Certain he will be thanked for finding the flaw, he is alarmed when the town refuses to acknowledge or correct the defect. In spite of insurmountable opposition, the doctor refuses to ignore the truth and is terrorized by an oblivious and self-serving majority.

The guitarist Jimmy Robinson is an example of the new, dynamic and fresh outlooks on improvised music that have been a part of New Orleans since the mid '70s. That was when guitarist Robinson first formed the band Woodenhead, one of several highly exploratory combos he has been involved with, including Twangorama.

For two years La Nuit has produced New Orleans' friendliest weekly comedy show. The traditional format of a ComedySportz (CSz) show features two teams of improvisational performers (Actletes), competing in various improv games and performing scenes with audience members judging the results and awarding points. In every show, a CSz referee monitors the action, awarding points and administering fouls as necessary. ComedySportz is clean comedy, great for all ages and groups.

New Orleans' longest-running "Long-Form" improv team, GBD is a squad of veteran improvisers who take only one audience suggestion and create what is essentially a one-act play with recurring characters and themes, but audiences are equally likely to be treated to non-sequitur antics that seemingly come from nowhere. GBD is always pushing the boundaries of what improv can do, but you can count on the result of their experimentation to be hilarious.

Big Sam`s Funky Nation @ Blue Nile

Presiding over his Funky Nation is Big Sam, formerly the trombonist for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, who blows the funk out of his trombone and refuses to let the audience sit still. Between solos and trombone riffs, Big Sam second-lines (a uniquely New Orleans style of street-dance) and gets the crowd going both in movement and in replies to his call-and-response MC-style. A talented group of jazz-trained musicians makes up the Funky Nation, bringing with them the improv-style associated with jazz and the horn-heavy front section that's the hallmark of big band funk. Theirs, and Big Sam's, exuberant dancing and playing, afford them a rare opportunity to let loose. Big Sam's Funky Nation has undeniable personality, as well as masterful chops.

JPAS 31st Season Adult Auditions Announced

Auditions for the Jefferson Performing Arts Society’s 31st Season will be on Saturday, June 21st, from 10am-6pm, Tuesday, June 24th, from 6pm-10pm and Wednesday, June 25th, from 6pm-10pm. All auditions will be held at the Westwego Performing Arts Theatre, 177 Sala Avenue in Westwego. Auditions are by appointment only. Please call 885.2000 ext. 211 to set up a five-minute audition slot. When scheduling your audition, please indicate whether you will be performing song/monologue or monologue only.

Please prepare two contrasting songs and a monologue, OR two contrasting monologues; total not to exceed four minutes. Please provide sheet music in the key you wish to sing it. Accompanist will be provided, but will not transpose. You may be asked to read from sides that will be provided.

All roles are open unless otherwise indicated. All roles are paid. Rehearsal dates are subject to change. Please bring headshot and resume. If you do not have a headshot, please bring a current photo.

Performers of all ethnic and racial backgrounds are strongly encouraged to attend.
Please note that auditions for children for Miracle on 34th Street and The Best Little Christmas Pageant Ever will be held on July 12th by appointment only. Audition material for The Best Little Christmas Pageant will be available for pick-up starting June 18th.

Auditions for THE HISTORY BOYS

Auditions for FourFront Theatre’s upcoming production of The History Boys, by Alan Bennett, will be held on June 8th at 6pm in Tulane University’s McWilliams Hall. Needed are 8 males with a youthful look and a convincing British accent to play the boys, specifically one African American and one of Middle Eastern descent. The adult roles will be cast at a later date. Director Fred Nuccio is asking for a short prepared monologue as well as a reading from either WH Auden, AE Houseman, Thomas Hardy or Stevie Smith. A headshot and resume is requested. Actors will receive a small compensation. The History Boys will run Oct 17 – 26 at Southern Rep. Theater as part of Southern Rep’s City Series. NOMA to Stay Open All Night June 7-June 8

The New Orleans Museum of Art will remain open all night long from Saturday, June 7 to Sunday, June 8, to mark the closing of its current blockbuster exhibition, Rodrigue's Louisiana: Cajuns, Blue Dogs, and Beyond Katrina.

Special events will be ongoing during the 24-hour period beginning Saturday, June 7 at 5 p.m. and continuing through the end of the exhibition's run on Sunday, June 8 at 5 p.m. The lineup of events is highlighted by live music and Cajun dancing with Lafourche (Saturday, 5 p.m.); more music by an artist to be announced (Saturday, 9 p.m.); late-night dance music with DJ Beverly Skillz (Sunday, midnight to 3 a.m.); book signings with the famed Blue Dog artist George Rodrigue (Sunday, 1 and 3 p.m.); a cooking demonstration with Rodrigue's old friend, Chef Paul Prudhomme (Sunday, 2 p.m.); an appearance by another longtime Rodrigue friend, jazz legend Pete Fountain (Sunday afternoon); and live Dixieland jazz from the New Orleans Jazz Club (Sunday, 2 p.m.).

A cash bar will be open during the live music and DJ on Saturday night, and special "Blue Dog" daiquiris will be available all Sunday afternoon.

Other events on tap include complimentary Sunday morning coffee and donuts (Sunday, 9 a.m.-noon); screenings of a Rodrigue documentary in the Stern Auditorium (all day Sunday); appearances by New Orleans Zephyrs mascot Boudreaux, New Orleans Saints mascot Gumbo and the Saintsations, and New Orleans Voodoo mascots Mojo and Bones (Sunday, 1-3 p.m.); free snowballs for kids (Sunday, 1-5 p.m.), and a drawing to win a signed, personalized Rodrigue print.

Rodrigue's Louisiana: Cajuns, Blue Dogs, and Beyond Katrina, as well as NOMA's other current exhibitions and permanent collection works on view, will remain open for a total of 31 consecutive hours, from the time the Museum opens on Saturday, June 7, at 10 a.m., until Sunday, June 8 at 5 p.m.

Louisiana residents receive discounted Museum admission during Rodrigue's Louisiana: Cajuns, Blue Dogs, and Beyond Katrina--$5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and free for children under 18.

Other special exhibitions currently on view include New Orleans: A Sense of Place, organized by the Historic New Orleans Collection, tracing more than 150 years of the city's history from 1850 on; Gentlemen Callers: Paul Cadmus and George Dureau from the Collection of Kenneth Holditch; and Dog Show, a light-hearted look at images of canines from the Museum's permanent collection, also closing June 8.

Chef Brian Landry of Galatoire’s Is King of Louisiana Seafood

Saturday’s premiere of the Louisiana Seafood Cook-Off, presented by the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board (LSPMB), was a seafood lover’s dream. Twelve of the state’s most talented chefs designed culinary delights featuring the main ingredient, Louisiana seafood. After the judges’ scores were tallied, Chef Brian Landry assisted by Chef Heather Young of Galatoire’s in New Orleans and Baton Rouge were the winning team with their Sautéed Cobia with Louisiana Crab Butter. Second place was Chef Phil O’Donnell of O’ Donnell’s Restaurant in Ponchatoula with his Mojo Gulf Shrimp and Panko Crusted Louisiana Crab Cake. Third place was Chef Brian Smith assisted by Chef Eric Mark of Randol’s Restaurant in Lafayette with their Kocho Crusted Louisiana Gulf Grouper.

“I took a very simple approach,” said Landry. “When you get access to great seafood like we do, you don’t have to do much to make it delicious.”

Sautéed Cobia with Louisiana Crab Butter by Chef Brian Landry of Galatoire’s Restaurant

Sautéed Cobia
8 each Cobia, 6-7 oz portions (Also try Lemon Fish or Pompano with this recipe)
2 cups all purpose flour
2 cups clarified butter
Salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste

Season fish with salt and pepper, and dust with flour. Cover the bottom of a large sauté pan with clarified butter and set over medium-high heat. Sauté for four to five minutes per side, until golden brown crust is formed.

Louisiana Crab Butter
5 each Louisiana whole gumbo crabs
2 lb. plugra unsalted butter (European style)
½ tsp paprika
1/8 tsp white pepper or dash of cayenne
½ tsp salt
¼ tsp turmeric

Place gumbo crabs in an 8 qt. (non-reactive) sauce pot. With a food mallet or potato masher, break up shells as well as possible. Add the butter and seasoning to the saucepot and place on a very low flame or burner. Allow shells to barely simmer or stew in the butter for 30-40 minutes. Continue during this cooking time, to crush shells more, to release all crab flavor. Turn off heat; allow crab butter to set for 10 minutes. Strain butter through a very fine chinois or strainer into a stainless bowl. Place stainless bowl with butter over a large bowl filled with ice water. Whisk butter until it starts to solidify and become firm, but not too tight. Place butter into a food processor with an additional 1/3 pound of butter (cut into small pieces.) Blend crab butter with fresh butter together.

Tales of the Cocktail Event Schedule Posted

Legend has it that the first true cocktail, the Sazerac, was mixed in New Orleans in the early 19th century by a pharmacist named Antoine Amadee Peychaud. Over the years, the cocktail has taken on many exotic incarnations, the most imaginative of which were concocted here in New Orleans. Famous drinks such as the Absinthe Frappe, the Ramos Gin Fizz, the Obituary Cocktail, the Hurricane, the Hand Grenade and many others owe their beginnings to the imagination and creativity of New Orleans bartenders.

To commemorate this grand tradition, “Tales of the Cocktail” was conceived in 2003 and has rapidly grown into one of the city’s favorite celebrations.Tales of the Cocktail is always held in July at various locations throughout the French Quarter. Some of the city’s best-known mixologists – along with noted bartenders from around the country – can be counted on to shake, stir and pour their colorful concoctions for thousands of grateful and happy guests.

The occasion also features authors on the subject, “Spirited Dinners,” lectures, demonstrations, and all things “cocktail” (luncheons, parties and cocktail hours). Close to two dozen of the leading restaurants from around the city participate in the various events.
