When on vacation, in a country like the UK, it is a good idea for a member of your party to carry a small backpack in which you can put things, which might come in handy later in the day.

The morning might be bright, sunny and full of promise, the afternoon might be wet and windy. Cover both bases and pack a small waterproof coat that you can roll-up into a pocket size pouch. You might not be dressed to impress, but you will be warm and dry. I have a Jack in a Pack for such occasions and it always does the job.

On the other hand, if the forecast is for bright sunny weather, pack some suncream (sunscreen). For advice on how to protect you and your loved ones from the sun check out this link to the Livewell section of the NHS website to ensure you stay safe in the sun.

If you or any of your friends suffer from asthma, hay fever or need to take medication, at some point during your day out, make sure you take the appropriate medication or equipment with you.

'An apple a day keeps the doctor away', or so the old saying goes. Taking some fruit out with you can keep hunger at bay. If breakfast is included with your accommodation take some fruit for later in the day. If not, it might be an idea to purchase some fruit and other provisions from a general store or supermarket near your hotel or hostel as it is liable to cost you less than if you're trying to buy something from - or near to - a top tourist attraction.

Similarly, it might be an idea to pack a small bottle of water or two, or some soft drinks. Should you be delayed for any reason you will appreciate having some drinks with you. Luckily, the tap water in the UK is safe to drink. So you can refill your water bottle(s) if needs be.

If you are heading somewhere for the first time, it might be an idea to take a guide of some kind.

If you are going sightseeing in London, Edinburgh, York, Manchester or Chester why not go walk about with a Walk Talk Tour audio downloadable guide? Each audio guide is made up of commentary points (like tracks on an iTunes album) and comes complete with a downloadable map for listeners to print off and easy to follow instruction so you can enjoy seeing the sights on your own terms.
