A review of the top 100 fastest growing ‘start-up’ companies, as published by BRW magazine in August 2009, showed that just 42% of these firms included a targeted search engine optimisation structure on their websites. This might include the use of relevant search terms being used throughout the website, such as targeting relevant keywords in the title tag and description metatags, as well as the focus of page content or website structure to help improve the chances of the website ranking well on Google and other search engines for their product or service.

Nearly all of the 100 companies listed were using a website, either as their primary business tool or as a marketing or information site for their business. However, the majority of these have yet to implement these SEO basics to take advantage of reaching potential new customers who may not know of their business, but are searching the web for their type of business.

Web Marketing Workshop, a search engine marketing consultancy in Sydney, conducted the survey and their Managing Director, Clive Hawkins, commented on the results: “This proportion of business websites that have yet to utilize the opportunities for new business growth through search engines is symptomatic of the lack of awareness or perceived importance about the impact of SEO techniques. They may be using search advertising, such as Google AdWords, but if they have a website, they should also be developing search engine optimisation as a more cost-effective long term marketing strategy.”

Hawkins continued: “Clearly these top 100 fastest growing companies are doing something right in their business sectors, and they should be congratulated on their performance over the previous financial year. However, if nearly 60% of these companies are doing little to create even more opportunities for business through their websites, then it’s surprising since once of the essentials for any website these days is to get search engine optimisation basics sorted out. You can only wonder how much faster these companies might have grown if they had fully utilised the potential for search engine marketing for their businesses!”

There are several things to consider in the quest for the perfect domain name.

Your domain name will need to be different than the other domain names out there. Do a search to get an idea of which domain names are available, and which domains are already taken (most are). Generating a unique domain name won’t be too complicated, since most generic names are already being used by other companies.

In order to allow Internet users to find your website “quickly and easily”, keep the following three tips in mind.

Tip 1: Keep it “short and sweet”.
The shorter the site name, the easier it is for a customer to type and most importantly, remember. This also means, the easier it is for that customer to refer other customers to your site. The internet is all about speed and convenience, so choose your domain name along those same lines. Make the process of referencing, and getting to your website as painless and effortless as possible for your new customer.

Tip 2: Use keywords.
Choose a domain name that is best suited for Search Engines. Search Engines, such as Google, are the number one place to advertise products for your online business. Try to use the main keyword or phrase you’d like to optimize your entire site for. For example, if you specialize in selling jewelry, include the word jewelry in your domain name. Tip 3: Make it relevant.
Make sure your domain name is relevant to what you are selling. This helps when customers search for products or services your site offers. This is where your common sense comes in handy. There is a fine line between proper search engine optimization, and what a search engine will consider to be spam. As we all know, not all search engine optimization methods are ethical. Search engines, such as Google, are making every effort to try to differentiate between ethical internet marketers and those who are simply taking the “easy” way out with spam.

The definition of spam, however, has been something of a debatable topic for many search engine optimization experts. The reason that everybody is working so hard to define it is because when it comes time to search engine optimize, there is a grey area between what spams is, and what is not. What is ethical marketing, and what is not? For a word that is so commonly utilized, spam is a very difficult thing to pinpoint and around which to place boundaries. An internet marketer would not want to inadvertently have their site penalized after all of the time and effort they have put toward making the site as search engine optimized as possible.

Such spam sites can include those that have pages copied directly from other websites that are not of public domain. They might also include pages that are simply lists of keywords, instead of articles that happen to use the keywords among their information. Another kind of spam site is one that appears to either be blank or have text or images on it, but it also has hidden text in the background that has keywords repeated over and over, or simply in lists. This is done by making the text color and the background color the same color so that it is not visible to the reader.

However, some would argue that creating a site, such as one with keywords hidden in the background, is not unethical at all. The reason they argue for its validity is that it does not try to fool the search engine in any way, and it is unobtrusive to the viewer. Computers can see the text in plain sight; it is only the human eye that does not detect it.

However, by doing this, it reduces the chances of sites that are based on legitimate information and key wording techniques. These have been carefully created to include the right words, without taking away from the information and appearance of the site. It means that the sites for which the keywords are truly relevant have a lower chance at achieving proper search engine ranking.

To prevent such efforts, search engines have employed such techniques as penalizing web sites and web pages that include information that has been copied directly from other sites. They also penalize pages and sites that have the same word repeated too many times in its content. There are other rules that are utilized as well, but they differ from search engine to search engine.

- The title should be between 3 and 7 words.
- The target keyword should be at the start of the title.
- Avoid special characters.
- While building Landing Pages use long tail titles which will be able to target 2 or more terms. (There is no benefit to use common keywords in title. Like for, in, the, is, etc)

Content:
- The keywordSrcastic should be the first thing on the page in an H1 tag.
- Try to avoid content duplication as much as possible.
- The keyword should be used at least once in each paragraph.
- The content length (as whole) should be between 600-1000 words.
- Supporting Keywords (e.g. alternative descriptive words, subheading, promotional text or related products) should be in h2 tags.
- ‘H’ tags should be used in hieratical format. (e.g. H1, H2 then H3)
- The page must not contain any dead link
- Keyword should appear at least twice in hyperlink text. (Better to put one link near the start of page)
- ‘Alt’ values of Images must be set to the keywordSrcastic.
- The page should be in complete linking hierarchy (Must be able to get to the page from our main site and vice-versa).
- Every image (apart from design images) should have Alt tag.
- If possible put keyword block in page. Having all target keywords in H tags.

Meta:
- Meta keywords should not be more than 30 words.
- Avoid duplication in Meta keywords.
- Try unique Meta description for each page (if possible).
- Meta description should be short and comprehensive.
- If page is static don’t include Meta Revisit URL
- Use unique Meta keywords in every page.

Social Book marking:
- It is very beneficial to bookmark landing pages (If pages are in less quantity) in Digg or Stumbleupon. It takes 3-4 extra minutes but has great benefits.

- Page name should be short and describe the content of page. (e.g. Keyword should be in page name)

This is a checklist you need to run your site or any clients website through that will possibly identify issues and make it easier to eliminate a few common things before throwing yourselves and your site to the wolves. Use bookmarks and select "open all in tabs" and check a site very quickly for what I have come to find is 90% of the typical issues that hurt or prevent success in the SERP's

1. Run Xenu Link Sleuth - This will identify broken links (external and internal), internal redirects (302's) which will cause penalties if left unattended, resulting 404's and a whole host of related problems; http://home.snafu.de/tilman/xenulink.html

2. Check the IP for bad neighbours here; http://www.domaintools.com/reverse-ip/ or here; http://www.webrankinfo.com/english/tools/class-c-checker.php. You want to find out if you are in a bad neighbourhood, such as one with a spammer or porn neighbour that may draw a penalty. You could be open to potential negative influence if you are even in just a range as these types of sites.

3. Go to Webmaster Tools and canonicalise your domains if you haven't. If you have links to different domains (http and non http), you may be wasting link juice because of the way someone is linking back to you.

4. Check how much code you have v. text on any low ranking page and see if you need to consolidate or move some js off page - http://www.seochat.com/seo-tools/code-to-text-ratio/

5. Check your page size here; http://www.seochat.com/seo-tools/page-size/ You really don't want higher than 90k page size. Otherwise you may time-out the bots and they may miss content or important navigation
