patients. Although many of his studies are small and often financed by drug makers, his work helped to fuel a controversial 40-fold increase from 1994 to 2003 in the diagnosis of pediatric bipolar disorder..."

Biederman and Wilens, who administered federal government research grants at Massachusetts General Hospital, said they did not realize that taking approximately $1.6 million dollars each, in consulting fees [would some refer to this as a bribe?] from drug giant Johnson + Johnson was either a conflict of interest or might be seen as an ethical problem.

Mitch Deighan lost his partner, Mike Anderson on Saturday, May 24th, 2008. They were together for 30 years

Mitch showed me Northern Liberties, a section of Philadelphia no far from Independence Hall, some years back and I marveled at the transformation of an area that I remembered from childhood as an all-but-lost slums. That brick wall was made by Mike and Mitch Deighan. The doorway was patterned after one of the portals on Independence Hall, a few blocks south.
I know that Mike had to have had a lot to say with Mitch for them to have been so committed to being part of the diligent re-colonizers that have revitalized the area over the decades.

Sites I've stumbled across recently

   From We Make Money Not Art an essay by Juan Freire about The use [or lack of use] of public spaces. "The Commons" often referred to places shared by mutual ownership by everyone. Oft-times left unmanaged [and poorly taken care of] capitalists have been quick to advocate the privatization of publicly held lands, selling off to the highest bidder and taking them out of the public domain. Yet such can be the worst thing to happen...
   Street art exhibitions at the Tate Modern as captured on Flickr. Taggers and other graffiti artists get their fifteen minutes of fame and use some eight storey wallscapes for canvas. Neat! [see the image to the left]
   Wood Gas gets promoted at Green Trust and Woodgas.net, which links to a Yahoo discussion group that is nice enough to host the FEMA Wood Gas Manual. This is not high-technology. A person with some basic skills in mechanics, engine maintenance; with a knowledge of welding and puttering around could do this. The use of supplying fuel from wood may certainly help some, but not everyone will be able or interested... and I'm certain the 21st century Yuppies will object to the idea. The subject is fraught with misconceptions, and it just won't seem aesthetically pleasing to some. For the rest of us... have at it, I say.
   Have troubles with friends and family? Imagine getting along with others while living on Mars. Forget about running down to the store for a litre of milk. Out in space, you are really on your own.
   "Abnormal radiation occurances" involving nuclear waste materials in 2007. I can't recall how frequently I schedule accidents myself, but it's nice to know the Nuclear Regulatory Commission keeps track of those that, apparently, had not been planned. My son, Gareth, maintains a site called Y Hate. It's kind of a hobby, but the site also provides him an outlet for showing off his creative sidelines. He has plans in the works to start promoting a whole line of t-shirts, stamps, decals, bumper stickers and... [you'll probably never guess this] custom made lunch bags.

Coming soon, he is awaiting a shipment of bumper stickers but can likely produce t-shirts individually. This summer he and a friend hope to get either the y-hate site or his own web log to evolve to a bona-fide website complete with product and shopping cart to sell his original wares. Watch for it.

In the tiny hamlet of Clarksburg, Massachusetts a Holocaust Remembrance was held. This is put on annually by an eighth grade school teacher, Michael Little, and his 8th grade students. He has received national attention/recognition from this.
My friend and photo mentor Ian Grey took pictures of this year's one-day presentation at Clarksburg school last May 21st. Ian has consented to let me show his photos of this year's exhibit.

The bicycle has a note on it that says "Jews must hand in their bicycles". Provided by Darrel English, who is a collector of memorabilia from the World War II era. One of the visitors to the exhibit, in front of a display about Oskar Schindler. This was one of the displays created by one of Mr. Little's 8th grade students.The Final Solution [above + below] is another eight grader's project on the subject.The Zyklon gas container label was part of MANY artifacts provided by Darrel English of North Adams."Gestapo" is an eighth grade student project making use of artifacts from Darrel English's collection."The Klansman" [also put together by one of the students] was part of a display about current day prejudice, hatred and Nazi support.

     While it is generally accepted that the WWII Holocaust was about Hitler's zeal at committing genocide against the Jews. Such may be. But it is never lost on me that before the Jews were exterminated, it was people who were living in asylums as mentally ill, or with physical disabilities, who were first gassed to death; a prelude, perhaps, to gauging public acceptance to mass extinctions.
     Humanity cannot forget, ever, atrocities such as the Holocaust, as well as more recent genocidal acts, be it the citizens of Cambodia by the Khmer Rouge; or Slobodan Milosevic's actions against Bosnian Muslims; to the genocide in Darfur; even of the almost totally ignored mistreatment, torture and murder by neglect of countless immigrants in American containment camps.
     War crimes should be unacceptable regardless of who the perpetrators may be. Tribunals to hold those so implicated accountable, while at times as jarring as the awareness of the acts themselves, must also continue to be held, whether the venue be in Nuremberg, the Hague, Pretoria, Washington, DC, Bejing or Dubai.

We are in the middle of getting a new well drilled. We hired John Sima from Cheshire. The rig displayed here goes up above the tree tops, and I'm told is one of Sima's smaller rigs.
     Don't yet know how far down we have to go before hooking into an acceptable aquifer but we'll find out. A neighbor a quarter mile north had to go down 320 feet but got a good supply.
     The yard is in chaos but I don't know how that could have been avoided. Our property is on a series of narrow terraces, and abutted with a 200 ft hight cliff on the eastern side. A road cuts through the property with s concrete and stone retaining wall limited access from the east side of the land. There is, quite literally, only one place where the drilling rig can make it on to the property, and even that location required prep work before the drilling could get started.
The well drilling process is messy but as long as we get the desired result, namely a fresh continuous flow of water, I'll be happy.
     When the project is completed, we'll have two working wells; the shallow dug well [that is no deeper than 11 feet] and the drilled well. Both shall be hooked up together but will be able to be run separately. We'll likely use the dug well for yard and garden needs.

"Fill 'er up!

No matter how fast you pump the gas, the price rises faster. At the pump the other day, I waited my turn behind a landscaper, glad not to have to pay his charges. You can see the pump tally when I snapped the picture, but this was still incomplete. For the pump clicks off at $300.00 [us] and he still hadn't filled the tank. In addition, he was filling the tanks for all his mowers, leaf-blowers and such. When it was done and over his petrol bill [diesel for the truck / gas for the mowers] came to $497.00[usd]. So he can say he got away for less than $500!
I imagine I ought to feel relieved that cost for topping off my tank was a mere $91.00[usd].
He asked what I was going to do with the pictures, and I told him I'd post them on my blog. So he turned around and said, "Take a shot! I appreciate the advertising." That's Barton's Landscaping based in Haddam, Connecticut, 860-345-4052.

Comparisons: The price for regular unleaded in Connecticut this morning is ranging between $3.94[usd]/gal and $4.69[usd]./gal. But today I am in Montreal, where the cost per gallon is $5.60[ca-d], or closer to $6.00 [usd].

Just in case you wonder where all that gas money goes, I submit the following:

     FYI: $400 million a year comes out to approximately $27,500[usd] per hour
     However, the majority of that sum consisted of retirement-independent salary, bonuses, stock options, and restricted stock awards from his final year and prior years that, while high, are by no means unprecedented among major American CEOs. Retirement-specific payments in accordance with the standard pension plan provided to all ExxonMobil employees totaled around $100 million, calculated based on his over forty years of service and his salary upon retirement.
     Lee Raymond is the vice chair of American Enterprise Institute's board of trustees.

I’m not certain we can treat him

There are, after all, standards for admission
They have to be met!
           And if we cannot determine his Axis One
           He doesn’t meet the standard.

But we’ll never determine his Axis One
If all he does today during this meeting
is just sit there –
Crying.

EASTERN

When I was a kid
the place where I lived
was a squat cinder block building
           they called “the Cottage”.

Inside there was a rubber room
           with thickly lined walls
           one could slam ones’ self into
           without really doing much harm.
I got to spend a bit of time there
           when I was bad.

This was nothing like the room they used
the next door over
for the really bad kids.

When a really bad kid went into that room
the Counselors would call the rest of us together
in the hallway, outside the room
where we could look through the window in the door.

   I don't want to sound like a Jeremiah ["the broken-hearted prophet" whose heart-rending life, and true prophecies of dire warning went largely unheeded] but humans are on a psychic roller coaster ride right now that lends itself to think this way.
     Nevertheless, there are those who believe that we can do something to stem the drive to self-destruction if we but pay heed to the warming warnings and actually make changes in how we conduct ourselves.
     The changes we need to make include addressing global climate change, pulling ourselves [and our kids] away from the destructive re-patterning of our brain waves [be it tossing out the violent video games or weaning off of harmful neuroleptic drugs], even altering the ways we engage in the collective decision-making process.
     That said, here's some links to go to, ponder what they present, then get off the Barcalounger and get to work!

   350.org. Bill McKibben's site warning of the impact of CO2 gases on Mother Earth. "350 is the red line for human beings, the most important number on the planet. The most recent science tells us that unless we can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million, we will cause huge and irreversible damage to the earth." The current level of CO2 emission is a 385 parts per million and rising.
What is needed most right now are your actions that take the number 350 and drive it home: in art, in music, in political demonstrations [remember folks, voting is only one small part of participatory government], in any other way you can imagine.

   American Hydrogen Association. If for no other reason, this site is worth the visit to check out the growing collection of motorized vehicles [such as the one on the left of this entry] that don't run on gasoline. True, they are not for the technologically challenged, but they offer a start.
     "The mission of AHA is to facilitate achievements of prosperity without pollution and to close the information gap between researchers, industry and the public, drawing on world-wide developments concerning hydrogen, solar, wind, hydro, ocean and biomass resource materials, energy conversion, wealth-addition economics, and the environment.
     "The goal of AHA is to stimulate interest and help establish the renewable hydrogen energy economy by the year 2010 by... working in cooperation with organizations, environmental groups and industry, community, and schools to promote understanding of hydrogen technology, and help create a marketplace for pollution-free hydrogen energy."

   Violent video games and unchecked use of neuroleptic drugs are major contributors to decreasing out ability to think clearly. You won't find out about this in the mainstream media, but it is true.
     I hope society doesn't wait until all those who self identify as "crazy" come out, [since prejudice against people labeled with mental illnesses is more extreme than homophobia] but It is, indeed, crazy people who know full well the deleterious effects of both these market-promoted phenomena.
     You might think otherwise. After all, it seems obvious that glorification of violence through the use of a synapse-stimulating electrical device [video games] would result in altering the brain. Likewise, when introducing massive doses of chemicals into one's body that are intended to alter the chemistry and operation of the brain, would cause some problems. Even as far back as the 1970s it was recognized that forced drugging in the Soviet Union was employed as torture to political dissidents. How is forced drugging of ordinary citizens suspected of being disruptive any different? [rhetorical question here. I don't expect a response unless you want to]

   One the other hand, one thing we have to consider altering is how we look at participation in government. It really isn't enought to say you are too busy after work, or that you need to bond with the children when you get home. People in elected leadership positions need to know that those who elect have interests in decision making outcomes that goes beyond the ballot box.
     For that matter, the decision makers running the global fiefdoms that we call corporations need to hear your perspectives as well. This may be a little more difficult. After all, Boycotts are notoriously difficult to engineer,much less get started. And you have to buy your way into the boardroom by purchasing shares of stock. But all of us must, [as I said above] get out of the lounger and get our point of view heard!
