Hey there all you blog readers... something new and exciting is coming your way! I have just put the finishing touches on my NEW BLOG!!

I've been itching for a new look for a while now and the new blog is sporting some fancy features I've wanted for a while... comments displayed right in the page, an info and contact form right in the blog, plus dropdown categories for easy navigation... and just general fanciness all around :) I've also grown up a bit and dropped the .blogspot address in favor of the classy self-hosted address katyregnier.com/news so please update your bookmarks!

I'd like to give an extra special thanks to Jared at netrivet.com for designing the amazing wordpress theme I'm using, as well as all of his helpful step by step instructions that made the switch over so easy!

For all of you reading this through an rss reader, never fear! Your subscription will be re-routed and you don't even have to do anything! Posts from the new blog should be arriving in your reader just as they always have.

Wow, Emiko and Luke's wedding at Calamigos Ranch was FABULOUS! I love what I do and I love all weddings, but this one was was extra special for so many reasons. First off, Emiko did all of the flowers herself (amazing) and put so many special touches into the details like programs and hand folded origami cranes for every guest (also amazing). They were also just so in love that they were radiating happiness, which really just made my day :)

I try to keep these posts down to a manageable size but I fear I may have let this one get out of control. Oh well... more for you to browse :) We started out the day with Emiko as she started the transformation from beautiful woman to beautiful bride.

How could I not love photographing a wedding where the bride was THIS excited? I just couldn't get enough of her smiles!

The ceremony was so touching, but one of my favorite parts about weddings is looking at the reactions on the families. These are definitely two families who couldn't be happier about this union.

Ah details, what can I say about Emiko & Luke's details except for FABULOUS! They did such an amazing job with so many personal touches. I couldn't just pick one to show you... so I picked nine :)

The first dance as husband and wife, and man these two know how to dance! It was some fancy footwork if I ever saw it!

Awwww love..... so sweet! Now if that last one doesn't make you feel warm and fuzzy inside, I don't know what will! Congratulations Emiko and Luke, I wish you only the best in your future ahead. Super Tuesday

Today is the day that us Californians get our chance to get our voices heard. I don't care who or what you vote for... but please just go VOTE! And if you're a photographer, bring your camera and document it for the New York Times polling place photo project. I'll be voting around lunchtime (and brining my camera) so look for a photo later today. If you're still reading this... what are you doing? Get out and vote!

*edit* So I'm back! No line (I'm hoping it's just because it was early, not because no one is voting!) I was worried that taking photos inside wasn't allowed... so I only took a couple quick snaps of the outside. Yay for polling places that are walking distance from the house!

The Best Kind of Love

Emiko and Luke had an absolutely gorgeous wedding at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu this weekend and I was lucky enough to be invited by Crissy to come along to help capture the day. My full post will have to wait as I have a jam-packed week coming up, but I couldn't resist a little teaser of their wedding :)

They had a beautiful day, a beautiful location, and a heartfelt ceremony, but I have to say that the thing that made this wedding really truly amazing was their love for each other. The kind of love that makes you break out into a cheesy grin. Now that's the stuff that I love to capture! I can't wait to show you all of the images from this amazing day but for now I think this one sums it up. Check out that massive grin... I love it!

Say Hello to Herbert!

If you've been following my blog, you'll know that Ben and I had a rough winter with the loss of our lovable family dog Rita. Our house just hasn't been the same without the jingle of a collar and a friendly face at the door to greet us on our return home.

Which is why I am overjoyed to introduce you to the newest member of our family... a spunky little guy we've decided to call Herbert! We're calling him Herbie for short, and he's quite a handful. He's a fully grown rescue dog (of course) which means he comes with a bundle of issues, but we love him in spite of all of his quirks. He came home with us on Thursday night and has been learning the rules of the house (although he seems quite unhappy with the "no dogs on the couch" rule). I am so happy that we were able to find a lovable dog that needed a good home, and that we finally have that excited jingle when we come through the door (now complete with a full body wag as well). I seem to be totally incapable of stopping myself from taking photos of my pets so expect periodic Herbie posts from now on.... but for the moment here is just one introductory shot of our fabulous new friend!

On a totally unrelated note... I just shot an amazing wedding in Malibu yesterday and I cannot wait to show you some of my favorites. I may be posting a teaser later today, and expect a full post later this week!

Get Ready for Gorgeous!

Well I have to say... picking favorites for this post was one of the toughest things I've had to do in a long time... this shoot was just so much fun, and Valena is just so GORGEOUS that it was impossible to take a bad photo of her. Here are a couple of the best... but the rest are all amazing as well. Enjoy!

One of the things that made this shoot so fun was that she was wearing such a ridiculously cute dress! Valena is not only a super mom, she's also amazingly crafty as well. One of her best talents is that she is a fabulous seamstress... she made not only a beautiful floor length strapless gown for her wedding, but a fun mini version for the reception as well. I love it! I also couldn't get enough of this concrete wall...

Ok ok... only one more on the big concrete wall... just because it's so much fun :) Check out that air... and in heels!

One Hot Momma

This afternoon I had the absolute pleasure of doing a "day after" style wedding shoot with one of my best friends, and the hottest momma that I know! Doing bridal sessions after the wedding is so much fun because we can go crazy and get some amazing shots, without the bride worrying about mussing her dress a bit. I love love love all of the photos, she's just so darned photogenic! I will post more photos later this week... but for now a sneak peak!

Dallas Wedding Weekend

Ok here goes... photos from my weekend in Dallas. There were two main reasons for me to travel to Texas; number one because my cousin Emily was gettin' hitched (yippee!) and number two because my brother is going to be marrying one of my best friends Tara in Dallas this fall as well (double yippee!) and we were going to scout locations and dresses for their wedding. We had a super packed and busy weekend, which was exhausting but SO much fun. I took lots of photos and I'm just warning you now this is going to be a whopper of a post... so sit back, grab a cup of tea and settle it, here we go!

The first thing that we did when we got in was attend the rehearsal. My mom and Tara got to work decorating the pews...

The next day was WEDDING DAY! It was fun to experience a wedding day as a guest instead of as a photographer, but of course you couldn't pry the camera out of my hands if you tried... so I had to grab a couple of shots here and there. The next few are from Emily's bridal brunch.

Between the brunch and the wedding we headed out dress shopping for Tara (I told you it was a packed weekend!!) I am holding myself back from posting any photos of her actually in a wedding dress, as I hear it's bad luck for Chris to see her in one before the big day.

The other thing that made my trip extra-fabulous was that I got to see one of my absolute best friends Jean. Tara, Jean and I were like 3 peas in a pod in college. We were all in the same architecture studio together, all rowed crew together, and basically spent all our time together :) I was so happy that Jean drove up from Houston to hang out with us on Saturday! I just had to throw her in front of the camera though, no one is safe around me :)

And of course I couldn't forget Tara's sister. They are so adorable together!

And now, finally... on to the wedding! There was no photography allowed during the ceremony and I wasn't around for the getting ready... which only leaves the reception. I did my best to stay out of the way of the hired photographer, Sarah Holt from VIM studio (who is awesome by the way!) so I mostly took photos of my family, plus a few dancing shots just for fun :) Here are my parents looking sharp

I think this one is hilarious. I always tease my sister that her mannerisms are slowly turning into those of my mom... and I think this shot proves it!

Just as the night was winding down I glanced over and caught this shot, Emily with her parents in such a sweet moment. She is definitely daddy's (and mommy's) little girl! It was so touching to see the love between them.

So there you have it! My ridiculously long Dallas weekend wrap-up post! I had such an amazing time and I'm so happy for you Eric & Emily!! Congratulations on your marriage and I hope you're having a fantastic time on your honeymoon.
Chris & Tara, you're next! I can't wait for your wedding in Dallas this fall, it's going to be amazing I'm sure. Thank you so much to Jean for driving all the way up to see us, you looked fantastic and I can't wait until you move closer so we can hang out all the time :)

All Fixed!

Well after a hectic afternoon it appears that the email contact form issue has been resolved. I sent a couple of test emails to myself (don't laugh, it was the only way!) and they seem to have gone through so I'm going to trust that it's working again. If you did happen to send me an email and not get a response, please do feel free to resend it. I won't mind, I love email :)

Contact Email Issues!

It has come to my attention that the contact me page on my website is not working properly. I hadn't noticed because my email address IS still working, so if you have been sending me email the old fashioned way (using your email client instead of the contact form) I have received (and most likely responded to) your emails. It is only the emails coming FROM THE WEBSITE that aren't working.

I'm not sure how long this has been going on, and I am SO SORRY for the inconvenience. If you have sent me an email in the last couple of days and you haven't gotten a response, it's probably because I never got the message! I will obviously get this straightened out right away!

In the meantime, if you need to get in touch with me please send all email to info@katyregnier.com and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Ricci & Mike Married!

Well I'm back from my whirlwind trip to Dallas! It was an exhausting weekend, but a ton of fun as well. I have been running around non-stop since I got home, but I've finally taken just a few minutes to pick out a few of my favorites from last week's Parker Hotel wedding.

Ricci and Mike chose to have a small intimate wedding with only family and close friends. The setting was gorgeous and the family was beautiful as well! Since it was such a small wedding they opted to hold off on their reception and went to a quiet family dinner instead. It was such a wonderful way to share their love for each other and their families and I am so honored that I was able to play a part in such a special day. I am still going through my photos searching for favorites, but these are just a few that jumped out at me on the first pass.

Wedding Tease

This is going to be a quick post! I just returned home from a super-quick trip out to Palm Springs where I shot an amazing intimate family wedding at the Parker hotel with Crissy. I am leaving tomorrow for a trip to Dallas and I won't have time to edit and post my favorites from this wedding until I get back... but I couldn't just go a whole weekend without posting any photos. So instead I'm going to leave you with just one...

Long Overdue Holiday Recap

Well the holidays are officially over. It's been a busy couple of weeks so I haven't had much time to update the blog. I was hoping to put up a separate Christmas post before new years but clearly that didn't happen... so now you just have to sit through my Christmas and new years posts all at once. And get comfortable because this is about to be a long one, but trust me... this is the abridged version. You're lucky I didn't post photos from my family white elephant gift exchange :)

My favorite part about going home for the holidays is getting to spend time with friends and family. We typically play a lot of games, mostly apples to apples (which I love) and boggle (which I love even more... I think it may just be the best game ever invented!)

We also have a tradition in my family of always building ginger bread houses at Christmas. Leave it to Ben the architect to build a crazy round house. It was pretty fabulous.

On Christmas morning we open all of our presents in our pajamas like little kids. I will spare Ben the embarrassment of posting photos of him in his pajamas :) but I couldn't help posting this one of my sister. Just look at the excitement on her face! You'd never guess that gift was a pillow. Yes. A pillow. She's easy to please :)

She painted an amazing landscape (from a photo she took in Maui) for her boyfriend for his gift. Isn't it gorgeous? She is a super talented artist.

One of Ben's favorite gifts was his new photo toy. I think now we're going to have ridiculous numbers of photos of each other holding our cameras because every time I went to take a photo of him, he was pointing his camera right back at me. Oh dear.

After opening presents we usually go to visit friends at their house. This year they had a new dog that I'd never met before and Oh My Gosh it was about the cutest thing that I have ever seen. They're lucky I didn't steal her!

Ok so that's the Christmas photos... but now it's time for the new years batch! We headed out to Palm Springs for the weekend with my sister and Mark, John and Valena, and my parents. What better way to spend new years eve in the desert than going to an arcade and playing mini golf?

Allison has a photo-a-day blog which she had been sadly behind on updating due to a broken camera. She got it fixed for Christmas so it was back in action on this trip. Here she is in full photographer mode.

After mini golf we went back to the house and had some time to kill before midnight. So of course in an attempt to entertain ourselves we had to balance things on each others noses.

And play lots and lots of wii. I became addicted to the Rayman Rabbids game. The dancing bunnies are hilarious.

We got all festive with hilarious party hats and noise makers...

And at midnight had copious amounts of confetti.

At the end of the night we were all pretty wiped out. I think maybe those faces were from thinking about how hard it would be to clean up all the confetti :)

All in all it was a wonderful holiday season. If you made it to the bottom of this post, congratulations. New Photos for a New Year

In December I called up my friend Crissy to see if she would be willing to take some new photos of me for my website and blog. She is crazy and fun like me and my one and only request for our session was that my pictures be fun! I have to add here that I am not terribly good in front of the camera if I'm by myself.... I tend to squint up my eyes and laugh nervously. I think she did a great job of making me look less ridiculous than I really do :)
I haven't seen all of the photos yet... and I definitely haven't decided which ones are going on my website yet, but here is a sneak peak (all photos snagged from her blog). Thanks Crissy for a super fun afternoon!

Towards the end of our session we were getting a bit loopy so she made me throw my shoe at her. I was nervous that I was going to whack her in the head (or worse the camera) with my shoe. Hence the face :)

2007 has been a crazy year for me. So much has changed and I feel so blessed to be where I am now and doing what I love to do! I can't wait to see what 2008 has in store for me. I have so many fun and exciting weddings coming up and I am looking forward to getting to know all of my new brides and grooms. To all of you out there, Happy New Year! I hope that your 2008 brings you closer to your dreams. I know it will bring me closer to mine :)

A Very, Very, Sad Day

For those of you who don't consider pets part of the family you might as well stop reading now.

Ben and I had always wanted a dog and when we moved to Los Angeles we finally had the chance. We made sure to rent a place that was large enough, and with a yard, and that allowed pets. We knew we could never buy a dog, I was brought up with rescue dogs (we always had at least two, sometimes as many as four) and they were always the quirkiest and sweetest mutts imaginable.

We adopted Rita in early August of 2006 and she was quite the feisty pup. A rescue dog multiple times over, she was up in years (about 6 or 7 when we got her) so she wasn't a dog that anyone else wanted. But she was sweet and adorable (in an unidentifiable mutt type of a way) and we loved her immediately. From the day we adopted her she became an important part of our family, traveling with us every time we hit the road, and taking up most of our conversations with friends and family.

Last night she had a terrible accident and didn't make it. Ben took her to the emergency vet, but it was too late and there was nothing they could do. We are so so heartbroken. While she wasn't young she had so many years left in her and since it was so sudden and unexpected, it was especially hard to handle. If you're not a pet person this whole thing may seem a little over exaggerated, but if you've ever loved a pet as a part of your family, I hope you'll understand how much pain this has caused us.

At this Christmas time it's just another reminder to me, to love your friends and family fiercely, and to tell them every day how much they mean to you. Savoring every moment is the only way to live life. We will miss our little Rita dearly!

Lighting Fun - More Photos!

Ok well I finally have a spare second to blog! The holiday craziness is definitely catching up to me so I haven't had much in the way of free time lately.

On Sunday Crissy and I brought our gear and husbands out to a park in LA to try out some new off camera lighting techniques. Having spent the morning poring over strobist and trying to memorize some rules of thumb, we pretty much just decided we'd try a bit of everything and see what happened. Trial and error if you will... we definitely learned a lot and we will definitely be heading out again to try out some more fun tricks. Here are a couple of my favorite shots from Sunday.

Marcus and Ben were both supposed to be our ~~guinea pigs~~ models but Ben preferred to be on the other side of the camera helping out with the equipment, so most of the shots we took were of Marcus. Thanks for being such a ham :)

After the sun went down at the park it got absolutely freezing cold, so we decided to move to a new location. We found some abandoned railroad tracks and old buildings... perfect for trying out complete blackness off-camera lighting. (which I must admit is trickier since you have no ambient fill light)

This is one of my favorites!

As we were walking back to the car we noticed a couple of "found light" opportunities, which is what the next two shots are. No flash/strobes here... just a tripod and whatever light was around.

Lighting Fun - Sneak Peak!

This afternoon Crissy and I got together with all of our gear and our wonderful husbands/models and headed out to experiment with some new off camera lighting tricks.
It's WAY past my bedtime and I have to be up early tomorrow so I can't post a lot right now... but I just had to put one shot up because I think it's hilarious. We did learn a lot and get some awesome and actually useful shots, but we had a lot of fun too :)

A Little Something New

Well I am just finishing up editing photos from my last engagement session and I decided to try something a little bit different on one of my images. I'm usually more of a vibrant colors type of person... but this one seemed a little moody and so I decided to try out a more desaturated look. I have been seeing this look in a lot of my favorite photographers' work so I thought it was at least worth a shot :) What do you think? Like it? Love it? Think it stinks?

Your sweater's so ugly...

It's the holiday season and that means it's time for Christmas parties. They can be great, but more often they're terrible and overdone. Most people have heard of the "ugly Christmas sweater" party before.... after all, this article in USA Today was written in 2004 so must have far surpassed the mainstream designation by now. But have you ever been to an ugly Christmas sweater decorating party? I hadn't... until this weekend when Ben and I attended one, and I brought along my camera. Here are a couple of photos...

Everyone brought along an old sweater that had outworn its welcome... or was otherwise retired. There were piles of felt, hot glue, and googly eyes to add to your creation.

Not everyone made a sweater... there was also a hat.

Some people went high class.... substituting the hot-glue method of decorating for actual needle and thread

And some of the designs got quite intricate :)

All of the sweaters were pretty awesome... but here are a few of my favorite designs...

So this year if you're tired of attending the same old bad Christmas sweater party... why not turn it into a Christmas sweater decoration party? It's a ton more fun and only a little more messy :) Happy Holidays!

What did I tell you?

If you saw Bridget & David's portrait session a couple of weeks ago, you might remember me saying that she was in a play. I also said that it was amazing funny and awesome and that you definitely should go see it. Well I'm no expert on theater, but the critics over at the New York Times certainly are and they just came out with their review of "Is He Dead?" , the play that she is starring in.

Here's a little excerpt:

“Is He Dead?,” a previously unproduced play by the long-dead Mark Twain, has at last made its Broadway debut. And for something that’s basically been lying immobile for more than a century, gathering dust in archives, it has a remarkably sprightly step.

...once Mr. Butz puts on a pink dress, this Tony-winning comic actor (“Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”)... shows the true comic genius of which he is made. From that moment the whole production feels as if it’s been pumped through with nitrous oxide. Jokes you would swear you would never laugh at suddenly seem funny.

Oh how I love Paris

Wow... I just realized that in all of the hustle and bustle of getting my recent portrait sessions up on my blog I never had a chance to post photos from our trip to Paris this fall. Paris is hands down my absolute favorite city! I love love love everything about it and I was so happy to get to spend several days there at the end of our Normandy trip this fall.

Here are just a couple of my favorites... oh how I wish I could go back again :)

Paris is so gorgeous at night.

My favorite museum in the city is the Musee d'Orsay. I love the art in the museum but even better is the architecture. It's a fabulous place to stroll around in.

And of course the obligatory stop at the Louvre.

The funny thing we noticed on this trip was how few people actually look at the artwork itself. Most people are either watching it through their cameras... or like these people... reading about it in their book instead of forming their own opinions about it.

Some of the paintings in the Louvre amaze me simply for their enormous scale. These ones are even bigger than life size.

We can't go to Paris without stopping by our old neighborhood. Oh the memories :) This is the street Ben and I lived on back when we we got engaged. It's gone quite upscale since we left.

And since we were in our old neighborhood we HAD to stop by our favorite bakery which makes these delicious mini breads filled with tasty treats like olives or goat cheese. Mmmmm.

If there's one thing Parisians know how to do it's enjoy a park. We spent much of our trip relaxing in the various gardens and enjoying the sunshine. Some of our favorite parks are not the big tourist ones but a bit off the beaten path. This is the parc des buttes-chaumont.

We also happened to stumble across a fantastic exposition going on called photo-quai which (not surprisingly) was installed along the quai near the new Musee Quai Branly (which on a side note is absolutely horrendous.... although I'm the first to admit that I can't stand Jean Nouvel)

On this trip Ben and I formally decided that our suspicions were true and that yes, France is the future. Tiny fuel efficient cars, smart chip credit cards, and now this... digital tags in the grocery stores. Very very futuristic :)

What an amazing trip and even though we just returned I can't wait until I get another chance to go back. Destination wedding anyone?
